considered.“As well, there is

program access and program opportunities for all of our students in Sioux Lookout to consider. We’re down to what I would consider three sites… What I can share with the community is that they will see drills on the Sioux Mountain Public School site within the next two weeks as they begin the environmental assessment sampling and tests of the soils there.”

Monteith said such

drilling will not take place at QEDHS as the board already knows what they have there.

The third site under consideration and the least likely of the three to be developed was introduced to the board as a possible option by the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Monteith said.

It is located across from the entrance to Cedar Bay.

Monteith said finding the right site has not been easy. “We started

off with 10 to 12 sites and as we have learned along our journey over the past year, just because there are properties out there that would be seeming possibilities to build a 100,000 square foot facility, other matters and considerations such as environmental restrictions, provincially protected wetlands, have restricted the sites we can consider, access to services and a myriad of other considerations, but those are the key ones.

“We’re not building a garage. We’re building

a brand new high school. The footprint that we will be creating requires sizable pieces of land and when you factor all that together that is why we are at a short list now of three sites.”

Monteith continued, “Sioux Lookout is a community that is growing, but we are not interested in building a high school vast distances out of town. Not everybody catches the bus and not everybody has a vehicle. Some people have to walk to school.

“Our objective is to make this school a community hub, because keep in mind it isn’t just the high school. We’re bringing the college. We’re bringing the university. We’re bringing Meno Ya Win. We’re bringing Firefly and the Hospital for Sick Kids… Keeping it centrally accessible to the community is of great importance.”

The hiring of an architect for the project has helped move the process along, Monteith said. “The

architect has extensive and vast experience in dealing with these matters. The architect is now driving the more technical assessment types of processes such as the drilling… I can tell you the architect and myself and my business superintendent and facilities folks have already been to Sioux Lookout. The architect has been to all the properties we’ve considered.”

Construction of the new $30 million high school is expected to begin next spring.

Cultural festival to be held in Sioux Lookout Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THE Municipality of Sioux Lookout’s cultural

division is hosting a three-day event in conjunction with those that will be taking place simultaneously across Canada from September 26 to September 28 to

celebrate Culture Days.The festival was

initiated by The Canadian Arts Summit, with full support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Culture pour tous, and The Banff Centre. It was officially launched in 2010 with the idea of raising awareness of arts and culture in

local communities by providing the opportunity for Canadians from all walks of life to participate and showcase their creative talents and to learn about the cultural resources and artistic activities that are available within each community.

For Sioux Lookout,

2014 represents the second year of involvement in the event. The official opening, to be held at the Heritage Railway Station September 26, will be a celebration featuring open stage hosted downstairs by local musicians Klaus Rossler and Mel Stewart, and

the community museum open house upstairs with an adjoining room reserved for local artists and artisans who will be exhibiting their works.

Appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be available throughout the day. Everyone is invited to attend. Admission is free.

Reilly Scott, Arts and Cultural Coordinator for the Municipality, organized the kick-off and gave some insight as to how it came about. “This is the Municipal Cultural Division’s second year spearheading the celebrations in Sioux

W.C.E. “Captain” Kidd

William Charles Ernest Kidd was born in Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland June 10, 1894. He came to Canada in 1911 and became part of the staff of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Virden, Manitoba.

Bill Kidd joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Saskatoon May 8, 1916 and went overseas with the 196th University Battalion. Later he served in France with the 1st Battalion Canadian Mounted Rifles # 911028.

The 1st Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, CEF, was an infantry unit of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War. Originally a mounted infantry unit named the 1st Regiment, Canadian Mounted Rifles, CEF, it was formed on November 7, 1914, in Brandon,

Manitoba. Part of the 1st Brigade Canadian Mounted Rifles, the unit landed in France on September 22, 1915, where the conditions of the Western Front made its mounts more of a hindrance than a benefit. On January 1, 1916, both CMR brigades (six regiments) were dismounted, converted to infantry and reorganized as the 8th Infantry Brigade (four battalions). The 1st Regiment, CMR, became the 1st Battalion, CMR, and it absorbed half the personnel of the 3rd Battalion CMR. The 1st CMR, along with the 4th CMR, was manning the 3rd Division’s front on June 2, 1916, when the Germans launched their assault at the outset of the Battle of Mount Sorrel. Its positions were overrun, and 557 of its 692 members (80 per cent) were killed, wounded or captured.

