SEPTEMBER 06 MASTER OF CEREMONIES – Brian Hoover. Brian entertained us with a pleasant mixture of songs, historical information and some jokes.

SPEAKER- Don Crawford Today’s speaker was club member and retired

lawyer Don Crawford who provided a summary of estate related matters including, wills, power of attorney and marriage contracts. Limiting the amount of tax paid on death is entirely legal and all taxpayers are entitled to arrange their affairs in such a way as to attract as small a tax bill as allowed within the rules.

Care should be taken in the selection of words used in all legal documents and in particular the execution of a general power of attorney for property which grants unlimited power to the person or persons named. Executors should be chosen for their integrity and knowledge. They are entitled to compensation. Wills containing longer term trusts may well be better served by the naming of a corporate executor and trustee.

The club members appreciated the message delivered and the speaker was thanked for his presentation.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES – Rick Beyers. Rick, the Choir and the MusicMakers entertained with selections from the new song book, such as Beyond the Sea, Blowing in the Wind and Canadian Sunset. Rick had some unique dentist jokes which he said were from real experience.

SPEAKERS- Michael Gordon and Chris Hazel. Brian Pounder introduced Michael Gordon who has B. Comm. and MBA degrees, and Chris Hazel who has MBA and B. Laws degrees and is a former diplomat. These gentlemen are the President and Vice-President of The Community Foundation of Orillia and Area. The Foundation is a locally run, public foundation that builds and manages permanent endowment funds from charitable donations. It accepts contributions from donors, invests them for long term growth and distributes the earnings to local charities based on their needs and the needs of the community.

This Foundation is one of 180 local community foundations in Canada and serves the communities of Orillia, Ramara, Severn, Oro-Medonte and the Chippewas of Rama. Since 1999, the CFOA has been connecting donors to local charities that work to address our most pressing community needs. They bring donors to the table as community builders - They work with donors to realize matching their interests and concerns with local charities addressing community needs. They take a broad and inclusive view of what community is and what it needs to succeed: everything from shelter, food and care for those most in need, to recreation, the arts, and the environment. They make giving easy - With their ability to accept almost any kind of gift (cash, securities and real estate) and with their ability to satisfy almost any donor interest, they make it easy for donors to give back to our community. Larry Fitzhenry thanked the speakers.

Mike Jones was acting Captain and filling in for President Pat Verner. Is this a subtle coup or a friendly take-over? Roger Lippert was standing in as the First Mate.

Mike Jones reminded folks about the AGM and the dress code is in effect for board members. Brian Pounder one of the Minute men reminded members of an upcoming Lakehead University presentation regarding a slide show dealing with a trip around the world. It takes place on October 12th starting at 6 pm. Hal Taylor reminded members of the importance of 2017 as far as Canada is concerned. First, it is the 150th anniversary of Confederation and also the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which of course was the event that marked the emergence of Canada as a nation in the world. April 11th will be the time for a special event at our meeting to remember the Battle and the sacrifice Canadian soldiers made at Vimy Ridge, which is now an official part of Canada in France. Anyone who wants to get involved in the organization of the presentation is asked to contact Hal. MASTER OF CEREMONIES – Tony Shaw. Tony Shaw was the MC and led the group with a number of jokes (bad) and a few songs. SPEAKER- Michael Martyn The speaker was Michael Martyn of the Huronia Cultural Campus (Foundation). Michael Martyn is a musician and artist, former employee with Orillia as a Cultural advisor and has recently received his MBA from the Schulich School of Business from the University of Toronto. Given his background, he is a perfect spokesperson for the Huronia Cultural Campus. Mr. Martyn gave us a brief outline about the purpose of the Centre and how it will be similar to the Banff Centre as far as hosting and

promoting cultural and artistic events are concerned. He provided a brief 7 minute video that showed what the centre could look like in the not too distant future. Mr. Martyn says a number of groups and organizations are behind this initiative and realize the importance this will have on the future of Orillia, in regard to tourism and economic development. He also says this could be a catalyst in ensuring that some young people from Orillia actually stay in the community and work and live in the city.

The big question mark surrounding this whole proposal is the Provincial Government. What grounds of the HRC will be declared as surplus and what form of grant/funding will be available for the Cultural Campus. He also said the City of Orillia has a say in the development of the site as well. Mr. Martyn emphasised that this is not a short term project, but a long term objective that will begin small and then expand to attract cultural and artistic groups from across the province to make the Huronia Cultural Campus their home away from home.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES – John Watkins.

