TO  ALL  PARISHIONERS

The Gayton Group of Parishes February 2014 | 05

In Praise of Volunteers

As many of you will be aware at a service led by the Rt. Revd. Jonathan, Bishop of Lynn,on19 January I was licencedasPriest inChargeof the parishesofGrimston, Congham

and Roydon – in addition to my current role as Priest in Charge of our parishes here intheGaytonGroup.

So many people have said 'but how will you cope?' One very good and true answer tothat is that 'I do not do this job alone!'

Our churches and our communities rely on the goodwill and hard work of an army of volunteers to support and maintain much of what happens in our villages. Indeed it hasbeen said that the health of a community can be judged by the actions of its volunteers. The people who give freely of their time make a difference in the lives of everyone

around them, inmoreways thanwecan count. Our churches, what they are and what they do, should reflect the heart of thecommunities in which they stand, and whilst we celebrate each individual community, itsdistinctiveness and difference, we are a group, a team who work together to benefit thewhole. There is a place in our churches for everyone to belong. A place where we canall find friendship, comfort, love, joy, peace and fun!

Coming tochurch doesnot mean you will begiven a job to do (unlessyou want one!) butI do want to express my sincere gratitude and love to all those of you (and there are far

too many to name) who help and support me– and indeed all of us.Below is an extract from a poem brought to my attention recently by one of our  Churchwardens – it's good, but not exhaustive. I could add many more such as thosewho openupand close our churchesdaily – do the flowers – care for churchyards – windclocks– organise refreshmentsafter services – and so muchmore.

th

Let's praise the man who goes to light The church stove on an icy night.Let's praise that hard-worked he or she,

The Treasurer of the PCC.Let's praise the cleaner of the aisles,The nave, the candlestick, the tiles.Let's praise the organist who triesTo make the choir increase in size,Or if that simply cannot beJust to improve its quality.Let's praise the ringers in the tower Who come to ring in cold and shower.

But most of all let's praise the few Who are seen in their accustomed pew,Throughout the year, whate'er the

weather,That they may worship God together. These, like the fire of glowing coals,Strike warmth into each other's souls.

And though they be but two or threeThey keep the church for you and me.

Ashwicken Primary School Busy December News

The Staff and Children wish a

 Happy New Year

Here at Ashwicken School we have hada really eventful past month.

On December 6th we finally got the

planning permission for our new schoolbuild. This is fantastic news for theschool community and we look forwardto getting started on the project in theSpring.

Our Nativity Play entitledwas a great success at Leziate

Park. We had a packed out audienceeager to see the children act and sing,

which they did extremely well. Our Christmas Fair took place after theperformance and an amazing £500 wasraised from raffles, Christmas stalls, children's crafts and a Santa's Grotto.

Our Junior Carol Concert was held atschool and the children did twoperformances which included a modernrap, a jazz song and more traditionalCarols. The mince pies and cups of teawent down very well afterwards withfamilies and friends.

On Sunday 15th December a team of year 5 and year 6 boys and girls went toCarrow Road! They played a 6 a sidegame on the Norwich City pitch againstLangham Village School and won 5-2!Some of them stayed afterwards towatch the Norwich v Swansea game.

And finally four of our pupils gaineddistinctions in their first ever violinexams. Very well done to Charley Fox,Isabel King, Vaqaar Azad and EvanahLlanderal, Many thanks go also toMathew Lee for teaching them so well.

Incinerator update

The planning decision is still not known.

The Willows incinerator is stillconsidered to be the most expensivealternative to landfill at £105 per tonne.West Norfolk Borough Council's greenalternative is much cheaper costing only£55 per tonne to recycle waste. MaterialWorks has secured £100 million of private funding and Environment Agencycertification for their process, whichtransforms waste into composite buildingmaterials; creating around 200 jobs.Economically and environmentally it isconsidered to be better than burning.

