Dear friends,

Over the past 207 years, The Village’s services have changed dramatically, evolvingto meet the changing needs of vulnerable children and families, to take advantageof advances in children’s mental health treatment, and to shift even more emphasisto prevention.

Throughout our history, we have increasingly reached out to children and familiesbefore serious issues arise, helping to strengthen their coping skills and building theirresiliency to face life’s challenges.

Much of this work is done in the schools. We become part of the school and thecommunity it serves. In many ways, we become the hub of the community.

Children in Hartford – where 46 percent of families live below the poverty level –face unique barriers to academic success. Poverty, and the stress that goes along with it,multiplies the likelihood that a child will suffer anxiety, depression, low academicperformance and challenges with parent/child relationships.

But we know that Hartford children – and parents – also come to school with strengthsand skills, hopes and dreams. They come to experience the joy of learning and growing.They are looking for people to encourage and reassure them. For people to believe inthem.

Our work in 12 Hartford schools provides a safety net for families, filling in gaps thatfall beyond the work of the school administration and staff, supporting children andfamilies in their pursuit of success – in school and in life.

Another way we’ve strengthened our support of children is to extend our exceptionalmental health services to family members of the children we serve, as well as others inthe community.

Our ever-evolving array of programs is evidence that change happens. But we will notwaver from our commitment to help keep kids in schools, help students and theirparents be successful.

We are struck by the personal – and sometimes systemic – barriers in their way.Barriers that often seem insurmountable.

At the same time, we are constantly inspired by their courage, their persistence, and theirdrive to do better. We are right there with them.

Lorenza’s connection with the center began nine yearsago with her own English language classes. As a youngmother having just arrived from Mexico, she found thesupport of the center invaluable.

“The center changed the way I raised my children,”she said. “I learned to encourage and nurture my childrento behave and do well in school.” And it’s working. Heroldest, third-grader Heliel, received a student of the monthaward last year.

The Village runs five Family Resource Centers inHartford schools. The focus: building resilience.

The American Psychological Association definesresilience as “the process of adapting well in the face ofadversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources ofstress…‘bouncing back’ from difficult experiences.”

There are many strategies for building resilience inyoung children and their parents. A key one is to build anetwork of strong, caring relationships, both inside andoutside a family unit. This web of support provideschildren and their caregivers with encouragement,reassurance, positive role models, education about child development and parenting, and connections with outside resources.

“What goes on at home or in theneighborhood is often reflected in achild’s behavior in the classroom,” saidGalo Rodriguez, president and CEO ofThe Village. “The Village offers severalprograms that tap into the ready-madecommunity of a school setting to helpbolster a family’s ability to raise healthy,resilient children.”

These programs include the FamilyResource Centers where Lorenza and herchildren received help, on-site outpatient

behavioral health offices, truancy prevention programs and the comprehensive agency – Community Schoolpartnership. We also support students through the JuvenileReview Board, which provides juvenile offenders – whoadmit their guilt – with an alternative to Juvenile Court(see story page 17).

Staff at the Family Resource Centers believe thathealthy development and good education begin withaccess to quality child care and support services from birth.

This “helps us establish a relationshipearly, to start the work of building anextended network of support for theseparents,” said Maribel Bermudez,coordinator of the Family ResourceCenter at Burns.

That support includes developmentalassessments for children, workshops onearly childhood development, and classesthat show parents how to put thatknowledge into action – to support theirchildren’s education. Parents often meet at the center in the mornings, to share

parenting tips while their youngest children play together,building social skills.

Parents can take financial literacy, computer andnutrition classes, and receive help to search for and applyfor jobs. Families can access food pantries at most of thecenters and receive referrals to other resources in thecommunity as needed.

“We treat the families here like they’re members ofour own family, the children are like our own children,”said Maribel. “We laugh together, we cry together. We helpthem to dream and make good choices.”

