Aboriginal Healing Foundation presents new reportGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

WHILE many C a n a d i a n s are aware of

the abuse suffered by First Nations children by those into whose care they were entrusted under the residential school system, not many are aware that another form of abuse in those institutions existed.

A new report, recently published by the Aboriginal Healing Foundation entitled Origins of Lateral Violence In Aboriginal Communities, sheds new light on the suffering of youngsters which took the form of student-to-student abuse which has had a lasting effect on the victims and their descendants.

To launch the publication, a ceremony was held at the Nishnawbe - Gamik Friendship Centre July 3.The day started with a sunrise ceremony at the Sacred Site at Pelican

Falls First Nations High School which is built on the spot where the Pelican Falls Residential School once stood.

Elders and teachers Fred Thomas, Mervin Ningewance, Juliette Blackhawk, and healers Tom Chisel and Ralph Johnson held a ceremonial circle and sang traditional healing songs.

“At sunrise, everyone in the circle spoke about

their reflections of the day and their feelings on how on the same land where they were at school they are now holding ceremonies, happenings, and healing and how positive that is,” explained Brenda Dovick, Executive Director of the Friendship Centre, one of the 25 participants.

At 9:30 a.m. 49 people that included Elders, spiritual leaders,

residential school survivors, members of local organizations, and individual community members gathered in the main hall of the Friendship Centre to attend the book launching, which was conducted by Garnet Angeconeb , an

active member of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation board of directors since 1998 and currently serving as its secretary, Mike DeGagne, former Executive Director of the Foundation and now President of Nipissing University, and

Amy Bombay, former research consultant with the Foundation and currently Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, all of whom were instrumental in putting the report together.

Also in attendance was special guest Deputy

Garnet Angeconeb,“This is very much about healing.”

Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler from Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN).

The presentation commenced with an opening prayer by the Mino-taugosiwaq dqway wag de we igunesiwag

(beautiful sounding women hand drums) women’s hand drum group who sang two healing songs.

Angeconeb then gave a speech of welcome. “It’s a really beautiful day and we had a beautiful sunrise ceremony. What a blessing. It was very spiritual and we knew the time was right to do this. I would like to thank everyone for coming.”

Angeconeb introduced DeGagne who explained how the report was put together and then introduced Sarah Friar, who over the last two years managed the interviews that were conducted with residential school survivors before they were put on video,

and Bombay who was author of the residential document.

He then went on to talk about the issue of students in residential schools hurting each other with the comment, “We are shining a light on the fact that we know that student-on-student abuse did happen. This study is about where that comes from, why it occurred, and how it affects our community now.”

Bombay took the floor and, with the aid of slides, explained chapter by chapter how the book was compiled.

At the end of the presentation, questions were invited, resulting in Elders Ningewance and Thomas both getting up and telling amusing tales of their residential school days.

Angeconeb closed the presentation.

Following this, approximately 34 people adjourned to Centennial Park around the Grandfather Rocks

where Ningewance and Chisel conducted a Blessing Ceremony where healing prayers were said.

Chisel related how special the documents are. “We have to respect the stories set out in the book. I give thanks to those people who came forward to relate their stories. We are sitting here with the Grandfathers and we are asking them for guidance…Meegwetch.”

The day concluded with a traditional feast of moose meat and bannock at the Friendship Centre.

Afterward DeGagne shared, “The report focuses and is intended for our own community and the study is a preliminary, to get this dialogue starting among ourselves and our own community. There hasn’t been a serious look at student-on-student abuse, so this is the first of its kind.”

He added, “Forgiveness means giving up hope that you can change or

make the past better. I think that part of that stage is where both victims and perpetrators should acknowledge and forgive.”

Bombay commented, “I was really happy to see the positive response we got, especially after the presentation when members of the audience shared their stories of student abuse and lateral violence. That showed me that this is an important issue that communities are becoming ready to address.”

Deputy Grand Chief Fiddler was happy with the result.

“I think it is really good for us to have

this conversation about student abuse. It’s something that needs to be talked about. In some ways it is unfortunate we are having this conversation, as both the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission are winding down. However, I think what will help address this issue is the work that they have been able to do in the course of their mandate. It will help families and communities address this very critical issue of student-on-student abuse.”

He concluded, “We have our Creator and we have the work that the Foundation has done

that will help us with our young. I’m grateful to the Creator and Garnet for inviting me.”

For Angeconeb, it was a powerful ceremony. “The words spoken were very meaningful. The report is very heavy in its content, but as we journey together the healing will become lighter and we need to promote understanding of the deep and complex issue when we talk about student-to-student abuse. This is very much about healing in the deepest sense.”

DeGagne summed up, “As always with Sioux Lookout, it was well attended and well received and, as Garnet said, it’s good medicine.”

Summertime reading is magic!

The Sioux Lookout Public Library kicked off their 2014 TD Summer Reading Club on July 2 with two magnificent and

zany performances from Thunder Bay magician, Martin Wonderland. Three groups from the Municipal Daycare Centres and dozens of local children trouped down to the library

to catch either a 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. performance, both of which were well attended. Martin Wonderland tailored his visit for the library by incorporating tricks about books and getting children excited about this year’s theme for the reading club: Eureka!

