1 . W H AT I S GO D ’S AN O IN T I N G?

I t is know ing the supernatural presence of God upon us. I tis being aw are of H is presence w ith us. I w ould describe it asan actual physical experience when we feel the warm presenceand glow of God upon our body. I t is like a signal that Godsends to us saying that H e is show ing H is presence to us, thatH e is w ith us and approves of w hat w e are saying or do ing.W ith the anointing of G od there is also the pow er and healingof God.

2 . JESU S CH RI ST K N EW T H E A N O IN T I N G OF GOD

...how God anointed Jesus of N azareth w ith the H oly Spirit and

with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God w as w ith H im . (Acts 10:38)

This descr ibes how Jesus Chr is t min is tered wi th theanointing of God. H e w as anointed wi th the H oly Spir it andwith power and was thus able under that anointing to do goodand heal all who were oppressed by the devil.

3 . TH E SECRET O F TH E AN O I N TI N G

The secret of knowing the anointing of God is completeobedience to H is w il l. T hus w e hear Jesus saying:

And H e who sent M e is with M e. The Father has not left M e alone, for I always do those things that please H im.

(John 8:29)

Jesus Chr ist alw ays knew the anointing o f G od because H ealways did the things that pleased God. We find that com pleteobedience to the will of G od i s the hallm ark of H is m ini stry.

4 . W ITH TH E AN OI N TI N G OF GOD COM ES G O D ’ S H E A L I N G

In the Gospels we have a clear picture of the anointing ofGod and the healing power of God. I n M ark’s Gospel we readthe story of the woman who had a flow of blood for 12 years.She had suffered many things from many physicians and spentall she had and was no better but rather grew worse.

W hen she heard about Jesus, she came behind H im in the crowd

and touched H is garment. For she said, “ I f only I may touch H is clothes, I shall be made w ell.” I mmediately the fountain of her blood w as dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. A nd Jesus, im mediately know ing in H im self that

power had gone out of H im, turned around in the crowd and said,“ W ho touched M y clothes?” But H is disciples said to H im, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, W ho touched M e?’"

And H e looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before H im and told H im the whole truth.And H e said to her, “D aughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” (M ark 5:27-34)

Jesus Christ always knew the anointing of God and when it

w as falli ng aro und H im . H e sensed im m ediately that som eperson w as reachi ng o ut to H im and h ad drawn on thatano inting. H e could sense w hen it had happened and henceH e was able to say, “ W ho touched m y clothes?” although somany people w ere touching H im .

M any tim es I have been in a meeting w hen I have sensedthe anointing of God falling like a show er from heaven. A s the

w arm th of the H oly Spi ri t has fallen around m e I have realisedthat som ebo dy has reached out to G od and that H is healingpower is touching their body. I remember one occasion whenI was teaching on the anointing and a woman sitting in thefront row of the meeting suffering from a stroke was instantlyhealed. A s she beli eved th e w o rds of Scri pt ur e and theteaching on the anoin ting, the H oly Spi ri t w as able to touchher. I felt the surge of the anointing falli ng and as I looked I

saw her face and her body straightening as God’s healing powerm ani fested thr ou gho ut her bo dy. She stoo d up com pletelyhealed from her stroke.

Thus we see Jesus saying to the woman who was healedfrom the flow of blood:

“ D aughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” (M ark 5:34)

5 . RAI SI N G FRO M TH E D EAD

Such w as the anointing w ith Jesus Christ that H e knew H ewas able to raise the dead. We see H im taking the dead chi ldby the hand and saying to her:

“ Talitha, cum i,” which is translated, “ L ittle gir l, I say to you,arise.” I mmediately the girl arose and w alked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement.(M ark 5:41-42)

6 . W H EN D ID TH I S AN OI N TI N G CO M E UPON JESUS?

Jesus Chri st did no t com mence H is m in istry un til H e w asabout 30 years of age. H e did so immediately follow ing H is

w ater baptism at which the H oly Spi rit came upon H im like adove. M any w ou ld say that thi s w as w hen H e w as baptisedw ith the H oly Spirit.

W hen H e had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to H im, and H e saw the Spiri t of God descending l ike a dove and alighting upon H im . And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “ This is M y beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (M atthew 3:16-17)

We notice that H e was obedient to G od, being led by theH oly Spi ri t into the w ilderness to b e tem pted by the devil.T here H e fasted fo r ty d ays and fo r ty n igh ts befor e H istem ptation . Fo llo w ing that experience H e began to pr eachand say:

“ Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (M atthew 4:17)

H e w ent abo ut all Gali lee, teachin g i n th eir synago gues,preaching the Gospel of the K ingdom and healing all kinds ofsickness and di seases am ong the people. T hus H e w as ableto say:

“The Spir it of the L ORD is upon M e,Because H e has anointed M e To preach the gospel to the poor; H e has sent M e to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind,To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the L ORD .” (L uke 4:18-19)

Because G od had anoin ted H im , that is em po w ered andset H im apart for the work of the m inistry, then the Spi ri t ofthe L ord God was upon H im . I t w as that anoin ting w hichenabled H im to p reach the good tid ings to the poor, to healthe broken-hearted, proclaim l iberty to the capt ives, the

opening of the prison to those who are bound and to preachthe acceptable year o f the L or d.