Report of East Winch Parish

Council meeting 6.1.14

The meeting was attended by both TobyCoke, our County Councillor (for the firsttime since his election), and our BoroughCouncillor, Jim Moriarty. It began with atalk about the Child Contact Centre byMr Barker. The Contact Centre is at theDiscovery Centre where, every other

Saturday, parents and children who, usually because of relationshipbreakdown, rarely see each other, canspend the morning together.

The trod was discussed as it hadn't beencompleted and bits of roots were stickingout of it, the promised bollards had notbeen erected, and it had already beenmashed to bits just outside the Village

Hall. Since the meeting Mr Wallace of Highways has assured the clerk that allthese things will be seen to. He has alsosaid that he will inspect Common Road -though at an unspecified date.

Keith Harrod has had a meeting with theBorough Council about maintenance of the play area, and will keep it under

review.

The County Councillor reported that thedecision about the incinerator would beannounced on 13th January, though inthe event the decision has beenpostponed. NCC will have to pay apenalty of £25million if the decision goesagainst them.

The Borough Councillor clarified amisleading report in the Lynn News. He

has not resigned as councillor, only as

leader of the opposition.

The Parish Council voted to keep theprecept as it was last year, that is, at£10,000.

Decisions about charitable donations, future support for churchyardmaintenance and comments on therevised draft village questionnaire weredeferred till the next meeting.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance isdelighted to announce that it is nowoperating a full night-time Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).The HEMS team will cover all sixcounties covered by the East of England

Ambulance Service between the hoursof 5pm to 1am.

This is new ground for the Civil Aviation Authority, the UK aviation regulator, aswell as for the EAAA. To finally getapproval for night-time missions tookalmost a year. It was then necessary for our pilots, paramedics and doctors toreceive extensive training.

The aircraft had to be modified to

accommodate working with night visiongoggles (NVG). Lighting in the cockpitwas changed and additional room wasrequired to accommodate the pilot'sNVG. It was also essential to install amore sophisticated navigation system;as well as a Power line DetectionSystem, a Trakka searchlight for theundercarriage, and put fluorescent

markings on all equipment! And when all these modifications hadbeen approved the actual flight testingbegins! A very long and challengingprocess, but incredibly rewarding if itmeans we can help more people in East

 Anglia.

GAYTON NEWS

Theft of Holly

There are two holly trees in St NicholasChurchyard at Gayton. Just beforeChristmas two men in a white transittype van with ladders on the roof wereseen by at least four people cutting andstealing the holly.

I understand one person spoke to themen who said they had permission fromthe vicar and churchwarden to take theHolly. They didn't! My many years of

experience as a police officer tell methey will always give a plausible, well-rehearsed reason for being there. Asimilar incident occurred at Litchamwhere holly was taken.

Please, if you see anything suspiciouscall the police and please

It'sno good saying to anyone, police or

otherwise, it was a white van!The police would rather be called andattend only to find everything is in order.9 out of 10 times this could happen but, believe me, that 10th time could solve alot of crime.

I know I talk of the old times, as many of you do, when we had a local policeman, but we have to put up with what we

have. We see very little of the police, but please call them and get them toattend.

Gayton Evergreens

January 15th

Next meeting: February 19th at 2-30pm in Gayton Jubilee Hall.

Already now into February the Gayton

Evergreens has a good year'sprogramme ahead for 2014.

2013 was rounded off with the traditionalCarol service, for which they were joinedby Lord and Lady Romney and theRev'd Jane Holmes. The service wasenjoyed by everyone. Readings weregiven about the Holy birth and favouriteCarols were sung, accompanied by Mrs

Florence Newton playing the organ.Club member Mrs Glenda Smead, asoprano, then sang “O Holy Night” toconclude the service.

Refreshments of sherry and mince pieswere served and chocolates werehanded around, getting everyone intothe spirit of Christmas. The afternooncame to a close with the drawing of a

good raffle.

