These colorful bedcovers were received and blessed by the congregation at the 10:00 service, February 8th. They are the results of a four month-long project. More than 15 parishioners and friends joined hands and hearts to tear, stitch, pin and tie cotton fabrics together in beautiful, original patterns. They taught each other new tricks in quilting, made new friends, and shared the pleasure of knowing that each of the recipients will have warm covers when the weather is cold. Now that their initial goal has been met, the quilters will be making new quilts on an “as needed” basis. They have developed good working methods and have a system in place, so starting a new quilt will be easy. A quilt was given to long-time Christ Church member, Ann Krieger, who was very surprised and pleased to be remembered in this way by members of her parish. Quilt gifts will continue to be given to parishioners who are homebound or in nursing homes. This has been a wonderful outreach project for everyone who participated, and it will keep going, whenever a need is identified. In the meantime, donations of unused or new cotton fabric in patterns and solid colors (no clothing, polyester, upholstery, or sheers, however) are most welcome. -Randy Frost

Confirmation run to Food Bank a resounding success!!“The United Interfaith Food Bank would like to thank Christ Church of Bronxville for their abundant and generous food donation. On March 19th the Confirmation classes delivered many bags of food to the UIFB in Scarsdale. The kids then unpacked bags and boxes of food, repacked 70 bags for the recipients, prepared a bulk distribution, and organized storage cabinets with the leftover food for the next delivery. They were even able to squeeze in a game of Foosball!”The UIFB supplies 35 bags of non-perishable food twice a month to each of three pantries in the Bronx: St. Brendan’s Catholic Church, the Bronx Jewish Community Council, and Thorpe Family Residence. These centers provide assistance to families and seniors from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. If you would like to donate or learn more about the UIFB, please contact Erin Ryan at 914-420-2593.

Pig Tales: A Bronxville-Wide Outreach Effort for Malawi

In time for Mother’s Day, Christ Church is taking the lead on a Bronxville-wide Women’s Empowerment project in partnership with the Mothers’ Union of the Diocese of Southern Malawi. The Reformed Church Sunday School, the Village Lutheran Church Sunday School, and St. Joseph’s Nursery School are

joining the Eliza Corwin Frost Child Center and Christ Church’s Sunday School to raise funds for a piggery at St. Paul’s Parish in Malawi. Children will tell their mom’s how much they love them by helping a mom in Malawi support her children. The funds raised will cover the start-up costs for a self-help project designed to provide income and self-esteem to some amazing women in a very poor part of our world.

EYCMaundy Thursday Lock-InOn Maundy Thursday the teens in the EYC will take part in their annual Maundy Thursday Lock-In. The teens will sing Taizé songs and keep vigil over the Blessed Sacrament at different periods throughout the night. In between vigil shifts the teens will decorate this year’s Paschal candle (the candle lighted at Easter, Baptisms and funerals), watch movies, eat and hang out. It is one of the most loved nights in the EYC year. It gives the teens respite right before spring hustle and bustle begins, and is a time to reconnect with Taizé songs two months after their annual pilgrimage to the Taizé monastery in France.

EYC Mission Trip to GeorgiaRegistration Due! Registration for this year’s EYC Mission Trip to Georgia was due last month. Still planning to register but haven’t turned in your forms? We will continue accepting them for a short time. Please send them to Krista Miller at the church along with a $500 non-refundable deposit. Forms are available for download at ccbny.org. Please know that we understand this is a tough year economically for many families. We will do our best to find funding for students in need of financial aid. Just email Krista Miller at [email protected].

August 9th - 16th the EYC will serve others through various organizations in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. The early part of the week will be spent repairing homes in the developing community of Covington, Georgia. The second half of the week will be spent in downtown Atlanta at Episcopal social service organization Emmaus House. While at Emmaus House the teens will serve the homeless, spend time with the elderly, work with area children and experience the culture of Atlanta’s inner city. There will also be plenty of time for fun activities such as an Atlanta Braves game, whitewater rafting or some “outdoorsy” thing like it, a trip to the Georgia aquarium and more. This trip will be a wonderful opportunity for our teenagers to experience southern culture,

develop a relationship with people who are different from themselves, serve others in need and gain some great practical skills. We hope that all of the teens will take advantage of this life changing opportunity! -Krista Miller

Only 6 seats left on the bus to Montreal! The Christ Church Choir, Schola Cantorum, and VFL trebles are headed to Montreal on April 24-26. The tour will include seeing our new organ for the first time, two choir concerts, and sightseeing in Montreal. There are 6 seats left on the bus – if you would like to fill them up – talk to Christopher Wells. The individual cost of the trip is $400 for the three-day trip.

Sponsors needed for ChoristersChoristers love Choir Tours – it’s the chance to share their talent with the rest of the world, sit on a bus with their favorite friends, have sleepovers in big cities. But choir tours also cost money! Would you consider sponsoring a chorister to go to Montreal? Or even part of a chorister? The cost is $400, but gifts of all levels are accepted.

On Monday, March 16th, Christ Church Bronxville was turned into a Broadway theatre for the night as Drama Desk award-winning Broadway Music Director Mary Mitchell Campbell led an all-star list of performers in a benefit concert for Young At Arts.Performers at this year’s benefit included Broadway’s Tituss Burgess (Nicely Nicely in Guys and Dolls), Kate Baldwin (The Full Monty), Sara Ford (Wicked), Anthony Holds (Dracula) and Ben Rosebury (Forever Plaid). The talent from Broadway was complemented by performances featuring the students from Young At Arts. The benefit was sponsored by Wine & Spirits Emporium of Bronxville and ASTEP, Artists Striving To End Poverty. Honorary co-chairs were Mayor Mary Marvin of Bronxville and Mayor Clinton Young of Mount Vernon. Bronxville and Mount Vernon are two of the communities benefiting from the programs of Young At Arts. All proceeds benefited the after-school performing arts programs of Young At Arts. Young At Arts, an Outreach of Christ Church Bronxville and the recent recipient of an “All Our Children” grant from the Episcopal Diocese of New York and Trinity Church Wall Street, is at the forefront of filling in the arts education gap resulting from budget cuts in the public school system.

Outreach - The Bronx River Conservancy: A good day was had by all!

Pierre Bonnard ,The Dessert, 1940

We had a great day clearing vines and picking up litter on a 300 yard stretch of the Bronx River Reservation on Vermont Terrace across from the Crestwood railroad station. We started a little before noon and there were folks still working at 4 pm as we had a rolling group of volunteers during the afternoon with loppers, clippers, saws and trash bags. You can really see the difference. PG, Deborah Ross, Barbara McGrath and I cut vines together- it is great to chat with one’s fellow workers! What an interesting group!

There were many others, of course, and we were joined by some

regular “every other Sunday” vine cutters. Over the years, it seems the younger children have had the most fun as they go on a treasure hunt to find all kinds of stuff (a lot of it interesting), filling large trash bags. Then again there were adults who didn’t want to stop when the 4 pm quitting time came around. Thank you Christ Church, Bronxville! -Jim Sutton