A nd they were astonished at H is teaching, for H is word was w ith author ity. (L uke 4:32)

The demons began to cry out with a loud voice saying:

“ L et us alone! W hat have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? D id You come to destroy us? I know who You are - the H oly O ne of God!” (Luke 4:34)

M any w ere healed:

W hen the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to H im; and H e laid H is hands on every one of them and healed them. (L uke 4:40)

and demons also came out of many:

A nd demons also came out of m any, crying out and saying,“You are the Christ, the Son of God!” And H e, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that H e was the Chr ist.(Luke 4:41)

Therefore we conclude that the anointing of God, that isthe presence of th e H oly Spi ri t upon H im , w as an essentialprerequisite to the ministry of Jesus Christ.

7 . CAN TH I S AN O IN T I N G BE Q U EN CH ED ?

Yes. We find that w hen Jesus came in to H is ow n country,those w ho knew H im w ere offended at H im so that H e could

do no mighty w ork there w ith the exception that H e laid H ishands on a few sick people and healed them:

N ow H e could do no mighty work there, except that H e laid H is hands on a few sick people and healed them. (M ark 6:5)

It was the unbelief of the people which prevented themfrom receiving prayer for healing. T heir unbelief stopped themgoing forward for healing and hence they missed out on whatGod could have done through Jesus in healing them.

It is that same unbelief today which prevents many peoplecom ing forw ard and receiving a mighty healing. W hen peopleare prepared to believe that the H oly Spi ri t is w ith them asthey are being prayed for in healing or deliverance, then theanointing of God can fall. I t is that anointing w hich breaks theyoke o f sickn ess or demon ic activi ty. I t is G od ’s pr esencemanifest in a sovereign manner that destroys the bondagesun der w hi ch people are labo ur in g. I t is the m agni f icentpresence of God H im self.

8 . SH O U L D W E EXPECT TO K N OW TH AT S A M E A N O I N T I N G ?

Yes. T he Scripture says that the beli ever has an ano intingfrom the H oly O ne and know s all things:

But you have an anointing from the H oly O ne, and you know all things. (1 John 2:20)

T his is an amazing statement. Fi rst it says that we have ananointing. T he essential requi rement for having that anointingis to believe that you do have an anointing. T he second partof the statem ent says that w e know all th in gs. I t is clear ly

referring to all things spiritual and as we know the anointingof God and know H is presence, then w e have a supernaturalknowledge of things spiritual and a discernment and giftingwhich the world cannot know.

Further confirmation that we have the anointing of Godcomes from 1 John 2:27:

But the anointing which you have received from H im abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you w ill abide in H im .(1 John 2:27)

The teaching which is re ferred to here is not man’s

know ledge, it i s the know ledge that comes only from the H olySpi r i t w ho teaches us. W hen w e have the pr esence of theH oly Spi ri t upon us, w e have supernatural know ledge and donot need anybody to teach us about the ano inting. I t is theano in ting o f the H ol y Spir it th at teaches us concern in g allthings of the Spirit and through whom we know the gifts of theH oly Spi ri t, that is:

the gift of the Word of Wisdom ,the gift of the Word of Knowledge ,the gift of Faith ,the gift of H ealing ,the working of M iracles ,the gift of Prophecy ,th e D iscern i ng o f Sp i r i ts ,

kinds of Tongues ,an d I n te rp re ta t i on o f Tongues

I t is the anointing through the H oly Spir it w hich opens tous all of the Scriptures and teaches us from the Scripturesconcerning all things.

9 . H OW D O W E CO M E TO K N OW TH I S A N O I N T I N G ?

First of all, we must understand the scriptural backgroundof the ano in ting. T he ano in ting in the O ld Testam ent was aph ysical ano in ting w ith oi l. God gave M oses the recip e tomake up the oil with which the Tabernacle of Meeting, the Ark

of the Testimony and all the utensils in the tabernacle wereto be set apart or sanctifi ed. T he pr iests w ere sim ilarly to beset apart by the use of this anointing o il. T he making up ofthe oil is described in Exodus 30:22-30:

M oreover the L O RD spoke to M oses, saying: “ A lso take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of l iquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon ( two hundred and fifty shekels),

two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. I t shall be a holy anointing oi l. W ith i t you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils,the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering w ith all i ts utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to M e as priests.” (Exodus30:22-30)

I n due course M oses fu lfi lled these com m andm ents as w esee in the book o f L eviti cus.