Children 12 and under are encouraged to sign-up for the program,

which runs from July 2 to August 27. The focus this summer will be on creation, invention, and discovery. Everyone who registers receives a free activity booklet, entry into a contest for prizes, and younger children earn stickers for reporting on the books they’ve read. Please visit the library to register and visit the library’s website (slpl.

on.ca) for a full description of the program. If you have any questions please contact Mike Laverty, Ass i s tan t /Chi ldren’s Librarian, at 737-3660 (ext 4403) or mlaverty@ siouxlookout.ca.

Mary ducked behind my patio planter of lettuce to grab some pictures of me in the hot tub. It appears that I was thinking deep thoughts, or else daydreaming.

Sunday morning as I clipped some lettuce for a salad I was reminded of an old childhood riddle. “What’s worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm?” (Biting into an apple and finding half a worm... ha,

ha, ha.)Displaying my

Sunday clever as I snipped, I turned slyly to Mary, who was sitting at the lakeside bar innocently reading a book, and chuckled (snip, snip), “Hey, Mary. What’s worse than clipping some lettuce and finding a tent caterpillar in one of the leaves?”

She, of course, guessed the right answer almost immediately and chortled and laughed

in what I recognized as her attempt to humor me, by faking hysterical delight. She knew the old man didn’t fly past the threshold of mediocrity with that one.

Continuing the showdown of wits, she waited ‘til I was halfway through eating my salad before inquiring quietly, “Did you wash that lettuce before you started eating?”

She knew the answer to that, as she had watched me clip it

straight into the bowl.“There’s caterpillar

poop all over everything, you know,” she gently chided.

Not to be outdone I assured her I had drenched everything with blue cheese dressing and wouldn’t know the difference.

And to stay ahead of the game, I marched into the kitchen, clutched a handful of raisins, came back and threw them into my remaining salad and mixed them all around,

coating with the blue cheese and hiding like Easter eggs among the lettuce leaves.

It was plain to see she had a question, but I took the lead without her even asking. “In case the rabbits have been in the garden, too.”

Mary went back to her book.

I finished my salad.I think that being

an organic vegetarian must be harder than being a Lutheran in a Catholic village.

Sioux Lookout Firefighters honoured for long time serviceTim Brody

AssociAte editor

SEVERAL Sioux Lookout firefighters were recently

recognized by the provincial and federal governments for long service in the community.

Federal fire service medals for 20 years of service with the Sioux Lookout Volunteer Fire Department were presented to Al Howie, Rob Smetana and Randy Henrickson.

Darrell Morgan received a 25 year

provincial long service award.

Dennis Leney received a 35 year provincial long service award.

Fire Chief Rob Favot, and last year Gord Maki, were recognized by both the federal and provincial governments for 40 years of firefighting service to the community.

Darrell Morgan said it was an honour to be recognized.

He added, “It’s a lot of fun. A great group of guys.”

Dennis Leney stated, “It’s appreciated. We’re volunteers who are firefighters to serve the community and to be honoured is great… it feels like I just got my 25 years and to receive this, I thought, wow, 35 years already? It’s a really good organization to be a member of.”

Favot, who has been fire chief for the past 12 years, said it’s hard to believe he has served the community as a firefighter for 40 years.

“Forty years ago we didn’t have the equipment we have today. Firefighting has come a long way with

better equipment and training. It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years. It’s been very

rewarding to give back to the community,” he said.

Commenting on his firefighters being recognized, he said, “It’s always nice for the provincial and federal government to recognize the time these guys have put in over the years… These guys have jobs, families, yet they still find time to give back to the community through the fire department.”

Hall 1 in Sioux Lookout has 25 firefighters.

Hall 2 in Hudson has 12 firefighters.

At Hall 1 in Sioux Lookout 13 firefighters have 10 or more years of experience with another three sitting at nine. Only six firefighters have less than five years of service under their belts.

“We’re a very experienced department,” Favot said. “We’re very fortunate that we are able to retain firefighters year after year. Other communities are struggling to have enough firefighters and here we are with a lot of members who have put in many years of service.”

He continued, “I was still on the phone with the OPP who were asking me how aggressive is it, a million questions. I told them it could get aggressive at any time. I’ve been bear hunting for years and I know you can’t tell what a bear is going to do. I told them to please get an officer there. I saw it bolt across Seventh Avenue. I saw Jimmy Berze and he was out pruning lilacs and Jack Roy was getting in his car. I told Jimmy a bear was in the area. I backed out and saw an OPP officer at the corner. I stopped her and told her the bear is by the water tower. She disappeared, probably went around the block.”

