Bannock Bake-OffSunny weather marked the annual Bannock Bake-Off which was held as part of the opening festivities for this year’s Blueberry Festival. This year was a two in a row win for the Equay-Wuk Women’s Group. Team leader Clara Carroll was happy with the result, “We won last year and we’re defending our title. It was a lot of fun, a lot of team work and we really enjoyed it.”

My heart was wrapped up in clover

Around midday last Thursday I was hustling out of the grocery store with a bag of hamburger, cauliflower, cheese, and a can of beans. I was hoping to slip quietly away to camp on a sunny afternoon with nobody noticing.

“Hi, Dick,” said my buddy Bill. “Looks like you’re trying to sneak out of town.”

I hadn’t even gotten to the parking lot yet.

Bill is 90 years old, a life-long hard worker, now retired. His big broad syrupy grin told me he knew a thing or two about an occasional round of hookey.

It was a dreamy afternoon. I devised a little irrigation system to drain our outdoor hot tub water into the garden, where the summer’s first zucchini lay bathing in the shade of a huge leaf. The tomatoes are creeping along, too, but slowly. It hasn’t been a good garden summer

so far.My afternoon swam

in the lazy pleasantness of daydreams washed down with the bottle of red wine I had opened far too early in the day. From the shade of a sun umbrella I sat and sipped, shirtless, admiring the white pine trees I have planted during the past few summers. They are still small, some not yet as tall as the weeds around them, but they are growing and I’m supposing in another 20 summers I’ll be sitting among them, in the shade, biting, sucking, and tasting tiny petals of clover.

The clover is spreading magnificently all over the property between our cabin and the lake. I don’t know how clover got there. It just showed up and started making itself at home.

Clover is among my favorite flowers. It is prominent on cans of Bag Balm, a cow

udder ointment made in Lyndonville, Vermont, only a few miles from my cherished boyhood home. Farmer Dole had cans of it sitting on every windowsill in his barn. We got our milk from Mr. Dole’s farm in those days.

Fields of clover were widespread in our part of Vermont. I remember my mother showing me how to pull each little clover petal from the flowerhead, bite it, and taste the sweetness. With some imagination I could sometimes taste the sweetness, but it didn’t really explode the taste buds like a good cold popsicle.

I found myself that afternoon, among the laze of my dreams and the haze of the wine, chewing those

little clover petals, and smiling across the lake.

Afternoon gave way to evening and I decided to stay overnight. It made me happy, and it made Rosie and Boomer happy, so I turned off my phone, just in case it didn’t make everybody happy.

I got up for a while in the night. An owl was hu-huing close by and I was counting the hu hus in hopes of identifying it. I believe it was either a Great Horned Owl or a Barred Owl. We hear these frequently, so I feel sure there will be plenty more chances.

My intention Friday was to boat home early and go to the office for a few hours. At 5:30 the day started out calm and quiet - perfect for just sitting

and watching the sun come up. I never drink tea in the morning, so I made some tea - several cups to welcome the dawn. It was so absolutely pleasant that I was still drinking tea and looking at the lake when I should have been at work.

An hour after that I called the office to say I’d be a little late, then promptly dozed off in my chair beside the lake and awoke just in time for a small lunch snack.

So, there I sat Friday afternoon after 24 hours at camp, having done nearly nothing, and it was almost time to go pick up Mary. It was the weekend! Woo hoo... time to go to camp. I could imagine wine and clover on the schedule for a couple more days.

Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act good newsTim Brody

aSSociate editor

The federal g o v e r n m e n t is planning to

make some changes to firearms licensing through the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act and is hoping other federal parties will back the act.

The implementation of this act, according to Kenora MP Greg Rickford, would enhance the rights of rural Canadians,

including farmers, hunters, and sports shooters.

Key proposals included in the Act include: • Merge the Possession Only License (POL) and Possession and Acquisition License (PAL);• Restrict the ability of Chief Firearms Officers to make arbitrary decisions;• Create a grace period at the end of the five-year license to stop people from immediately

becoming criminalized for paperwork errors;• end needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making them a condition of a license;• Require mandatory firearms safety courses for first-time gun owners; and• Strengthen firearms prohibitions for those who are convicted of domestic violence offences

Rickford shared, “I think at the end of the day as a constituent and a law abiding gun owner myself there are really two

important points. First of all, getting rid of the gun registry was appreciated but subsequent to that law abiding gun owners in this riding have been still quite loud and clear about a couple of other pieces they wanted dealt with almost on par with the registry. Specifically, collapsing the possession and acquisition and possession only licenses. That was important, and the transportation of firearms.”

