WESTBROOK BREWING CO. is located in South Carolina and their best beer is White Thai. This beer, inspired by the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine, is a twist on the classic Belgian witbier style. Instead of the traditional coriander and orange peel spicing regimen, they add fresh lemongrass, ginger root, and a dash of Sorachi Ace hops. The result is a wonderfully refreshing ale with notes of lemon candy, citrus fruit, and a slight spiciness from the ginger. White Thai is best served at 45˚F in a tulip or wine glass. 5% Acl.

TIM PIERCE GENERAL MANAGER

A LETTER FROM

Dear Members,

Saugahatchee Country Club has enjoyed a great start to 2015! We have already welcomed 25 new members by April 15th. Thursday Shrimp Nights have been a huge success! Zach’s monthly golf tournaments, in conjunction with Park Mcgehee and the Tournament committee, have all been well attended, even in the winter months of December, January, and February. Easter was the largest dining crowd we have had in the last five years, and the grass on the golf course looks as good as I have ever seen it!

We began the year with many transitional changes that we felt would better prepare us to move forward. With a lot of hard work from your Board of Directors and the various sub-committees, we developed a plan to take Saugahatchee to the next level in 2015, and we are off to a good start!

Here are a few of our accomplishments so far:

• Outstanding turnout for annual shareholder meeting. Thanks to our passionate membership!!

• Hired former Oregon State Lady Golfer Britney Stewart in the Golf Department

• Hired New Energetic Membership Director, Brittany Brockman

• Promoted Jamica Martin to Service Manager to have bigger role in service

• Streamlined Lunch & Dinner Menus for more efficiency and timely orders

• Received 99 on 03/24/15 Health Inspection! Good job kitchen staff!

• Added free weights and accessories in fitness center

• Analyze weekly revenue and labor numbers every week at managers’ meeting

• Beautifying course and surrounding areas with pine straw

• Began Capital Funding program to accumulate funds for future Capital Projects

• Building Brand with SCC logo on everything sold in Pro shop! Order yours today!

• Contracted Service Consultant to improve service and training

• Implemented new member orientation to get them quickly involved

• Installed “Suggestion” box outside GM office

• New Paint & Carpet in Downstairs Hallway & Administrative Offices

As we look forward to a great summer at Saugahatchee, a special thanks goes out to the Board of Directors, its sub-committees, and the wonderful members of Saugahatchee who donate their time and effort to making Saugahatchee the best Club in East Alabama! I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!

Members of Saugahatchee Country Club,

I hope that you have been able to get out and play golf on some of the nice days that we have had the end of March and April.

Even though May is still considered the first official first month of Turf Growing Season in our area we have been fortunate to have had some warm days and nights to jump start the growing process. It is amazing to watch how fast the course can turn green. Spring is an amazing time of year!

As much as I have harped on, looking for and repairing your ball marks on the greens, and filling your divots, I would like to finally say, Thank You! I believe that our Membership is finally taking some ownership of the course. I have actually had some people tell me, you would not believe who has starting repairing ball marks and filling divots, I never thought I would see that! It all starts by you being the one in your group to walk around looking for ball marks while others are getting ready to putt, next thing you know others in your group are doing the same thing and if you start filling divots the person riding with you will start.

We continue to have a problem with golfers driving off the cart path before the green post and leaving fairway after the green post and also pulling back off the path when they get up close to the green, Stay on the Path! Arnold understands the importance of having as many rounds played in a month as possible. The “Cart Path Only Sign” is put out a lot less than it previously was. This is another reason to observe the rules of the course. We get to ride on the fairways many days when it is probably too wet. Let’s be responsible members.

I hope you have noticed the many improvements being made to the course. New sod in some bare areas, 1400 bales of pine straw, planters at 1 and 10, chipping green re-sodded and many other items. Along with Zach we are working to find the right solution to help walkers that carry or push carts to be able to take sand with them. I actually walked and took a small bottle of sand, but it was not enough, so we are working through those issues. We need walkers to help find a way to carry sand and fill their divots.

The Club Management and Board are working very hard to make sure your experience at Saugahatchee are what you expect and what you will brag to your friends about. If you are not a golfer there are many new events that we want you to be a part of. Wine-O has been a huge success as well as Thursday night dinner specials, such as shrimp night.

See you on the course!! David Scott - Green Committee Chairman

PUTTING, CHIPPING, AND PITCHING

As the old saying goes, putt when you can, chip when you can’t putt, and pitch when you have too. This holds true, especially around our green complexes where missing in the right spot will yield a much easier up and down.

The first thought I have is to read the green as you would if you were putting. This will help you figure out the line that you will need to try and hit the ball on. The second is decide on the club to use. If there are no obstructions in front of you, then choose a club that will produce a lower shot that will run out. An example might be a putter to a nine iron. If you do have obstructions, or a short landing area, you might want to bring a little more loft and less roll into the shot. In this case you would probably use a sand wedge or lob wedge. The last is how aggressive can I be, and where do I want to leave the shot to help me make the putt. If the shot runs away from you then you will need to hit the shot soft and plan on the ball running out past the hole. If the shot is into the slope then plan on the ball stopping shorter so you can be more aggressive.

In review make sure that you are always assess-ing the topography of the green before choos-ing your shot. This will help you make a smart shot selection and give you the best chance to get up and down. If you are still having issues selecting the right club for certain shots please feel free to set up a short game lesson.
