We are pleased to share with you The River’s 2019 annual report highlighting the wonderful work that we have accomplished together over the past year.

In 2019, we remained focused on our goals to alleviate hunger, specifically for children, older adults, and veterans:

• We partnered with Food for Thought Initiative to end hunger among Madison public school students and their families through in-school pantries and weekend food programs.

• We collaborated with NewBridge Madison and RSVP of Dane County to launch Food Bridge, a free monthly food delivery program for low-income older adults in Madison and Monona.

• We added a new weekly market session just for veterans and older adults to provide more flexibility and convenience.

Because of the support of donors and volunteers like you, we have been able to help so many and accomplish so much. Last year, we served 302 more families than the previous year. We also distributed 2.4 million pounds of healthy, nutritious food, and $868,371 worth of clothing and household items. Through the quality and quantity of food and resources we shared, we provided household stability for nearly 5,000 local, Dane County households. Yet, there is still more to do.

As we publish this report, the world is in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. The River established a COVID-19 Emergency Food Fund to meet the nutritional demands of Dane County for the duration of the pandemic. We are energized and ready to continue with you, our partner, on the journey to achieve a fully nourished community.

The River’s mobile lunch program, MUNCH, provides healthy lunches to children, teens, and their caretakers in low-income Dane County neighborhoods every non-school day, including all weekends, school holidays, and all of summer and winter break.

Every Friday at The River last year, clients could also take home two MUNCH lunches per child in their household for extra nutrition over the weekend.

From its inception in 2016 through 2019, MUNCH served a grand total of 224,298 lunches to help end childhood hunger.