Also M oses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. H e sprinkled som e of it on the altar seven times, anointed the altar and all its utensils,and the laver and its base, to consecrate them. A nd he poured som e of the anointing oi l on A aron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. (L evi ticus 8:10-12)

Thus it was that the tabernacle, all that was in it, the altar,the utensils and Aaron himself were set apart to the service ofGod by the anointing with oil.

In due course the sons of Aaron were also anointed becausethey were part of the priesthood:

Then M oses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on A aron, on his garments,

on his sons, and on the garm ents of his sons w ith him; and he consecrated A aron, his garments, his sons, and the garments of his sons w ith him. (L evi ticus 8:10-12)

10 . SETTI N G APART FOR SERV I CE

T he anointing of God means being set apart for H is service.

We find that not only were priests such as Aaron and hissons set aside for the service of God by having the anointingoil poured upon them, but also the same happened with kings.Thus we find that Samuel anointed Saul:

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “ I s it not because the L ORD has anointed you com mander over H is inheri tance? (1 Samuel 10:1)

Saul was thus set apar t as commander over God’sinheritance am ong H is peop le, I srael.

T he sam e happened w ith D avid w hen God chose him tobe K ing of I srael. A gain , Sam uel took the ho rn of oil andanointed him:

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst

of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon D avid from that day forw ard. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.( 1 Samuel 16:13)

We find that in the case of Saul, because of his disobedienceto God, the Spi ri t of the L ord departed from him and insteadof the H oly Spir it, a distressing spi ri t from God troubled Saul:

But the Spirit of the L ORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spi ri t from the L O RD troubled him . (1 Samuel 16:14)

This event had happened because Saul had disobeyed Godand b r ok en H i s com m andm ents. B ecause o f t hatdisobedience, God tore the K ingdom of I srael from Saul andgave it to D avid. We realise that continued obedience to Godis an essential element of knowing God’s anointing.

1 1 . K I N G SO L OM O N

A s K ing D avid w as dying, he gave instructions for his son,Solomon, to be anointed K ing over I srael. A gain w e see thesame procedure of the anointing, signifying setting apart forGod’s service.

Then Z adok the priest took a horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, and all the people said,“ L ong live K ing Solomon!” (1 K ings 1:39)

12 . T H E A N O I N T I N G O F JEH U A S K I N G OF ISRAEL

We find that Elijah was instructed to anoint three people,nam ely H azael as K ing o ver Syr ia, Jehu as K ing o ver I sraeland Elisha the son of Shaphat as Prophet in the place of Elijah:

Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of N imshi as king over I srael.And Elisha the son of Shaphat of A bel M eholah you shall anoint as

prophet in your place. I t shall be that whoever escapes the sword of H azael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha

will kill. (1 K ings 19:16-17)

We see the fulfilment of the anointing of Jehu in the bookof 2 K ings:

And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets,and said to him, “ Get yourself ready, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth Gilead. N ow w hen you arr ive at that

place, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of N imshi,and go in and make him rise up from among his associates, and take him to an inner room. Then take the flask of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, ‘T hus says the L O RD : “ I have anointed you king over I srael.” ‘ Then open the door and flee, and do not delay.” (2 K ings 9:1-3)

Following his anointing, Jehu acted with mighty power on

behalf of God in destroying God’s enemies.

13 . SIM IL ARLY JOASH WAS AN OIN TED K IN G OF JUDAH

And he brought out the king’s son, put the crow n on him, and gave him the Testimony; they made him king and anointed him,and they clapped their hands and said, “ L ong live the king!”

(2 K ings 11:12)

A nd again, Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, w as anointed K ingin his father’s place:

Then his servants moved his body in a chariot from M egiddo,brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his ow n tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, anointed

him, and m ade him king in his father’s place. (2 K ings 23:30)

14 . A CLEAR PATTERN FROM TH E O L D T E S T A M E N T

We therefore conclude that there is a clear pattern fromthe Old Testament of the anointing of priests, prophets andkings, such anointing being with the oil made according tothe recipe which God gave to M oses and w hich is referred toin Exodus 30:22-30 quoted earlier.

This anointing with oil was a sanctification or setting apartof the person for God’s service. I t was a clear demonstrationof the purpose of God in the setting aside of persons andthin gs for H is pu rp ose. I f the person disobeyed God, then

they were no longer under that anointing.

A Song of A scents. O f D avid.Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dw ell together in unity! I t is like the precious oil upon the head,Running down on the beard,

The beard of Aaron,Running dow n on the edge of his garments.I t is like the dew of H ermon,D escending upon the mountains of Z ion; For there the L ORD commanded the blessing— L ife forevermore. (Psalm 133)

Thus the unity of the brethren is compared with the holy

anointing oi l .