At this last meeting we welcomed MrsSusan Fraser and Mrs Sylvia Savagewho are fundraisers for Tapping HouseHospice. They came to talk to us aboutthe new building of the Hospice. It wasvery interesting to hear about what ishappening and to know that it should be

open for full use by August.Mr Derek Clark and Mr Charles Fosgatewere the winners of £5 each on thefootball tote, and everyone enjoyedafternoon tea and cakes. The raffle wasthen drawn before the close of a verygood meeting.

Kath Roberts - Secretary

Gayton Jubilee Village Hall

As we welcome back our regular hallusers into 2014 there are changes to our weekly programme.

Sadly after many years the GaytonBadgers, the junior section of the StJohn's Ambulance Brigade, has had todisband after many years at the hall. MrsSharon Woodrow and her various

helpers have worked with so many of Gayton’s youngsters for over twentyyears; it is such a shame that now, inthis world of computer games, wifi, iphones and the like, after school thereis less time spent on the interaction of children outside the home, especiallywhen they could be learning a skill whilsthaving fun that would help each of them

to be a more rounded person.

We are sure that everyone who hasbeen fortunate enough to be a Badger will join us in sending good wishes and abig thank you to Sharon. On a Monday evening the Gayton 1stRainbows will now be holding their meetings at Gayton School. The GaytonBrownies will now be at the Gayton

Jubilee Hall; this is all due to numbers,

the Rainbows now being the smaller of the groups and the Brownies needingmore room.

We wish the Rainbows well and hopetheir numbers pick up and say helloBrownies nice to have you!

Every Monday morning with Pat Lowingat 10-11am, or stay for a coffeeafterwards until11.30am, £4.00 inclusive.

Friday evenings at 7.30-9pm £2.50includes a cup of tea.

Learn, Laugh, Love and Be the Best that you can Be!

Gayton Christmas Concert 2013

Many thanks to all those thatsupported the Christmas Concert atthe Church. This was our secondChristmas Concert and certainly thebest attended music concert to date!

Over the past 2 years GaytonPrimary School has been holdingmusical concerts at St Nicholas’Church to celebrate the music thatour children do in school. From thefirst ‘jubilee’ concert it has certainlygrown. The children performed brass, violin, ukulele and percussion. Wealso had some wonderful singing

from our older classes and from thechoir. It was a delightful eveningthat had a mixture of traditionalChristmas Carols and other instrument led offerings!

A highlight was definitely seeing our Year 5 and 6 children performing asa brass band for the very first time!24 of our children played everything

from Trumpets and Cornets toTrombones and French horns!

You may have seen in the LynnNews that our children also took partin a Santa Run in the week beforeChristmas. It was a beautifulmorning and the children ran to raisemoney for the Children’s Hospice.

Jim Keeps GaytonOnTime!

Jim Carter has faithfully climbed thechurch tower at St Nicholas, Gaytonevery week now for over two years tokeep us on time! Do you ever notice theclock on the church tower? Jim

volunteered to take on the clock windingfrom our good friend Mike Chamberlainwho had done the job for many years.Jim knows a fair bit about clocks andhas worked on clocks in factories andmaster clock systems since the 1970s.

Our clock dates back to 1858. Made by aKing's Lynn clock-maker, Thomas Pung, itwas donated to the church by one

Alexander Simson, armiger, who alsodonated the stained glass East window.(an armiger is a person entitled to use acoat of arms e.g., bear Arms). It is a fineexample of an escapement movementand is controlledby a woodenpendulum.

To make sure the clock stay on time Jimhas to regulate its 'bits and bobs' (atechnical term!). This is no mean feat asJim tells me it issensitive tochanges in theweather! A drop in temperature will causeit to gain and if we get a spell of nice warm

weather it loses. Jim said “youneed tobe

a bit of a weather forecaster sometimes.”Well, weall knowhow hard that is!