The battalion was

rebuilt over the summer, and it was one of the first Canadian Corps units to attack when the corps shifted to the Somme. On September 15, 1916, the 1st CMR was in the first wave attacking Mouquet Farm. Although the attack gained ground, the Canadians did not take the strong point, but the assault was considered a successful diversion from the main attack on Courcelette.

The battalion was disbanded on November 15, 1920.

In 1927 Capt. Kidd came to Hudson as manager of the Bank of Commerce at the peak of the Red Lake Gold Rush. At this time he became enthused with the future of the North Country and left the bank to work with Bathurst Mines and the Alex Gilles’ Mining Company.

He then worked at Sioux Lookout for Western Canada

Airways, followed by Starratt Transportation at Hudson.

At the time of his marriage to Laura Ament (sister of Mike Ament) in 1939, he was employed by the Uchi Lake Mines. Laura was born and educated in Brussels, Ontario. She had taken normal school training and arrived in Sioux Lookout in 1925 to teach in the public school. For the next 12 years they moved about with Capt Kidd’s work. When the Uchi Mines closed he went to Leitch Gold Mines in Beardmore as Superintendent of the Stores Department.

In 1951 he returned to Sioux Lookout where he was employed as a district clerk for the Great Lakes Paper Company.

Laura returned to the classroom in 1952 due to an acute teacher shortage. She was dedicated to the academic and moral training of her students, emphasizing that they become responsible citizens. She was also involved with Girl Guides in the area and the United Church. Much has been said in praise of her work here.

After that he did accounting for the Mayfair Theatre and Lanes, Beaver Lumber Co. and various other

businesses. Laura continued teaching until her retirement in 1963.

Capt Kidd was Secretary Treasurer of the Public School Board for several years and was involved with the building of Wellington School. He also served on the Sioux Lookout General Hospital Board as Chairman. The community lost a dedicated worker and sadly missed the contributions he made to the life of this town when he passed away in 1964.

Laura moved on with her life, and married widower Stan Hobsen of Palmerston, Ontario, where she remained until her death April 4, 1980. A special annual award was instituted to honour this pioneer teacher – the Laura Ament Kidd Hobsen Award given to a student in Grade 8 who has shown the highest academic achievement in English and history, has a positive attitude toward school, and has displayed an enjoyment of learning.

Capt Kidd and Laura were two true pioneers of the North Country, which they grew to love and serve. Both left a legacy for this community to remember.

Spirit WalksThe Sioux Lookout Genealogy Club is pleased to be able to have honoured

the pioneer men of Sioux Lookout who fought in World War 1 which began 100 years ago. We would like to thank the families and John Cole Jr. of the Legion who helped us with putting the whole experience together. Our goal was to educate ourselves and others on that significant history and the Canadian part in it. We were not able to present everyone’s story, so we recognize that there are many that are yet to be told. We welcome suggestions and certainly are pleased to have help with them. Please contact Vera at 737-2321 or Donna at 737-3303.

Growing like the dickens

There is some interesting math in the “Sioux Lookout grappling with new OPP funding....” article in last week’s Bulletin.

Our unsubsidized cost for policing is 3 million dollars, or “about $1500 per household.” This means we have around 2000 households in Sioux Lookout, I guess. But, we receive a 1 million dollar subsidy to help us cope with this bill which, according to our treasurer, decreases our actual bill to “around $870 per household.”

Taking that subsidy seems to have the interesting effect of adding nearly three hundred households then. We’d better keep an eye on indulging in subsidies or this place is likely to get really crowded.

I’d say a good first step in dealing with policing costs might be new calculators or, at least, making sure that the old ones are not being read upside down. How about this: in one paragraph....“Sixty per cent of a municipality’s bill will be a base policing cost while the other 40 will be for reactive calls for service,” but, in the following paragraph we learn that “the cheapest part of Sioux Lookout’s bill will be the base cost.” Really?

What is the cost of a “reactive call?” Who is making these calls? For what? I hope the officers who

make these reactive calls are getting a cut of the proceeds. Are they? How about a little courage and some useful data?

Incidentally, if the policing bill for Pickle Lake is around $380 per household, after an 85 per cent subsidy, it means that the actual cost per household there is around $2500,

making our $1500 per household bill quite modest in comparison. And, if our policing subsidy of around 33 per cent somehow results in an additional 300 households in Sioux Lookout, the population of Pickle Lake, with a subsidy of 85 per cent, must be growing like the dickens.

of our children. We are particularly proud that 93 per cent of our Kindergarten graduates last year were reading independently.”