For Lorenza, she knows the knowledge she gainedhelped her to be a better parent. “I learned that each childis unique and will develop in different ways. I learned howto deal with each stage of development, to deal with eachsituation.”

Teachers and administrators also value the centers.“The behavior of kids in schools where there isn’t asupportive component, like The Village’s Family ResourceCenter, is hard for the teachers to manage – trying tobalance the behavior issues withacademics with supporting parentsis hard,” says Monica Satchell, firstgrade teacher at Wish School.“Without the support, as teachers,

child to be heard and to engage in their education. That’s where the partnership works.”

The understanding that there is a strong link between a child’s academic performance and their mental

and emotional stability is not new.A vast body of research points toevidence that outside stressors in achild’s life can create a host ofproblems in school, includingabsenteeism or dropping out, poorgrades and disruptive behavior. And those stressors are as diverse asthe student body itself, ranging from bullying, poverty and foodinsecurity, neighborhood violence,parental divorce, abuse, neglect and more.

Monica Satchell, a teacher at Wish School, is grateful forthe support and friendship provided by Anaida Delgado,The Village assistant project coordinator at Wish.

Just a few of the dozens of Village staff thatwork directly in the schools

Extending Support Beyond the School DayCommunity Schools take the idea of providing supportservices to parents of school-age children one step further,by extending school hours and opening on weekends andduring the summer to provide a host of programs thatbuild neighborhood and community ties.

“We take an educational building and make it intothe hub of the community,” explained Trisila Tirado,Community School director.

At Community Schools, a lead agency partners withthe school to identify and implement on-site services thatprovide a holistic approach to well-being and developmentfor children, their families and the wider community. TheVillage is the lead agency at Burr Elementary School.

“People are uncomfortable asking for help. If we canfacilitate that process by offering services on-site, it makesmore sense,” said Aldwin. “There are less distractions fromthe community when you can simply walk down the hallto get services. It’s less conspicuous for families – youmight be walking into this room to borrow a pencil fromMs. Vita, or you might be there to sign up for thebackpack program to address food insecurity.”

“The Village is integrated here,” said Fabienne Pierre-Maxwell, principal of Burr. “Our families have somany needs. It’s nice to have someone to help addressthose issues.”

The Hartford Community School model is guided bythe Hartford Partnership for Student Success, whichcomprises Hartford Public Schools, City of Hartford,

Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, each also providing financial support.

In five out of the seven Hartford CommunitySchools, “students who participated in after schoolprograms for three consecutive years increased their rawscores in both reading and math,” according to a 2015evaluation report.

“I view the work that we do as a safety net,” saidTrisila. “You might be hungry, we have food. English maybe your second language, but we have an ESL program.You may not have finished school, but we have a diplomaprogram available. You work full time and need afterschool care – we have that.”

An Even DeeperLevel of Support

Resiliency alone isn’t enough to stave off all effects of thechallenges many families face. Sometimes, a deeper level ofcare is needed and often the school is the best place toprovide that care.

Last year, Adelaida noticed that her six-year-oldgrandson, Raymond, wasn’t developing as he should – hehadn’t learned how to read and was struggling with basicmath skills.

Raymond’s parents were struggling with alcohol andsubstance abuse issues, so Adelaida decided to pursuecustody of her grandson.

The transition was hard for everyone.When Raymond first arrived at his grandparents’

house, “he was very disrespectful and aggressive,” saidAdelaida. “He didn’t listen or follow directions. He hit me and would swear a lot. He took things withoutpermission.”

Raymond started therapy sessions at The Village’sEnhanced Care Clinic while he was still living with hisparents, attending appointments at Village South onWethersfield Avenue in Hartford.

After moving in with his grandparents, he was able tohave his appointments at Milner School in Hartford’snorth end, where Raymond now attends second grade.There’s a clinic office right in the school.

Since the school is only a short distance from wherethey live, Adelaida says this makes everything much easier.She can be more involved in Raymond’s therapy, andspend more time with Luz Tirado, The Village clinicianwho works with the family.

