The plan
• Introduce FLEX
• Share the use of digital portfolios within FLEX
• Discuss the FLEX pilot to evidence Good Standing
• Update on re-accreditation of the MMU PSF Scheme and FLEX
You and digital portfolios…
Do you use a digital portfolio for your development?
Do you encourage others to use digital portfolios?
Introduction to FLEX
• practice-based academic CPD for teaching tailored to personal priorities and aspirations
• activities linked to current/past CPD, subject-specific or generic
• pick ‘n’ mix academic CPD activities per academic year
• capture CPD/Reflective commentary in academic portfolio
• recognition for CPD can be combined with academic credits

Sam’s portfolio http://classroombeing.tumblr.com/
“It has been a very valuable process, i'm looking forward to taking forward the actions and trying new ideas in the next academic year.” Becky Clarke
“I really enjoyed this unit (wished I had done it as a 30 really - and have advised all my colleagues to select it!) I was talking with one of the senior members of the team last week about the new things I have been thinking about, as a result of my reflection's on Flex.... reflection it really does work!! All the action points are on my 'to do' list.” Emma Tarpey
“I initially choose flex because none of the taught options are compatible with my teaching or childcare commitments. Due to lack of suitable alternatives I clicked the register button and filled in the required information before actually reading the requirements! When I did read the requirements I must say I was delighted, not only is it extremely flexible as the name suggests but the range of activities that count towards the portfolio are vast, perhaps not quite as far as to say if you can do it and reflect on it then it counts, but certainly there is a sense that the types of activities that one might normally be doing can be included. At first glance it might appear that being able to reflect on ones normal activities means this course is sort of a freebie, but that is not how I view it at all, in fact it is a welcome opportunity to truly reflect on current activities and to ensure the continued improvement across a range of tasks. Moreover, and this is the bit I am particularly excited about FLEX provides an opportunity to engage in a wide variety of extra tasks, things that I want to do, that may improve my teaching and personal development but things that may be hard to justify given the multitude of other constraints on my time. I am so pumped in fact about starting FLEX that even though I have a considerable amount of other things to do with my time I just couldn’t wait to get started with my first portfolio entry, and because FLEX is so flexible, I am typing this whilst my 16 month baby is sitting on my lap watching nursery rhymes on the other screen.” Dr Carly Jim
The FLEX pilot to evidence Good Standing

Remaining in Good Standing for Associate Fellow/Fellows/Senior Fellows/Principal Fellows
Academic Portfolio
piloted
Structure of the Good Standing account 1. What I did? 2. Why I did it? 3. What I learnt? 4. What my future plans for development will be? Case study, critical incident or CPD activities 1000 – 1500 words or equivalent
Potential Benefits Challenges
Creating opportunities for ongoing reflection
Engagement/ Project timescale
Opportunities for professional conversations/ Sharing portfolio with others
Lack of familiarity with technology
Creating a record of CPD Initial feedback from participants: • Time or lack of it • Reluctance to take ownership of CPD, Prioritise
CPD areas and ongoing link to practice enhancement
• Limited sharing • Fear of peer review • Other priorities • Inexperience at reflective practice/writing • Demonstrating development of own practice
creates specific difficulties for Academic Developers
Capturing personal development
Capturing achievements
Provides evidence of both process and product of learning
working towards multiple goals: academic credits, the annual FLEX Award/Good Standing Award
Continued use portfolio to capture further ongoing CPD, achievements, use for Prof. Recognition, career progression
Re-accreditation of the MMU PSF scheme
MMU PSF Use of Digital
Academic Portfolio
FLEX 15 D1
FLEX 30 D2 D1-D4
MMU PSF: Programme Route MMU PSF: Recognition Route
Reflective Commentary Record of Peer observation
Impact evidence Blog/reflective diary
Record of Good Standing / Ongoing Reflective practice record / CPD Record
Plan for the Future
• Gain formal HEA accreditation for:
– FLEX15 D1-AFHEA
– FLEX30 D2 FHEA
– Digital application route within the MMU PSF: Recognition route
• Incorporate Good Standing within the PDR process – encouraging colleagues to use digital portfolio as a tool to encourage reflective practice & also as an ongoing CPD record
Plan for the future