Boos informed, “New this September, we have introduced a strengths-based learning program throughout our school. All kids have strengths! Students have the opportunity to identify and explore their strengths as they engage in a variety of learning experiences. This strengths-based program helps promote healthy, happy, successful learners.

With a school-wide focus on academic excellence, our staff will continue to work as a professional team to implement 21st Century classroom instructional strategies that are interesting, engaging, and prepare our students for the world now and into their future.

“Teaching the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy is the foundation of our inquiry-based academic program. Our inquiry-based learning environment in the Kindergarten classrooms is very successful. We

are implementing a similar approach across all grades. Students need a challenging learning environment where they are given the opportunity to tap into their natural sense of curiosity about the physical, social, and working world around them.

“This is a particularly exciting year for our students and community as we hear about the news of a new high school. It is fantastic to know that the students in our classrooms today will graduate from a fabulous, state of the art facility that will support

all students in our school board.

“As the principal of Sioux Mountain Public School, I am grateful

to have the opportunity to serve a wonderful group of students and their families. I am also pleased to work with a staff that cares so deeply for our students and is committed to the success of each of them. I look forward to the upcoming school year and meeting all of our families at our many school events.

“I am particularly proud to be part of the Keewatin Patricia District School Board. Our school board accepts and embraces all children and families who call Sioux Lookout home. Sioux Mountain Public School prepares children and young adults for living and working in our Sioux Lookout community and global society, with all the diverse 21st century skills necessary for

them to flourish,” Boos concluded.

Wahsa Distance Education Principal Darrin Head stated, “Wahsa Distance Education Centre is one of NNEC’s three high schools. The first day of classes for Wahsa students was on Tuesday, September 2. The beginning of the new school year is always an exciting time for the staff of Wahsa Distance Education Centre. It’s a time to reconnect with colleagues and students and also to meet new ones.

“The beginning of a school year represents a new beginning for students coming to our program for the first time and a continuation of the dream for those who have been with

STUDENTS across the Sioux Lookout area returned to

class last week.Principals and vice

principals from area schools were asked to share their thoughts on the first day back and were given an opportunity to share things happening at their schools.

Pelican Falls First Nations High School Vice Principal Hilary Hardeman said the

majority of students returned to class September 3 with the rest joining their classmates the following day.

“It has been really great. Students are happy to be back. We have a lot of fresh faces, which is really great. Everyone has been so nice to each other,” she said.

Hardeman, a former teacher at the school, moved into the role of vice-principal this year while the school’s former vice principal, Solomon Kakegamic has

now taken on the role of principal.

“We were really lucky there were community members from Sioux Lookout who donated books to our school. Today (September 4) we had students come in and pick books for their houses from the books that were donated. The students were really excited about that,” Hardeman said. Twenty students from the school will be attending the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) science and career conference later this month.

Hardeman added, “We’re offering a new

music program. Students will be able to learn how to play guitar, which is something we haven’t offered before.”

New folding bleachers are being installed in the school gymnasium.

Sports programs are gearing up at the school with tryouts taking place this week.

Angelina Anderson, Director, Dryden, Sioux Lookout & Red Lake campuses of Confederation College commented, “Today (September 4) is the first day of school for the 2014/15 academic year. We’re off to a great start with 36 full-time

students in 15 different programs at our Sioux Lookout campus. Plus, people are still coming in to apply and register. The last date to register is Friday, September 12.

“We have a wide variety of programs running this fall, including the four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in collaboration with Lakehead University. Other programs include: Business Human Resources, Business Accounting, Social Service Worker, Concurrent Disorders, Office Administration, Practical Nursing, Early Childhood Education, College Access, General Arts & Science, Pre-Health Science, Developmental Services Worker, Travel Tourism and Eco-Adventure, Educational Support and Native Child & Family Services Worker.”

Students at Sioux Mountain Public School returned to class on September 3.

Principal Michael Boos commented, “It is always wonderful

to greet our new and returning students as they arrive back from summer break. The smiles on the faces of the students and staff once again anticipate a great year ahead!”

He shared, “Kids Come First is an annual video produced by the Keewatin Patricia District School Board. On the first day, students and staff watch the video which, this year, features students across the board, including Sioux Mountain Public School, expressing their heartfelt appreciation for the positive relationships and support they receive from our staff. These relationships are so important to the academic and personal development of our students and define the character of our KPDSB schools.

