The President’s MessageHope you had a very good fortnight!
Last week my message couldn't go through in due time: internet access
has sometimes hiccups...then, too bad
to be a last minute writer: excuse being
that I have not yet learnt writing on
snow skis! (beautiful weather, snow and
scenery, batteries reloaded for Flora
and me, thank you).
I thought I could read my message at
the microphone in the Amora, but we
missed the 6am flight back from NZ,
and so also the lunch meeting! Sorry
about that.
These last 2 weeks have shown our
Rotary Club at its best: a masterly
organised and conducted SLADE Award,
thanks to John and his Committee, and,
this Thursday, The Boroondara Kindergarten Project first fundraiser:
fashion collection and friendly lunch
were promised... and delivered in an
outstanding manner. Thanks to Barbara and her Committee, especially
to Jo and Annie: this trio knows how to
translate an idea into action, a project
into gold: the budgeted sum is now
real money for the kindergarten, very
well done Ladies.
Our Board is meeting this Monday,
chaired by PE Trevor while I am
attending the World Roads Congress,
an event leading my field of expertise
held every 4 years, at Paris for the
100th anniversary...I had to go!
I'll try to make up at a Paris RC, then
next week at Singapore.
It is so nice to witness Rotary in action
anywhere, anytime.
Yours in Rotary JMB
Last week’s speakers: Jo Cowling, Nia Holdenson and Sue
Bolton: RYLA, RYPEN and MUNA The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program is a week-long
residential personal development program for young people aged 18-25, which
focuses on self-leadership and community. RYLA provides an opportunity for
young people from a diverse range of backgrounds to come together to gain a better understanding of their own strengths and the unique qualities and abilities
of others. This year Richmond has had an application from and is supporting the
nomination of Andrew Rosen from East Malvern.
The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a program of weekend
seminars for young people between the ages of 14 and 17 years. Its principal aim
is the communication of a series of ideas, problems and social experiences, which
help the young participants in forming their own values and moral standards.
RYPEN is different from many other youth programs in that it aims for the
average student and not for the outstanding few.
The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). This international youth project
simulates the workings of the United Nations Assembly by having teams of two
senior students from a number of schools represent a particular U.N. country in
debates on matters of world political and social concern. It is run as a residential
camp, usually held in May at a University.
Sue gave us a very personal view of the history of the MUNA experience from the
viewpoint of the MGC girls who have attended, often sponsored by Richmond RC,
since the school first became involved in the mid 1990s.

Vale Alexander Gillon. Alexander
George Gillon passed away on 25th
August 2007. He was a good age as he was born in 1909.
He was a member at Richmond and was
awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in 1987-1988 the year Barry Roberts was
President.
Some of our more long-serving
members may remember Alexander. He
was married to Thelma for 65 years and
is survived by his two children Pauline
and Alexander, grandfather to eight, and great grandfather to five.
The club sends its condolences.

New Member Information Workshops 9.30am-12.00pm
Sunday, 7 October, International
House, Parkville
Have you joined Rotary in the last
couple of years – or perhaps you’d just
like to know more about the Rotary
organisation, regardless of when you
joined? Then you’re invited to come
along to this session we are holding and
be informed, educated and inspired by
Rotary’s capacity to help others
throughout the world.
This workshop will be a combination of
presentation of Rotary information
combined with time spent in discussion groups with very experienced Rotarians
who can share their knowledge with
you. Come along and ask all the
questions you may have about what Rotary does in other clubs, in our
District and in the rest of the world.
Find out all about the opportunities that
exist within Rotary to make your
contribution to a better world.
Contact PDG Ann White to register or if
you have any queries – 9699 5538 (ah), 9682-7777 (bh), 0402 306 790

The Boroondara Kindergarten Project Team wishes to thank all the
generous sponsors who contributed to
the success of the event last Thursday.
They are listed in full on the website
edition of this Bulletin along with

Membership. Report by Barry Roberts,
Director, Membership
After considerable discussion, the Board
believes that membership remains a
high priority issue for our Club. Our target is to build membership this year
to 60 members (including Honorary and
Exempt). Our medium term goal, which
we want to achieve in the next 2 - 3 years, is to build our total membership
to 80 members and to increase the
percentage of young and female
members.
The Board is also determined that we will hold a membership drive later in
this Rotary year, culminating with a
membership interest meeting to be
held on Monday 4th February.
Members are encouraged between now
and then to identify, amongst their
circle of friends, relatives, business
acquaintances, etc., possible
candidates for membership of the Club.
Next week: Foundation.
The Rotary Club of Richmond Meeting 1987 17th September 2007 Page 4Costume Collection/Luncheon
Report By Jo Cowling, Barbara
Woodberry, Annie Wysham. A fabulous day for the club and the 60 plus guests who attended the Costume Collection
and Luncheon on Thursday 13th Sept.
Jean Marc, Barry and Mark Fowler were invaluable in their role as waiters/
kitchen hands, highlighting what is so special about our Rotary Club - the willingness to support each other! They ventured even as far as the kitchen, in
support of the Rotary gals' cause! And what a great example of what Rotary is all about. This event exposed a different group to the ways of our club,
highlighting just who we are, how we work, and how much fun we have whilst
supporting the community cause. A
great way to sell the club.
Special thanks to Elodie Martin (FOR) who opened her home for the luncheon and Loel Thompson who conducted two
fascinating tours of her costume collection.
All expenses for the event were covered
by donation, so the $2976 raised passes in toto to the Boroondara Kindergarten
Project and specifically to Mark's sand
pit shade cloth project.
Thank you to those Rotarians and FORs who were able to support us on the
day. Anyone willing to donate the $24 needed to reach $3000 exact?
A selection of photos taken on the day is on the website edition of this bulletin.
Did you know?
There is a District 9800 International Fellowships Committee which has responsibility for:
• Sister Clubs
• Rotary Fellowship Exchanges, where a group of Rotarians heads overseas
to be hosted by Rotarians in another country (and similarly come into our District to be hosted by a club(s))
• Global Networking Groups (i.e. wine,
tennis, golf, aviation, international travel and hosting etc)
Recently in the Bulletin the 3 outgoing
trips for 2008 were outlined: UK, Sweden and USA.
Barbara Woodberry is a member of that
District Committee