“Adelaida was very concerned with Raymond’sdisrespect,” said Luz. “So I helped her learn different waysto talk to Raymond, to provide more effective instructionand the consequences of his actions.”

Luz also meets individually with Raymond, workingon his social skills, patience and impulse control. Sheprimarily uses a treatment model called ModularApproach to Therapy for Children with Anxiety,Depression, Trauma or Conduct Problems (MATCH).

In 2014, the Department of Children and Familiesbegan an initiative to disseminate MATCH to 18behavioral health clinics by 2018. MATCH combines 33 of the most effective evidence-based practices foroutpatient treatment of children into one system. Itallows for the treatment of several conditions at once,including anxiety, depression, traumatic stress,disobedient, aggressive, and/or disruptive behavior. It isone of several evidence-based practices used by TheVillage, allowing clinicians to tailor treatment to eachfamily’s unique situation and needs.

With the treatment, Raymond has made goodprogress. Adelaida says, “Raymond is much more helpfulat home. He helps to clean and do chores – and even doesthe dishes sometimes!”

Even Raymond is pleased with his progress. He recently attended a field tripto the Big E, a reward for studentswith good attendance. Accordingto Raymond, he got to go“because I went to school everyday and listened to my teacher.”

Raymond still struggles alittle with math and reading, butthat doesn’t stop him from citingmath as his favorite part of school.

Luz says being in the schoolhelps her connect Raymond to

extra support services. “I have a good relationship withthe special education teacher and the school social worker’s office is right next door.Communication here is good, and they are quick to

implement recommendedservices.”

With Luz’s help,Raymond and his grandparentsare building the kind ofresiliency that will help themweather future challenges theymay encounter in life. A web ofsupport has been spun aroundthem, and stems from a placethat is integral to their dailylives – their school.

“It’s during childhood and adolescence where we have a large concentrationof mental-health issues, and school is where many kids are spending a largeportion of their day. That makes school the perfect place to focus mental-health resources. Waiting too long to pay attention to student mental healthcan easily lead to school dropouts or other problems later in life.”

Truancy program helps kids ‘own’their educationBetween 5 and 7.5 million students are chronically absentin the United States each year. That’s as much as 14percent of the student population. For low-income andminority students, the rate is often higher – up to 60percent.

“Addressing the truancy problem isn’t just aboutgetting kids to go to school and fill a seat. It’s aboutimproving their grades, equipping them for their futureand getting them to the finish line – graduation,” saidHector Glynn, The Village vice president of programs.In Connecticut, to reach a 90 percent graduation rate, thestate will need 1,957 more students to graduate from theclass of 2020 – 815 black and 1,484 Hispanic students,according to Grad Nation.

To help meet that goal, The Village runs the TruancyPrevention Project in two Hartford schools: Martin LutherKing Jr. and Alfred E. Burr.

The Truancy Prevention Project is a partnershipbetween The Village, the Center for Children’s Advocacy,the Connecticut Judicial Branch, and Hartford PublicSchools, and is funded by Travelers and United Way ofCentral and Northeastern Connecticut.

“Truancy is a symptom that often masks academicdifficulties, emotional crises, safety concerns, or low selfesteem,” said Martha Stone, executive director of theCenter for Children’s Advocacy.

Getting to the bottom of the truancy issue isparticularly challenging, because each child’s situation is unique. “The biggest barrier to school attendance isoutside influences,” said LaToya Coombs, who runs theprogram at MLK. Those influences are vast and varied.“The students might go home to unstable families ordangerous neighborhoods.”

The program works with students who have a historyof chronic truancy and their families, providing casemanagement services that link students to counseling,mentoring, tutoring and job placement.

Students can also receive legal representation on issuesthat affect their school attendance such as education,special education, access to health and mental healthservices, and public benefits.