He continued, “The other piece of it that I think is important is the chief firearms

officer, just narrowing that discretion, that’s actually kind of what triggered this… a decision could be made by a chief firearms officer and people’s property could be taken from them.”

Rickford concluded, “The fact that we are proposing this in the fall is great news for me personally, big news across Northern Ontario and for gun owners alike.”

A press release from Rickford on the matter states, “We are pleased our latest proposed action has already received praise from Ontario Federation of

Anglers and Hunters, Canadian Shooting Sports Organization, and wildlife federations in six provinces. We believe that owning a firearm is a right, but a right that comes with responsibilities. Our foremost priority is keeping the public safe through policies that actually work to prevent and reduce crime. That is why we are pursuing common sense firearms policies that keep Canadians safe, without needless red tape and administration for law-abiding firearms owners.”

an incredibly important opportunity. “I think in the emergency management field this is extremely important because we are a small, isolated community. We are going to rely on ourselves and each other if something happens so if we ever had an accident, train derailment, or even a terrorist situation we wouldn’t have to wait for help to come in which could take hours.”

Kim Lanauze, SLMhC Pharmacy Distribution Specialist, also took part in the training session and said, “I figured it would be a good learning experience. In healthcare you can be exposed to a

lot of different scenarios and this just helps you to be prepared.”

She described the course. “It was phenomenal. Our instructor’s knowledge was amazing. It’s just following the rules and relying on each other and our training. It’s a bit different getting into oversized suits and boots and gas masks, but an experience in itself.”

Atikokan General Hospital X-ray Technician Robert herrmann agreed the training represented an invaluable opportunity for himself, the other participants, those they will train in their own facilities, and for the safety of their

communities.“I think it’s an excellent

opportunity. Being able to conduct this in Sioux Lookout is very relevant to us because we have the same equipment and the hospital generally is similar. I think it was a really wonderful opportunity working with a diverse group of professionals… you have a wide range of knowledge which I think is important. It gives you an idea of what you would be up against in a real life situation. It was interesting but a bit daunting too. It was just a simulation, but you imagine it as being a real situation and want to get it

right. I know I’m coming back to our hospital with some very good knowledge and I really enjoyed this opportunity,” he said.

Ontario EMAT Planning Chief Marcie Beaudoin explained, “What the course does is it prepares the hospitals to deal with an event… and patients might be contaminated with one of those CBRNE particulates. If these patients present to the emergency department and get into the hospital they effectively contaminate the emergency department and shut it down. This course goes through the different types of agents

they may be faced with. We go through antidotes, treatments, signs and symptoms, and specific medications, and we make sure the hospital has a multi-disciplinary team composed of support staff, facility staff, medical staff and then all the different areas we go through things that are specific to them.”

She continued, “On the morning of the third day we get them to gather all their equipment, physically set it up and come up with a plan to receive patients from an incident and in the afternoon they go through a simulated exercise where everyone dons personal protective

equipment to protect them. They learn how to put it on, take it off without contaminating themselves, and treat patients.”

The scenario participants were given was of a train derailment with multiple cars derailing, an explosion and first responders on scene reporting an agent they were not able to identify being released in the area.

Ontario EMAT Incident Commander Patrick Auger concluded, “A lot of what we talked about were strategies for the Sioux Lookout facility and other northern facilities. I think it went very well.”

Greg Rickford serves up supper, conversation at free BBQ in Sioux Lookout

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

KENORA MP Greg Rickford fired up the

grill July 31 at the Sioux Lookout Travel Information Centre to serve hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks to his constituents.

Rickford said, “We’re (politicians) busier in the summer than arguably any other part of the year, especially now as a cabinet minister I use this opportunity to fulfill my other duties across the country, but I am very, very present and running everywhere in

the riding.“I realized in being

so busy, making a n n o u n c e m e n t s , meeting with mayors and councils, meeting with stakeholder groups that we didn’t have as much community time as I would have liked. So we have created these barbeques as a way to connect with

me unplugged. This is a tradition started a few years ago in Dryden and we’ve grown it now to do around the riding and we’ve been blessed with great weather this year and excellent turnouts. Folks really appreciate the opportunity to spend time with folks in the community and with me.”