16 . W H AT A BO U T T H E BEL I EV E RS?

(a) We live under the N ew Testament or N ew covenant andhave been called to God by H is grace. We no lo ngerlive under the law but under the grace of God. H owever,the illustrations and types from the Old Testament are

clearly applicable to us as believers today.(b) A s w e have seen from the Scriptures (1 John 2:20 and 1

Jo hn 2 :27) w e are ano i nted. We h ave recei ved ananointing. Paul also confi rm s this in his second letter tothe Corinthians:

N ow H e who establishes us with you in Christ and has

anointed us is God, (2 Corinthians 1:21)

H ere w e are clear ly to ld th at God has bo th establ ishedus and anointed us (set us apart in Christ).

( c) H o w do es th is h ap pen?By being born again. Jesus said that unless one is bornagain he cannot see the K ingdom of God.

Jesus answered and said to him, “ M ost assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)

W hen N icodemus questioned H im as to how a man couldbe born when he is old and enter a second time into hismother’s womb, Jesus replied saying:

“M ost assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.(John 3:5)

In order to be born again we must turn from our sins,confess that Jesus Chri st is the Son of the L iv ing G od,com e to H im as a little child and ask H im to be our L ord

and Saviou r. We need to confess w ith our m ou th and

believe in our heart that Jesus Christ has risen from thedead. We must fo l l ow the com m andm ents of Go d,namely to love the Lord our God with all our heart, withall our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength,to love our neighbour as ourselves and to love oneanother as Jesus Christ loved us. A s w e do these things,the H oly Spi ri t dw ells w ith in us and w e are set aside,that is sanctif ied and anointed of God. We are called tothe service of God in the same way as the kings, priestsand prophets of the Old Testament were called to thatservice.

(d) We are pr iests and kings:

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, H is ow n special people, that you may proclaim the praises of H im who called you out of darkness into H is marvellous light; (1 Peter 2:9)

and has made us kings and priests to H is God and Father,to H im be glory and dominion forever and ever. A men.(Revelation 1:6)

From these Scr iptures we can clear ly see that thebeliever is called to be a king and a priest in the K ingdomof God.

(e) W i ll God therefore anoint us?Yes, because we are called to be kings and priests andare set aside for the service of God, then God’s anointing

will come upon us in the same way as it did upon Jesus

Chr ist. I n the Old Testament the anointing was a physicalexperience as we have seen, that is by the oil made upof specific ingredients (Exodus 30:22-30) being pouredup on the k in gs, pr iests and pro ph ets. I n the N ewCovenant, how ever, the oi l is not a physical oi l. T he holyoi l i s the H oly Spir i t of Go d w hich com es upo n thebe l iever :

For you did not receive the spiri t of bondage again to fear,but you received the Spir it of adoption by whom we cry out,“Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)

W hen we com e to Jesus Christ w e receive the H oly Spi ri tof adoption. I t is the H oly Spir it which anoints us andsets us apart for the service of God.

17 . TH E H OLY SPIRI T I S A PERSON

H e is not an “ it” but a person. Jesus said H e w ould sendthe H oly Spir it.

“ N evertheless I tell you the truth. I t is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the H elper will not come to you; but

if I depart, I will send H im to you. And when H e has come, H e will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in M e; of righteousness, because I go to M y Father and you see M e no m ore; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. H owever, when H e, the Spirit of truth, has come, H e will guide you into all truth; for H e will not speak on H is own authority, but w hatever H e hears H e will speak;

and H e w ill tell you things to com e.” (John 16:7-13)

18 . BAPT ISM WI TH TH E H OLY SPIR IT

A n essential aspect to know ing the pow er of the H oly Spi ri tis to be baptised wi th the H oly Spi ri t. A fter H is resurrection

H e breathed on H is disciples so that they received the H olySpir i t :

And w hen H e had said this, H e breathed on them, and said to them, “ Receive the H oly Spir it.” (John 20:22)

Jesus Chr ist then told H is disciples to w ait i n Jerusalem untilthey received the promise of the Father:

“ Behold, I send the Promise of M y Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued w ith pow er from on high.” (L uke 24:49)

This command was repeated in Acts chapter 1:

And being assembled together with them, H e commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to w ait for the Promise of the

Father, “ which,” H e said, “ you have heard from M e.” (Acts 1:4)

Peter explained that, having been exalted to the right handof God, Jesus Christ had received from the Father the promiseof the H oly Spir it w hich H e had poured out. T his w as theexplanation of the events on the day of Pentecost:

Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the H oly Spirit, H e poured

out this which you now see and hear. (Acts 2:33)

I believe that if we really want to know the full anointing ofGod we must be obedient to this commandment of Jesus Christand receive the whole promise of the Father by being baptisedw ith the H oly Spirit.