“Truancy disrupts the continuity of instruction whenthe teacher takes time to bring that child up to speed,”said Fabienne Pierre-Maxwell, principal of Burr. “Whenyou can address that truancy, it benefits the whole class.”A big component of the program is a positive youthdevelopment class offered to seventh- and eighth-gradersMonday through Thursday.

Literature “shows that middle school students inhigh-poverty neighborhoods are often pressured intoactivities that hinder school attendance such as beingcaregivers for family members or as labor for gangs,”reports the Center for American Progress.

company they’re around,” said LaToya. “I teach them thatjust because you’re from one area or come from poverty, itdoesn’t mean you’re stuck there for your whole life. It’s allabout how you deal with different situations. We talk a lotabout real life issues here – we talk about things they’reconfused about outside of school.”

The program “helps keep us from being late toschool, keeps us from missing school or dropping out,”said eighth-grader Akil. Last year, Akil’s grades sufferedfrom too many absences. He was invited to attend thetruancy class, received help with his schoolwork, and was able to improve his grades.

Now, he has his sights set on his future. “I want to

be an honor roll student in high school. I want to go to college and play basketball.” Akil understands theimportance of his education and is being proactive inbettering his grades and participating in class.

“I try to reinforce the importance of not onlyshowing up, but being active and present,” said LaToya. “I also focus on community engagement. You have a sayand you are able to voice your opinions and concerns and also to be active and do something about it. I let them know they can take ownership of their life.”

Akil gets it. “They tell you why you have to come toschool and why you shouldn’t drop out. They tell you thekeys you need in life to be successful.”

“My name is Rochelle and I go to school at Martin Luther King, Jr. I have a lot offriends and some big tall friends, smallfriends, and I'm very welcomed at school.”

A happy, well-adjusted kid, second-grader Rochelle has a great role model inher mother, Eliah. Given the circumstances,though, things could easily have gone verydifferently for this Hartford family.

Eliah emigrated to the U.S. from St.Lucia at age 15. She was pregnant with herfirst child.

“Being here has been a struggle for me,having a daughter at a young age,” saidEliah, who now has three children, 17-year-old Regine, 12-year-old Rayquanne and 7-year-old Rochelle.

In spite of the struggle, Eliah had big dreams. “It was always my priority to go back to school from since my son was at least two years old. On and off Iwould go to school, then stop because I had to take care of family. I always knew it was something that I wasdetermined to do.”

Then, Eliah learned about The Village’s FamilyResource Center at Rochelle’s school.

“At the resource center I was introduced to theNational External Diploma Program. Right off the bat I was like, okay, this is something probably that can work with my schedule.”

“Initially, she lacked the confidence...she wasn’t sureshe could do the work,” said Selene Roberts, a parenteducator at the center. “As time went by, she became a lot more independent.”

“I came down to the resource center to use thecomputers, which were always accessible to me,” saidEliah. “Mrs. Roberts was there to always motivate me, like, ‘You can do this.’ She was a perfect motivator.”

In June, Eliah graduated from the program andreceived her high school diploma.

Selene is so proud. “Just to see the difference that itwill make in Eliah’s life,” she said. “That it opened up so

many doors for her…the power she has to continue, to goon to be anything, and the support she can give her kids.”

“It was a great feeling,” said Eliah. “Just knowing thatI achieved this, not just for myself but for my children.Knowing I could do something phenomenal. I know Icould do more and I am willing to do more to achieve mygoals and my dreams.”

Eliah wants to pursue a career as an EMT. Firstreceiving her certificate, then moving on to an associate’sdegree and eventually a bachelor’s degree in paramedics.

Clearly, this first step in that journey provides apositive example for her children.

“They’re doing great. The seventeen year old islooking to graduate next year. All she talks about is goingto college. My son goes to the Academy of Aerospace andEngineering. He loves basketball. The little one…shelightens up my day.”

Eliah has dreams for her children, as well…“that theybecome good citizens and that everything that they desireto do or become, that it may be fulfilled. There’s alwaysgoing to be obstacles in the way but, just never give up.Just never give up.”