Architecture contract for new Sioux Lookout high school awarded

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

The Keewatin-Patricia District School Board

has announced the appointment of the architecture contract for the new high school in Sioux Lookout.

Sean Monteith, Director of education, said this is big news. “It is exciting because now the project really gets moving. This Tuesday the trustees approved awarding the contract and the architectural design and oversight to a firm called Evans Bertrand hill Wheeler Architecture Inc. out of North Bay. They specialize in building

schools and hospitals in Northern Ontario and the principal architect, Ian Hill, we just spent another two hours with this morning on a conference call and he now has in his possession the actual business case and application for the new high school as well as all the parameters around partnerships and square footage and he has maps of Sioux Lookout.”

Monteith added, “I can tell you they are extremely eager to get moving, as we are, and in fact next week myself and the business superintendent will be meeting with Ian, the architect, and

we will be coming to Sioux Lookout to visit and meet your town administration to really get the planning underway.”

Thirteen architectural proposals came in for the project.

“We will now start to really assess from an architectural point of view the potential sites, which haven’t changed. We really needed the architect to be part of that. He is absolutely looking to put the needs of kids first in the design of this new school,” Monteith said.

Bob O’Donohue, Sioux Lookout area Trustee, said, “I’m

extremely pleased that the process has begun for our new secondary school in Sioux Lookout and I am eagerly looking forward to our next steps.”

Ian Hill, Principal Architect of Evens Bertrand hill Wheeler Inc., commented “Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture is extremely pleased to have been selected as the architectural firm for the new secondary school in Sioux Lookout. We have been fortunate to have provided school designs throughout all of Northern Ontario for over 40 years at a time when the school program, teaching

methods, and a better understanding of students’ needs have quickly evolved. We are very excited to begin and on behalf of our firm I thank the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board for the opportunity to be a part of the education vision for Sioux Lookout and the surrounding communities.”

Monteith said the plan is still to get shovels in the ground next spring. “What we are looking for is site selection very early in the fall and then the architect to start to design. The architect will also be part of a consultation process for key

stakeholders, primarily students and staff, as well as partners in the project. Once we do that we will start to begin looking at contracting out the work to a general contractor as well as to sub-contractors.”

Monteith concluded, “With the approval of Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture as the architects for the new high school in Sioux Lookout, our dream of providing a new beginning for our students and their futures has become reality. A new era has begun, and with it, the aspirations of so many. The KPDSB is beaming with pride.”

Meeting held in Sioux Lookout to discuss tourism employment strategy

Geoff ShieldsStaff Writer

TO u R I S M N o r t h e r n Ontario (RTO

13) conducted a meeting in Sioux Lookout last Wednesday morning as part of a series of community sessions they held over the week to learn more about the challenges that are facing the tourist industry and to tackle employee concerns.

Brad Jones, c o m m u n i c a t i o n s coordinator for the organization,

commented, “Karen Jones (Karen Jones Consulting) and Marla Tremblay (Markey Consulting), are presently assessing current labour market trends on behalf of Tourism Northern Ontario. The intention is to develop strategies to ensure that the industry has access to a qualified labour pool.

“They are nearing completion of a report for Northeastern Ontario and currently engaging tourism stakeholders in the Algoma and

Northwest tourism regions.

“Tourism is the largest single employer of youth in Ontario and every $1 million of tourism revenues generates 14 full-time positions with an annual payroll of more than $500,000.”

he concluded, “Tourism Northern Ontario is an industry-led entity funded through an agreement with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport with the mandate to increase tourism opportunities

within the region by concentrating on tourism product d e v e l o p m e n t , workforce and

industry training, investment attraction, and marketing. TNO is the largest of Ontario’s

tourism regions geographically, the only region with sub-regions and second in terms of expenditure.”

John Chisel’s Kawasaki Disease Awareness JourneyTim Brody

aSSociate editor

The community of Lac Seul First Nation has rallied

around a young boy and his family as he seeks to raise awareness of a disease that will impact him for the rest of his life.