“I just had a sense I should go back so I did and talked to Jimmy

again and asked him if he had seen the bear. We were looking and saw it and saw it had something in its mouth. It was a human. I left the truck running and ran toward it. I was about 15 feet from the bear. Jack and Jimmy were behind me. I started yelling and Jimmy and Jack were yelling. I was on the phone with 911 and yelling and throwing rocks at the bear. Then I started to hear the sirens. I hit the bear twice, once in the face and once in the side and it took off. I then did First Aid on the fellow. He was in a daze. Didn’t know what was going on, what time of day it was. He didn’t even know where he was… I took off my shirt to bandage him with. When the OPP got there I told them to get out their pistols because I

thought he would come back.”

Goulet described, “He had him by the arm. His arm from fingertips to elbow was chewed up. That’s where he was carrying him from. His side was bloody from his arm. I checked him out and his lower abdomen was scratched, it looked like from the bear’s paw. I figure the bear was about 300 pounds… If we hadn’t have been there he would have been dead.”

Guardian angel number two, James Berze, next recounted his story.

“My sister Gail and myself were outside of my mother Lorraine’s cutting down some lilac bushes and Yvon came up. I didn’t know his name at the time. He asked us if we had seen a bear and we

said, no, we hadn’t seen anything. He left and we decided to take a walk up behind Jack’s in the bush there and we didn’t see anything so we came back down and went back to cutting down bushes.

“Maybe 15 minutes later Yvon came back up and asked us if we were sure we hadn’t seen anything. He said he has to be up there in the bush. I told him we

had been up there and hadn’t seen anything. Yvon left his vehicle on the road and I said let’s take a walk up there. As we were walking up Yvon spotted the bear on the trail and we both saw him pulling what looked like a body. I remember seeing shoes bouncing off the ground. We then ran up to the bush. We got pretty close to the bear and when he heard us coming he turned and

looked and seemed to be clinching the body low down with his mouth and his claws under the arm. We started throwing rocks and Yvon started screaming and yelling and I started yelling and Jack had come up and then of course my sister showed up. After we had thrown some rocks the bear backed up a little and he didn’t look scared or anything. We pitched

a few more rocks and then he took off.”

Berze further shared, “As we were going up into the bush we still weren’t sure if it was a body and sure enough there was this young man lying on the ground and we started yelling at him to see if he was okay and there was no response. That didn’t have us thinking anything good. We tried to get close to him while watching for the bear and then we yelled at him really loud and he responded to us so we knew he was okay. Meanwhile we were trying to scout for the bear. Yvon said he had First Aid and so he

went over to the fellow and took his shirt off and wrapped his hand up because it was all bloody and we checked him over. My sister (a nurse) came up with rubber gloves on and we assessed him. A lot of people called 911.”

“It was a large bear. Probably one of the largest bush bears I’ve seen,” Berze said. “I used to work at the landfill and I’ve seen a lot of huge landfill bears but this was nothing like that. There was no fat on it. It was all muscle. It was a couple hundred pounds for sure, 250 pounds I bet.

It was pulling him like nothing… I said to Yvon,

I went up and talked to him later, if he wasn’t persistent trying to figure out where the bear went he would be dead. If he hadn’t come back the second time, and we only got a glimpse of about three seconds, he would have been dragged in the bush and God knows what would have happened to him.”

Finally comes the tale of guardian angel number three, Jack Roy.

“I was just leaving the yard in my car when a truck drove in the laneway off of Seventh and he stopped to chat at my neighbours. I was waiting for him to turn in the driveway or leave when my neighbour’s

son walked up and said this fellow had followed a bear across town in his truck to see where he was going and he followed him right over to this area. Jim told me there was a bear around. We were waiting for it to come out when all of a sudden the guy jumped out of his truck and started running up the laneway toward a trail that goes up to the water tank. From his angle he could see the bear. It was in behind some tall grass and trees. He said something about it having a body in its mouth so I jumped out of the car and when I stood up I could see the bear was carrying a guy in its mouth so the

three of us ran up there and we started throwing rocks to stop it or get him to drop the guy. He ended up dropping the guy and just stood there looking at us so we kept on pelting him with rocks and then he left into the bush and left the guy lying there. He had him in his mouth. The guy was just flopping around in his mouth. He was comatose. He wasn’t awake at all. Standing there when the ambulance arrived and they revived him he was asked if he knew what happened to him and he said no, he had no idea.”

Roy added, “I’m sure the bear just stumbled across him. It didn’t hunt

him down or anything… It just seems in the last couple of years we’ve had more and more of them coming into town, probably looking for food.”

He too praised Goulet for not letting the matter drop. “Yvon, if it hadn’t been for him following that bear I would have just driven out the driveway and Jimmy would have continued trimming his mother’s lilacs and we never would have noticed the bear at all. That guy is just lucky Yvon was following that bear across town to see that nothing happened… It was a large bear. It was no effort for the bear to pick him up and carry him around and swing him around like a rag doll.”

The victim was taken to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre and treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

Sioux Lookout OPP Sergeant Kevin Young said police have received a steady stream of calls about bears so far this year, but no more than any other year.

He said most of the reports have been about bears getting into garbage and bird feeders.

Young reminds the public that if a bear is being a nuisance, they should call the Ministry of Natural Resources Nuisance Bear hotline at 1-866-514-2327.

