OUR MISSIONTwo River Theater is a professional 501(c)(3) nonprofi t theater that produces an eight-play season, including classics, contemporary works, musicals and world premieres. We reach more than 50,000 patrons and guests each year from our state-of-the-art facility in Red Bank, New Jersey. We create great American theater by developing and producing new works and world masterpieces that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others.

Did you hear? In a list of “The 20 Best Small Towns in America,” Smithsonian Magazine cited Red Bank as #3—and Two River Theater was acclaimed a s one of the reasons why. Now the rest of the nation is learning that Red Bank is home to a vibrant community with picturesque waterfront views, bustling shops, and cultural institutions that offer rich arts experiences. And, if Two River was once New Jersey’s best-kept secret, our reputation continues to grow well beyond the loyal subscriber base that started with us when Joan and Robert M. Rechnitz founded the theater on the campus of Monmouth College in 1994.

Our 2011/12 season consisted of great classics (including some contemporary classics), powerful solo performances, and two world premieres that we were proud to produce in our intimate Marion Huber Theater: Madeleine George’s Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England, and the musical In This House by Mike Reid, Sarah Schlesinger, and Jonathan Bernstein. Having developed these productions during the season, we were thrilled that both shows had extended runs due to popular demand.

Against national trends of falling subscriptions and a weakened economy, our patron base continues to increase. We expanded our patron base this year by 5%, to 3,283 total subscribers. With an 80% subscription renewal rate, our loyal audiences are demonstrating their commitment to Two River. We now reach more than 50,000 patrons and guests each year. We continue to enjoy the support of some of the region’s most noteworthy institutional funders, and are constantly building

new partnerships. Our donor base also continues to grow—this year gifts from individuals increased by close to 150%.

We are deeply appreciative of the generous individuals, corporations, and foundations whose support enables us to pursue the highest standards of artistic excellence. We look forward to building on this year’s momentum in the coming season. Thank you for supporting Two River Theater Company!

EIGHT SHOWS ON TWO STAGES

Two River Theater produces an eight-play season on two stages: the Rechnitz, a 350-seat theater; and the Marion, a fl exible performance space that seats 110. In our state-of-the-art performance facility, we support the most exceptional and adventurous artists in the American theater.

The 2011/2012 Season was the fi rst under the joint leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst. It was a year fi lled with resonant, bold, smart, and adventurous work. In a gratifying testament to our success, Two River Theater was the only company from across the state of New Jersey to have two plays cited in critic Peter Filichia’s 2011 ‘Top 10 Best’ list in The Star-Ledger: Nilaja Sun’s No Child…, a tour-de-force solo performance about public education; and

Madeleine George’s world-premiere comedy, Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England.

The season began with Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, continuing the theater’s long tradition of bringing audiences great productions of the classics. Directed by Tony nominee Sam Buntrock, the production starred Obie winner Michael Cumpsty and Tony nominee Kathryn Meisle as Shakespeare’s sparring lovers Benedick and Beatrice. Continuing another beloved tradition, we produced our annual family show during the holiday season, Honk!.

Throughout the season, we continued to invite some of the most accomplished artists in the American theater to work on our stages, including Obie winner Nilaja Sun

(No Child…) and Grammy nominee Maureen McGovern (Carry It On). We produced Two River’s fi rst-ever productions of plays by August Wilson (Jitney) and Alan Ayckbourn (My Wonderful Day), and in the process welcomed to our family not only these writers, but also the gifted directors Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Nicholas Martin.

The theater also championed and helped nurture new projects, including two world premieres that were developed at Two River before going on to acclaimed full productions in the Marion Huber Theater: Madeleine George’s Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England, directed by Ken Rus Schmoll, and the musical In This House, by Grammy Award-winner Mike Reid, Sarah Schlesinger, and Jonathan Bernstein, directed by May Adrales.

CREATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF AMERICAN THEATER

Two River Theater is committed to supporting the voices and visions of leading and emerging artists in the creation of new and original work. We offer resources of all kinds to playwrights and other artists—residencies and space to write and rehearse, the time to work with directors and actors, feedback from Artistic Director John Dias, and the opportunity to hear their original plays (or musicals) performed by actors in readings and workshops.

One of our new initiatives in a commissioning program that gives writers fi nancial assistance. Commissions allow us to foster ambitious new works that we believe will become part of the national canon—and help make Two River one of the most important theaters in the country for artists to come and try out their biggest and boldest ideas.

So far, three playwrights have received commissions from the theater: Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage (whose play Intimate Apparel we produced to great success in the 2010/2011 Season); Lisa Kron, a playwright and actor; and Ruben Santiago-Hudson, a multi-hyphenate playwright, actor, and director.

In addition, Two River commissioned composer/lyricist Joe Iconis (and his collaborator, playwright Joe Tracz) to write a new musical. The idea to commission Iconis came from his

performance at the theater’s fi rst Cabaret of New Songs for the Musical Theater. Now an ongoing tradition and one of our most popular programs, the Cabaret is presented with New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Featuring excerpts from new musicals-in-process written by composers and bookwriters-lyricists who are graduates of the program, this ongoing collaboration truly refl ects what is ahead in the musical theater.

Another new program at Two River is Crossing Borders, a four-day festival of new plays by Latino writers and free public events, including an outdoor neighborhood party with live music, and conversations with artists and community leaders. Curated by Two River and guest director Jerry Ruiz, Crossing Borders features the talents of two dozen artists and introduces nearly 500 people to the work of adventurous Latino playwrights, actors, and directors.

Throughout the season, the theater presents readings of new plays and musicals and other artistic development activities—all free and open to the public. Inviting audiences to invest in original work contributes to the health of the theater and the growth of the fi eld, and encourages Two River’s entire community to interact with the world-class writers, composers, actors, directors, and designers that the theater brings to Red Bank.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

BEFORE PLAYPrior to every performance of each subscription production in the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Theater, an Artistic Staff member or special guest provides audiences with background about the show. During the 2011/12 Season, Two River’s Artistic Staff facilitated 105 Before Plays. These Before Plays provided more than 4,500 patrons with context and background about the show.

AFTER PLAYAfter Play discussions follow select performances in the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Theater and most performances in the Marion Huber Theater. Audiences are invited to share their questions and responses to our productions in post-show talkbacks with our Artistic Staff and members of the cast. After Plays followed every performance of our two world-premiere productions, Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England and In This House, and our family show, Honk! A Musical Tale of the Ugly Duckling. During the 2011/12

Season, our After Play discussions reached approximately 1,500 patrons.

We were pleased to recognize Zager Fuchs, P.C. as the sponsor of our Before and After Play Series during the 2011/12 Season.

ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITYEach year, Two River Theater leads a town-wide program with the goal of uniting the Greater Red Bank area through community discussions, readings, and local arts events. For our 2011/12 Season the program was centered on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale, The Ugly Duckling, and included partnerships with more than a dozen local libraries. One Book, One Community also brought together dozens of local businesses and nonprofi t organizations as sponsors and community partners. DÍA DE LA FAMILIATwo River’s Día de la Familia reached close to 200 Latino individuals and families, who attended Two River’s

production of Honk! in December 2011. Families see a performance, offered with a live Spanish translation using audio-description headsets, and enjoy theater games and refreshments — all at no cost. This year was the theater’s fourth annual Día de la Familia. Over the past four years, approximately 170 households attended Día and subsequently returned to the theater to see other productions.

COMMUNITY PREVIEWDuring the 2011/12 Season, Two River’s Community Preview Program reached 37 local nonprofi ts, allowing clients and volunteers from these organizations to see a performance at Two River Theater for free. Through this program, Two River reached close to 700 patrons, over half of whom were new to the Community Preview Program. Through this program, Two River offers support and additional resources to other local nonprofi ts which are providing essential public and social services that contribute to the health of our community.