AGM AND THE INDUCTION OF THE NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 2016-2017. Orillia Councillor Ted Emond officiated at the swearing in of the board which consists of: President Mike Jones, Vice President Bob Bowles, Past President Pat Verner, Secretary John Cropper, Treasurer Jim Saunders and Assistant Treasurer John Bobyk. The rest of the Directors are: Rae Hutt, John Smalley, Keith Elliot, Dave Austin, Jim Campbell, Larry Fitzhenry, Bill Zufelt, Tony Shaw, Hal Taylor and Bill Instance. Following the induction, President Pat Verner outlined what was accomplished during his term of office. That includes the fact that the whole membership of the club is involved in the running of the group. “We all run the show”. Verner also paid tribute to the Music Makers for putting together a new music book that brings new and updated music to the meetings. Incoming President Mike Jones then addressed the assembly and thanked all the past board members and presidents for their efforts on making the Champlain Seniors Service Club the vibrant and inclusive club it is today.

Jones went on to point out that 2017 is a special year for Canada and Orillia. It is the Sesquicentennial year of the founding of Canada and the 150th anniversary of Orillia’s incorporation as a municipality. John Smalley and Dave Godward asked members of the Club to either get involved in a special committee to help organizers arrange guest speakers or at

least come forward with suggestions as to who may be an interesting speaker for the Club.

Victor Samuel Koby Memorial Service

A Celebration of Victor's life will be held at Hawk Ridge Golf Club in Orillia, Friday, October 7th, 1:00 to 4:00. ________________________________________

Victor passed away peacefully at home in Orillia, early in the morning of Wednesday, September 21, 2016, in his 91st year. Survived by his wife Helen; daughter Louise (predeceased), Clara and Fergus; son Robert (Denise), Victoria, Alexandra, Sydney, Kori, Heather; son Raines (Catherine), Lillian, Madeline, Benjamin; and the very recent addition, great granddaughter Charlotte. Victor was born in 1926 in London, England, his parents, Arkady and Rachel having fled the upheavals in Russia several years before. Victor was bundled off to Oundle school to board at age seven which he described in Dickinsonian terms for effect. In 1940 he was sent to Canada out of harm's way to Pickering School outside of Toronto. In 1945 a very short stint in the Air Force was thankfully ended as the war was over. That stint however left him with a lifelong interest in flying. Off to Western University where he studied Economics and Journalism, he met his first wife Glenadene Bauer. After a term at the London Ontario Free Press he received a fellowship to London School of Economics for graduate work. Back to Ontario, Victor and Glenadene were married and he embarked upon a journalism career with Maclean Hunter. Back to England, Victor worked as a stringer for several publications, including the Financial Post and Maclean's. After daughter Louise was born in England, the family moved back to Ontario where Robert and Raines joined the family. Victor soon embarked on a new career with Field Aviation. After a short while in Toronto, the family moved to Ottawa for three years, then back to Toronto. Ever the restless questioner

Victor moved on with his endeavors consulting primarily in communications. Victor met Helen Kupari and they were married in 1975 and set up a much beloved house on Governors Road in Toronto. In 1979, Victor wanting to operate his own concern, acquired Hunter Enterprises in Orillia which he operated until his retirement from Hunter in 1996. Victor and Helen built a house on Eight Mile Point on Lake Simcoe just outside of Orillia which soon became the center of family gatherings for years to come. Finally, in 2005 they settled in closer to Orillia. Upon retirement from Hunter, Victor involved himself with various consulting projects including travelling to Poland and Romania for CESO, imparting his free market wisdom. Locally in Orillia, Victor kept busy making sure local politicians were accountable for all things as they should be done, as well as being very active in the Champlain Seniors Service club. Over the years Victor had many extracurricular enthusiasms including squash, tennis, skiing, the Railroad bridge club and golf but probably his most beloved activity was sailing Highland Fling with Helen out of the RCYC, as well a number of bareboat sailing adventures with Helen and friends in the Caribbean. In golf, Victor was unique in becoming more accomplished as he moved through his 80's, almost shooting his age at 89 and getting his only hole in one at 88. His love of outdoor activities was passed on to his children and by extension his grandchildren. Swimming with Grandpa at Eight Mile Point was a loved activity, especially by the parents lounging on the deck. Around the dinner table with the grandchildren, and by default with their prospective partners as years went on, Vic would generally get to what their respective passions were and what they were going to do with the rest of their lives, always an entertaining spectator sport. Victor's enthusiasm and interest in all things near and far lasted right up to the end. He will be greatly missed by family and friends but we are grateful for his long and interesting life, and short merciful end. Special thanks to Dr. Kim McIntosh for all her care. A Celebration of Victor's life will be held at Hawk Ridge Golf Club in Orillia, Friday, October 7th, 1:00 to 4:00. Please, in lieu of flowers, donations to Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Orillia would be appreciated.