Seven-year-old John Chisel was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease at six months of age.

his mother Nora Chisel explained that John got sick with flu-like symptoms, constant fever, bloodshot eyes, and a red rash on his bottom.

Doctors in Sioux Lookout consulted with a specialist in Winnipeg and John was medivacked there.

While receiving treatment Nora Chisel was given the news her son had been diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease and worse he had sustained heart damage.

John had a re-occurrence of the same symptoms when he was three.

The two bouts with the disease left John with four aneurysms in his heart.

he must now take medication for the rest of his life.

Nora Chisel said it is hard seeing her son want

to run and play with other children, however due to the damage the disease did to his heart, that is something he will never be able to do.

Nora Chisel said John has some idea of what the disease did to him, but being a child, he does not yet fully grasp the lifelong implications of the weakened heart.

While John was receiving treatment in Winnipeg, he and his mother stayed with Harold Chisel (the boy’s uncle) and his partner Catriona Dooley.

harold Chisel said he got to know John quite well and wanted to do something to help him out. He had planned to participate in the Manitoba Marathon and came up with the idea of running for his nephew, thus John Chisel’s Kawasaki Disease Awareness Journey began.

harold Chisel, along with John, his sister Nora, and several members of John’s family ran or walked in the marathon wearing matching t-shirts with hearts at their centre and John Chisel’s Kawasaki Disease Awareness Journey printed across them.

The heart at the

centre is meant to show everyone’s love for John as well as illustrate the damage the disease has done to John’s heart.

Nora Chisel said she does not want any other parents to have to go through what she and her family have gone through with John so the show of love for John turned into a Kawasaki Disease awareness campaign.

In addition, an outpouring of support from the community through a bridge toll, the Obishikokaang Elementary School bake sale, the Manitoba Marathon events, along with support from Lac Seul First Nation and Ke-nawind housing combined to raise $2776.79 in John’s name

which will be donated to the SickKids Foundation in Toronto.

The money will then be directed to the Dr. R. Yeung’s Kawasaki Disease Research-Rheumatology fund.

Nora Chisel said it has been wonderful the way the community has rallied around her son.

Nora Chisel, John and the members of the John Chisel’s Kawasaki Disease Awareness Journey team thanked the community recently by hosting a free BBQ in Frenchman’s Head.

Floyd Vincent, a band councillor for Frenchman’s head in Lac Seul, who is also John’s grandfather said Lac Seul’s Chief and Council were proud to be able to support John’s awareness journey.

John’s grandmother Nora Vincent said, “I’m so happy that everyone is supporting us.”

She added, “It has been hard for me. I’ve been there since day one. When John got sick I drove them to the hospital every day. My husband drove us to Winnipeg when he got medivacked and I stayed in the hospital with Nora and helped her look after John and was there for both of them. Every trip he has taken to Winnipeg I’ve been there. It was like a nightmare not knowing what was wrong with him.”

harold Chisel said of the support his nephew has received, “It makes me proud of my community to see all these people helping John.”

John walked in the marathon with his mother and several other members of his family.

he said it felt good to participate and raise awareness about the disease which has so adversely affected his life.

he also said it was nice to see family and friends all wearing special shirts to support him.

John has spoken to his classmates about Kawasaki Disease and what it did to his heart.

According to information distributed by Kawasaki Disease Canada Kawasaki Disease (KD) is an illness that primarily affects young children. It is characterized by an inflammation of the blood vessels throughout the body.

About 75 percent of patients are under five years old, but it can affect older children, babies and teenagers, as well.

KD is more common in boys than girls, and the majority of cases are diagnosed in the winter and early spring. It is not

contagious. KD gets its name from

Tomisaku Kawasaki, a Japanese physician who first described the illness in medical literature in 1967. In the united States, KD affects people in all racial and ethnic groups, although it is more prevalent among Americans of Asian and Pacific Island descent. About 4200 children there are diagnosed with KD each year.

Although the vast majority of patients who receive timely treatment recover completely, a small percentage develop heart problems.

KD can cause abnormal changes in the coronary arteries and other areas of the heart. The most serious health threat is an aneurysm, which is a ballooning of the blood vessel wall. That’s why the right diagnosis and timely treatment are so important.

