All State Orchestra Background Information

The members of the South Dakota All State Orchestra are selected each fall

by competitive auditions at three sites around the state. A full symphony

orchestra is then selected from among the best musicians in South Dakota.

This year’s orchestra has 155 musicians representing 32 schools.

ALL-STATE ORCHESTRA GUEST CONDUCTOR

Brian Cole

Moorhead, MN

Brian Cole has been an orchestra teacher in the Moorhead,

MN public school district since 1995. Originally from Mar-

shall, MN, Brian graduated from the University of South

Dakota, received his Masters of Music in orchestra con-

ducting from the University of Northern Colorado, and has

received post-graduate credits from The Ohio State Univer-

sity.. Cole also is a conductor with the Fargo Moorhead

Area Youth Symphony. His hockey jersey-clad orchestras

have been invited to play at both state and national conven-

tions including the Minnesota Music Educators Conference, the Midwest Band

and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and the American String Teacher's National

Convention.

During his tenure, enrollment in Moorhead’s orchestra program has grown from

210 to over 800. Brian and his orchestra colleague, Doug Neill, are strong believ-

ers in performing outreach concerts for rural schools. Since 1996, orchestras

from Moorhead have performed more than 85 concerts all throughout the upper

Midwest for schools without orchestra programs.

A frequent clinician, speaker, and guest conductor across the country, Mr. Cole

has appeared at music conventions in more than 20 states. Recent engagements

include: Georgia, Michigan, Kansas, Idaho, and Ohio. Brian was named Minne-

sota's string teacher of the year in 2003 by MNSOTA and was given the Heidi

Castleman Award from Chamber Music America in 2002. The Moorhead String

Program also is a past recipient of MNSOTA's Meritorious String Program

award. A football and track coach at his school, Cole is past chairman for

ASTA's National High School Honor's Orchestra. Brian and his wife, Deborah,

make their home in Moorhead with their three children.

All State Chorus and Orchestra: 1953-2011

In The Beginning . . . The South Dakota Music Educators Association (SDMEA) was established in Aberdeen in November

of 1948. During the 1950-1951 school year, the SDMEA discussed the possibility of forming an All

State Chorus and an All State Orchestra. Eventually the decision was made to sponsor an All State

Chorus and Orchestra in Huron on November 13 and 14, 1953 with Robert McCowan directing the

Chorus and Emmanuel Wishnow conducting the Orchestra. Following the success of this first All State

concert, the decision was made to sponsor an annual All State Chorus and Orchestra event

Establishment of Partnership with SDHSAA As co-curricular opportunities increased for high school students in South Dakota, scheduling of these

opportunities became more difficult. In 1965, the South Dakota High School Interscholastic Associa-

tion (now the South Dakota High School Activities Association or SDHSAA) included SDMEA activi-

ties to allow more efficient operations of all activities in the state. This has lead to a full partnership for

this wonderful event for the students and teachers of South Dakota. In addition to the administrational

leadership of SDHSAA, the SDMEA choral and orchestra chairpersons, along with the local chairper-

sons from the All State concert site are responsible for preparation and operation of the All State

event. For the last three years, SDMEA also hosts a comprehensive music education conference for all

South Dakota teachers in conjunction with the All State event that further enhances music education in

our state.

Chorus Quotas The quota system was established for the chorus in 1956. Since the initiation of this system, it has

been based on high school enrollment in each school. Every South Dakota high school is entitled to be

represented in the All State Chorus by at least one quartet. The larger schools (with a grade 9-11 en-

rollment of 725 or more students) are entitled to have five quartets.

Orchestra Auditions In the beginning the members of the orchestra were selected by their directors. They would arrive at

All State and audition for their chair positions. Following a near disaster in 1958 when a bus break-

down delayed the arrival of the orchestra students from Sioux Falls thereby delaying the auditions for

seating, the orchestra directors voted to initiate a system of taped auditions to allow for more efficient

use of rehearsal time. Auditions by tape presented many problems and the move to live auditions was

completed in 1962.

Event Location At one time the All State Chorus and Orchestra were scheduled on a five-year rotational basis in five

cities in South Dakota – Aberdeen, Huron, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Watertown. Largely due to

the size of the chorus and orchestra and the increased attendance at the concerts, the rotation has been

reduced to two locations. The current locations are Rapid City and Sioux Falls both have rehearsal

and concert facilities that are large enough and an adequate number of motels and hotels for the hous-

ing of the students, teachers and audience.

SDMEA Commissioned Works The SDMEA has continuously maintained a commitment to the continued development of quality

choral and orchestral literature. A number of compositions have been commissioned by the SDMEA

for premiere performances at All State concerts. The following is a listing of the All-State commis-

sioned compositions and their composers.

Anna Hamre

University of California, Fresno, CA

Anna Hamre is in demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudi-

cator, having made appearances outside the continental United States

in Hawaii, Mexico, China, Italy, Austria, and England. She has guest

-conducted twice at Carnegie Hall.

conducting and literature, and she is responsible for the management

of the choral program. She conducts the Concert Choir, Chamber

Singers, and Community Chorus Master Chorale and Coro Piccolo,

frequently collaborating with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra. Her

various positions have given her the opportunity to conduct numerous

new works, including the American premiere of Philip Wilby’s 2004 reconstruction of Mo-

zart’s Mass in C (Novello).

Dr. Hamre grew up in Willow Lake and Clark, SD. She holds a BA degree in vocal

and instrumental music education from Augustana College in Sioux Falls; an MM degree in

Counties Music Education Association Choral Educator Award (2003), and recognitions from

Fresno-State music fraternities.

