The Road to RevolutionFrench and Indian War

Ticket In

On Friday, we talked about the roots of revolution in the 13 colonies.

Take a minute to look through your notes.

Share two factors that contributed to the climate of rebellion that was developing.

Why didn’t the colonists rise up right after the Navigation Acts were passed in

the 1660s?

Turning Point: The French and Indian

War• The French empire and the British empire were

often colliding with one another in North America. • The French and Indian War broke out in 1754. • The French had more Native American allies to

fight along side them due to positive trade relationships.

• Eventually Britain gained the support of the powerful Iroquois.

• Treaty of Paris ended the war in 1763: Great Britain claimed Canada and virtually all of North America east of the Mississippi.

Effects on American Life

NATIVE AMERICANSo Native Americans resented the growing numbers

of British setters that were now crossing the Appalachian Mountains.

o The Native Americans captured eight British forts. o British responded by presenting blankets

contaminated with smallpox to Native American chiefs during peace negotiations

o Most Native American groups negotiated treaties with the British by the summer of 1766.

Effects on American Life

COLONISTSo Early British losses in the war caused colonists to

question the competence of the British Army

o Proclamation of 1763: The British government established a line along the Appalachian mountains that colonists were not allowed to cross.

o Britain’s financial crisis after all the conflict brought about new laws and more rigorous enforcement of the Navigation Acts.
