Greetings Rotarians and Friends –

Last Monday Dr. Peter Lee PhD BEng, a highly qualified mechanical engineer who has specialised in Bioengineering, was our guest speaker. There are 110 million landmines buried around the world and between 15.000 and 20,000 people are injured, maimed or killed by these explosive devices every year; these facts were featured in the latest edition of ‘The Rotarian’ magazine. They made Peter’s presentation even more commanding! Peter is the chief investigator in the development of an innovative technique to produce high quality artificial limbs and is leading a trial study of the PCAST project; to be conducted in collaboration with the Vietnamese Training Centre for Orthopaedic Technologies (VIETCOT) in Hanoi, Vietnam. Fifty volunteer amputees will participate in this study which is being conducted over a one year period.

I would like to thank Past President Trevor Pang who recognized the enormous benefits of this project and presented this opportunity to our Club and to the Board.

The Club decided to provide financial support for this international project, allowing the trial to take place. On Monday last, at the Club meeting, I was delighted to present a cheque to Peter for $2,200 on behalf or our Members and to have Jenny List, Friends of Richmond Rotary Chair (FoRR), present a cheque for $400. Rotarian Simon Marriott’s company, Formero Pty Ltd, has already generously donated $10,000. These monies will assist the continued development of this worthy project. Read more about the presentation and this project in The Tiger Rag this week, 21st February 2011. (See pages 4 & 5 and some horrifying information on page 16 of the web edition).

Our Abbotsford Convent car parking fundraiser – what an outstanding result! Last weekend we raised just over $2,200! This allows us to continue to support the Club’s projects, both in the local and international community. Thank you to all who volunteer for the rosters.

The Lunar Dinner preparations are well underway for the Club’s major fundraising event for 2010-2011. The funds raised at the Lunar Dinner allow us to respond when communities both locally and overseas face difficult times and to provide support for our projects to ensure successful outcomes.

However to achieve this success we need your continued help and support, so please come along and bring your family, friends and colleagues. (See flyer/form pages 13 & 14)

This Monday 21st February 2011 meeting is our 2nd Club Forum for the Rotary Year 2010-2011. This will be an opportunity for us to reflect on the Rotary year so far, to provide an update on the status of our Club projects and activities; a chance to celebrate our successes and to look forward to the future of our Club with confidence.

Until next week –

Jo Cowling President 2010-2011

FEBRUARY IS ROTARY ‘WORLD UNDERSTANDING MONTH’

Rotarians around the world celebrate Rotary’s anniversary this Wednesday, 23rd February, as World Understanding and Peace Day. (See page 8) On 23 February 1905 Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram E. Shorey and Paul P. Harris gathered in Loehr’s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting. (See pic page 7) Harris’s desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship. Read about each of the first four Rotarians and about Harry L. Ruggles - who is often called the ‘fifth Rotarian’, at: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/110210_news_history.aspx

LAST WEEK’S ‘SPEAKER’S CORNER’ Meeting 2128, Monday 14th February, 2011

Our Guest Speaker: Dr Peter Lee His Topic: Development of Pressure Cast Techniques in Fitting Prosthetic Limbs – Vietnam & Cambodia Field Trials Meeting Chair: PP Trevor Pang TR Reporter: Annie Wysham – T Rag Sub-Editor

AN INTERNATIONAL PROJECT SUPPORTED BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF RICHMOND –

“A little boy was teased at school because he didn’t have a leg - now that’s all changed!’ stated Associate Professor Peter Lee from the University of Melbourne’s Department of Mechanical Engineering during his presentation to the Club last Monday evening. “The little boy from Cambodia was born without one leg; now thanks to a new prosthetic low-cost limb he’s just like any other little boy!”

We watched him on video happily playing, running and kicking a ball around with his family and friends. The Cambodian Trust’s ‘Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics’ will fit him with a new artificial limb every 3-6 months while he’s growing.