He added, “Of course call us if it is life threatening or there is damage being done to property.”

For issues of public safety, police can be contacted at 1-888-310-1122.

Young reports that officers looked for the bear unsuccessfully that evening.

However the following evening at about 6:30 OPP officers shot a bear on Seventh Avenue.

Young said the bear was eating garbage in a resident’s backyard. Officers tried to scare the bear away. At first it didn’t leave. It then left, but came back shortly afterward. Officers then made the decision to shoot the animal.

Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) advise people to take precautions to prevent attracting bears while outdoors and not to approach or attempt to interact with bears.

The MNR provides the following fact sheet on their website explaining who to contact about encounters with black bears.

Emergency SituationsCall 911 if a black

bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour,

such as:• Entering a school

yard when school is in session

• Stalking people and is lingering at the site

• Entering or trying to enter a residence

• Wandering into a public gathering

• Killing livestock/pets and is lingering at the sitePolice are the first

responder for any emergency situation. At the request of police, MNR will respond to emergency situations to assist.

Non-Emergency Encounters

Call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY 705-945-7641) if a black bear is:• Roaming around,

checking garbage cans• Breaking into a shed

where garbage or food

is stored• In a tree• Pulling down a bird

feeder or knocking over a barbecue

• Moving through a backyard or field but is not lingeringThis line operates 24

hours a day, seven days a week from April 1 until Nov. 30. Trained staff can provide advice about black bear behaviour, how to avoid human-bear conflicts, and how to remove attractants from property.

Reducing the Chances of an Encounter

Even if they’re not causing a threat to public safety, black bears should be discouraged from staying in populated areas.

People can take steps on their property and in their neighbourhood to avoid attracting black bears into populated

areas. Visit ontario.ca/bearwise for tips and to learn about bears.

The Ministry of Natural Resources would like to thank the many people who are already eliminating attractants. It takes only one property

where attractants are not managed carefully to draw bears to a neighbourhood. Everyone must work together to keep black bears in the wild where they belong.

The Bear Wise

Program provides advice to municipalities, the public, and other stakeholders about what they can do to keep black bears away from urban and semi-urban areas and how to manage problem bears.

Sioux Lookout Public Library evolving with the times, while staying true to its roots

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

AS times change, so too does the Sioux Lookout

Public Library.The library received

two grants this spring to help it continue to meet the needs of its patrons, according to Assistant/Children’s Librarian Mike Laverty.

“We received two grants. One from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and one from the Government of Ontario. They are similar in nature. They complement each other,” he stated.

“The Trillium grant is a community grant and that one is to re-vamp our

computer room which we are going to rename the community media room. It will be a significant upgrade in technology. We bought new computers, new tables, new chairs. We are installing a ceiling mounted projector, and we bought a massive screen for in there and are hoping to have movie nights. We’re trying to re-imagine the space as a multi-purpose classroom, training space, place for events. We bought some technology so that someone could film an event there and live-stream it over the Internet.”

The grant from the Ontario government is being used to set up a download station for

downloading e-books and finding things on-line, while a research station for students will assist them in accessing information with the help of online databases.

The library is also offering two free training programs.

The first is an introduction to computers for people with no experience using them. The course will familiarize people with how to use computers and do such things as set up an email account and search the Internet and use Skype.

The second course will be dedicated to covering the programs of Microsoft Office.

“These are just the beginning of the courses we want to offer and we would like to find out from the community what types of courses people would like us to offer, what is the demand out there,” Laverty said.

The library is also offering free Wi-Fi to visitors.

“We’re trying to give people access to technology, especially those that can’t afford it…Libraries are being transformed. There is a perception from people that everything is on-line and libraries may not be as needed as they once were, but we kind of counter that by saying access to technology isn’t

always easy and there is a big section of our population that doesn’t have access. They call it the digital divide. Libraries, more and more, that’s the role they play, providing that access,” he said.

The library is also working on developing a mobile application, something a lot of smaller libraries do not have.

“What the App does is for library patrons, all their records are on the App, they can search our catalogue. They can place holds. They are integrated with e-books. Right now getting an e-book is still a bit of a challenge, but with the App, you just sync the App up with your library card. Patrons can scan barcodes, so if they are at a friend’s house and see a book they want they scan the barcode with their cell phone and a pop-up window will come up and say “does my library have that book?” If the answer is yes they can put a hold on it and if the answer is no they can send us an email and say, “Hey, I’m a patron. I like that book. Can you get it for me?” and we can either buy it or interlibrary loan the book. The ultimate purpose of the mobile App is engagement from patrons.”

He continued, “We want hundreds of people to have this App and get feedback from them. They can stay up to date on our events, our programing. If they like a certain type of book, every time we catalogue one of those books they know about it. If they like a certain author, anytime one of that author’s books comes in they will know about it. They are connected with us and more importantly we are connected with them.”

For example, Laverty said using the App on a smart device people could be notified a new book from their favourite author has just been added to the library’s collection. With a few clicks they could then get that e-book and be reading right away.

