Brethren, In the last few days I’ve been reflecting on my position in life. I sometimes feel that all I’m doing is work, work, work. Sometimes I wonder why am I doing this? Am I living to just work or is there a purpose to what I’m doing? It’s not that I dislike my job or the people I work with is just sometimes feels mundane and dispassionate. After some more reflection I realized that I’m, not just doing a job for someone else, but I’m building my personal temple. I’m building myself, my character, my abilities. As Freemasons of old who built King Solomons temple, we as speculative Freemason build our temples as a symbol of character. Throughout my job there as been many opportunities that I could have deceived or lied and even have been encouraged by my superiors to do so, but I chose not to. I always remember to to do square and true work throughout my work life and to keep my desires and passions within due bounds. In the long run this has saved me and the results have always turned out for the best. Sometimes we feel we have plat-eaued, but we haven’t. We are always growing and learning as long as we are working. Work is the foun-dation stone in Freemasonry and the work ethic is the foundation stone of the American Way of life. Building ourselves and temples we must reflect on work. Work involves planning and securing of re-sources to convert the material or concept into a finished product. We must surround ourselves with other workers that have the same work ethic, so that the finished product is sound. If we don’t plan our work and correctly and use the best materials the end product may not last. For this reason, work in necessary to build a man’s character. On another note we will be tired and there will be times when we all feel overwhelmed, but we are taught to divide out time into three equal parts. A part for work, God, and rest. Life is about balance and harmony. We must try our best to keep the scale balanced and continue to grow and Freemasons. Furthermore, I believe we are building a strong foundation here at Sun City Long e#72. We have candidates that are learning the craft and will be able to help us build a strong foundation at this lodge. I hope this message finds you all well and that we continue in the next months to building ourselves as strong temples like the Freemasons that built King Solomon’s temple

Sincerely and Fraternally, Mark Nelson

It’s Spring and it almost feels like summer is around the corner. Where does the time go? It’s the same every year. The Holidays are crazy, and you start to settle down in January. In your job there are new goals, projects and people. By March you are in the grove. Life has assumed that hectic recurring sched-ule. This happens every year. I suggest you try to break your normal schedule and insert something different into it every year. Diversify your portfolio and do something that is unlike you. In the Masonic world this could be attending an event, visiting another Lodge, Court, Chapter, Bethel, etc. You never know what you may find there. Change and opportunity always come in the ways not expected. You may be somewhere at an event where you have a conversation with someone that really helped them. Most of the time you don’t even know this happened. Everyone has the power to be that one catalyst of change, hope and inspiration. I’m sure you all know the most famous of these tales when 2 or people tell the same thing, and you still don’t believe it, and then the 4

th person tells you and you’re instantly sold. Off you go!

One cannot accomplish this without interaction with others in places with unrehearsed casual conversa-tions. Human nature is free, and we should try to exploit that every chance we can.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Mike Rial Senior Warden

Dear Brethren,

I hope this article finds you well. Our annual Awards Night this past March got me thinking about all that you do for this lodge. So many

brothers pitch-in and contribute so much to our lodge and fellow brother and sisters. I greatly appreciate all you do to help make us all

successful.

It also reminds me of a story I read on a rainy morning. We try to bring our kids up to northern Minnesota every summer for vacation at

my wife’s family lake cabin – away from the computers, TV, and other electronics. Fishing, boating, swimming, catching frogs and turtles,

or whatever other critters we can. One morning a number of years ago, it was raining pretty heavily, so I went to the bookshelf and pulled

a collection from Reader’s Digest to pass the time and am so glad I did.

I happened upon a biography of Most Worshipful Brother Benjamin Franklin. Wow – if you ever want to feel like an underachiever, this is

the story to read - there certainly is a reason he is featured on the C-note! While I learned about some of his achievements in school, I was

shocked to learn there was so much more that was not taught. I hope you find some of the following facts (some Masonic, some not)

about our illustrious brother amusing and interesting.

Brother Franklin, on top of being pivotal in the founding of our country, a noteworthy statesman, philosopher, publisher, and is accredited

with many inventions, among other things:

He was the 10th of 17 children, whose formal education ended by age 10.

Inventor of the lightning rod, a fire company, the library, the odometer, the insurance company and even had a heavy hand in the

founding of the University of Pennsylvania (and served as President of the institution until 1755).

Initiated into St. John’s lodge in 1730 or 1731 – elected Grand Master in PA in 1734!

In 1734 he printed the first masonic book in America – the Constitutions of the Free-Masons.

In 1752 he was put on a committee for the first masonic building in the U.S., the “Freemason’s Lodge” in Philadelphia.

He assisted in the initiation of Voltaire in 1778, and also in masonic funeral services for the same brother in the same year.

I’d encourage you to check into the amazing life of our Most Worshipful Brother Franklin – it will not disappoint.

“Masonic labor is purely a labor of love...” – Benjamin Franklin

This month’s Stated Meeting dinner will feature fried cod, potatoes, cole slaw, and dessert. Please RSVP to me (my email is below) to en-

sure we prepare enough meals for all wanting to join us for dinner. I hope to see you there.