I f you w ish to be baptised w ith the H oly Spiri t, I suggestyou say a simple prayer like this as you are upon your knees:

“ D ear H eavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, Irenounce all my sins (name those sins) and I especiallyrenounce all involvement in the occult or witchcraft onmy own part or on the part of my parents or my ancestors.I renounce all fear and unbelief and any blockage of mymind. I ask You L ord Jesus to baptise me w ith the H olySpiri t .”

You m ay be standing or kneeling. I t is good to close oureyes and think of Jesus seated at the right hand of God, readyto pour out the Promise of the Father upon us. A s w e quietlyw ait upon H im and allow H im to do this, we begin to sensethe peace of G od. We should not listen to w hat we are sayingbut let God give us a new language.

19 . W E M U ST D O SO M ET H I N G God w ill not force us to do anything. Accordingly, when we

are expecting to receive the gift of tongues which accompaniesthe baptism w ith the H oly Spi ri t, w e should b e like a l itt lechild and open our mouths and speak out w ords. I f necessaryw e can start w ith w ords w hich w e make up. A s w e do so, thecord between our mind and tongue is cut and our mind no

longer contro ls all the w ords that come onto our tongues. A swe become like a little child and are fools for Jesus Christ,making baby-like sounds and continuing to have our heartdirected tow ard G od, the H oly Spir i t w i l l come upo n ourtongue and will give us the gift of a new language.

2 0 . T H E A N O I N T I N G I S FO R T O DAY

We find in the Old Testament that the kings, the priestsand the prophets were anointed with oil which had a particularfragrance of cassia, myrrh etc and in this way they were setaside for the service of God. A s they received this ano in ting,the pow er o f Go d cam e upo n them by the H oly Spir it andthey were able to carry out great deeds by showing the powerof Go d to H is people. We have already seen fro m 1 Joh n

2:20& 27 that the believer has the same anointing by w hich weknow all things through the pow er of the H oly Spiri t.

We have read of the anointing oil being poured down onthe head of Aaron and over his beard. Clearly he w ould havefelt that oi l as it was poured upon him. I n the same w ay thebeliever can f eel th e ano in ting oi l o f the H ol y Spir i t as i tdescends upon him. T hi s experience is for today.

2 2 . H O W TO K N O W GO D ’S A N OI N T I N G

(a) Surrender absolutely to the L ordship of Jesus Chri st.(b) Believe the Word of God in i ts entirety.(c) I f you have never received any form of w ater bapt ism,

ensure that you are baptised in water, thus identifying

w ith Jesus Chr ist in H is death and in H is resurrection.(d) Repent f rom al l sin , especial ly unbel ief , doubt , fear,

things of the occult, unforgiveness, blockage of mind,wrong doctrine.

I renounce all sin , everything of the occult,al l unbelief, al l fear, al l doubt, wrong doctrine,blockage of mind. T hese I renounce in the nam eof Jesus Chr ist and I ask You L ord to let me knowthat anointing which You have already given meby the H oly Spi ri t. I confess that Jesus Chr ist isrisen from the dead.

(h) I f you w ill do this w ith all your heart, then you will sensethe peace of God coming around you and you will feelthe physical w arm th of the H oly Spir it descending uponyour body. You w ill know for a certainty the anointing ofGod as a physical presence of God upon your body. A sthe love of God begins to be shed abroad in your heartby the H oly Spi ri t, you w ill feel the physical presence ofGod around you or on some part of your body.

(i) D o not be in a hurry. Wait upon the L ord and as you restin H is presence you w i l l i ncreasingly know H is lovearound you.

(j) Pray for others and serve them in the love of the L ord.(k) Be prepared to w i tness abou t Jesus Ch r i st at every

opportun ity. A s you do so, you w ill know the presenceof God increasingly in your l i fe and know a greateranoint ing.

( l) L earn about the min istry o f del iverance and know theauthority that Jesus Christ has given you to cast out

demons and heal the sick.

We need to put into practice w hat we have learnt. T he mosteffective w ay is to begin to pray for o thers and serve the L ordw ith all our heart. T he Scripture says:

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down,shaken together, and running over w ill be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. (L uke 6:38)

A s w e ob ey the L or d and seek to bless oth ers, then Godwill bless us mightily.

Often we do not feel like doing something to help others,but as the H oly Spir it convicts us and encourages us to do so,

then the Spiri t of God w ill come upon us mightily. Som etimesI go to a meeting without feeling much desire to pray for others,but as I begin to obey the L ord, p reach the Word and alsopray for the sick, the anointing comes upon me.

I n the same way, as you see another person in need and goand help them and pray for them, then you will increasinglyknow G od’s anointing. T his is the secret of the anoin ting ofGod, that is serving others in the name of Jesus Christ andbeing a wi lling instrum ent in H is hands.