“We would like to have a community of readers and you could read that book and score it for other people in Sioux Lookout. All our catalogued books, not just e-books. People could see how often the book went out and what people thought of it. People don’t have to disclose what they are reading. We value people’s confidentiality but if they wish they can share their reading habits with the community,” Laverty informed. The library will keep the community updated on these projects through their Facebook page Sioux Lookout Public Library.

Even with all these new innovations, Laverty said books will always have a home at the Sioux Lookout Public Library. “We don’t want to disenfranchise the old guard either. We’ve heard numerous times patrons don’t want books to go away, and books are not going to be going away. The library is still full of relevant books for the community and part of our job is finding the books that people want to read and putting them on the shelf. That’s still a priority, but we also have to evolve. We can’t just be about books. We have to do other things to meet people’s demands. We’re here to provide information and more and more information is being found on-line and sometimes it’s hard to find and not free.”

QEDHS wins annual mock trial competitionTim Brody

AssociAte editor

QUEEN Elizabeth District High School students

got a chance recently to get an inside look at the criminal justice system by participating in a mock trial against Dryden High School.

This is the third year QEDHS and DHS have squared off against each other in the competition.

The mock trial took place at the Dryden Court House before Justice Sarah Trach.

The competition is sponsored by the Kenora District Law Association and is organized by

Assistant Crown Attorney Peter Keen.

QEDHS Grade 12 Academic Law Teacher John MacRae shared the scenario students had to work with. “The case was a first degree murder charge. What happened was there was a fight in an apartment building and the accused was charged with pushing a person over a balcony to his death.”

QEDHS students Ryan Dasno and Barry McLoughlin acted as crown attorneys on the case, while DHS students provided the defense.

QEDHS students also played the part of witnesses and jury members.

Dasno described his participation in the mock trial as a crown attorney. “It was a lot of preparation. It really showed how much work it takes to be a lawyer.”

McLoughlin added, “There was a lot of going over the material again, and again, and again.”

Asked what it was like to present the mock case before a real judge in a real court house, Dasno said, “You got pretty nervous. You wanted to make sure you said the right things and not make our case look bad. The defense definitely came up with some different perspectives on things they were going to ask our witnesses.”

M c L o u g h l i n commented, “At the time it was nerve wracking but it was a good experience overall.”

Justice Trach and Susan Korzinski, manager of court services for Dryden and Sioux Lookout, judged the case and awarded the win in the competition to QEDHS.

MacRae added the defendant was found not guilty of first degree murder, but guilty of manslaughter.

Dasno and McLoughlin thanked their coaches, lawyers Mark Schaub and Simon Owen, for helping them prepare for the case.

Keen said, “This competition is a great

opportunity for high school students to learn about the justice system, and to learn about the roles played by lawyers, witnesses, police officers, and court participants.”

The annual mock trial competition between

QEDHS and DHS has proven so successful that Beaver Brae Secondary School in Kenora may join the competition next year.

MacRae’s students learned about the history of law, rights and freedoms, and criminal law this year.

Fire guts Sioux Lookout homeTim Brody

AssociAte editor

THE Sioux Lookout Volunteer Fire Department had

a busy evening July 3 after being notified by a 911 call of a fire at 17 Lakeshore Drive.

Sioux Lookout Fire

Chief Rob Favot said the elderly occupant of the home, Mrs. Margaret Donnelly, was able to escape without injury before firefighters arrived shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Twenty-two firefighters, along with two pumper trucks, a compressed

foam truck, and a ladder truck responded to the blaze which was officially out at midnight.

Favot said the interior of the home suffered major damage.

He concluded, “The heat was pretty intense and there was lots of

heavy black smoke. The guys did a great job being able to contain it to the inside of the house under really intense conditions. We were scared it was going to flash over so we had to be really cautious.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire damaged home.

Enthusiasts of all ages participated in the bike ride.

Mayor Dennis Leney, left, and Lac Seul Chief Clifford Bull shared the homecoming.

There were a variety of activities for the children to enjoy.

Face painting was popular during the day.

Continued from frontMary, Have You Ever Seen Rain and many others, leaving the crowd wanting more at the conclusion of the night.

Saturday, despite windy conditions and overcast skies, a crowd of more than 500 people came to enjoy the Street Fair and Family Fun Day that included face

painting, loot bags, water slide, bouncy castles, sumo wrestling, and a toddler bouncer.

The day commenced at 11 a.m. and at noon there was a free barbecue that provided hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, soft drinks and bottled water.

Master of Ceremonies DJ Slipper-E kept the crowd entertained with his quick repartee as he

encouraged the children present to participate in games which included a form of watery musical chairs, dancing near the water slide and then quickly pairing off into numbers of four which brought squeals of delight from the participating toddlers.

The afternoon entertainment consisted of an archery range and

a log cutting competition using chainsaws which was held at the Hudson Fire Hall and won by David Starratt. Also included in the afternoon activities were the Ladies Auxiliary Strawberry Social and Bake Sale and a Pig Roast, sponsored by the town of Sioux Lookout, which commenced at 5 p.m.