KD is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children.

People can stay up to date on what is happening with John and his awareness and fundraising efforts through John Chisel’s Kawasaki Disease Awareness Journey page on Facebook.

to host it.“Initially I thought

just the task for such a big event was overwhelming, but once we started meeting with AFFS and throwing ideas back and forth and just talking about the youth and how it would benefit them, I am looking forward to it and I am excited about it. The majority of youth will be camping on site. It’s for youth and we are looking forward to the visitors coming in and sharing our native cultural traditions.”

For Chief Bull, being asked to co-host the event was of special significance. “The community of Lac Seul is very honored to host the annual Anishinaabe Abinoojii Family Services cultural event. We are very sure the youth are going to enjoy the activities that have been planned,” he said.

A large number of tents had been set up the previous evening as many people had arrived early for a supper and pre-opening meet ‘n greet followed by a youth dance which included musical chairs and spot dances.

In the morning the event officially opened at 6 o’clock with a sunrise ceremony consisting of five traditional Lac Seul drummers assisted by Elder Juliette Blackhawk. Songs were sung to honor the Creator with some early risers in attendance, followed by breakfast.

At 9 a.m. Lac Seul Band Council Members Chief Clifford Bull, Elder Andy Lac Seul, Rena Foster from the Youth Council, along with AFFS Executive Director Theresa Stevens; Chair, Howard Copenance; Vice Chair Maria Swain; and Gord Halverson, invited Elders and local community members gathered in the Circle.

The AFFS drum group opened the proceedings with a traditional song which was made noticeable by an eagle which flew over the group as they were singing, after which the Lac Seul drum group sang a song of welcome.

Following this, Master of Ceremonies Chris Southwind warmed up the crowd with his witty repartee then introduced the first speaker Chief Bull who, as did all the speakers who followed him, opened his welcome speech by speaking in Ojibway then translating into English.

“Booshoo (Welcome). I just want to say a thank you to everyone who has come to Lac Seul First Nation Territory Obishikokaang. I want to say thank you for coming to visit for three days, sharing with us laughter, fun stories, and I acknowledge the Creator for giving us such a beautiful day and the next days to come. I think they are going to be very sunny. I want to acknowledge the drums that are here this morning, the sacred items, the songs that are sung. I acknowledge the elders, men and women, also acknowledge the volunteers that are here

who are going to make this a very successful event and all the organizers.

“To Theresa I say Miigwetch for allowing Lac Seul to host this event this year. Have fun and enjoy your visit. Miigwetch.”

Elder Andy Lac Seul was next. “Booshoo. I want to welcome all the children and all the youth and elders and people who are our support and who have come to this gathering of youth for the next three days. Miigwetch.”

Rena Foster from the Lac Seul Youth Council said, “On behalf of the youth council I would like to welcome you. Enjoy your stay here. For all the people involved, as a fellow youth I know you will benefit a lot from the various cultural activities and the experience and knowledge that you will obtain during your time spent with us. On behalf of both Chief and

Council, I would like to thank the organizers for giving us the opportunity to host this unique event.

“You will be participating in many events. Have fun and enjoy the next three days. Make friends and enjoy your stay at Obishikokaang.”

Stevens, Copenance, Swain and Halverson from AFFS, in turn, thanked everyone for coming.

Copenance made particular reference to the importance of retaining one’s Anishinaabe name.

The ceremony concluded with Traditional healer Tom Chisel who told the Creation Story followed by Spiritual Advisor Mervin Ningewance who spoke about the history of Lac Seul First Nation.

A song from the host drummers concluded the official proceedings.

Afterward the individual members from AFFS spoke about the event. Stevens

commented, “It looks to me like a very well organized event. A lot of planning went into this. It’s a beautiful location. We brought 10 Elders from 14 First Nations, Northern Treaty Three. It is a good start.”

Swain added, “It’s always been the way of our people, getting together, gathering to share knowledge, teachings and teaching the kinds of life skills and ceremonies. My dad often talks about how he grew up with gatherings like this and it’s something that has been passed on from generation to generation and I am very happy that we are hosting cultural camps. It also de-stigmatizes the history of the child welfare system, that we can teach our children the cultural knowledge and activities and it’s good to have it in different locations every year by different communities. It’s good to rotate them, so that they

can share their history.” She concluded, “I like the atmosphere of the lake, the air, and just being out on the land and the kids get to run around free.”