The anointing is not something for us to enjoy privately orto tell others how much of the anointing we have received.The primary purpose of the anointing is for service and as weobey the L ord and serve others in the name of the L ord, thenthat anointing will flow mightily.

2 4 . T H E A N O I N T I N G BREA K S T H E YO K E

We are clearly told from Scripture that the yoke will bedestroyed because of the anointing oil:

It shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder,

And his yoke from your neck,And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

(Isaiah 10:27)

I t is this anointing of God, the sense of H is presence uponour bodies, which breaks the yoke of sickness, disease anddepressio n. I t causes demon ic po w ers to flee.

2 5. BL O CK A GES T O T H E A N O I N T I N G

Sometimes I find that, despite every effort on their part toknow this physical presence of God called the anointing, thatbelievers still have a problem in sensing that presence.

The following points can be blockages to the anointing:

(a) Fai lure to repent of al l sin.(b) Fai lure to renounce unbel ief , doubt, and fear.

(c) Failure to renounce any spirit of blockage of m ind. O ftenwe can inherit such a spirit from our parents because oftheir unbelief. A lternatively, such a spi ri t can com e uponus when we have a strong intellectual background andtend to rely on our intellectual understanding rather than

trust the L or d abso lu tely. I n such cases I encouragepeople to renounce every such spirit of blockage of mind.

(d) Fear of the unknown.

( e) I gnorance of God’s Word and H is promises.

(f) Failure to honour and respect our mother and father andforgive them. I n such a case w e should go on our knees

and honour our mother and father, renounce their sinsand the s ins of our ancestors, especial ly any pastinvolvement in the occult, and claim deliverance fromevery curse of the law through the Cross of Jesus Christ.We are told in Galatians:

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for i t is wri tten, “ Cursed is everyone

who hangs on a tree” ) (Galatians 3:13)

That is why we should especia l ly renounce anyinvolvement in such occult ic orders of wi tchcraft asFreemasonry, D ruids L odge etc which block the anointingunless they are renounced. Past involvement in any formof the occult will, unless renounced, block the anointing.

(g). Wrong doctrine. T hat is w hy we should read our Bible

each day and ensure we read it right through from time totime so we have a complete understanding of the Wordof God.

If, after having read this booklet, you still do not know theanointing of God, I would counsel you to go through the occultcheck list, Appendix 1, and put a circle around anything inwhich you may have been involved and specifically renounce

it in the name of Jesus Chr ist. You should do this w ith all ofyour heart. T hi s w il l rem ove any blockages caused by pastinvolvement in these things.

2 6 . O CCA SI O N S O F GO D ’S A N O I N T I N G

(a) BY THE WORD OF GOD

I f we are to know God’s anoint ing regular ly andconstantly, we must be a disciplined reader of the Wordof G od. We should set aside part of each day for thi spurpose, preferably first thing in the morning. We shou ldregularly read part of the Old Testament as well as theN ew Testament. We should ask the L ord to teach us bythe H oly Spir it from H is Word and to enligh ten som epart of the Word for us for each day. We must confess

any doubt or unbelief that we have concerning the Word

of God. T he H oly Spir it w ill from time to time show us aScripture which we should learn from memory and as wedo this it can act as a break-through to the anointing ofG o d .

(b) PRAISE AND WORSHIP W here there has been p raise and w or shi p fr om the

heart to God it is very common for the anointing to besensed. We sho uld enter H is courts w ith praise and asw e do so and w orship G od, H e makes H is presence felt.It is not uncommon on such occasions, either duringpraise or worship or in preaching, for the anointing tofall upon some person or persons in the gathering andfor them to receive their healing.

(c) SALVATION The time when I know the strongest anointing of God

in a m eeting is w hen I m ake an altar call. A s peoplecome forward to give their lives to Jesus Christ in publicand confess H is name, I sense a pow erful ano in ting fallupon the meeting. W ith the physical presence of God,the w ind of the H oly Spiri t often comes sw eeping through

the meeting. M any tim es I have seen people fall underthe anointing without anybody touching them and othershave been healed instantly as that anointing of God hasfallen upon them. I t is w onderfu l to beho ld the pow erof God. Recently, as the ano in ting fell on a meeting, Iwatched a man go rigid, his facial expression change anda powerful demon manifested out of his mouth beforehe w as set free. T he demons cannot stand the anointing

of God!

( d) WH EN TH ERE IS H EAL I N G AN D D EL I VERANCE FROM D E M O N S

W hen the signs fol low ing a ministry are occurring suchas physical and emotional healing, demons are beingcast out and other N ew Testament occurrences are takingplace, then the power of God’s anointing falls continuallyin such a situation.

I find that when I am praying for the sick, that I shouldw ait upon the L ord for the anointing to fall. U sually Iwait before I start praying and as I focus my mind uponthe L ord and H is love for me and allow that love to flowupon the person for whom I am praying, then I begin tosense the warmth of God flowing upon me and onto theperson.