The children we serve are of all ages and socioeconomicbackgrounds, although many live in poverty. They are atrisk for physical and emotional abuse, or neglect or aremembers of families struggling with many challenges. Ourwraparound approach of services includes individual and

family counseling; group home, residential and outpatienttreatment; school-based support programs; and in-homefamily strengthening. Our goal each day is to do whateverit takes to improve the health, well-being and success ofchildren and families.

Our impact lies in the thousands of children and families who have overcomeenormous challenges and are now building brighter futures for themselves withhelp from the treatment, services and advocacy of The Village.

Prevention, Community Support & Early InterventionProviding at-risk children and families with the help and support they need before problems escalate is a priority for TheVillage. Providing supportive services where children and families already are is often the most impactful. Welcome KIDSAFEAfter months of planning,KIDSAFE CT became anaffiliate of The Village. For the past four years, the twononprofit organizations haveworked together on programsfor families in the GreaterHartford and Tolland counties.They also co-located services at KIDSAFE’s historicheadquarters on Elm Street in Vernon.

“We already had a deep commitment to one anotherthrough three shared ventures,” said Judy Clarke, formerexecutive director of KIDSAFE CT. “We had missionstatements that mirrored one another, we had a strongrespect for one another, and both organizations havedemonstrated longstanding dedication, commitment andpassion for helping families and children succeed.”

“During our discussions, leadership from bothorganizations became increasingly excited about the manybenefits that could come from an affiliation,” said GaloRodriguez, president and CEO of The Village. “Webelieve that working even more closely together, sharingresources, expertise and relationships will greatly benefitour staff, the communities we serve, and most importantly,our clients – in both Greater Hartford and Tolland.”

Two members of KIDSAFE’s Board of Directors –Richard (Jerry) Bundy and Douglas K. Manion – havejoined The Village’s Board to maintain leadershipcontinuity.

KIDSAFE staff are now Village employees. Some areworking alongside their program colleagues – in theCommunity Support for Families and Reunification andTherapeutic Family Time programs, and other staffcontinue to work out of KIDSAFE’s location in Vernon,providing programs including a youth center, programs inthe schools, parenting education, and mentoring.

New and NotableOver the past five years The Village has grown steadily – nearly 20 percent –in the number of clients served through our behavioral health services.

It’s no surprise that a 200-year-old organization would evolve to meet the changing needs of the community,to incorporate developments in treatment methods and to deliver innovative services. This year was no exceptionfor The Village, as we forged affiliations and added an exciting new service.

New Services for Adults Throughout The Village’s history, we have focused ourservices mostly on helping children and families unlocktheir inner strength, grow healthy and stable, and developthe ability to overcome the challenges that life throws atthem. But those families asked us to do even more.

“We often hear from the families that we serve aboutthe need to address the other challenges they face,” saidGalo Rodriguez, The Village president and CEO. “Byadding mental health services for adults, we are buildingon what we already do well to meet these additional needs,helping to strengthen the entire family unit, and improveoutcomes for the children.”

The Village’s new mental health services for adultswill be available to individuals and families affected bysubstance abuse and other mental health issues likeanxiety, depression and symptoms related to past trauma.

Noting Our SuccessesWe are passionate about our work and are proud to highlight a few ofour accomplishments.

Recognition for Leadership Our president and CEO Galo Rodriguez was one of threerecipients of a 2015 Polaris Award from LeadershipGreater Hartford. Each year, the community leadershiporganization honors individuals who “provide a powerfullight and example for others to follow.”

In accepting the award, Galo talked about the workthat The Village does to help families andchildren overcome obstacles and besuccessful. He spoke about his own lifeexperiences and how being the child of asingle, hard-working mother who believed in the power of education, continues toinfluence the work he does today.

“At The Village, we facilitateopportunities and provide resources to thosewho need them,” said Galo. “I personallydon’t know if I would be where I am today if I did not have to face the challenges that I had in my life.”