The highlight of the

day was a Marathon event which took the form of 45 bike riders, including three over 70 years old, who started from Sioux Lookout Information Centre, Five Mile Corner, or Pelican School junction and pedaled to Hudson. Also participating were two runners, Clement and Athena Cospito, who started from Frog

Rapids and ran all the way, finishing on the main street. Although it was not competitive, first in were Doug Lawrence, Jennifer Maki, Lori Durante, Laurel Hakala, John Bath, and Paul Hoftyzer.

At the conclusion ,all participants were treated to a lunch of homemade soup, sandwiches and dessert and before

The day concluded with an indoor beach party

leaving to ride back were invited to take part in a random draw in which seven names were pulled from a basket for homecoming event t-shirts, and four names for $25 gift certificates from DJ’S Gas Bar.

The day concluded with an indoor beach party at the Hudson Hall which started at 9 p.m. and ran till the early

hours of the morning. The activities of the

day drew comments from participants. Chris Peetwayway said, “I had a great time. The kids had a lot of fun.”

Candice Ceccetto was there with her daughters Novalea and Kalan. She shared, “It’s awesome. We are from Sioux Lookout and we came to enjoy the day. The kids

had a blast. There were lots of activities for them to do.”

Sunday brought a slight improvement in the weather. It also brought 100 people to the Lost Lake Drop In Centre to close the homecoming. They partook in a breakfast of pancakes, sausages, fruits, meat and cheese trays, and cake,

complemented by juices, tea and coffee.

Mayor Leney summed it up. “It’s a good deal,” he said.

Lola Goodwin concurred. “Breakfast was excellent. The fruit and cake for desert was good. The people were friendly. I met a couple of nice, interesting ladies at the Strawberry Tea yesterday.”

She added, “It was a very busy little town yesterday, a little fun street. It reminded me of a long time ago because it used to be very busy back in the 70s and 80s.”

The organizers were happy. Gebrielle Schimmel commented, “I wanted this event to be something that Hudson hasn’t had in a long time, namely

the two communities coming together. At the opening night there were more people from out of town. At least half of those who attended, including Vicki Glena-Norris from Manitoba. I hope everyone had a good time.”

Bob Starratt concluded, “It’s been a long, long time since we had such a great day in town.”

Cedar Bay Day Camp up and running for another season

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

PARENTS looking for summer fun for their children

may be interested to know Cedar Bay Day Camp is up and running for another season.

The program is for boys and girls from 4 to 13.

Municipal Program Coordinator Marc Nielsen shared, “It’s a Monday to Friday

day camp which runs from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. unless there is a holiday. Each week, throughout

the eight weeks, there is a different theme. Last week to kick-off summer camp which started on June 23, was Wild, Wild West Week. The week they are in now is Halloween in July. Next week is Pirate Paradise. Each week they do many different activities such as canoeing, baking, crafts, play camp games, archery. Then there are also special activities geared around the themes. They get exposed to a wide variety of things. At the end of the week there is a drama presentation parents are

invited to.” A partnership with the

Friends of Cedar Bay has allowed the program to offer an equestrian elective and there is a canoe instruction elective as well.

Registration takes place weekly and Nielsen said there is plenty of room.

Seventeen children attended the camp in its first week and 23 in week two.

The fee is $130 per week. Daily drop-ins

are also possible for $26 per day.

Parents interested in registering their children can do so at the Rec Centre or call 737-1994 to receive registration forms by email or fax.

“Things have been fantastic. The kids have been having a really good time,” Nielsen said.

Taylor Wallace, 8, said, “It’s really fun and it’s better than sitting in my house with nothing to do.

I get to go swimming and I get entertained. I like Cedar Bay Day Camp.”

Jordyn Seguin, 11, remarked, “It’s really fun. I get to hang out with a lot of my friends. We get to go swimming and do fun activities.”

Jesse Crispino, 8, concluded, “My favourite thing is archery. I like when we play games like capture the flag and go swimming.”

drinks and water were served to hungry participants.

The highlight of the day was the presentation of plaques of appreciation to long serving members Felicia Waboose, Francine Pellerin, Vivian Green, and founding member Sarah Melvin (deceased) who was represented by her brother Ronnie Beaver who spoke of how she had her healing camp and sweat lodge, sacred fire, and a place for people to fast, and of her concern over the number of youth suicides that were occurring in the communities. She asked Beaver to continue to help the young people.

Lisa Beardy from Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) was present on behalf of Deputy Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler. “It is important for Equay-wuk to offer the services and programs for women

in the north and I want to congratulate them for 25 years.”

She then presented Angeconeb and Carroll with a painting on behalf of NAN. Following this, a birthday cake was cut and distributed to all present.

The evening ended with a talent quest, the winners of which were first place Tyrone Taylor who received $300, second place Allyne Harel $200 and third place Betty Anderson $100.

The jigging contest was won by Bradley Danielson who received $100 and the techno/dub dancing contest by Cedar Fiddler who also received $100.The event concluded at 10 p.m.