The clock has to be wound every 7 daysand soyou can prettymuchset yourwatchby Jim (and Toby the dog) as they maketheir way to church every Sunday morning

to carry out the task – left for 7½ days andthe drive weight will hit the floor, and theclock will stop. The weight fully woundstarts from below the bells and runs downthe corner inside the tower all the way tothebottom.

I am sure you will all join with me in sayingthank you to those who have wound our clock in the past – like Mike - and thosewho have volunteered to help in thefuture. David Coston has recently joinedJim as his 'deputy' (Jim tells me David hasserved his apprenticeship and passedwith flying colours). So if ever Jim isunable to wind the clock (before the

weight hits the floor) David hasvolunteered tostand in. Thank you David!

Jim takes a pride in what he does and weare sograteful tohim. Sooften volunteerscarry out important duties, like this, unseen and unrecognized. I want torecognize Jim now and say a big thankyou fromthe churchcouncil and indeedonbehalf of the whole village.

Revd. Jane

Gayton Parish Council News

Meeting held 13th January 2014

The Council noted that leaflets havebeen delivered asking parishioners to

vote on their preferred skatepark/BMXdesign. Votes can be placed either viathe website, www.gaytonnews.co.uk or completing the form and handing it in atWhitehouse Services. It was noted thatthe project may not be able to go aheadif a significant number votes are notreceived.

The Council agreed to purchase its ownVAS (Vehicle Activated Sign) for theparish, providing it is awarded 50%funding through the Parish PartnershipScheme offered by Norfolk CountyCouncil. The sign can be erected at 7different locations in Gayton and GaytonThorpe and will flash the speed of eachvehicle that passes it. The Councilhopes that, along with the speedreduction gates which should beinstalled very soon, the VAS sign willfurther reduce instances of speedingthrough the parish.

The Council considered its budget for 2014/15, noting its decision to purchase

the VAS sign and making a provision for spending on the skatepark project. Itwas noted that the precept had not beenincreased since 2008. The Councilreferenced the Local DevelopmentFramework and that Gayton couldpossibly see approximately another 20homes built in the near future whichwould add to the tax base which

contributes to the Parish Council's

the Council could request £15,865 in2014/15 (the Council's precept has been£15,500 until now) without increasingany parishioner's contribution to it.However, to achieve a significantincrease it was agreed to request aprecept of £16,340.95 which is a 3%

increase.

The Council hopes to hold the AnnualLitter Pick on Sunday 23rd March, beginning at 10am meeting in the car park of The Crown Inn in Gayton. Allvolunteers are welcome!!

The Council noted that the HallManagement Trustees had requestedthat it changes its meeting time from7.30pm to 8.00pm each month in order to accommodate another user of theHall. The Council discussed this and feltthat, although it wishes to continue tosupport the Jubilee Hall, a start time of 8.00pm is too late for both Councillors

and parishioners when considering thelength of time that the meetings can goon for. Therefore, it was agreed to beginusing the school for future meetings, starting at 7.30pm.

There are two vacancies on the ParishCouncil now as Mr Dilwyn Harris and

Mrs Sky Nuttall both resigned at theJanuary meeting. If you are interested in

joining the Council and becoming aParish Councillor, please contact theParish Clerk on 01553 841387 or [email protected]

Gayton WI

By the time you read this, Christmas willbe all wrapped up until next year, and wehope you had an enjoyable time. Themembers of Gayton WI wish everyone avery happy and healthy New Year.

November was a busy month for us,apart from our monthly meeting we helda Cheese and Wine Evening, withentertainment provided by The WestEnd Waiters, from Watton. What alovely evening it was, they were soentertaining with their singing, and thosewho attended had a thoroughlyenjoyable time, something we hope to

repeat if we can. Thank you ladies of Leziate for your mention in the Dec/Janmagazine. Members also attended anevening at Caithness Crystal for some'after hours' shopping with refreshmentsand a raffle, an event always enjoyed byus and other WI members.