With a passion to help people in need,Galo received his training and licensure as aDoctor of Medicine and Surgery in his native

Colombia. After coming to the United States nearly 30years ago, Galo earned a master’s in public health from the University of Connecticut. In addition to his role aspresident and CEO at The Village, he serves on theConnecticut Behavioral Health Partnership OversightCouncil, and on the boards of several organizations thatfocus on child and family health issues.

Village Staff Keep Getting BetterSeveral Village staff graduated from two of the City of Hartford’s professional development academies.

Hartford’s Middle Management Institute is a 30-hour certificate program on leadership forsupervisors and middle managers in youthdevelopment programs. Participants meet for a total of 30 hours and must complete a final project. TheVillage’s Jatna Novia-Tapia, Sabina Griffith, AprilGray-Pamphile and Lynda Hunter-Williams eachearned certificates.

In addition, two Village employees – VictorAcevedo and Daryl Phin – also completed the City’sYouth Development Practitioner Academy, a nine-month certificate program that promotes best practicesand professional standards in youth development.

Village staff continue to strengthen their leadership andyouth development skills through professional developmentprograms offered by the City of Hartford.

Glynn Goes to WashingtonHector Glynn, vice president for programs, testified beforethe U.S. Ways and Means Committee to advocate forservices to build strong and stable families and share TheVillage’s belief that prevention is a sound and criticalinvestment. Hector shared information about our Family-Based Recovery program (FBR).

FBR is an intensive, in-home, long-term clinicaltreatment program that provides substance abuse treatment,individual psychotherapy, parent-child guidance andcomprehensive case management.

“We believe FBR has the potential to reduce child abuse and neglect and out-of-home placements of childrenand to build safe and stable homes that can foster the healthy growth and development of children,” said Hector in his testimony.

In Connecticut, parental substance abuse accounts forhalf the foster care placements of children under the age of 3,according to Hector. Connecticut’s Department of Children and Families brought together the Yale Child Student Centerand Johns Hopkins University to develop the FBR program for families with children under the age of 3. One of sixagencies to implement the model, The Village has provided FBR services to 82 families in the past three years

Successful Year for Juvenile Review BoardThe Juvenile Review Board recently celebrated anothersuccessful year, largely due to the many volunteers whoparticipate. Open to Hartford youth ages 7-17, theJuvenile Review Board uses a mediated process to helpdivert first-time misdemeanor juvenile offenders fromJuvenile Court.

Facing a panel of community representatives, eachstudent outlines the situation and how their behaviorharmed the victim and community, acknowledging that

their behavior harmed others, and taking responsibility to repair the harm through direct or indirect action.

The Juvenile Review Board also provides support and assistance – through social services, academic support or counseling – to enable the students to make the necessary changes in their behavior to avoid re-offending in the future.

In 2016, 84 percent of youth in the programsuccessfully avoided Juvenile Court by completing theirrecommendations. And almost all participants – 98

percent – were not arrestedduring the program.

Collaborating with TheVillage to make the JuvenileReview Board effective aremany organizations andindividuals, includingCity officials, communitymembers, law enforcementofficials, probation officers,parents/guardians of theoffenders, and victims ofthe crime.

Partnership with CignaFor decades, The Village has been helping familieswelcome children into their homes through adoption, so we were thrilled when Cigna’s 250 service centeremployees in Bloomfield decided to “adopt” The Villagefor a two-year period ending in December 2016.

During the partnership, Cigna donated $10,000 torenovate our Extended Day Treatment program’s AmazingStars classroom, which serves children ages 5-6. Thecompany also generously sponsored our Girl WithinLuncheon, Foursomes for Fatherhood Golf Classic, and an appreciation dinner for our Volunteer Income TaxAssistance volunteers.