“Kids Come First is also a board philosophy that guides us as we develop and implement programs to support academic excellence and foster the social and emotional development

us previously, the dream of a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities, through education. Wahsa Distance Education Centre is honoured to play a part in helping our students turn this dream into reality.”

Head further stated, “One of the students from last year’s graduating class fulfilled his diploma

requirements and earned his Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while incarcerated in Kenora District Jail. Since that time, Wahsa has opened a learning centre in Kenora District Jail and now we have more than 20 students registered with us who are working on courses toward their OSSD. We have a tutor who visits the jail for a few hours every day to assist students with

course work. Staff and administration at Kenora District Jail have been very supportive of the Wahsa program because they see the positive impact that education is having on inmates who choose to take advantage of this unique opportunity. An added advantage is that students who are registered with us while incarcerated at Kenora District Jail can continue to work on their Wahsa

courses after they are released and, therefore, continue to pursue their goal of earning their high school diploma.”

O b i s h i k o k a a n g Elementary School Vice Principal Susie Gray said, “Obishikokaang Elementary School had its first day September 2. We celebrated our first day with traditional songs from the Lac Seul youth drum group Running Caribou.

“The Native Language teacher Mr. Cooke said the opening prayers while offering blessings to the children using the one of the sacred medicines, sage.

“Our Education Director Mrs. Manitowabi was present and offered her words of encouragement for the school year and introduced our new staff.

“Mrs. Gray is our new Vice Principal. Mr. Cooke is our Native Language teacher and Ms. Waswa is our new Kindergarten teacher.”

Gray described the school in Frenchman’s Head, “We are going to be having full-day Kindergarten. We will be having our after school programs - chess, cooking club, track practice, choir/drama, and hip- hop dancing.”

Queen Elizabeth District High School Principal Steve Poling said students first day back to school was September 3.

“It was awesome. It went really, really well. It was really smooth. We had a large group of Grade 9s that came in and they’ve adjusted to the school really well. We had a number of them that were involved in the Reach Ahead program. There were 26 students that were involved in that this summer. They’ve been in the school for three weeks and have actually completed a credit already.”

Poling informed, “We are really excited to be doing consultation and planning for the new building shortly. We’ve already started doing a little bit of work with staff and we have some student stuff upcoming. There is a parent session coming up on September 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the school. It will be an opportunity for parents to come in and help create a

new vision.”Poling added, “We

have a new hockey program, hockey academy, which is a one period program. It’s like a Phys-Ed program focused on hockey. Jason MacMillan is teaching that.

“Our sports programs are all getting up and going. It was really exciting to see all the kids return. The building isn’t a school without the kids. Things are just energized with the kids and staff here.”

The first day of class at Sacred Heart School was September 3.

Vice Principal Pat Vinczeffy stated, “It went really well. It was exciting to see the young people come back. They’re all taller and eager to see their friends again. It was nice to see their smiling faces.”

She continued, “Probably the main difference at our school this year is that we have adopted a kiss and ride program. Just trying to make it as safe as we possibly can for the students. The front loop of the school will be for buses only between 8:15 and 8:40 a.m. and then at the end of the day between 3 o’clock and 3:30. Parents are being very understanding and cooperative as we make this change.

“Parents can come to the back parking lot area where there will be a designated area by the entrance to the playground and that is where parents can drop their children off, give them a kiss and away they go. At the end of the day they come there and their children are waiting for them to be picked up.

“We have a few new faces at our school this year as well as a child and youth worker in the school. We’re really looking forward to having her here.”

previously they could not use it on the old network. They can on the new network.

The launch of the new network will mean that people in Sioux Lookout will be able to enjoy the same Bell services as people living in Toronto.

Laszlo concluded, “Since 2006 we’ve invested approximately $7 billion in our wireless network… expansion is a huge part of that. We operate Canada’s biggest LTE network and we recently acquired licensing from the government for 700 megahertz spectrum which is going to allow

us to deliver fast, fast speeds to rural and remote communities across the country.”

Katie Crowe, Manager - Corporate Brand Communication for Tbaytel shared, “To provide you with a short

background, Tbaytel began providing cellular service in the late 1990s and we introduced our HSPA service to Sioux Lookout and Hudson in 2011. Since this time, we have launched three HSPA cellular sites in the area to provide customers with full voice and data services as well as the added benefit of being able to roam on the Rogers network throughout Canada and around the world.