Sometimes, when we are praying for the sick, we feelthe anoint ing come upon us but we sense i t is nottouching the person for w hom w e are praying. T hat iswhy we must encourage that person in to absoluterepentance in every area of their lives. A s w e w ait uponthe L ord, H e w il l reveal to us the reason w hy that personis not sensing the anointing be it unbelief, fear, sin orwhatever.

In the radio ministry in which I am involved, I waitupon the Lord before I pray for each person and manyof those listening feel the anointing of God falling uponthem. ( e) TESTIMONY W hen som ebo dy i s t est i f y i ng concern in g G od ’ s

dealings in their life or of their healing or deliverance,an anointing will frequently fall upon the meeting.

(f) PREACH IN G TH E WORD W hen the preacher b elieves from hi s heart th e Word

of God and know s the pow er of the H oly Spi rit in h is life,part icularly through the baptism w ith the H oly Spi ri t ,then it is common for the anointing to fall in the meetingas he pr eaches. T he pr eacher w il l him self kno w th atanointing as he reads from the Scriptures and preachesthe Word. I t is as though he is receiving direction fromGod. M any tim es as I preach or teach, I feel the anointing

fall as though the L ord is saying, “ Yes, that is ri ght, youare saying the truth, the right thing to M y people.” I t islike a radio signal to the pi lot of an aircraft. A s he hearsthe beep of the signal he knows he is on the right path.Similarly, as we preach the Word of God and teach inaccordance with that Word, we should from time to timefeel that anointing fall upon us, confirming that we areteaching in accordance w ith God’s w ill . T his is another

way in which that same anointing teaches us concerningall things.

(g) USING THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT W hen the pr eacher i s op erat ing in the w or d o f

knowledge, the word of wisdom or discernment of spiritsand the peopl e sense the H ol y Spi ri t’s pow er pr esent,then the anointing of God falls.

(h) PRAYER AN D FASTI N G M any tim es dur ing pr ayer and fasting the ano in ting

of God can be felt.

( i) WA L K ING IN THE WIL L OF GOD W hen all our thoughts and actions are centred on God

through Jesus Chr ist and w e are seeking to fol low H is

will, whether it be in the work place or elsewhere, wecan frequently sense the ano in ting of God upo n us. Ioften found during my business and legal career, when Imade a right decision that was pleasing to God, I felt theanointing of God fall upon me as though to say, “Youhave made the right decision.”

( j) WH EN TWO OR M ORE A RE GA TH ERED IN TH E NA M E O F JESU S CH RI ST W hen there is a gatheri ng of person s com m itted to

the L or dshi p o f Jesus Chr ist or w ho are seeking suchcommitment and who begin to put aside all doubt, fearand unbelief, then the anointing of God fal ls on thegathering. T hi s is particularl y so at w eekend sem in arswhere people have been gathering together over the

course of a day or two and have been living together inthe same or adjacent premises.

As fel lowship grows and the people l isten to thepreaching and teaching given by an anointed teacher,then the power of God can literally be felt in the place.

(k) R E P E N T A N C E A s w e have already seen, the ano in ting o f the H oly

Spirit seems to flow most strongly in meetings when

there is true repentance in the act of salvation. I t is anattitu de of r epentance tow ard s G od that enables H imto anoint us afresh with the pow er of H is H oly Spir it. Irecall one meeting where there was a large number ofyoung peop le p resent and as I ca l led them torepentance, many fell on their knees before God andconfessed their sins. A t that mom ent the mighty w ind ofthe Spirit entered the building and the anointing of Godfell. A fterw ards many commented how they could sensea battle going on between the forces of good and evil asthe H oly Spir it invaded the place w ith such ano in ting .As the anointing fel l upon the meeting, many peoplewere instantly healed miraculously of various complaintswhile demons came out of others, making loud noises

and scream s. N obo dy present cou ld deny that therehad been a migh ty visitation of God. A s a result of thismeeting and the power manifested in it, many peoplecame to know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.

27 . FRAGRAN CE OF TH E H OLY SPIRIT

In every Christian gathering to which I speak, I expect tosmell the fragrance of the H oly Spi ri t. You recall reading fromExodus 30:22-30 that the holy anointing oil was made of variousingredients such as cassia, myrrh and sweet smelling cane.There was therefore a definite fragrance to that oil.

We find from Scripture that the same fragrance is upon thegarments of Jesus Christ:

Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You W ith the oil of gladness more than Your companions.All Your garments are scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,O ut of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.

