Game 2 • SMU 47, Texas State 36Sept. 6, 2008 • Gerald F. Ford Stadium • Dallas, Texas

Bo Levi Mitchell threw fi ve touchdown passes and SMU beat Texas State 47-36 on Saturday night, ending an 11-game losing streak and making coach June Jones a winner in his fi rst home game. Jones is the fi rst SMU coach to win a home opener since Bobby Collins in 1982. Offense is Jones’ specialty, and his touch was evident from the start, with Mitchell and Emmanuel Sand-ers hooking up for touchdown passes of 21, 8 and 35 yards in the fi rst half alone. Aldrick Robinson also had a 32-yarder mixed in as SMU went up 30-6 in the second quarter. But Texas State scored with 2 seconds left in the half and kept inching closer. The Bobcats cut it to 40-29 in the fourth quarter on Cameron Luke’s third touchdown catch. Then it was Mitchell’s turn again. Facing third-and-9 from his 29, the true freshman hit Sanders for 24 yards, then hit Robinson in the end zone from the 34. Texas State scored again with 2:41 left, but Sanders snagged an onside kick attempt. The Mustangs drove just shy of the goal line but opted to take a knee rather than trying to crack 50 points. Mitchell was 24-of-37 for 370 yards. Robinson had 172 yards receiving and Sanders had 138, each with eight receptions.

Game 1 • Rice 56, SMU 27Aug. 29, 2008 • Rice Stadium • Houston, Texas

Chase Clement threw six touchdown passes - three to Jarett Dillard - to lead Rice to a 56-27 victory over SMU on Friday night. Clement was 24-of-37 for 258 yards, helping the Owls overcome an early 13-point defi cit. Clement added 87 yards rushing on 13 carries. Dillard caught seven passes for 89 yards, including scores of 21, 9 and 8 yards. The Owls defense also got in on the act, as Andrew Sendejo returned an interception of Bo Levi Mitchell 55 yards for a touchdown. Rice forced two fumbles and had three interceptions. Mitchell, a true freshman, was 25-of-43 for 244 yards and three touchdowns. He helped the Mustangs to a 13-0 lead in the fi rst 13 minutes, hitting Aldrick Robinson and Bradley Haynes with 26- and 19-yard touchdown passes. But the Owls scored 14 points in the last 52 seconds of the fi rst quarter to take a 14-13 lead. Clement hit Casey with 52 seconds left and added a 35-yard score when he connected with Randolph as time expired in the fi rst quarter. Mitchell hit Emmanuel Sanders with a 22-yard touchdown on the third play of the second half to make it 28-20, but that was as close as the Mustangs would get. The Owls added three scores in the next 97 seconds to take a 49-20 lead.

the Mustangs turned the ball over on three of their fi rst four possessions. Bo Levi Mitchell drove the Mustangs to the Red Raiders’ 26 and 1 in the fi rst half, but came away empty. Mitchell, who was 13-of-24 for 155 yards, found his greatest success through the air to Emmanuel Sanders. Sanders caught eight passes for 125 yards. It was his fourth-straight game going back to last season in which he had at least eight catches and 100-plus yards. Mitchell went out midway through the third quarter and was replaced by Logan Turner, who threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson late in the fourth quarter for the Mustangs’ lone score.

Game 5 • Tulane 34, SMU 27Sept. 25, 2008 • The Superdome • New Orleans, La.

Kevin Moore passed for three touchdowns and Andre Anderson ran for 219 yards and a score, leading Tulane to a 34-27 victory over SMU. June Jones’ spread offense continues to be a work in progress at SMU, but showed promise in spurts. Bo Levi Mitchell was 21-of-44 for 256 yards and three TDs. Tulane gave SMU hope with a pair of turnovers in the third quarter. Kasey Stelly’s fumble, recovered by Derrius Bell on the Tulane 33, set up Thomas Morstead’s 25-yard fi eld goal. The Green Wave then drove to the SMU 18, only to turn the ball over again when Moore’s fi rst-down pass was intercepted by Justin Smart and returned 35 yards to the SMU 45. That led to Morstead’s 49-yard fi eld goal. Facing fourth-and-3 on the Tulane 31 on its next series, SMU converted when Mitchell found Emmanuel Sanders for a 13-yard gain. Mitchell went right back to Sanders on the next play for an 18-yard score that pulled the Mustangs to 31-20 early in the fourth quarter. Tulane managed only Ross Thevenot’s 33-yard fi eld goal in the second half, which gave the Green Wave a 34-20 lead with about four minutes to go. Mitchell’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Wilkerson pulled SMU to 34-27 with 2:03 left. SMU then chose to kick deep, but couldn’t stop Anderson, whose 40-yard run to the SMU 42 on the second play of Tulane’s fi nal drive sealed the victory.

Game 6 • UCF 31, SMU 17Oct. 4, 2008 • Brighthouse Networks Stadium • Orlando, Fla.