“Mobility is the first step to basic rights.” Dr Lee said. The Cambodian Trust also provide prosthetics and orthotics training for students from low-income countries. Students learn how to prescribe, manufacture and fit artificial limbs (prostheses) and orthopaedic braces (orthoses). These devices are essential for the mobility and self-sufficiency of people who have lost their limbs or mobility due to landmines, accidents and disease. Demand far exceeds the number that can be produced or distributed. ‘In Cambodia alone there are an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 amputees. According to a United Nations report of the Secretary-General to its General Assembly, in the mid-1990s this equated to a staggering one out of every 234 Cambodians missing a limb.’

In an attempt to make some positive difference to this disturbing world-wide problem, teams of final-year students, supervised by Dr Lee, have developed low-cost artificial limbs using the pressure cast (PCAST) technique which uses weight-bearing as a feature in making a cast. Gravity and the person’s weight determine the shape of the socket. He said that they have also been conducting research on various kinds of low-cost artificial limbs with patient trials on below-knee amputees at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. This includes fabricating PCAST sockets used by test subjects to observe the ease of use of a casting system. As an extension to PCAST, a prosthetic socket was fabricated using the direct casting method with quick curing composite materials; it is aimed at developing countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia where there is a lack of skilled prosthetists to deal with the large volume of below-knee amputees.

Dr Lee told us that ‘the PCAST is a cheaper and faster fabrication method that produces good fitting sockets’ – they cost approximately $100 each…compared to computer-controlled knee joint prosthetics (at the other end of the scale) that cost $25,000 each! He stated that amputees face terrible problems when trying to cope with hopelessly inadequate prostheses and struggle with well-worn, damaged artificial limbs that rarely last more than a couple of months.

Looking towards the implementation of PCAST in developing countries, last September Dr Lee conducted a feasibility trip to Vietcot in Hanoi, Vietnam. The trial was very successful with the project highlight being able to demonstrate the PCAST system to the Vietnamese Centre of Orthotics Training (VIETCOT). We watched a video of a ‘first time fit’ adult patient who was keen to show off to the team and jumped on a bicycle and rode it around – he was just so excited to be ambulent! With the project support of Richmond Rotary, Dr Lee said they are now concentrating on improving the socket – he then explained this further with overhead diagrams. The socket can be flexible or rigid depending on the needs of the patient and has a 2-3 years life expectancy, plus there are a number of different knee designs.

Dr Peter Lee was accompanied by project collaborators, Associate Professor Noel Lythgo, Rehabilitation Sciences Research Centre, University of Melbourne and Jim Lavranos, Certified Prosthetist Orthotist, Royal Melbourne Hospital, along with Robert Reid, Executive Director of the CASS Foundation and a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne. Dr Peter Lee’s project is funded by the CASS Foundation (CASS is an acronym for 'Contributing to Australian Scholarship and Science'). It is a private philanthropic foundation. In closing Dr Lee shared these sobering thoughts: ‘110 million landmines are buried around the world still. Signs now warn of some with the message: WATCH YOUR STEP!’

In thanking Dr Lee, meeting Chair, PP Trevor Pang, pledged the support of the RC Richmond to the PCAST project and stated ‘that he sees this as an on-going long term association with the CASS Foundation & the University of Melbourne’. He reminded everyone of the Club’s Lunar New Year Banquet fundraiser to be held on Saturday 5th March, with funds raised predominantly going towards this project. (See flyer pages 13 & 14)

Club President Jo Cowling also warmly thanked Dr Lee and presented him with a Richmond Rotary cheque for $2,200. This was followed by Friends of Richmond Rotary Chair, Jenny List, with a cheque for $400 - the fundraising proceeds from the recent FoRR visit to the

Johnston Collection in East Melbourne. Richmond Rotarian Simon Marriott, Managing Director, Formero Pty Ltd, has already donated towards the project - a generous donation of $10,000. At the close of the meeting fellowship continued, with many of those present keen to speak with our guest speaker and the PCAST project visitors.