“Despite already having the largest coverage footprint of any provider in the Sioux Lookout area, we continue to invest in upgrades and improvements. In 2013 Tbaytel added an additional site carrier to one of our existing cell sites, which helped to increase capacity for

customers in the area. We also have plans to build a new cell tower on Mennonite Road this fall, which we are expecting will come into service in late September.”

Tbaytel also has a local full service Tbaytel authorized dealer, Oshtugon Computers.

Crowe explained, “One of Tbaytel’ s key corporate directions is to

invest in the people and organizations throughout Northern Ontario that help to build strong and healthy communities. Currently, Tbaytel supports the Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival and the local Trade, Craft and Home Show hosted by the Sioux Lookout Chamber of Commerce.

“Our goal is to provide our customers

with innovative communication solutions that will meet their needs and we know that the needs of the people living in Northern Ontario are unique. Sioux Lookout is no exception, which is why we are constantly making improvements to our cellular network to provide our customers living there with the best service possible.”

Lookout and it is part of what has become an annual pan-Canadian celebration that happens every year at the end of September. Anyone can participate and we are encouraging any local organizations, businesses and individuals to host

a Culture Days event and/or participate in other events taking place throughout the community.”

She concluded, “Culture Days is an easy and wonderful way to raise awareness of the Sioux Lookout arts and cultural community and

I am very excited about this year’s festivities.”

The Municipal Cultural Division is actively seeking out local artists and artisans to participate in the celebrations by exhibiting their work during the event. The only requirement is that artists live in Sioux Lookout and that they have produced the works.

This opportunity is free and will be available on a first come, first served basis. This is a way for local artists

Fishing competition draws Lac Seul anglers

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

DESPITE the cold weather c o n d i t i o n s ,

58 fishing enthusiasts participated in the Fourteenth Mahkwa Lodge Annual Fishing Derby last Saturday. The lodge is situated on Vaughn Lake in Lac

Seul and the competition was open to all the local community in Lac Seul and Whitefish Bay.

At the conclusion of the day a presentation was held at the lodge, with prizes for the heaviest walleye awarded to the winners by General Manager Evelyn Capay.

First Prize of $2500

went to Glenda Brisket (5.00lb), Second $1500, Jason Bull (4.15lb), Third $1000, Roger Bull (4.14lb) and Fourth $500, Ernie Seguin whose fish weighed in at (4.12lb).

There were also three draws of $100 with names of people that entered the derby. Those drawn were Karen Ningewance,

Dallas Roundhead, and Steven Boles.

Jeremy Capay, Sales and Marketing Manager, and one of the event organizers commented, “I felt the derby was a success and it’s always encouraging to see the community come together to have a great time with fishing and

hopes of winning the prize. Annually, we host the event to give back to the community or something to look forward onward.

“In addition, it’s another way to appreciate our customers for their business over the

season. If there are any suggestions on how to improve the derby for next year, we would love your feedback. All the more, I would like to thank everyone for participating and continue to host the event on annual basis.”

supporting the warriors. It was a great way to get players, parents and the community together.”

Lavoie commented on the idea behind the colour run. “They are generating

a lot of attention and growing in popularity. I know a couple of schools, I’ve talked to their coaches in Southern Ontario, that have run them as fundraisers and

had great success so I thought… why not run one here for all of our folks in the community and surrounding communities to enjoy the fun.”

She described the event’s attendance. “It was awesome, excellent. We figured if we got 50 people out, which we did, that’s a great start for the first year… I think it was

a huge success. I know it was a brand new thing and unfamiliar to a lot of people.”

Lavoie is looking forward to another year of Warriors girls hockey.

“We’ve got some dry-land training going on right now for the girls to get them ready for pre-season and try-outs will start the end of this month.”

Warriors colour run earns vibrant reviews

Tim BrodyAssociAte editor

SIOUx Lookout’s newest and likely most colourful

fundraiser earned rave reviews from those who took part.

The Queen Elizabeth District High School Warriors girls hockey team hosted a colour run last Saturday morning with nearly 60 people participating.

The five kilometre, non-competitive run or walk began and ended at the Sioux Lookout Travel Information Centre.

Participants signed up to take part in the event, paying a $35 registration fee.

Special event t-shirts and colour packets were handed out to participants.

Warriors girls hockey team co-coach Janine Lavoie thanked everyone for coming out and explained what a colour run is and how it works.

“We use non-toxic coloured corn starch,” she said, adding, “We have colour stations along the route and it gets thrown at you as you run through.”

