Leahy, S.J., whoassumed the presidency of Boston College in1996. “We believe that Boston College pro-vides a transforming experience for youngmen and women.”
A continued expression of this philoso-phy, based on the Jesuit principle of curapersonalis, or care for the individual, is thefaculty’s dedication to teaching. Gene DeFilippo and Boston College Athleticscould be the proverbial “perfect fit”.
Since DeFilippo became Director of Athleticson September 16, 1997, he has led the BC ath-letics program to a dizzying and unprecedentedperiod of innovation, growth, fundraising, ath-letics and academic success. DeFilippo hasmade a significant impact on the programinternally, in the Boston communi-ty, and from a national standpointwhile molding it into one of thenation’s elite both on and off theplaying field. This past year, he ledthe program through one of themost significant periods in its his-tory as it transitioned to full mem-bership in the Atlantic CoastConference.
DeFilippo is credited with spear-heading efforts to strengthen BC’sathletics program in a number ofareas, including facilities, fundrais-ing, staffing and academic sup-port. Boston College student-ath-letes’ achievements in the class-room have become an immensesource of pride for the Universityand its supporters. The Office ofLearning Resources for Student-
Athletes recently moved into a brand newhome in the Yawkey Athletics Center. UnderDeFilippo’s leadership, 372 BC student-athletesmaintained a grade point average of 3.0 or bet-ter during the 2005-06 academic year, earningthe Athletic Director’s Award for AcademicExcellence. The football team won the 2004American Football Coaches Association’sAcademic Achievement Award with a 100 per-cent graduation rate and BC’s graduation ratefor all student-athletes has consistently rankedin the nation’s top ten. Also under DeFilippo’sleadership, U.S. News & World Report honoredBoston College as one of the top 20 athleticsdepartments in the country.
DeFilippo has restructured the athletics pro-gram and hired top-notch administrators. Heinitiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athlet-ics facilities that includes new football practicefacilities, lighting, scoreboards and otherimprovements at Shea Field, renovations toConte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, two new soccer fieldson the Newton campus, new Field Turf forAlumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble tocover the stadium turf to provide an indoorpractice facility for all sports during the wintermonths.
DeFilippo was instrumental in raisingmoney to build the privately funded $27 mil-lion, 72,000-square-foot varsity athletics cen-ter in the north end zone of Alumni Stadium. The Yawkey Center houses the football pro-gram, the Office of Learning Resources forStudent-Athletes, and a large function area for
general University use, freeing up criticallyneeded space in Conte Forum for women’sathletics and other Olympic sports teams. After football moved into the Yawkey Center,in fact, work began on a multi-million dollarrenovation to Conte Forum to provide addi-tional locker room and office space for manyof BC’s 31 varsity sports.
DeFilippo renamed the Athletics As-sociation’s fundraising arm (formerly BlueChips) in honor of longtime Athletics DirectorBill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends ofBoston College Athletics contributed a record$15 million in 2006, highlighted by 45 commit-ments of $100,000 or more, the most six-figuregifts in the history of BC Athletics, representingan increase of more than 100 percent from justtwo years ago.
Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented theircommitment to Boston College this pastJanuary by announcing their pledge of$100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholar-ship will be awarded annually to a female stu-dent-athlete who demonstrates outstandingacademic achievement and financial need.“This is my ninth year at Boston College andAnne and I both are totally committed to thisinstitution and we believe wholeheartedly inwhat Boston College stands for,” DeFilipposaid. “Boston College has been so good to usthat we wanted to give something back and thisis a great opportunity for us to do it.”
In athletics competition, DeFilippo has over-seen some of the most successful seasons inBoston College Athletics history. During the

Few priorities are as vital to the mission of Boston College Athleticsas financial aid. BC will offer approximately 268 athletic scholarshipsthis year totaling nearly $12 million; this is among the largest annualexpenses in the athletic department. These scholarships, provided toour nearly 700 student-athletes in 31 sports, would not be possiblewithout the private support of alumni, parents and friends. Last year,BC Athletics raised more than $15 million with a large portion of thosefunds designated to offset the cost of our scholarships and to enhancethe athletics endowment in support of scholarships. The 2005-06 aca-demic year saw 45 commitments of $100,000 or more; the most lead-ership gifts in the history of BC Athletics.
In addition to funding scholarships, the Flynn Fund has supportedcountless facility improvements over the years. The football programmoved into the $27 million Yawkey Athletics Center in 2005. This 72,000-
square foot facility, which also houses the Office of Learning Resourcesfor Student-Athletes, was the first building on the Boston College cam-pus to be funded entirely through private support.
Throughout the 2005-06 season, many areas of Conte Forum havebeen updated and renovated. The women’s basketball program movedinto a new suite in 2005. Many of our Olympic Sport staffs alsoreceived new offices. Summer construction was completed on a newmen’s basketball suite and locker room. 2005 saw the construction ofa field hockey and women’s lacrosse turf field on the Newton Campus. In 2004, FieldTurf, a state-of-the-art synthetic grass-like surface, wasinstalled in Alumni Stadium and the baseball field received a newscoreboard.

Opportunities exist to establish a namedendowed fund that will benefit our student-ath-letes perpetually. An endowment is a donation, which is invested, and the interest generatedfrom the principal is used to fund a specificneed of the Athletic Department in accordancewith the donor’s wishes, i.e. athletic scholar-ships, coach’s salaries, operating expenses, etc.Donors who provide a gift to fund an endow-ment have the opportunity to permanently linktheir name or a loved one’s name to BostonCollege Athletics. Endowments can range froma $1,000,000 coach’s endowment, to a $900,000fully funded athletic scholarship, to a $600,000tuition scholarship, to a $100,000 partially fund-ed scholarship. An endowed scholarship giftcan be paid over a period of years and willestablish your commitment to Boston CollegeAthletics in perpetuity.
Donors who participate in the endowedscholarship program are invited to a Universitygathering each fall to meet the recipient of theirfund. They receive annual reports on their recip-ient as well as the performance of their fund.Endowed Scholarships are an everlasting wayto maintain a relationship with Eagles who wearthe maroon and gold.
For information on establishing an endowedfund please contact any member of our staff at617-552-0772.
In lieu of a multi-year commitment for anendowment, you may choose to participatein the Flynn Fund Scholar-Athletes Program. With a gift of $25,000, a donor may fund thescholarship of a single student-athlete in anyathletics program for an entire year. The giftprovides the University with resources it canuse immediately to provide financial-aid toone of our 700 student-athletes.
The student-athletes are informed oftheir scholarships, and the donors receiveinformation about the student-athletes whobenefit from their generosity. Donors are invited to an annual gathering with the student-athlete they support where they will meet the recipients who have benefited from this pro-gram. This initiative enables donors to make a direct and immediate impact on BC’s abili-ty to provide scholarships.
To become a Flynn Fund Scholar-Athlete Donor please call 617-552-0772.
