PILGRIMAGE

FPC was wonderfully represented at the recent Georgia Presbyterian

Pilgrimage event in Clayton. Five pilgrims and five staff members spent three

days singing, eating, laughing, and worshiping. The Holy Spirit was evidently

working overtime that weekend! Many of our church family have attended a

Pilgrimage, and they will all attest to the mountain top experience that comes

from being there.

The next pilgrimage weekend is in November, and it will be held in

Cartersville. If you have not attended, it's well worth your time.

he celebration of Pentecost has always been more than a fascinating story at the

beginning of Acts, more than wearing the liturgical color of red on that Sunday, and more

than intrigue about the gushing wind and Galilean Jesus-followers speaking in other

languages. The event has its beginning in the previous chapter, Acts 1, where the apostles

are told by the risen Christ to wait for the Spirit. When they asked about the timing of

Israel’s restoration, the risen Christ’s response was “timing is in God’s hand…what you will

get when you wait is the Holy Spirit; then you will be able to fulfill what I’ve called you to

do.”

Impatiently, the eleven apostles (with Judas missing at this point) sought to fill the vacancy

created by Judas’ betrayal and death. Using a common, first-century method of selection,

the two nominated candidate-replacements were asked to “cast lots” (similar to drawing

straws or rolling dice). Matthias became Judas’ replacement.

The Pentecost event happened a few weeks later (Acts 2). The Holy Spirit began to move through the lives of the

Jesus-followers (some of them apostles, others of them not). Godly people like Stephen were stoned for heresy;

an unlikely eunuch from Ethiopia was enlightened about the Jesus of Nazareth, then baptized before carrying this

spiritual passion back to his homeland. Obviously, he was a major factor in Ethiopia becoming one of the future

strongholds of Christianity. The impulsive, non-Spirit-filled selection of Matthias is never heard of again. The real

story of Christianity’s continued growth and movement picks up with the Spirit’s radical selection of Saul of

Tarsus (the Apostle Paul) to become a new Voice (Acts 9—perhaps the real replacement for a missing apostle).

Being guided by the Spirit is the most important step for any church during a pastor-transition period—or at any

other time, for that matter.

Several weeks ago, I asked for your help in selecting a Transition Team to assist in guiding our interim process.

Thirty-eight (38) individuals were suggested for consideration. In making that moderator appointment, I have

prayerfully tried to balance the group in a number of ways—elders/non-elders, male/female, longtime members/

newer members, younger/older. The following members have agreed to serve us in this short-term capacity. This

in no way excludes them from serving on the PNC or any other elected position: (listed alphabetically) Celeste

Sumner, Debbie Wessely, DeWayne Nix, Dick Frost, Garry George, Hugh Walters, Jim Hiers, Judy Winski, and

Rita Morgan. Pray for them, our future yet-to-be Pastor Nominating Committee, and our future yet-to-be Called

Pastor.

The Wednesday night study group was asked to write a psalm. This one is from Lindalee Walters Oh, mighty, God, oh powerful God Oh God of earth and heaven. Thank you, Lord, for all your love And for all to me you've given. I see your face I hear your voice All nature does your praising. Pale leaves on trees Bright blooms burst forth And birds their songs are raising. A child's smile, a glass of tea A day of bright sunshine. A husband's hug, a Facebook laugh A special time that's mine. You are always near. You hear my prayers Aloud and in my heart. Please keep me close. And show your love. From you I'll not depart.

Jennifer Bagley (our interim pastor’s wife) delivered the sermon entitled ”As a Woman Thinketh”. In

conjunction with this service, the Presbyterian Women’s organization celebrated their Birthday with a wonderful

Sunday brunch after worship. The congregation enjoyed breakfast casseroles, grits, sausage, muffins, sweet

rolls, fruit, and beverages. A PW Birthday Offering was collected at the brunch totaling approximately

$900. This offering was distributed $300 to the choir, $300 to The Growing Place, and $300 went to support

the Presbyterian Women’s national and international missions.