The coloured corn starch sticks to participants’ clothes transforming them into living rainbows by the end of the event.

The coloured corn starch washes off skin and clothing, however Lavoie said participants could take steps to lock the colours into their shirts as mementos of the event if they wished.

Josee Duewel of ONYx Dance Studio

then led the group in a Zumba warm-up.

Participants raved about the event.

“It was fantastic, a great time. I really enjoyed it. It’s a great cause the Warriors girls hockey team. It’s something new to town and hopefully it will be even bigger next year,” said Bruce Van Horne.

Sydney MacDonald and Kyla Kulchyski both played on the hockey team last season and plan to try out for the team again this year.

“It’s nice to see a smaller community like ours come together to support something like this,” MacDonald said.

“It was really fun. I have never done anything like it. Thanks Sioux Lookout for doing this,” Kulchyski commented.

Sara Bye stated, “I had never done a colour run before. It was fun, a good time.”

She added, “It’s the perfect way to raise money in a place like this. People like to get involved and support a good cause.”

Steven Forbes participated wearing a white wedding dress, which drew applause and laughs from many in attendance.

He shared, “I had never participated in a colour run before. It was a great fundraiser… The community is so supportive of fundraisers and I have no doubt this will become an annual event.

He added with a laugh, “I wish I had someone carry my train for me, but it was a lot of fun.”

Both of Forbes’ sons participated in the run.

Kim Murphy took part in the colour run with her daughter McKenna.

Murphy said, “I think it was really fun. I kept telling her, just another 30 seconds. She really pushed herself. I think it’s fantastic. It gets the community together. It gets moms out with their kids. I’m looking forward to doing it again and I bet next year it will be even bigger.

Even though the event was non-competitive, McKenna said she ran hard.

She said she enjoyed running in the colour run with her mother.

As a young hockey player, McKenna said it was great that so many people came out to support girls hockey.

Duewel ran with her daughter Katie and cousin Emily Paterson.

All three thought it was a great event.

Steve Rattai commented, “I did it to support the Warriors and be active. It was good, a perfect day for it. It was a lot of fun. Hopefully they can do it annually.”

Warriors girls hockey team co-coach Rob Favot shared, “I think it was great. It was nice to see all the people out today. The weather was good. This was our first try at it and hopefully we can build on it for next year. We’d like to make it an annual event. This time of year works great with the kids back to school. It was great to see mothers and fathers running with their children. Lots of people having fun and

Golf day raises money for a needy cause

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

DESPITE the overcast conditions, approximately 100

people entered the Eighth Annual Charity Golf Tournament hosted by Tikinagan Child and Family Services. It was held at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club.

Twenty-four teams, each consisting of four people, entered into the spirit of the tournament and spent the day which started at 9 a.m., playing twice around the 9 hole golf course, concluding around 4:30 p.m.

The cost per team to enter the competition was $400 with all proceeds from registration fees and also a raffle and a silent auction going to the Mamow Oshki Pimagihowin Fire Relief Fund which assists children and families in the remote northern communities served by Tikinagan who are affected by the loss of homes and property as a

result of house fires. The fund purchases

essential items such as clothing and beds in a family’s time of crisis.

Doug Pierce, Property Manager with the organization, has been the main organizer of the tournament since its inception. He was unable to participate this year due to family commitments so the Director of Finance & Administration John Harrington and Finance Manager Tracy Dyck took on the task of putting the event together.

Harrington commented on the FRF, “It was formed for families in need. In the past we have used the funds that have been raised specifically for victims who have lost their homes or belongings due to a house fire. Most families do not have insurance to replace these items and last year we assisted four families who experienced unfortunate events, mainly due to loss from

fire. I have been involved in the tournament for four years and I really appreciate all the support from the people who have turned up today and a special thanks to our sponsors. It’s all for a good cause.”

Ernest Beck, Executive Director, concurred, “We have been running this for a few years and this year has been really exciting as we just seem to be getting more teams each year. This year we have 24 which is a lot more than we anticipated. It just seems to be getting more popular each year.”

As an added incentive, a prize of a truck worth $43,000 was offered to anyone who attained a hole in one.

At the conclusion of the day the contestants gathered at the clubhouse to enjoy a steak, complemented with mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad, desert and assorted beverages, and to engage in conversation with

friends old and new.It was then time for

the awards.The tournament

was sponsored by 31 local businesses and 11 from Thunder Bay, Red Lake and Dryden. Beck, who opened the evening, acknowledged their contributions and the efforts of Pierce in preceding years.