ROTARY WORLD UNDERSTANDING AND PEACE DAY- 23RD FEBRUARY. Sources: Community Service Update – Rotary International, February 2011 & Rotary International: The Rotary Foundation, January 2011.

Rotarians around the world celebrate Rotary’s anniversary, Wednesday, 23rd February, as World Understanding and Peace Day. An e-learning module about incorporating peace and conflict prevention & resolution, one of The Rotary Foundation’s areas of focus into club and district projects, is available on the Rotary International website at: www.rotary.org/en/Members/RunningADistrict/FutureVisionPilotProgram/Pages/AreasofFocus.aspx

CREATING A NEW GENERATION OF PEACEMAKERS IN UGANDA –

Uganda was torn apart by a 20-year civil war that left 300,000 people dead and displaced over 1.8 million. Although peace was declared in 2006, there is a lot of work to be done to address the lasting damage and to prevent future discord. With help from a Rotary Foundation grant, the Rotary clubs of Rubaga, Uganda, and Lambert Airport, Missouri, USA, are providing training in peace-building to 200 teachers and 1,300 students at 10 regional high schools. In November, The Rotary Foundation awarded a US$16,096 global grant to the Rotary clubs of Rubaga, Uganda, and Lambert Airport, Missouri, USA, to provide training in peace-building to 200 teachers and 1,300 students at 10 high schools in the region. The sponsor clubs will work with the Great Lakes Centre for Conflict Resolution in Gulu to carry out the project. The effort also will create ‘peace clubs’ at the schools, which will use music, drama, and other means to provide ongoing education about conflict prevention and resolution to the surrounding communities.

Great Lakes Centre co-founder Robert Opira leads children in Gulu, Uganda, on a walk to promote peace.

Photo courtesy of Robert Opira The Great Lakes Center is the brainchild of two former Rotary Peace Fellows, Robert Opira (2005-07) and Godfrey Mukalazi (2004-06), who came up with the idea while studying at the University of Queensland in Australia.

RICHMOND ROTARY ROUNDUP – Annie Wysham, Tiger Rag Sub-Editor and Club Sergeant

üGetting to know you... At last week’s meeting, Jordana Senff, our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, gave a short presentation to the Club where she ‘introduced’ her family to us and her hometown, Florianópolis - the capital city of Santa Catarina State in Southern Brazil! Highlights were overheads of her handsome

family members, her 15th birthday celebrations, her Florianópolis school and the gorgeous beaches (47!). Jordana is settling happily in to school life now in Melbourne where she said that ‘the students at her new school, MGC, have been so friendly and welcoming’. (She now gets to walk to school with her ‘host sister’ Tess) Congratulations! A great presentation Jordana and very well prepared – we look forward to more! (Jordana pictured above)

üAnother great news item re ROMAC per John Benger: The story of a little girl from Fiji, Abigail Morris– I year old - featured on Channel 10 news last week and in the Herald Sun and the Daily Telegraph (Feb 18 2011): As Southern Director of ROMAC, John Benger, our Richmond Rotarian, explained that ‘Abigail had a cyst in her head which had grown to occupy 50% of her head’. Without surgery, Abigail would have suffered increasing disability, very poor functioning and possibly death. Local Fijian doctors raised the alarm when her eyesight worsened and ROMAC helped facilitate her admission to the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton for the surgery. It took a 3-hour operation for Monash surgeons to remove the cyst and all went smoothly and they are hopeful of a full recovery for the little girl. She will fly home to Fiji very shortly. [www.romac.org.au Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children: ROMAC]

AND

üTo John from President Jo: I would like to congratulate you and the ROMAC team for the support you provide to children requiring life saving treatments through this Rotary program. This was reflected in the news reports both on Television and in the print media over the weekend.

The greatest achievement is the children who are benefited by ROMAC and reflected in this instance by that of little Abigail. Please pass on our gratitude to all concerned for the wonderful work that you do through Rotary. We are very pleased that you are a member of the Rotary Club of Richmond.

