• A public-opinion poll showed that 2/3 of Americans favored withdrawing American troops, even if it meant that communism would take over Vietnam.

The Vietnam War Has a Lasting Impact

• More than 58,000 American soldiers gave their lives serving their country in Vietnam; another 300,000 were wounded.

• The end of the war created other problems, it affected American attitudes toward world affairs.

Southeast Asia Suffers Further Turmoil• The US had predicted if North Vietnam won the Vietnamese

civil war, communism would spread to other nations in Southeast Asia. Communist regimes eventually came to power in Laos and Cambodia.

• American foreign-policy strategies misjudged the spread of communism, communist movements in Southeast Asia were nationalistic and intolerant of outside influences.

Veterans Return Home to Mixed Reactions

• The war and the peace divided Americans. Some argued that the US should never have entered the war and that their leaders had lied to them, others countered that the war was part of an ongoing struggle against communism and that in the end, the Us betrayed South Vietnam.

• Few Vietnam vets enjoyed the warmth and worship of victory parades, some veterans suffered from physical and psychological ailments for years when they returned home.

• Vietnam veterans memorial, dedicated in Washington, D.C, in 1982, stands as a powerful witness to the men and women who served and died in Vietnam.

Vietnam Changes American Policies

• The war was costly both financially and in the human toll of shattered lives, it also altered American domestic and foreign policies.

• The war undermined Americans’ trust in their leaders and split the Cold War agreement on foreign affairs.

• Congress passed the War Powers Act, the act limited the President’s war-making powers by requiring him to consult with congress within 48 hours of committing American forces to a foreign conflict.

• The Vietnam war made Americans more suspicious of foreign commitments and less likely to intervene in the affairs of other countries.