Sun City Masonic Investment Trust –Investing In the Future

When the Sun City Masonic Center was first established, a number of masonic related people contributed their

time and resources to developing the building and property. Part of their efforts were to establish an investment

trust to provide financial support for a place where Masonic related groups and activities could be conducted. To-

day, the Sun City Masonic Investment Trust is administered by 5 Trustees elected for individual rotating 5 year

terms of office by members of Sun City Masonic Lodge. The Chairman of the Investment Trust Board is Randall

Sturdevant. Members of the Investment Trust must be members of Sun City Masonic Lodge.

The legacy established 30-40 years ago has developed into a Masonic Center which is used by many groups and

many of us enjoy today. With the expenses of today, the Sun City Masonic Center is not self-sustaining and de-

pends on donations from the group using the Masonic Center and the proceeds from the Trust investments. The

proceeds from the invested Trust principal are disbursed periodically and no longer provide a sufficient amount to

cover the ever increasing costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the building and grounds.

The Investment Trust Board oversees the investments and provides, pursuant to the Trust Agreement, a quarterly

amount that is distributed to assist with the operation of the Sun City Masonic Center. The principal of the Invest-

ment Trust was established through donations and contributions by members of the Masonic groups using the Sun

City Masonic Center. The Investment Trust continues to need donations and contributions to maintain and grow a

Trust principal that will provide for the future operating expenses of the Masonic Center.

Individuals, or the groups, desiring to assist in enhancing the legacy or those who founded the Sun City Masonic

Center, are always welcome to make contributions and donations to the Investment Trust principal. Donations and

contributions directed to growing the Investment Trust need to be specifically identified for the Investment Trust and

directed for adding to the invested principal. Routine donations and contributions made to Sun City Lodge No 72

assist the Lodge with current expenses but are not used to grow the principal of the Investment Trust. Individuals

and groups interested in exploring the opportunity to make a direct contribution to growing the Investment Trust

principal should contact Randall Sturdevant at 623.217.9426 or

[email protected].

our Masonic order may attend. The description given by HL Ramona as to some highlights for her year, we are in for a lot of

fun activities – so beware – you might like to come and be an active member again.

Our Grand Court Session is just around the corner, May 2-4, at the 4 Points Sheridan located at the NE corner of I17 and Peoria

Avenue. If you don’t have your reservations in – please do soon as you may not get a room. As to registration for this session,

send your form and check to HL Pat Zimmerman, 4913 W Townley Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85302

Looking down the road once again, we will have one more meeting of this current term on May 13 which some officers will

have to give their term reports. For some it will be a chance to take a deep breath and be proud of the work that they have done.

For others, it will be a chance to be an officer in a different position. With that thought in mind, would you believe that the new

term will have all NEW officers in the court line taking that leap forward. We are so proud of all of you.

Also for those who still have an interest in attending our Job Daughters Bethel #22, they will also have a new term of officers

starting with their installation of officers on May 4 at 6pm. But check with the lodge office to be sure of the time.

Pat Zimmerman, Secretary

JOBS DAUGHTERS, BETHEL 22

During the past several weeks, Valley of the Sun Chapter has been active with supporting the Arizona Archery Enterprises (AAE) Arizona Cup professional archery competition at Ben Avery Range. Below are pictures of a number of DeMolay members and family members from Valley of the Sun Chapter as well as Glendale Chapter and Phoenix Chapter. These Chapter supporters assisted with the several Saturdays of set up activity as well as supporting important activity during the actual competition that took place on 05/06/07 April. The AAE support activity is a major part of the Chapter’s activity for March and April. Also in April, a cookout is planned for the last Saturday of the month.

The Chapter received financial support from Horizon Court, Order of the Amaranth and Sun City West High 12 Club during the month.

DeMolay is a Masonic youth organization for young men. To be eligible to join DeMolay, three simple requirements need to be met by the applicant:

+ You are a young man between the ages of 12 and 21;

+ You are of good moral character; and,

+ And you believe in a supreme being (all religions welcome).

DeMolay Chapters confer two degrees for membership. The members engage in a variety of service and fun activities. Service events in-clude working with adult Masonic groups and working in local community charity events. DeMolay members enjoy social activities with members of locally Masonic sponsored Rainbow Girl Assemblies and Job’s Daughter Bethels, as well as recreational events involving sports and electronic game challenges. The Chapter events and meetings are planned and run by the youth Chapter officers with guidance from the Dad Advisor.

Valley of the Sun DeMolay Chapter regularly meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month at 4:00 PM at the Sun City Masonic Center. Currently, the following local Master Masons serve on the Valley of the Sun Chapter Advisory Council: Bryon Howe; Matt Link; Dave Lowry; Dave Miller; and, Craig Montgomery. For further information about becoming a member of DeMolay or how to become a member of the Advisory Council, contact Paul Brown at 602.708.1666 or [email protected].