üFOR YOUR CLUB DIARY: Visit to the Lyon House Museum in Kew, Tuesday 3rd May, 1.30pm – 2.45pm, (limit of 25 people). Cost: $30 pp - includes afternoon tea at the List’s home nearby. Organized by the Friends of Richmond Rotary – all monies raised to go to the RCR’s ‘Vietcot - PCAST System’ project (Further details from FoRR Chair, Jenny List) Lyon House Museum website: http://lyonhousemuseum.com.au/

FROM THE RD 9800 NETWORKER, 11th FEBRUARY 2011 – üFREE: Women in Rotary Task Force meeting - Saturday 19 March 2011, The Travel Inn Hotel, Corner of Drummond & Grattan Streets, Carlton – contact: Kerry Kornhauser at [email protected] or 0411 597 690. ‘Women In Rotary Can Make a World of Difference’. Only 17% of Rotarians are women. Around the world, Rotary membership is in decline. In Australia a trickle-down effect is in evidence with a steady loss of 300-400 members per year. EARLY PEEK! CHECK OUT THE ‘YARRA NEWS’ COVER GIRLS (+ ONE LITTLE BOY)! By Annie Wysham, Tiger Rag Sub-Ed

To advertise Clean Up Australia Day 2011 on Sunday 6th March and the 6 official clean up sites that are registered within the City of Yarra, last week, at short notice, a group of Rotarians gathered at Burnley Oval, Burnley Park, Richmond, for a ’photo shoot’ with the City of Yarra photographer,

Michael Ward. They included our Club President, Jo Cowling and Rotarians’ - Sandy Day, Annie Wysham and Elissa Marriott with her young sons, Patrick and Lewis. Sadly Lewis had already dozed off in his pram and woke up when the ‘camera/lights/action’ were all over! As part of the Clean Up Australia Day Organising committee Annie took along the CUA Day ‘props’ (included BYO rubbish/recyclables!) and a Richmond Rotary banner to add colour and meaning to it all. Michael advised us that the one of the photos taken would be featured on the front cover of the Yarra News March 2011 edition. ‘Yarra News’ is a free, City of Yarra monthly glossy

publication, delivered to all residentials and businesses within the City of Yarra. As a number of photos were taken on the day ‘fingers crossed’ that the photo with our Richmond Rotary banner in the background is the one chosen by City of Yarra’s Communications & Media Department. The other RCR - CUA Day Project Committee members, Krissy O’Reilly and Susanna Chan, sadly couldn’t attend to include some (added) glamour, good looks and extra youthfulness to the photos! At the Audi Penfold Burwood - Early Bird Registrations cocktail party, held 10th February, I was speaking with Saxon Mitchell of the Rotary Club of Melbourne Park – the recently chartered Rotary club with members aged from early 20’s to the mid-30’s. I said I would send him some information re our Richmond Rotary - Clean Up Australia Day project, Sunday 6th March, for their Club bulletin.

'We don’t have one!' Saxon said, "We just use Facebook!' Annie Wysham, The Tiger Rag Sub-Ed!

THE SECOND SPECIAL ‘PEARL DAY’ LUNCHEON WAS A ‘REAL PEARLER’ OF A DAY!

Once again Rob Mactier’s ‘Pearl Day’, held last Saturday, 19th February, 2011, at his property, ‘Allendale’, Elphinstone, in memory of his late wife, Kate, was a wonderful success with over 100 people attending! This included a large contingent from Richmond Rotary. Thanks to Rob’s 3 gorgeous daughters – Annabelle, Lucy and Clementine – and other family members, we were wined, dined, waited-upon and welcomed in true country style to their lovely 120 year old, history-laden homestead. In thanking everyone, Rob stated that the $50 donation per person charged will be donated to Australian Rotary Health – Cancer Research; and all the costs incurred for the event will once again be met by Rob himself. A real ‘pearler of a day’ Rob and a loving tribute to your Kate. (Photos will be featured in the next Tiger Rag, 7th March – Sub-Editor)