“HERE am i! Send ME”

The theme of the 2018 Presbyterian Women’s Annual Spring Retreat.

Saturday, May 5 was the date for the Annual Spring Retreat at First Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall. It was

well attended, including 10 “first time” participants and two guests of Lindalee’s from the Clarkesville, PCA

Presbyterian Church. Welcomed by PW Moderator, Betty Smith, and led by Facilitator, Betty Sloop, the day was

filled with study and song, delicious food (including Judy’s delectable fresh strawberry pie) and craft time where

we all decorated prayer jars with the assistance of Penny Murdoch and Kim Ciriello.

All agreed that it was a day well spent and that they had been greatly inspired by the fellowship and the word of

God. It reminded us that we need to focus on hearing the Lord to give us the Vision, Insight & Perspective to

respond.

End of Year Picnic

Our final Wednesday night get together ended with an inside picnic to honor

The Growing Place Preschool, Wednesday evening 5/23/18. The Kids First

children decorated the fellowship Hall and happily served as older, wiser

helpers for the evening. Several of the Presbyterian Men grilled our hotdogs

while other church members brought good picnic food. An awesome meal

was enjoyed by the large crowd of church folks, preschoolers and their

families. The preschoolers were introduced, performed a few songs and were

given certificates for being part of the Preschool. Teacher Clair Arvold and

Christy Michele were recognized and given gifts for their hard work. Celeste

Sumner, Becky Clark and Melody Thomason were thanked for being fill-in

teachers and Lindsey McGrath was thanked for her superb office work on

behalf of TGP.

Clair Arvold thanked the church for their support of TGP. She presented PW

President Betty Smith with a Clair - made plaque with the Presbyterian Women insignia on it, to say thanks for

pledging their necklace money to The Growing Place.

A good time was had by all as the 2nd year of TGP comes to an end.

TGP Update

The Growing Place Preschool’s purpose is to offer young children in our community the opportunity for a quality

preschool regardless of their ability to pay.

In this our second year in existence we had 11 students in our program. Our students came from a variety of

places. We had 3 students living in Foster care, one who was referred by CASA living with a grandmother, a

special needs student, two students whose first language was Spanish and 4 other great and interesting

children. TGP is a work in progress. We continue to see how we can improve what we are doing and explore

new ways to find children for our program. We are enrolling students for next fall now, ages 2, 3 and 4 meeting

on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Help spread the word.

Thanks so much to FPC who have been so supportive in every way possible way this past year. We are doing a

good thing!

THANKS CELESTE

Thank you Celeste Sumner for being our food coordinator for Wednes-

day night activities. Celeste put in many hours planning menus, shop-

ping, cooking and cleaning up. She did this all to the Glory of God and

because she loves cooking. We can’t thank you enough!

PRESBYTERIAN MEN

Presbyterian Men will hold their monthly dinner and fellowship on June 12th at 6:00 pm. We invite all our

men to join in this time of good food and good company as we review our activities and plan for more.

Presbyterian Men Enjoy Toccoa Trip Twelve of your Presbyterian Men made the outing to the Curahee Military Museum including our newest

member, Fred Bucher. Lunch at the M&H Country Buffet was a BIG hit and all agreed we will be back. We

even sent Hugh Walters, who had driven separately, on a scouting mission to look at a couple of other

possible outing locations. The military museum was very interesting and our guided tour added to the

experience. Amazing to think of the thousands of paratroopers who were trained in little Toccoa during

WW II and to see the excellent displays that covered all the conflicts in our nation's history. We were also

surprised to find that Toccoa is an AMTRAC station and trains to New York or New Orleans stop at the

station every day. There are a lot of things to see in this corner of Georgia and we will be back.

Mission Team And Education News

An FPC friend recently posted on Facebook about loss and Rainbow Bridge. I

have to confess I didn’t know what that was, so after asking and googling it,

I was so moved by the beauty of this message that I wanted to share it as a

reminder of God’s love.