Despite 351 yards passing from Bo Levi Mitchell, SMU was unable to overtake UCF, falling 31-17. UCF’s Michael Greco took over for starter Rob Calabrese at the start of the second half and engineered three scoring drives to break a 10-10 halftime tie. He hit Brian Watters with a 56-yard scoring pass in the third quarter and then sealed the game with a 15-yard strike to Khymest Williams with 1:34 left in the fourth. SMU receiver Aldrick Robinson had 10 catches for a career-high 210 yards, including a 94-yard scoring pass from Mitchell that drew the Mustangs within 24-17 with 13 minutes left in the game. The Mustangs could not convert an onside kick attempt on the ensuing kickoff and UCF put the game away when Greco found Williams in the end zone with 1:34 remaining in the game. Mitchell fi nished the game, going 29 of 45 for 351 yards a touchdown.

The teams traded fi eld goals and long scoring drives in a fi rst half that ended 10-10. SMU’s Andrew McKinney bulled in from 1 yard out to fi nish off a 77-yard drive and Thomas Morestead booted a 33-yard fi eld goal to give the Mustangs a 10-3 fi rst-quarter lead.

Game 7 • Tulsa 29, SMU 23Oct. 11, 2008 • Gerald J. Ford Stadium • Dallas, Texas

A.J. Whitmore scored on an 8-yard run with 8:40 left to help lead Tulsa to a narrow 37-31 victory over SMU on Saturday night. Tulsa trailed 31-24 heading into the fourth quarter before scoring twice in just over a minute to take the lead for good. Johnson hit Trae Johnson for a 33-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-21 to tie the game at 31 with 9:53 remaining. Tulsa’s DeAundre Brown then intercepted Bo Levi Mitchell on the fi rst play of the ensuing drive to give the Golden Hur-ricane the ball at the Mustangs’ 26. Whitmore scored three plays later to put Tulsa on top for good. Mitchell’s 77-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders had given the Mustangs a 31-24 lead. The Mustangs drove to the TU 26 in the fi nal minute. Mitchell threw toward an open Cole Beasley in the end zone, but Beasley dropped the pass that would have given SMU the lead. Mitchell’s fourth-and-2 pass was just beyond the out-stretched hands of Sanders, and Tulsa got the ball back on downs and ran out the fi nal seconds.

Game 8 • Houston 44, SMU 38Oct. 18, 2008 • Gerald J. Ford Stadium • Dallas, Texas

Case Keenum threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Tyron Carrier with 24 seconds left as Houston rallied to beat SMU 44-38. Houston trailed 35-23 heading into the fourth quarter before engineering a comeback. Trailing 38-36, the Cougars got the ball at their own 15 with 1:58 left. Keenum capped the comeback with a TD pass to Carrier, who made a nice over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone. Bo Levi Mitchell was 29-of-39 for 365 yards and four touchdowns, and Aldrick Robinson had 186 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Mustangs. Keenum’s 9-yard touchdown run brought the Cougars within 35-30 early in the fourth. After an SMU fi eld goal, Beall scored on a 1-yard run but Houston’s two-point conversion attempt to tie the game failed. The Mustangs were forced to punt on their next possession, setting up the Cougars’ game-winning drive. Mitchell’s desperation pass from near midfi eld on the fi nal play of the game was intercepted. SMU jumped out to a 21-7 lead thanks to Mitchell’s fi rst TD run of the season and two scoring passes to Emmanuel Sanders, who set the SMU school record with 26 touchdown receptions. The Cougars crept within 21-17 early in the third. Mitchell tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Robinson, including a 70-yarder on the fi nal play of the third quarter to extend SMU’s lead to 35-23.

Ricky Dobbs ran for 224 yards and four touchdowns on 42 carries as Navy bettered SMU, 34-7, on Oct. 25. The game was played in a downpour, and the second half was played before a crowd of just several thousand. Dobbs, a third-string quarterback, replaced Jarod Bryant, who injured his right shoulder on a 20-yard run in the first quarter, and quickly directed the Midshipmen to two touchdowns on runs of 2 and 5 yards. He carried the ball on his first eight plays. Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo reinserted Bryant early in the second quarter, but he was hurt again six plays later. Dobbs returned and two plays later ran for 38 yards, and scored from a yard out on the next play. He added a 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter. SMU, which began the game 11th in the nation in passing, averaging 302 yards per game, was held to 144 yards - 27 in the second half - and trailed 27-0 at halftime. Bo Levi Mitchell, the Mustangs’ freshman quarterback, had a pass intercepted by the Mids’ Jeff Deliz in the first half. He’s had 19 passes picked - most in the nation. Mitchell, who threw four touchdown passes in each of

his last two games, was 16-for-28 for 157 yards. SMU scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Aldrick Robinson with 5:25 to play in the third quarter. Robinson, who entered the game leading the nation in receiving yards, had seven catches for 94 yards. It was his 11th touchdown reception this season, tying Emanuel Tolbert’s school record set in 1978 for most in a season.