(Psalm 45:6-8)

We are promised that where two or three are gatheredtogether in the name of Jesus, H e is in the midst of them:

“ For w here two or three are gathered together in M y name, I am there in the midst of them.” (M atthew 18:20)

I believe from experience and from Scripture that Jesusloves to m ani fest H im self in our presence and one of the w aysin w hich H e does so i s through the fragrant arom a upon H isgarm ents. I r ecall one m eeting in whi ch an unsaved personcame forward for salvation and in the counsell ing room hesaid he had never been in such a meeting. H e thought thatthe singing was wonderful and the prayers were good, but hetold the counsellor that he just loved the perfume with which

they spr ayed the hal l ! I have kno w n peop le to go frommeetings smelling this fragrance around them for several daysbefore they have realised i t w as the fragrance of the H oly Spir it.They have subsequently gone to a further meeting and beensaved. I t is a powerful w itness of God’s presence upon us.

Some peop le ques t ion the Scr ip tu res in th i s regard .H owever, I accept these Scrip tures w ithou t questio n. T hose

of us involved in the deliverance ministry know only too well

the horr ib le s tench that accompanies demons on manyoccasions. A s demons are being cast out of people the stenchoften sur ro unds us. T hu s w e rejoi ce to know the beauti fulfragrance of the H oly Spir it w hich comes upon us as w e gathertog ether in the nam e o f Jesus C hri st. T he fr agr ance thatsur ro unds the believer is a w itness of H is presence w ith thebeliever. T hi s is how w e are separated from th e w or ld. Ibelieve also that the same fragrance from the Spirit of Godcan be among the believers when they gather in the name ofJesus and that this is a further expression of the meaning ofthe Scripture:

N ow thanks be to God w ho always leads us in triumph in Christ,and through us diffuses the fragrance of H is knowledge in every

place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.(2 Corinthians 2:14-15)

2 8. W E N EED T H E AN O I N TI N G

If there was ever a time when we needed the anointing ofG od it is now. I n the sam e w ay as Jesus C hr i st did no t

com mence H is m inistry until the H oly Spirit came upon H imand ano in ted H im for serv ice, so w e need the ful l pow er o fthe H oly Spi ri t in our lives and this sam e anoi nting . Fro mmany years experience in the healing and deliverance ministry,I have concluded that the greatest miracles of healing that Ihave seen have been where there has been a powerfulanointing of God. T he actual feeling of H is physical presenceupon my body and around the meeting has been the signal

for great healings to occur. I have seen cripp led peop le get

out of wheel chairs, lepers healed, blind people see, the deafand dumb hear and speak, strokes disappear, asthma go,cancer healed and every known form of disease disappearf rom peop le ’s bod ies when there has been a power fu lanointing. O h, how I long for that anointing in the meetings.Paul said, “ D o not quench the Spi ri t.” A ll believers shouldknow their inheritance in G od and the anointing w hich H e hasalready given them.

2 9 . SH O U L D W E A LWAYS K N OW T H E A N O I N T I N G ?

Yes, as we have already seen, we have an anointing fromthe H oly Spi ri t. We should expect this ano in ting to come at

any tim e as w e w ait upon the L ord and really allow the H olySpi ri t to move through us. We do no t have to work ourselvesup to it, but sim ply rest in the L ord and H is prom ises and theSpirit of God will fall upon us. I t is not a matter of trying towork ourselves up into a frenzy, but rather simply to rest inthe L ord, believing H is love and goodness for us, and as w eobey H im the anointing w ill always be present.

30 . CO N CL U SI O N We conclude that the anointing of God follows full and true

repentance. I f you have never know n God’s anointing then Isuggest that you search your heart in every area of truerepentance, renouncing not only your own sins in the name ofJesus Chr ist, but also the sins of your forefathers. I n thi s w ayyou are delivered from the curse of the law through the Cross

of Jesus Christ:

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “ Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” ), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Chr ist Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spi ri t through faith. (Galatians 3:13-14)

I submit that past involvement in the occult, either on our

own part or of our ancestors, can be a powerful blockage tothe anointing. I fur ther submit that failu re to repent from sin,including failure to forgive and failure to renounce doubt, fearand unbelief, wrong doctrine and blockage of mind, are allpowerfu l reasons w hy we do not know the anointing. Fur ther,I be l ieve tha t i n o rder to know the ano in t ing we mustabsolutely believe that the Word of God is true from beginning

to end and take it into our heart and not our mind.Summing up, I would submit that it is when we earnestlyseek the face of God in whatever circumstances and cast asideall doubt, fear and unbelief, that H is presence can b e kno w nphysically to us as the ano inting. O n the other hand, w herethere is doubt, fear and unbelief in a meeting and it becomesstrong enou gh, then the H oly Spi ri t can be quenched.

If we will do this as little children before God, then we shall

truly know H is anointing. I t may well be that w e are called toprayer and fasting so that the bondages of the past can bebroken under the anointing of God and we can really senseH is anointing. I t is true that w e w alk by faith and not by sightor by our feelings, but I am confident that if we do truly walkby faith then we shall know the feeling of the anointing of God.
