I w o u l d l i k e t o c o n g r a t u l a t e Immed ia te Pas t

President Andre for a successful term of office as our Club President this past Lionistic year and I wish him every success in his new position as Zone Chairman for Zone 6. Lion Andre’s first Zone meeting held on Sat 26th at Scottburgh Lions Club ran smoothly and was well attended.

My congratulations also go to Lion Martin Rundle who was inducted as District Governor for our District. On behalf of our club I wish him every success during his term of office and we will give him our full support.

A big thank you to all members and Ladies who organised a great Induction Dinner evening. We had a fantastic turnout. Formal dinners can sometimes be very laborious but our induct ion evening f lowed smoothly with some humour and was en joyed by a l l . Wi thout mentioning any names, one raucous table needed to be put in line by PDG D e n i s d u r i n g t h e I n d u c t i o n ceremony.

I would also like to thank all those who sent out congra tu la tory messages to me for my term of office as President of Sheppie Lions.

Thanks to Lion Colin who has taken over as project leader for Lions Bingo and for organising his first bingo session on Saturday 26th July and to Lion Dale who will be convening the Lions Christmas cakes project this year

My mission for the year ahead is to increase our focus on community service and to provide leadership training for our up and coming newer members. Our first training session

held at our club on Thursday evening 31st July was unfortunately not very well attended by those who most require the training. Most who attended including visitors from Hibberdene, Ramsgate and Shelly Beach Lions are our present senior leaders of our clubs. Our aim is to direct the training towards our younger / newer members and I urge those members to make the most of these opportunities that our club is providing for you.

In closing I’m looking forward in working together with all our members and making this a joyful and successful year.

Yours in Lionism

Alastair WarmanClub President

Dear fellow Lions

Shortly after the sad passing of former President Nelson Mandela, the then Lions Clubs International President Barry Palmer decided to confer the Head of State Award on the late president.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation represent the family and all other interests. For this reason I was in constant communication with this Foundation. Due to the hectic time schedule that they were involved in, we were only able to make the presentation on 22 July 2014. I was privileged and honoured to able to present the following awards on behalf of Lions Clubs International and the Lions of Multiple District 410 in the presence of a few senior Lions. The presentation was followed by a tour of the Foundation. All in all an emotional experience for all present.

Pictures of the awards and citations are depicted below.

Kind regardsMike NewlandsImmediate Past Council Chairman

(The Citation framed below and pictured right was created by Port Shepstone Lion Denis Meyer)

One of Club President Alastair’s goals for this Lionistic Year is to promote leadership development within the Club, especially amongst the newer members. To this end Lion Rob Bing, a certified Lions Trainer and the Club’s Training Officer, is compiling a training program and presented his first workshop on Thursday 31st July at the Port

Shepstone Lions’ Den.

The workshop dealt mainly with leadership roles within the Club’s Board of Directors and project sub-committees. Representatives from the Hibberdene, Shelly Beach and Ramsgate Lions Clubs were also in attendance and we were privileged to have both our District Global Leadership Team Leader, Lion Lyn Botha (Cowies Hill Lions) and our District Global Membership Team Leader Past Council Chairman Paul Brauteseth (Shelly Beach Lions) present at the workshop. Unfortunately most of those who attended were already past leaders of our organisation, however their input and discussions made the workshop interesting and several great ideas were shared amongst those who attended.

The Club will continue to host these workshops whenever the opportunity arises and Lion President Alastair also plans to introduce a 15 minute training segment during each Club General Meeting.

he 1st Zone 6 Meeting of the 2014/2015 Lionistic Year was held at the Scottburgh Library Activities Room in Scottburgh on

TSaturday 26th July. The meeting was well attended by members from 5 of the 6 Clubs within the Zone.

The Importance of attending Zone Meetings :

Inter-club cooperation and understanding, sharing of ideas, training of all members and inter-club fellowship. The Zone chairman, Club Presidents and club secretaries of the clubs in the zone form the District Governor’s Advisory Committee. The Zone Chairman is the committee chairperson. This committee advises the Zone Chairman about matters within the zone and makes recommendations on matters affecting all clubs in the District. The Zone Chairman shares the recommendations with the District Governor and District Cabinet. The committee meets at least three times annually. A fourth meeting, if held, could be an occasion to honor present or past club officers. The committee meetings provide an opportunity for the Zone Chairman to promote and encourage unity among clubs in the zone. The clubs exchange ideas about club operations and management during the meetings as well as projects, activities and fundraisers. The committee’s responsibilities are to:

! Assist the Zone Chairman in making sure that every club operates efficiently and follows the Association’s constitution and by-laws

and policies;! Promote attendance at the District and Multiple district conventions;! Promote attendance during charter nights within the zone;! Discuss ways of helping clubs that need assistance with membership growth or leadership development;! Promote various club functions such as inter-club meetings, installation of club officers, induction of new members, ceremonies

honoring Key Award recipients and other club events.

n Wednesday 30th July, Lion Alec Sammon handed over

O6 bags of clothing to the Fountain of One Life Mission on

behalf of the Port Shepstone Lions. This mission is

situated at the premises of the old Umtentweni Hotel and houses

homeless and destitute families.

Without the support of organisations such a Lions, these people

would have absolutely nothing. Sheppie Lion Jean Masson has

also kindly agreed to transport truck loads of building rubble to

the Mission which will assist them with planned renovations.

istrict Governor Martin Rundle’s theme, “A Light in

Dthe Dark” is an extract from "A Season of Hope" by Solly Ozrovech with reference to 2 Peter 1 :19.

The theme can also be associated with James A. Michener’s "an age is called Dark, not because the Light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it!”The Services provided by Lions to those in need is depicted as a shining light for people experiencing dark, desperate times.

The Lighthouse is a photograph of the Port Shepstone Lighthouse, installed on 10 March 1905. The Port Shepstone lighthouse was developed out of a signal station, which was used during the time that Port Shepstone was an operating Harbour. The signal Station was replaced by the present cast iron structure of the lighthouse in 1906. This structure came from higher up the coast, Scottburgh, where it had been used to mark the southern end of that famous hidden reef, the Aliwal Shoal. Before these developments an ordinary ships masthead lantern was exhibited at the top of a ladder like structure and came into operation in 1895.The lighthouse is painted in black and white cheques has become a familiar landmark to people who visit Port Shepstone, which is approximately a 1 hour drive South of Durban. The coastline running south from this beacon is notorious for its wrecks, in fact this stretch of coastline between Port Shepstone and Cape Hermes at Port St Johns is particularly dangerous. Probably the most famous of these wrecks are the Sao Joao and the Grosvenor. The Sao Joao, a richly laden Portuguese Galleon was wrecked with its alleged riches have never been located. The Grosvenor sank beneath the waves off the Pondoland shore with her hoard which legend insists included jewels, gold and silver bars and some say the fabulous Peacock Throne of the Moguls believed to be worth well over 6 Million Pounds.Razor sharp rocks, strong currents, pounding surf and inaccessibility to this wreck has put paid to recovering any treasures that might lie beneath the murky waters.