Copenance, ha-Q u e - e h - P i n a c e (Loud Thunderbird), shared, “For me, it’s regenerating the youth to their identity, their culture, their gift as Anishinaabe people through the teachings of the elders which in turn they have learned from their elders. There are many things that we need to regain and keep strong for our future generations. Teachers are here and it’s a matter of strengthening, learning them, and being proud of it as a people.”

He continued, “Many things have been put aside due to outside influences. The history of our people has so many teachings and gifts that have been put on the side and to

bring forth examples, ways of life, our names, because nowadays we carry names that have been brought to us by outside influences. Our youth need to know about Creation and history of who they are. The camps are the gatherings in an appropriate setting reflecting on how our people used to gather as they travelled through the land.

“I think the people through other gatherings, share about the travels of the people of long ago, therefore they bring back that history and teaching of when they would gather in certain areas. I would like to say Miigwetch to the community of Obishikokaang (Lac Seul).”

With the conclusion of the official opening all those involved as workers and volunteers adjourned to one of the three large tents erected on the site where registrations took place.

Approximately 200 young people from Lac Seul and many other Treaty Three reserves that included Fort hope,

Shoal Lake, Wabigoon, Rat Portage, and Grassy Narrows attended. Each was given a name tag, backpack, and a white T-shirt with a picture of a feather and the lettering LSFN & AAFS Annual Cultural Camp on it.

It was then time to partake in lunch served by volunteers with participants taking the opportunity to eat in the dining tent and at tables overlooking the lake.

Following lunch all the participants lined up and introduced themselves by name and where they were from.

It was then time to start the first of the workshops. Designed to cover traditional crafts and teachings the workshops included activities such as painting, stone carving, beading, powwow basics, bannock making lessons, mini drum making, traditional women’s and men’s teachings, medicine wheel teachings, storytelling, keepsake boxes, canoe safety.

There was a fish net demonstration with fish that were caught overnight served the next day during a fish fillet

demonstration, moose meat set up on a rack, and a demonstration on how to smoke it.

Nathan Mishibinijima from Nishnawbe- Gamik Friendship Centre conducted a workshop in making bows and arrows. He also brought an atlatl set which is similar to the woomeras used by the Australian Aboriginines.

he commented on the project. “I wasn’t able to bring any children’s bows, only adult ones, however some of the children tried them out and a lot of them really liked them.

“The atlatl were received well. Many tried them and some had difficulty but overall they really participated in the activity.”

The morning of the final day was set aside for a medicine walk conducted by Chisel who, along many other community artists and teachers such as Blackhawk, Ralph Johnson, Don Ningewance, Felix Noel, Jesse Terry, Scott Angeconeb, Mervin Ningewance and Nora Angeconeb, gave their time and dedication to

ensure that the camp ran smoothly.

Johnson shared, “I think it’s a real positive step for First Nations to take the initiative in organizing an avenue for youth where they can learn about their history and culture and it’s the Aboriginal people, the elders, that are doing the teaching and it’s important that they depend on learning some of the customs and they have fun in the process while they are learning and the atmosphere setting in the original powwow ground, which has always been a place for learning, makes it an ideal place to do this. It is good to see the whole community coming out to support this and I am impressed by the number of people that have come from the surrounding areas,” he said.

One of those visitors was Crystal Swain from Grassy Narrows, a youth re-integration worker with Grand Council, Treaty Three.

She explained what motivated her to come to the camp. “I had someone email a poster to me and had a look at

the agenda and found it to be very, very culturally relevant in terms of learning.

“I brought four kids from Grassy Narrows and I feel it’s an excellent learning opportunity. I am impressed by the way Lac Seul has organized and planned the cultural activities and the thing that drew my attention is that they are doing a lot of history about Anishinaabe history, medicine wheel teaching, and a lot of the practical activities like moose meat smoking, studying fish nets, and then getting the opportunity to clean and prepare all of it ready for us to eat.”

She concluded, “One of the major reasons we came was to learn the history of the relations between Lac Seul and Grassy Narrows. It’s been good and they took very good care of us by demonstrating real kindness and friendliness.”