He was followed by Dyck who presented the prizes. The raffle winner was the first to be announced, the prize being a 60 inch Sharp smart television. Winner Shane Sakchekapo commented, “It’s all luck.”

This was followed by First Prize which went to Team Agustin who received jackets and Ipods.

Second place winners, Team Gibb, were given cooler chairs and cup sets, followed by a random draw which was Team Slate Falls Airways who received t-shirt and hat packages.

Finally the Most Honest Award went to

Team Rez who were given backpacks filled with an assortment of items such as golf balls and pens.

Dyck then presented the various individual prizes for the Silent Auction after which the evening concluded.

“A good day was had by all. The weather held out and I want to thank everyone who took part and supported us,” she said.

Tikinagan Associate Executive Director Thelma Morris shared, “We are a large agency that covers 30 plus communities, so people look to us for resources and I think we are an agency that people look to for support and help. In the north, unfortunately, we have house fires and we assist those in need by providing monetary assistance or through the fire relief fund. All proceeds from the tournaments go toward fire relief.”

She continued, “This year is absolutely

a success and just looking around today, everyone was having a good time. The money goes toward a good cause and we have had wonderful support from the community of Sioux Lookout who come out to help us raise funds at our charity golf tournament. We are grateful for their support and I also would like to thank our compassionate and caring staff who worked hard to put this event together. We could not have done this without them. Great team spirit for sure. “The Charity Golf Classic seems to me to be getting bigger and better each year. It’s great, awesome and a lot of fun and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.”

Adam McCarty, who was on a team with members of Lac Seul First Nation, summed up, “I met lots of new people and I didn’t spend much time in the bush - so all good.”

of all the things happening here.”

Showcase organizers and hosts Meredith Culham and Ashley Zaffino shared, “This is the second annual Recreation and Leisure Showcase. It’s good to give community members the opportunity to sign up for various clubs. We are pleased with the turnout we have this year and we would like to thank the organizations and clubs that entered a booth and we look forward to hosting another showcase next year.”

Local leisure activities showcased at Recreation Centre

Geoff ShieldsstAff Writer

THE Municipal Parks and Recreation Department held

its Annual Recreation & Leisure Showcase in the Rec Centre gymnasium September 3. The event drew an attendance of 310 people.

A ballot box was set

up at the entrance and all who came through the doors were invited to submit their names to win a door prize.

Once inside they were able to peruse the information booths and speak to representatives from the 14 local organizations that were on hand to advise and

enroll prospective participants.

The idea for the showcase originated from members of the public calling the Rec Centre for programs that were not associated with the Centre and it was thought by them that if an event were staged at which all the clubs and organizations within the community could gather in one place and time it would help to facilitate easier access for families to enable them

to gather information and participate in the activities offered in town.

This year a diversity of clubs and organizations made themselves available. These included the Sioux Lookout Gymnastics Club, Sioux Lookout Minor Hockey, Municipal Cultural Division, Kids Kaleidoscope, Scouts Canada, Sioux Yama Isshinryu Karate Club, Onyx Dance Studio, Girl Guides, Air Cadets,

Sioux Lookout Figure Skating Club, Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club, Parks and Recreation Department, Sioux Hudson Entertainment Series, and the Nishnawabe-Gamik Friendship Centre.

A special highlight of the night was a demonstration of Zumba, an energetic activity involving both dance and aerobic elements by Onyx Dance Studio Director Manuela Michelizzi who commented, “I think it’s

a wonderful opportunity for families to see the variety of programming in our community. We are looking forward to another great year of dance.”

Natalie Popovic, a scout leader representing Scouts Canada at the event, was enthusiastic. “It’s been a busy night with lots of families out. We have had half a dozen parents inquiring about the Beavers program. It’s good because it gets the word out to the community

Rotary Club donates funds to local organizationsGeoff ShieldsstAff Writer

ME M B E R S of the Rotary Club

of Sioux Lookout attended their regular meeting downstairs at the Royal Canadian Legion August 21. The main item on the agenda was the

presentation of funds to local organizations raised through Rotary radio bingo, held in partnership with the Rotary Club of Dryden Charity Foundation.

The funds are a portion of the proceeds of weekly bingo cards sold in the Sioux

Lookout area. One of Rotary’s priorities is to support initiatives related to children, families, and poverty within our community.

This year the amount given to 10 local organizations totaled $10,000. Cheques were presented to them by Henry Wall,

local Rotarian and bingo chair.