“Our employees’ decision to adopt The Village waswonderful on so many levels,” said Brett Browchuk,Cigna’s senior vice president, service operations. “Not onlywere we able to help The Village meet some of its needs,

but our employees also got to develop personalconnections and see for themselves the wonderful work that takes place at The Village.”

Cigna employees spent time with Liz Bryden, vicepresident for programs, to learn about how The Villagetreats children who have suffered from trauma, helpedorganize and volunteered at our annual field day for thekids in our Extended Day Treatment program andcollected 200 toys for our Holiday Giving Tree.

“By taking time to learn more about The Village’swork and the impact that we have on children andfamilies, Cigna and its employees are in a unique positionto help us spread the word about why our work is soimportant,” said Galo Rodriguez, Village president andCEO. “It’s this kind of engagement with The Village thathelps us make transformative change, not only with thefamilies who need our help, but with the community.”

LEGO funds innovative language skills program for young childrenThe Village received a $155,000 grant from the LEGO Community Fund U.S. to start a program tobuild language skills for young children. The Words Count program is the first of its kind inConnecticut. Developed by The Village, Words Count is based on research that shows that the numberof words a child hears by age 3 can have ameasurable impact on his or her intellectualdevelopment and school readiness.

The Words Count program usesinnovative technology and one-on-onecoaching to give parents new ways to developtheir children’s language abilities. WordsCount will serve children under age 5 fromHartford and the surrounding towns ofBloomfield, West Hartford and Windsor.

“The LEGO Community Fund U.S. isdedicated to supporting programs that benefitchildren up to age four in areas of learning,creativity and problem solving,” said SkipKodak, President of the LEGO CommunityFund U.S. “The Words Count program holdsgreat promise in enhancing the language skillsof children in the Greater Hartfordcommunity.”

First scholarship recipient graduates from University of HartfordIn May, Carolyn Johnson became one of the first Abbott-Carlson Scholarship recipients to graduate college whenshe graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from theUniversity of Hartford. The scholarship program providedCarolyn with financial support and mentoring throughouther college career.

Created in 2012 by actress Linda Carlson, thescholarship program is designed to honor her family’scommitment to education and to benefit the youngwomen who are involved in programs at The Village. “The girls served by The Village are just the girls I want to support because they have overcome many challengesand have the drive and discipline to succeed,” said Linda.

At a luncheon in June, Linda recognized Carolyn forher outstanding academic achievement and announced thefour new 2016-17 scholarship recipients. They are chosenbased on need, high school merit, and a written essay. The four recipients are Ilayah Soto, Sonsearae Sawyer,Erica Rusczyk and Maria Rodriguez.

A luncheon celebrated the 2016-17 scholarship recipientswho benefitted from a scholarship and mentoring programestablished by Linda Carlson.

Girl Within LuncheonWhen Rachel Bailey stepped onto the podium to share herstory at The Village’s annual Girl Within Luncheon, theroom fell silent.

“From a very young age, I was struggling with self-harm, depression and anxiety…I spent much of my earlyhigh school career in and out of hospitals, but I neverseemed to get any better,” Rachel told the rapt audience of 450 women and men.

“The most important thing that the staff at TheVillage did for me was show me that I have, within myself,all the strength I need to be happy and healthy.”

Rachel’s story helped raise $139,000 to supportprograms for at-risk girls and young women in the GreaterHartford area. Today, Rachel is a student at Post University

and plans to become a therapist so she can help otheryoung women in need.

The Village’s 2015 Woman of the Year, Carle Mowell,urged those at the luncheon to join her in “continuing thisquest to lead and to serve, to lift up and to nurture, thewomen and families among us.” Carle was joined byprevious Women of the Year honorees Janet Bailey, LindaCarlson Hart, Sallie Norris and JoAnn Price.

Author Mia Fontaine also shared her life story andspoke about how survivors of trauma can become healthyadults and powerful advocates for children and families. A book, written by Mia and her mom, Come Back: AMother and Daughter’s Journey Through Hell and Back,is a New York Times bestseller.