For the young people it was an adventure. Shylo Petiquan from Wabauskang First Nation said, “I just came to see

the culture camp, to meet new people, and to learn new things and hopefully have a good time.”

Jade Trout from Lac Seul came for “my culture and to have fun.”

For Anthony Pember from Lac Seul it was “to meet new friends, to have fun, and learn.”

For recreation between and after workshops, bouncy castles, waterslides, and sumo wrestler outfits were set up for the kids to enjoy.

On Wednesday evening a youth dance was held, hosted by DJ Slipper-E, with the final evening consisting of a pig roast followed by a mini powwow and give away, and concluding with the closing ceremony with speeches from Lawson, Foster, Stevens, Howard and Swain.

The ceremony finished with a final travel song to wish people a safe return to their destinations and on the following morning a pancake breakfast was served. There participants said their farewells to old and new friends before setting out on their journeys back home.

*Black and White - To run (twice) in the Sioux Lookout Bulletin on Wednesday July 23 & Wednesday August 6, 2014.

All bus routes have changed for this school year! This means your bus number, animal name, time and location of stop may have changed!

√ Every bus student will receive a letter over the summer with their new transportation arrangements.

√ Students/siblings in the same household with different last names may receive individual letters. We apologize

and will try to minimize this as much as possible.

√ If you don’t receive a letter by August 5th and believe you should be registered to a bus, please contact our

office as soon as possible.

In the Sioux Lookout area, ridership is increasing. The Consortium could add an additional bus at an approximate cost of $75,000/year or take a fresh look at the

system and determine if the existing buses can work more efficiently. Iron Range Bus Lines and the Consortium have the additional challenge of recruiting drivers in Sioux Lookout. Normally every year, a geographic area is reviewed and re-organized within the Consortium service area. Last year we reviewed Kenora and all 30 bus routes changed. Managing the routing system efficiently and cost effectively while maintaining safety, is the responsible thing to do with your tax dollars. Every dollar properly managed in transportation means potential additional dollars available to the classroom.

Time to register for Bearskin Airlines Skip to Equip Classic in Sioux Lookout

Tim BrodyaSSociate editor

WO M e N from Sioux L o o k o u t

and across the region are being encouraged to mark November 7, 8 and 9 on their calendars for a weekend of curling.

Planning is underway for this year’s Bearskin Airlines Skip to equip Classic which will take place at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club and is open to the first 32 teams to register.

In partnership with the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win health Centre Foundation, the three previous Skip to equip women’s curling events have raised more than $160,000 for the purchase of diagnostic imaging equipment for the health centre. Funds have supported year round mammography services and the purchase of a third ultrasound machine.

According to the event’s organizing committee, funds

raised from this year’s Skip to Equip will help increase the number of long term care beds that are needed by people living in this area.

Teams are encouraged to collect pledges to participate in the weekend of curling and socializing. The event will include draws, raffles and entertainment.

A press release issued by the Skip to equip organizing committee states, “Women with all levels of curling expe r i ence a re encouraged to participate on a team. Teams will be pooled according to skill level to keep the experience fun for everyone. Just like last year, this year’s Skip to Equip is sure to be a great time for all who take part. Get your team together now. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled girls’ weekend, while supporting an important cause.”

Teams interested

in registering for this year’s Skip to equip or who are

interested in getting more information on the event are asked

to contact Muriel Anderson at 807-737-8982 or email the

organizing committee at [email protected].

Graham Sissons

With us not so very long.

It was time, patiently you waited

at the gate. Then like a

gentle breeze you were gone.

Possessing of numerous

qualities, Possibly some you had

to contemplate

God’s place for you was to leave,

you see

Large footprints in the sand!

A beacon to those you loved,

family, friends, neighbours, co-

workers. Just follow my tracks,

they are easy to find

A simple message to those

tracking behind.

Ah yes! We understand Graham

Be the best Grandfather, Dad,

Friend

Help as many as you can

Compassionate, loving, caring,

kind, helpful right to the end.

Oh those footprints in the sand!

I, we & of course those four-

legged pals will miss you our

friend.

We celebrate your life

the man you were

Now off on another wonderous

journey you travel

No need to struggle, not hard to

find, just follow my unfinished

Footprints in the sand!