President of the club Clifford Mushquash said, “The Rotary Club wants to thank the community for supporting our bingo, because it is through your support we are able to help our local organizations.

The following recipients received donations:

• SLMHC Foundation• Sioux Lookout Handi-Transit• Sioux Lookout Figure Skating Club• Sioux Lookout Gymnastics Club• Scouts Canada Sioux Lookout• Sioux Mountain Public School breakfast program• Sacred Heart School breakfast Program• QEDHS breakfast program• Sioux Lookout Out of the Cold

THE idea of curbside swaps has been around

for many years and is a practice followed throughout many North American cities and in some overseas countries such as Australia.

The first curbside swap in Sioux Lookout occurred in the summer of 2011 and was introduced by the Municipal Environment Committee which was initiated in 2007

by Councillor Joyce Timpson. Membership includes Chair Anne Saltel, Joanne Peacock, Timpson, George Hoggarth, Matt Culham, Roger Gabbo and Muktar Khan. Expressing concern over climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions they base their philosophy on four tenets, re-use (don’t throw out until absolutely of no use), reduce (buy less), re-cycle (whenever

possible) and refuse (choose less packaged items over the over-packaged if possible).

Timpson shared, “There is a need to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Today’s society is one of throw away and is a major cause of environmental degradation. Garage sales, thrift shops, and curbside swaps are all based on the re-use tenet of environmental protection. By finding another user for an item,

less energy is used to produce new products and excess packaging, also an energy drainer, is eliminated.

She continued, “People seem to really like the swap. They will ask on Facebook when the next one is and when I post it there are a lot of likes. Over the years with the swap, we have ironed out a few glitches. Advising people not to put anything on the curb that day which is not for swap… a couple

of bikes were picked up unintentionally for example. I always go on Facebook afterward and ask people how it went. People usually get rid of everything they put out and people comment on the useful things that they pick up. If someone wants to save themselves a trip to the construction dump (and its cost) with unwanted goods you will be surprised how fast that stuff goes. I think it is a community event, in that it gets

people out chatting to each other and promotes easy and pleasant ways we can protect the environment.”

Fellow environmentalist Saltel concurred. “It’s the perfect balance between re-using and reducing and the price is right. I would like to see more community members participating in such a worthwhile cause.”

The next curbside swap in Sioux Lookout is scheduled for Saturday, September 27.

“WE’RE really excited and

happy about this.”That was what Pelican

Falls First Nations High School teacher Desta Buswa had to say about the community of Sioux Lookout’s response to a plea she put out for reading material for students at the school.

“I decided that we needed to get more leisure reading material into the students’ houses. I put out a call that I would be willing to buy any newer type reading materials from people and I put that on three different social media sites,” she explained.

“We had an overwhelming response from the community. We collected over 300 books. The bulk of them were free. We were able to give every student in our school a free book and all these books will then go to their house libraries. Our students

don’t have access to the Sioux Lookout Public Library like residents in town would in the sense that it isn’t within walking distance so we are trying to build up their house libraries.

“We’re so thankful to the town of Sioux Lookout for being willing to do this for us. The students have been so excited to see so many newly released books. People have donated whole series such as Twilight or The Hunger Games… the kids were really excited to receive these books,” she said.

Students were called by class to choose their books. “Some of them wanted to take their books with them immediately, but we told them to put them into their house boxes and then they could read them as soon as they got home,” Buswa stated.

Students got to pick their new books on September 4.

Grade 12 student

Kendra Wesley of Cat Lake said she was excited to pick books for herself and her housemates.

Joseph Meekis, a Grade 12 student from Deer Lake took his time deciding upon that perfect book for himself and eventually decided upon The Lost World by Michael Crichton.

Meekis said he couldn’t wait to crack the cover of his new book and thanked the community for contributing books to him and his fellow students.

Leanne Crane, a Grade 12 student from Cat Lake said she would read more if there were more books of interest to her in her house library and was grateful for the opportunity to pick some new books.

Grade 11 student Jaden Meekis of Deer Lake was thrilled to come upon on old favourite.

“I picked up Tom

Sawyer,” he shared.“I remember reading it

in Grade 8. I really liked it,” he said of the Mark Twain novel.

“Trying to get new

reading material into our houses is a huge need out here,” Buswa concluded, adding that anyone who is just hearing about the need

for books for students for the first time and has books they would like to donate can contact her at the school at 737-1110.