Our 2014 calendar has been chosenwith something for everyone, and you

will be made very welcome if you shouldattend one of our meetings held in theJubilee Hall on the first Tuesday of eachmonth at 7.30p.m. We look forward toseeing you.

Kay Shambrook

We were welcomed to our December meeting by President Penny Andrews. We enjoyed a happy mixture of festive

music from the Windmill Hand-bellRingers, delicious food provided bymembers, a Christmas “gift exchange”and all in a beautifully decorated JubileeHall. On the day before, the Group CarolService (hosted by Gayton), had beenattended by about 60 members from all6 of the WIs in the Nar Valley Group

and the collection of £105. sent to the

East Anglia Air Ambulance. We allagreed that the Cheese & Wine Evening

held in November when about 50+members and visitors enjoyedthemselves eating, drinking, laughingand listening to the songs andmonologues of the group The West EndWaiters, had been a resoundingsuccess. Once again our annual

shopping evening at Caithness Crystalwas also enjoyed and our team werecongratulated on attaining a satisfactoryscore when they attended N. Wootton'sannual quiz.

In January we were pleased to welcometwo new members. Many activities for the year were outlined and discussed. These included our entry to the Cator

Cup, an annual Norfolk Federationcompetition which involves Institutessetting up a display containing apainting, a photograph, small provisionsand floral arrangement. The theme thisyear is 'Gardening' and all were asked tocontribute ideas for our entry. Notice of other County Federation events weregiven such as a short holiday to Kent in

April, a workshop on the WI computer system, and the annual photocompetition. Members were also askedto consider ideas for contributing to thelocal community as well as suggestionsfor outings.

After the business, the hall echoed withthe sound of laughter as we enjoyed aBeetle Drive, won by Claire Loane, after

which a cuppa and deliciousrefreshments were much appreciated.

Ladies, why not come and meet us.You'll receive a warm welcome, hear aninteresting talk and learn about the W.I.

Our next meeting will be held on 4thFebruary at 7.30 pm when a speaker from the Air Ambulance will be givinga talk.

The Velveteen Rabbit – A tale for Valentines's Day

“The Skin Horse had lived longer in the nursery than any of the others. He was

so old that his brown coat was bald in patches and showed the seamsunderneath, and most of the hairs in his tail had been pulled out to string beadnecklaces. He was wise, for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toysarrive to boast and swagger, and by and by break their mainsprings and passaway, and he knew that they were only toys, and would never turn into anythingelse. For nursery magic is very strange and wonderful, and only thoseplaythings that are old and wise and experienced like the Skin Horse understandall about it.

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by sidenear the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room.“Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?”

“Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens toyou. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, butREALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you areReal you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

“It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes along time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time youare Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you

get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don'tunderstand.”

"I suppose you are Real?" said the Rabbit. And then he wished he had not saidit, for he thought the Skin Horse might be sensitive. But the Skin Horse onlysmiled.”

From “The Velveteen Rabbit “ by Margery Williams.

An unusual but not unheard of way of breaking into houses isfor thieves to use wire pushedthrough a letter box or window

to hook keys off tables and key racks. Letter boxes are easily secured by fitting withan internal guard which prevents either a device or a small hand being pushedthrough. It is also a good idea to put keys somewhere they cannot be seen.

In Norfolk recently there have been two fatal collisions involving pedestrians. One onthe A148 near Sheringham tragically involving a 15yr old schoolgirl, and the secondof an adult male on the A1075 between Watton and Thetford. Visibility at this time of the year can be poor and road conditions difficult so if you are a pedestrian or cyclistout after dark, or in poor visibility conditions, please make sure you are wearingclothing that is visible. If riding, ensure that your lights are working and brightenough to pierce the gloom; or if you are driving keep your windscreen and lightsclean, your tyres in good condition and stay alert.