Rainbow Bridge

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that

pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our

special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food,

water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are

made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals

are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be

left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His

bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green

grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion,

never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and

you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your

heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....”

CREATION STATION VBS

This year’s VBS will be exciting and a little different. We will have

activities based around the Arts, like painting, weaving, dancing, cooking,

sewing, singing, planting to name a few. Creation Station will take place

July 9-13 from 9-12 at FPC.

This is a huge undertaking but

many hands make light

work! We need volunteers to

setup and decorate the weekend

before, help for a short time

during the day with activities and

crafts, and of course we need

our church Mamas (and Daddys) to help shepherd the children! You

don't need to commit to the entire week; even a small amount of your

time will make a big difference! We will have sign up sheets to come

with items you can donate and times to donate. Be watching for more

information and thinking about how you can help.

PW Bestows Honorary Life Membership Status to Betty Royds and Betty Sloop

On Sunday, April 29, 2018, two women at FPC Cleveland

were honored by the congregation and by the

Presbyterian Women’s organization with the awarding of

Honorary Life Memberships in Presbyterian Women.

This membership is symbolized by a pin, which in itself is

very symbolic. The supportive hands represent women

who seek to build an inclusive community; the leaf

represents growth as we nurture our faith; the dove

indicates our work for peace in our lives and throughout

the world, shown in the globe. At the center is the cross

by which our sins are forgiven, and the overall design is a

butterfly, a symbol of the newness in Christ.

Honorary Life Memberships were first issued in 1924. Since that time, hundreds of outstanding

leaders and consecrated women of our Church have received this distinct honor. This is the highest

honor the Presbyterian Women can bestow, and the designation is bestowed only upon those women

who have given sacrificially in service to their Church and faith.

Betty Royds and Betty Sloop were added to the many previous recipients because of their lifetimes of

service and dedication.

Betty Royds is being honored in appreciation for all her many years of service. Betty is presently

serving as a Deacon at FPC, Recording Secretary of PW at our church level, and as the Mountain

Community Leader at the PW Presbytery level. She has served at Moderator of PW as well as other

Coordinating Team offices in the past, and she has been a PW member at our church from the time it

was organized, as well as having been a member at her previous Church in Buford. Her list of service

projects includes Family Promise, Caring and Sharing, and the Food Pantry. She has served on the

Administration Team and many other committees in our Church. One word to describe Betty is

“faithful”. She can always be counted upon to help with meal preparation and other chores when the

PW get together for an event.

A Presbyterian from the cradle, Betty is now a wife to Dave, mother, grandmother, and even a great

grandmother. This honor is bestowed in recognition of her lifetime of service and dedication to her

family, her Church, and to her Lord.

Betty Sloop received this Honorary Life Membership status in appreciation and in recognition for all

her service to FPC and to the community. As the daughter of a Presbyterian minister, and later a

wife of a Presbyterian minister, Betty has been active in the Church all her life. She graduated from

college with a major in Bible, and later obtained a Masters in Early Childhood Education. She has

been a teacher for most of her life, and she says her first teaching experience was in Bible School in

Kentucky on the home mission field when she was twelve years old. She taught classes from

pre-school all the way to classes in colleges and universities. And now she is a very popular Sunday

School teacher at FPC.

In addition to her teaching roles, Betty has served on the Christian Education committee, the

Missions committee, and on the Nominating committee. She is always available to help with Vacation

Bible School, and she has for many years helped organize and has been the Bible study facilitator for

the Annual PW Spring Retreat. Whatever she is asked to do, her attitude has been that she “will try.”

Her results have been outstanding. She enjoys being mother and grandmother to her family, and

she is well-known for her Reese’s cookies! By Lindalee Walters and Judy Winski

Net Operating Income for the month: $ -3,590.63 $ 7,076.12

Note: Two air conditioners that needed repair have been fixed and we have paid for landscaping work that was done by members in the past. There is money in the encumbered designated funds to cover these expenses and we will be moving this money, but it is important to show the expense before the money is moved to cover it.
