Dear Parent,

This year, Florida received permission from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to waive some of the requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. This resulted in changes to several public school programs. Florida lawmakers felt that some of the NCLB requirements should not be changed so they created a law that brought the SES program back. The law allows school districts to continue providing supplemental educational services (SES) to children who have not reached grade level.

Your child may be eligible to receive SES, in addition to the high quality programs they receive during the regular school day. SES is a program that offers free tutoring services outside of the regular school day. SES services will begin no later than October 15, 2012 (or November 15, 2012 with permission by FDOE because of late release of provider information). If your child is not eligible for SES there will be other opportunities to receive additional help throughout the school year. Please check with the school principal to find out more about these opportunities.

The SES program is limited to Title I students who tested at Level 1 and 2 on the 2012 FCAT in Reading and/or Mathematics. There are limited dollars to operate this additional program because of changes in Florida Law. Therefore, the district has prioritized students based on data. Priority will be given to certain critical grade levels where the data indicates we need to close the achievement gap the most.

Parents must choose a SES provider for their child. To help you with your decision, we have attached a packet of information about the SES providers who will be providing services during 2012 in Gadsden County. Please review the packet to find information about all of the free tutoring services available in 2012.

We also invite you to participate in one of our scheduled SES Provider Fairs to be held at the locations, days, and times listed below. At these Fairs, you will have an opportunity to meet with the state-approved providers serving Gadsden County and discuss the program that may best meet your child’s individual academic needs.

If you wish your child to participate in the SES program, please list three providers in the order of your preference on the Title I Supplemental Educational Services Notice of Intent for 2012-2013. The district will make every effort to assign your child to your first choice. If the first choice is not available, your child will be assigned to your second or third choice. There will be additional information coming home with your child during the first week of school about SES.

You must return the Title I Supplemental Educational Services Notice of Intent for 2012-2013 on or before September 17, 2012 to Mrs. Joann Kimble, Title I Program Assistant, at 35 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Quincy, Florida 32351 for your child to participate in the program. You may also hand deliver the form to the District Office or fax it to (850) 875-2983. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Mrs. Kimble at 627-9651 extension 1285 or Mrs. Joanette Thomas at 627-9651 extension 1375.

Free tutoring services shall begin no later than November 15, 2012, unless otherwise changed with permission of the Florida Department of Education. I understand that my child’s enrollment depends on the number of students requesting to participate and the available funds. If the number of parents who request SES exceeds the funding available, the district will prioritize services based on data. Estimados padres,

Este año, Florida recibió el permiso desde el Departamento de Educación Estados Unidos (USDE) a renunciar a algunos de los requisitos de la ley ningún niño izquierda atrás (NCLB).