There was a positive reaction from the people who attended. Dan Nobis who recently moved here with his family from Thunder Bay commented, “I

came with my family to enjoy the festivities. We just moved here so we try to get to know people. Everything is nice here and the kids are excited about being here.” Anna Phelan said, “I really liked it and I’m glad they had a

community orientated event. A lot of Sioux Lookout folks came. I enjoyed myself and congratulations to Equay-wuk for all the work that they have done. I learned a lot being involved with them when I was a volunteer and I remember Sarah Melvin. She was a very passionate lady about dealing with issues in the north concerning women.”

Angeconeb shared, “Today has gone well and a lot more people

turned up than we thought because of the bad weather. We hope to be around for another 25 years.”

Carroll added, “It is the first time we have done this and it’s gone well. A lot of different people turned up to talk to us and find out what we are about.”

Fiddler concluded, “Today was good. That’s the way we are as Anishnaawbe. We like

to celebrate life and the accomplishments of our women leaders.”

SLAH Women’s Outdoor Weekend a hit with participantsTim Brody

AssociAte editor

SIxTEEN women recently spent a weekend in

Sioux Lookout learning a variety of outdoor activities courtesy of the Sioux Lookout Anglers and Hunters (SLAH).

This was the organization’s second Women’s Outdoor Weekend (WOW).

The ladies enjoyed two days of ATVing,

boating, wilderness survival training, camp setup, chainsaw use, hunting 101, map and compass use, archery, fishing and fish filleting, shooting (long gun, shotgun and handgun).

SLAH President Cory Lago shared, “The idea came from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. They do these programs down in southern Ontario.”

Attendance for this

year’s WOW event increased from the 10 women who participated in the first WOW event.

He added, “We hope they all had fun and we will see a whole new group again next year. Thank you to our great members and volunteers that made this possible, especially Jeremy Funk, Yvon Goulet, Willie Noland, Wally Glena, Chris Pizziol, Linda Muskie Mamma Rice

at Moosehorn Lodge, and Natalia Gauthier. We would also like to thank Beth Dasno, Janine Lavoie and Dave Terry for their time and expertise.”

Lago said the WOW filled up quickly. “It filled up in about a week. We sent it out to our members and they sent it out to their friends and it was full almost right away.”

Participants said they had a great time.

Sarah Morin shared, “It was a fabulous weekend and very well organized! All of the volunteers were extremely helpful and added to the fun of a bunch of ladies trying out some new activities, many for the first time! It didn’t matter whether you had experience or not, it gave us an

opportunity to try new things, remember how much fun the activities are, and to learn some things that we didn’t know (or thought we knew) about the outdoors! I would highly recommend this weekend to any and all ladies!! You don’t have to be someone that is “into”

hunting and fishing to enjoy this event...it’s for everyone!! Jeremy, Cory and all of the volunteers do a fantastic job of making sure all of the ladies have a great weekend!!”

Kimberly Murphy stated, “It was a fantastic gathering of fine ladies who took the initiative to

do something different...and with success we did an incredible job!!! We laughed, and we learned and we were certainly catered to!! I will definitely be participating in round two!! I truly believe the volunteers deserve a much deserved pat on the back, as it was really a time to remember forever!!! Good job ladies!!!”

DeAnna Lance concurred. “I had a wonderful time at the WOW weekend. It was well organized and a lot of fun. Jeremy and Cory did a great job. As a woman who enjoys the outdoors, I felt appropriately challenged in a well-rounded group of activities. I felt more confident in activities that I’ve had prior experience in such as ATVing and boating,

and am looking forward to improving new skills I’ve learned such as archery, canoeing and operating a chainsaw. This year I participated in the weekend with my 23-year-old daughter Samantha, and I’m looking at participating again next year with my 15 - year - old daughter Elizabeth. It is a weekend that I would highly recommend!!!”

Josee Duewel concluded, “It was really well organized and a lot of fun. The SLAH members who volunteered to run it really went above and beyond to make it a fun learning experience. I would totally recommend it to anyone regardless of their experience.”

SLAH club member Jeremy Funk organized the Women’s Outdoor

Weekend and stated, “The volunteers and myself really enjoy putting it on. It’s a great

time. It’s a lot of fun for us. It’s a lot of fun to teach new people these skills.”

Funk echoed Lago’s comments, adding, “OFAH has been running similar programs in

southern Ontario for a number of years now. We are probably one of the smaller clubs to be doing this. It brings in new members, creates new interest in outdoor activities and more importantly it introduces this segment of the population to the things that many of us love about Sioux Lookout.”

Lago said he was glad to hear the ladies had such a good time. “It was a fun weekend. We take the information the ladies give us to try to make it even better the next time.”

Th I RT Y- E I G h T teams took to the water on Sunday

to compete in Sioux Lookout’s first Jr. Walleye Championship sponsored by Morgan Fuels and the Sioux Lookout Anglers and Hunters.

Teams of two, an adult and a youth, spent the day fishing, then returned to the town beach with their catch.

Teams were allowed to submit one walleye over slot size and three under with the heaviest weights winning the tournament.

Taking 5th place was Team Howie.

In 4th place was the

team of Madison and father Jason MacDonald.