“If you build it, they will come.” This quote rangtrue for The Village’s new full-size basketballcourt at our main campus.

On our wish list for a long time, it took two specialdonors to make it happen. Gifts from Nancy and JeffreyHoffman of Avon and the Ellis A. Gimbel Trust made thedream a reality. Representatives of the Gimbel family, Johnand Barbara Taussig of Farmington, along with their sonMatthew, and Jeffrey Hoffman joined leadership and stafffor a ribbon-cutting celebrating its completion.

Both families have a long tradition of philanthropy.John Taussig is a direct descendent of the Gimbelsdepartment store family and the great grandson of Ellis A.Gimbel for whom the Trust is named. During its 100-yearhistory, Gimbels was the largest department store in thecountry and is known for creating the GimbelsThanksgiving Day Parade, organized in 1920 by Mr.Gimbel as a parade for the underprivileged children ofPhiladelphia. Much like other parades, what set it apartwas that it also provided breakfast for approximately 1,000 needy children.

“My family has a long tradition of helping children,”said John, “it was started by my great grandfather and tothis day, the Trust that bears his name is committed toproviding entertainment to underserved children.”

Similarly, Jeffrey Hoffman, a Village Corporator andco-chairman of Hoffman Auto Group, has always made ita priority to give back to the community. Well known fortheir generosity and civic involvement, Jeffrey and NancyHoffman are familiar names in Hartford’s philanthropiccommunity.

“Philanthropy is part of our philosophy,” said Jeffrey.“We pride ourselves on community involvement and focuson local charities, with an emphasis on bettering thecommunities in which we work and live.”

When Jeffrey’s grandfather, Israel Hoffman, foundedHoffman Auto Group nearly 100 years ago, he left behinda legacy of trust, community and integrity. Jeffrey is thethird generation co-owner of Hoffman Auto Group, whichregularly supports art, education and medicine.

“A basketball court has been at the top of our children’sand employees’ wish list for years,” said Galo Rodriguez,president and CEO of The Village. “We are so grateful tothese two generous families for making it a reality.”

Daily physical activity is important for the children inour programs for a number of reasons – the obvious healthbenefits of exercise, as well the therapeutic benefits of play,the opportunity to improve social interaction with theirpeers, to build confidence and to reduce stress and anxiety.

Almost 600 children, aged 6-17, use The Village’splayground every year. These are residents of The Village’sSafe Home, Eagle House (sub-acute unit), as well as thechildren in The Village’s Extended Day Treatment after-school program and outpatient services.

“Despite the expertise of our clinicians, there aretimes when we reach a roadblock with traditionaltreatment,” said Liz Bryden, vice president for programs.“Interacting with a child in a different context – throughplay – often yields amazing results.”

In addition to “teaming” up on the basketball court,the Ellis A. Gimbel Trust also provided funding for a newspiral slide to our existing playscape and in 2014 providedfunding for technology upgrades in classrooms used byEagle House students.

We are so grateful to John Taussig and his mother,Mrs. Sally Taussig, who serves as director at the Ellis A.Gimbel Trust, as well as Jeffrey and Nancy Hoffman for the joy their collaboration is bringing to the children we serve.

A CHARITABLE FORCEThe Auxiliaries of Glastonbury, Simsbury and Suffieldcollectively raised $272,100, breaking a record for largestcontribution in Auxiliary history. Proceeds are generated through theAuxiliaries’ completely volunteer-run Second Chance Shops in those towns.The more than 450 Auxilians work hard to support The Village – theycontributed 190,000 hours of their time – a value of nearly $4.5 million!

During their annual Day of Service, volunteers from The Hartford helped beautifyour 1680 Albany Campus by mulching and weeding. Volunteers are essential tohelping us keep our campuses clean and welcoming.

This year, 216 volunteers donated atotal of 7,776 hours and helpedcomplete over 8,000 Federal taxreturns through the VolunteerIncome Tax Assistance program.