Dr. Hamre is the author of The High-School/University Sight-Singer (Masterworks

Press of Olympia, WA), a music-literacy method in use in every state, plus the District of

Columbia, Guam, British Columbia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. Her new publication, The

Weekly Sight-Singer: An Abbreviated and Accelerated Method, was released in the summer

2011.

She has presented sessions for various choral-conducting and music-education or-

ganizations at local, state and national levels. Her articles have appeared in state music maga-

zines plus the International Choral Bulletin, The Choral Journal, and Spotlight on Teaching

Chorus.

Currently Dr. Hamre is serving as California Repertory and Standards Chair for the

American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Community Choirs, Choral Chair for the

California Music Educators Association, and as an advisory member of the Choral Council for

the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). She also holds membership in the

College Music Society, National Collegiate Choral Organization, Chorus America, Early Mu-

sic America, Southern California Vocal Association, Organization of American Kodály Edu-

cators, and the Fresno-Madera County Music Educators' Association. She is a member of the

citizen's advisory board for KVPR Radio Station in Fresno.

All State Chorus Background Information

The South Dakota All State Chorus members are selected locally by the choral di-

rectors in each high school. Each school is allowed to bring a predetermined num-

ber of quartets based on school’s enrollment. This year, the chorus numbers 932

singers representing 150 high schools.

Dr. Alan LaFave served as Director of Bands at Northern State University in Aberdeen from 1991-2006. He currently serves as the Dean of Fine Arts and

Professor of Music/clarinet. He graduated from Northern State University and

NSU, Dr. LaFave taught at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, Arizona State Uni-

versity, Tempe, Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, and Central High School in

Aberdeen. His formal clarinet training includes studies with Harvey Moen, James

Gai, and Robert Spring.

Dr. LaFave has performed with the Phoenix Bach Choir Orchestra, Quintessence, the Arizona Ballet Orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony, and was principal clarinet with the Arizona State University

Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, and American Serenade Band. In addition, he performed for

three consecutive Northern Plains Clarinet Symposiums, Grand Forks, ND, and the Montana/Idaho Clarinet Symposium, Missoula, MT. He is in constant demand as a soloist throughout the upper mid-

west and presented a solo performance for the 2000 International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest. Dr.

LaFave was named the 2000 South Dakota Outstanding Bandmaster of the Year by Phi Beta Mu, International Bandmasters Fraternity. In March 2002, the NSU Symphonic Band performed at the

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. In 2006, Dr. LaFave was elected to the

prestigious American Bandmasters Association and was the recipient of the Phi Beta Mu Distinguished Service Award. In 2012, he was named the NFHS Outstanding Music Educator from South Dakota.

Dr. LaFave maintains an active and vigorous schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and soloist

throughout the United States and Canada. He has served as a guest conductor, soloist, and clinician in Alaska, Arizona, Bahamas, Colorado, Iowa, Manitoba, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina,

Wesleyan University and the University of Oregon. Diane began accompanying

students at the Regional Music Contest while still in college, and has continued her work with band, orchestra and vocal students for the past 50 years. She is a

certified music teacher of piano by the Music Teachers National Association and

has been the organist at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City for 43 years. As a collaborative musician, Ketel found that practicing with students also re-

quired coaching, facilitating, encouraging and sometimes consoling. She has ac-

companied All-State Chorus 12 times, as well as visiting artists, and the American Choral Directors Association Honors Choirs.

Diane served as principal keyboard and soloist for the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra and in 2008,

received their Russell Mettler Service Award to Orchestra. She received the Distinguished Service to Music Award from the South Dakota Music Educators in 2003. Ketel has chaired the Black Hills Cham-

ber Music Society, Black Hills Area Music Teachers, and the Black Hills Chapter of American Guild of Organists.

Washington, D.C. as the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Teacher Fellowship winner from South Dakota. Hans has placed in countless fiddle contests, has judged the Minnesota State Fiddle Contest

Years of Distinguished Service to SDMEA

career has spanned all levels including Cleveland Elementary School, Patrick Henry and Axtell Park Junior High Schools, as well as Lincoln Senior High School. Every year many of her stu-

dents were selected to sing in state, regional and national honor choirs. In 2006, Lincoln High

School Choir was one of six choirs from a 10-state area chosen to perform at the North Central

Music Educators Convention.

Mrs. Hanson was also the Director of the Singing Boys of Sioux Falls for almost two decades

and developed that organization from one choir to five choirs. This choir was proclaimed by the

Mayor of Sioux Falls as “Sioux Falls Singing Ambassadors” and traveled extensively.

Mrs. Hanson holds both a BA and an MA from Augustana College in Sioux Falls and has completed extensive

post-graduate work at numerous colleges and universities. She served as the Executive Director for the South

Dakota Music Educators Association as well as various other board level positions for over forty years. She was

appointed the Senior High Repertoire and Standards Chair of the North Central American Choral Directors Asso-

ciation for four years and also acted as the SDACDA Boychoir Chair.

guished Service to Music Award in October 2005 and the SD-ACDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Mrs.

Hanson was also chosen by the Choral Director magazine, a national publication, as one of the 2006 Choral Di-

rectors of Note in the United States. In 2007 she received the SDHSAA Distinguished Service Award, as well as the Sioux Falls Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in Performing Arts in 2008.

Although retired from teaching public school music education and directing the Singing Boys of Sioux Falls, she continues serving the community. Mrs. Hanson currently serves as the Director of Music at East Side Lutheran

Church where she has directed for over 20 years. In addition she directs various festivals and mentors teachers

throughout the state. Many of her former students now teach and perform professionally throughout the world.

Mrs. Hanson is very proud of her daughter Janelle and husband, Mark Brown, and their two beautiful children,

Alexandra and Paul. She is also grateful to her late husband, Gene, for his constant support of her career as a

music educator, as well as the assistance he graciously offered her during her involvement on the SDMEA board.