In 3rd place was the team of friends Tyler Baker and Kyle Hulsey.

Finishing in 2nd place was the team of Matthew O’Donovan and James Mansfield.

Taking top spot in the tournament was the first place team of Sydney MacDonald and her father Todd.

Jason MacDonald stated, “It was a good day. A couple storms we dodged but it was a good day and we caught lots of fish.”

Daughter Madison said she enjoys fishing with her father and agreed that it was a fun

day out on the water.Hulsey shared, “It was

pretty good for most of the day. It was a great tournament, a great way to spend time on the water with friends and family.”

Teammate Baker said he had a good time fishing

with his friend.Todd MacDonald

said it was exciting to win the tournament with his daughter, adding the fishing was great all day and the tournament was well organized.

Sydney said she had a great day fishing with her

dad, something they do together often.

Cory Lago, SLAH President, thanked everyone who helped out with the event and

participated.Max Morgan, Site

Jeremy Funk, SLAH member, commented, “It’s been something we’ve been thinking about for a while now and Morgan Fuels was gracious enough to step onboard as the main sponsor.”

The club has regularly hosted the Sioux Lookout

Morgan concluded, “Morgan Fuels likes to get involved with and support the community. The work that the Sioux Lookout Anglers and Hunters do promoting enjoyment of the wilderness around our community is top notch. Memories & Celebrations of Life

Lifesaving equipment a birthday bash present Tim Brody

AssociAte editor

FOR many people, a milestone birthday such as 50 is great

cause for celebration and family members often go all out throwing their loved one a birthday party to remember.

Richard Goretzki’s wife, family and friends did exactly that for his 50th birthday with more than 150 people attending a pig roast at his Alcona home.

However, what makes the Goretzki’s story different is that in lieu of gifts, they passed out t-shirts for a donation which they then gave to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre.

The Goretzki’s $1500 donation will be used to purchase a holter monitor for the Cardio/Rehab Department.

Candice Goretzki explained the fundraising birthday party for her husband. “So many people helped us in the community when Richard broke his back a few years ago. For his 50th birthday party instead of getting gag gifts we decided to collect donations for the health centre and we are encouraging

others to think of the hospital when planning similar things.”

Richard Goretzki commented, “I think it was a great idea. It’s something to help the community and maybe other people will do the same thing. A lot of people came together to build this hospital and anything we can do to add to that is great. We’re just trying to do our part.”

The Goretzkis praised the care Richard received at the health centre and highlighted the importance of keeping the health centre well equipped so people can stay in the community for medical treatment.

The holter monitor was identified by the hospital as an urgent need.

Kathryn Davidson, Sioux Lookout Meno

Ya Win Health Centre Foundation Administrator shared, “The monitor will be used to record a patient’s heart activity, help to identify slow, fast or irregular heartbeats, allow doctors to see if a patient’s medication is working, help explain why patients get symptoms such as dizziness, faintness, or racing heartbeat, and determine

if the heart is receiving enough oxygen to meet its needs…This monitor is one of three additional monitors that the health centre requires. The foundation encourages donations in celebration of events such as this to help meet ongoing equipment needs at SLMHC. We are very grateful that the Goretzki family thought of the health centre for their celebration. The

additional monitor will significantly reduce wait times and travel burdens for patients who require monitoring to record heart activity.”

The Goretzkis appreciated Volt Entertainment donating their services, M & M sewage for donating port-a-potties, Fresh Market Foods, and Darren Carroll for being a designated driver for the birthday party.

In Loving MemoryOf our Mother, Sister, Aunt and Friend

“Do not stand at my grave and weepI am not there. I do not sleep.I am a thousand winds that blow.I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight on ripened grain.I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hushI am the swift uplifting rushOf quiet birds in circled flight.I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry.I am not there. I did not die.”

Sioux Lookout shows off patriotic spirit with Canada Day activitiesTim Brody

AssociAte editor

CO M M U N I T Y members flocked to the town

beach July 5 for Canada Day festivities hosted by the Sioux Lookout Lions Club.

Heavy rain on July first forced the

day’s activities to be postponed.

Lions Club President Chris Larsh said it was nice to see people out having a good time. “It’s a nice crowd. We’re having a good time. Good to see everybody out.”

He added, “We’ve

been doing this forever. I’ve been part of this club for 16 years and it’s just second nature that we know we are going to do this every July 1. A lot of what we do today raises money for the fireworks show tonight.”

Kids games, bouncy

castles, Cedar Bay horse-drawn wagon rides, painting an OPP vehicle, and a cake created by Althea George were all highlights of the day.

People packed the town beach and boats filled the bay to take in the evening

fireworks show.“Althea is the best.

She does this every year without asking. It’s nice to see the OPP come out and have fun and let the kids decorate their vehicle… It’s great to see people having fun. That’s why we do this,” Larsh said.

Sioux Lookout Mayor Dennis Leney commended the Lions Club. “It’s nice to see people out having a good time. The Lions Club, like I said in my opening remarks, is a small group of men and women that do an awful lot of good things for this community.”
