I tug gent ly on the corner of a smal l p iece of paperst ick ing out f rom under the stack pi led up on my desk .Ah , i t ’ s only a page f rom a Word-a-Day ca lendar dest inedfor the bin . Before toss ing i t , I g lance at the word:“F l ibbert ig ibbet / f l ib-ber- tee- j ib-et t / : a s i l ly , nonsensica lperson. ” A rather nice sounding word for a not so nicemeaning. Words fascinate me - sounds and noises coming out ofour mouths to form meaning. As a young chi ld , I wouldask my mother i f our v is i tors had been speaking Dutchor Fr is ian . Every language has i ts own unique soundsand combinat ion of sounds that form words . And to thinkthere are more than 7 ,000 languages spoken in the wor ldtoday. WOW! You may have heard or maybe even used the saying ,“St icks and stones can break my bones , but words cannever hurt me. ” Not t rue . Words can do great harm andcause deep wounds. Just ask anyone who has beenbul l ied , r id iculed , or shamed. A s ingle word can shat terhopes and dreams.

A wel l -chosen word can encourage , bui ld up ,comfort , reduce anxiety and restore peace. Words arepowerful . This week I invi te us to pray a long with the Psa lmist :

“May the words of my mouth and the meditat ion ofmy heart be pleasing in your s ight , O Lord , my Rock and my

Redeemer” (Ps . 19 . 14 ) .
