May I Have a Word with You? BY WILMA V. I tug gently on the corner of a small piece of paper sticking out from under the stack piled up on my desk. Ah, it’s only a page from a Word-a-Day calendar destined for the bin. Before tossing it, I glance at the word: “Flibbertigibbet /flib-ber-tee-jib-ett/: a silly, nonsensical person.” A rather nice sounding word for a not so nice meaning. Words fascinate me - sounds and noises coming out of our mouths to form meaning. As a young child, I would ask my mother if our visitors had been speaking Dutch or Frisian. Every language has its own unique sounds and combination of sounds that form words. And to think there are more than 7,000 languages spoken in the world today. WOW! You may have heard or maybe even used the saying, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Not true. Words can do great harm and cause deep wounds. Just ask anyone who has been bullied, ridiculed, or shamed. A single word can shatter hopes and dreams. Prayers for this week

Long ago , a wise person observed that “p leasant words are ahoneycomb, sweet to the soul and heal ing to the bones” (NIV ,Prov . 16 .24 ) . A wel l -chosen word can encourage , bui ld up ,comfort , reduce anxiety and restore peace. Words arepowerful . This week I invi te us to pray a long with the Psa lmist :

“May the words of my mouth and the meditat ion ofmy heart be pleasing in your s ight , O Lord , my Rock and my

    Redeemer” (Ps . 19 . 14 ) .
