His Presidential Theme By Arnold R. Grahl Photos by Alyce Henson

Rotary International President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney explained his vision for building a

stronger Rotary, calling on leaders to expand connections to their communities and to embrace in-

novative membership models.

RI President-elect Mark Daniel Maloney announces the 2019-20 presidential theme, Rotary Con-

nects the World, to incoming district governors in San Diego, California, USA.

Maloney, a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, unveiled the 2019-20 presi-

dential theme, Rotary Connects the World, to incoming district governors at Rotary’s annual train-

ing event, the International Assembly, in San Diego, California, USA, on Monday.

“The first emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our pro-

jects, but most importantly, to grow our membership so that we can achieve more,” Maloney said.

Maloney believes that connection is at the heart of the Rotary experience.

“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differ-

ences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more

like us than we ever could have known. It connects us to our communities, to professional oppor-

tunities, and to the people who need our help.”

Maloney also called on every Rotary and Rotaract club to identify segments of their community

not represented in their club by creating a membership committee with diverse members.

“Through Rotary, we connect to the incredible diversity of humanity on a truly unique footing,

forging deep and lasting ties in pursuit of a common goal,” he added. “In this ever more divided

world, Rotary connects us all.”

Maloney urged leaders to offer alternative meeting experiences and service opportunities to make

it easier for busy professionals and people with many family obligations to serve in leadership

roles.

“We need to foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with the family, but rather comple-

ments it,” Maloney said. “That means taking real, practical steps to change the existing culture:

being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at

Rotary events on every level.”

Maloney said many of the barriers that prevent people from serving as leaders in Rotary are based

on expectations that are no longer relevant.

“It is time to adapt, to change our culture, and to convey the message that you can be a great dis-

trict governor without visiting every club individually, and a great president without doing every-

thing yourself.”

Relationship with the United Nations During 2019-20, Rotary will host a series of presidential conferences around the world, focusing

on Rotary’s relationship with the United Nations and the UN’s sustainable development goals that

many Rotary service projects support. More information will be available in July.

In 2020, the United Nations will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its charter and its mission of

promoting peace. Rotary was one of 42 organizations the United States invited to serve as consult-

ants to its delegation at the 1945 San Francisco conference, which led to the UN’s charter. For

decades, Rotary has worked alongside the United Nations to address humanitarian issues around

the world. Today, Rotary holds the highest consultative status that the UN offers to nongovern-

mental organizations.

“Rotary shares the United Nations’ enduring commitment to a healthier, more peaceful, and more

sustainable world,” Maloney said. “And Rotary offers something no other organization can match:

an existing infrastructure that allows people from all over the world to connect in a spirit of service

and peace and take meaningful action toward that goal.”

Well, I finally made it to PNG! After the visa cancellations in November, the timing for our trip

was postponed to February and we arrived back after a week over there last Wednesday.

The opening ceremony for the Supurunda Water Supply Project was absolutely fantastic and about

2,000 people were in attendance. It was a very colourful event with each of the villages in their

own traditional dress.

I distributed the footballs to Daulo High School;

1. Wairepo Primary School;

2. Lindima Primary School; and

3. Sausi Primary School.

I also gave out some balls and socks to the coaches of some local teams.

These people love the Broncos and really appreciated the socks as well as the footballs.

Many thanks for your assistance with this. It made my trip that much more pleasant.

With my trip to Papua New Guinea on 13-20 February, my attendance with Bill Dominguez at the

Rotary Club of Mitchelton “UMOJA” fundraising dinner on 23rd February, my presentation at the

Rotary Peace fellows seminar on 24th February and my presentation with Ian Cameron at Rotary

Club of Sunnybank Hills yesterday, it’s been a very busy, but enjoyable, Rotary fortnight for me.

The “Supurunda” Water Supply Project opening ceremony was spectacular with around 2,000

people in attendance and all dressed in the traditional costumes of the 10 individual villages.

There was a very professional singing group with guitars and a thong-o-phone and the Jungle Boys

troupe that performed as well. It was a great event. I distributed a few Broncos footballs and socks

and sawyer water filters while I was over there too!

The UMOJA event at Rotary Club of Mitchelton was well attended where Cathy Booth outlined

her plans for the expansion at UMOJA orphanage in Kenya. Around $7,000 was raised on the

night through the art auction, silent auction and raffles.

There are ten new Peace Scholars that have entered the Masters Degree program at the University

of Queensland. Shaughn Forbes (Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap) has championed and

coordinated this Rotary Project for many years and will hand over the reigns to Doug St Clair from

the Rotary Club of Sunnybank Hills in July this year. My presentation centred around the

practical delivery of peace and conflict resolution in the “Supurunda” Water Supply Project.

Ian’s and my presentation at RC Sunnybank Hills was well received and, over the next couple of

months, we’ll be visiting and giving presentations to the other Rotary Clubs (including RC

Toowong) who contributed to the “Supurunda” project.

THEATRE REVIEW – STAGE WHISPERS.

Australia’s Theatre Magazine

“Viagara Falls” - Sweeten Up!

By Janet Findlay and Alan Youngson. Directed by Alan Youngson. Presented by Studio 188

and Red Ticket Comedy Theatre. Studio 188, 23 February – 2 March, 2019

It was a jam-packed and enthusiastic crowd that attended the world premiere of Viagara Falls -

Sweeten Up. There were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in this bawdy, yet safe-for-nan farce.

A few of the jokes in the locally-written script were definitely more relatable for Ipswich locals

than out-of-towners. The narrative had recognisable and relatable characters. It was well-paced,

with never a dull moment.

The story was set in ‘Serenity Gardens’ retirement village a week out from the wedding of two of

the residents. Eric - the groom to be, played beautifully by Laurie Webb - having never married or

been with a woman before, obtains some unisex Viagra from his doctor for the ‘big night’. All

hell breaks loose when the residents mistake the tablets for artificial sweeteners and Eric tries and

fails to get his Viagra back. Before you know it, one of the residents has mistaken the mayhem for

a terrorist plot and the celebrant has unwittingly had too much Viagra. The bride and groom are

worried their ceremony won’t be able to go ahead as planned.

The cast worked well together, which is even more impressive since they’d had two last-minute

replacements step in. Any hesitations were quickly improvised around, with everyone working to

keep the story on track. All actors were committed to the farcical style the script demanded. Most

intoxicating was the palpable sense of how much fun this cast were having on stage. It’s always a

great pleasure to see actors who are really enjoying the work.

The set design by David Finn was effective and the direction from Alan Youngson made great use

of the set and the Studio 188 space. Noel Payne’s lighting design kept everyone focussed on the

action and only really fell down when one of the actors who had clearly been brought in at the last

minute had to pop in and out of the light to refer to her script.

Janet Findlay as Kitty delivered the most impressive acting of the evening. She had great charisma

and comic timing. Richard Edwards as Dr. Sadhu delivered the most realistic performance, which

was a nice counterpoint to the rest of the cast’s farcical style.

This play is fun for anyone aged 15 or over, but it especially appeals to a 50+ age-group. While

the younger members of the audience were enjoying the show, it was the seniors who loved it

best. They were laughing their heads off from the pre-show announcement all the way through to

the curtain call.

Kiesten McCauley (and congratulations Alan Youngson, Rotary Club of Toowong!)