At the heart of our mission we believe theater provides a valuable opportunity for diverse audiences to come together to see art that refl ects the world in which we live. In all of our work, we create opportunities for the public to interact with the world-class theater artists that we are now bringing to Red Bank.

Two River Theater is committed to ensuring that everyone, including those with disabilities, has the opportunity to participate in our performances as patrons, actors or employees. Our access programs include sign interpretation, open captioning, audio description, assistive listening, large print playbills and wheelchair accessibility. We also offer reduced ticket prices to those with special needs and their companions. To increase community awareness about our access services, we have developed partnerships with organizations including Springpoint

Senior Living Foundation, Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, CACOD, the New Jersey Council

of the Blind and The Monthly

Communicator.

AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES

Two River’s staff of trained audio describers provide a live, objective and succinct description of the action and visual elements of the play (without interfering with the dialogue) heard by participating patrons through Infrared Listening Devices. During the 2011/12 Season, we offered two audio described performances for each production in our subscription series for a total of 14 performances. For the fi rst time in our history, Two River offered two subscription productions in our Marion Huber Theater and offered audio description for both of these productions.

ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES

Infrared hearing enhancement devices are offered free of charge and are available on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis for all Two River Theater performances.

OPEN CAPTIONING

Spoken dialogue scrolls across a screen as the action occurs live on stage. The caption unit is visible to the entire audience but located in an unobtrusive location near the stage. During our 2011/12 Season, we offered one open captioned

performance for every show in our subscription series.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETATION

A team of professional certifi ed ASL interpreters provides a sign language-interpreted performance. Our family holiday show, Honk! was interpreted into American Sign Language.

LARGE PRINT PROGRAMS

Large print programs for each production are available for free at the Box Offi ce.

Our Theater Access programs are made possible through generous support from the Springpoint Senior Living Foundation, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, Jorgensen Foundation and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

NO SEATS EMPTY AND STUDENT MATINEES

Two River’s No Seats Empty program makes theater accessible to all students by providing free tickets and transportation to low-income schools attending student matinee performances. For the 2011/12 school year, we reached over 1,600 students, plus 145 teachers and chaperones. Approximately 3,360 students attended our matinees this year, therefore close to 50% of the students attending these shows were given free tickets. Twenty-two schools participated in No Seats Empty this year from Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, Essex, Mercer and Union Counties. Over 70% of participating students came from Monmouth County schools. For the 2011/12 season, fourteen student matinees were offered for fi ve of Two River’s productions.

METRO SCHOLARS

Now in its seventh year, this innovative and highly competitive internship program is an opportunity for 10–12 outstanding high school juniors to be involved with Two River for an entire season. Selected students see the theater’s productions, take master classes and workshops, talk with the artists, and work one-on-one with the staff in year-long assistantships. 2011/12 master classes included workshops on Shakespeare with classical actor Michel Cumpsty, who played Benedick in Two River’s production of Much Ado About Nothing; creating a solo theater piece with Nilaja Sun, the writer and performer of No Child…; analyzing the plays of August Wilson with Kamilah Forbes,

the assistant director of Jitney; and “acting a song” with Chuck Cooper, star of both Jitney and the new musical In This House. In connection

with the theater’s holiday show, the Metro Scholars explored props, puppetry, and family theater with teaching artist Morgan Kelly.

PLAYBACK

PlayBack is an intensive 12-week program for high school students, who get the opportunity to work with teaching artists to create and perform an original play based on the themes of a Two River production. This season’s PlayBack participants created One Child, furthering the investigation of issues addressed in Nilaja Sun’s No Child… At the beginning of the process, ten high school students were inspired by Nilaja Sun herself in a workshop about the creation of original plays. During the development process of One Child, these young actor/playwrights explored their feelings about education, their families, and their own hunger to be seen and understood through acting and writing exercises. Designed to foster the collaborative process of making

theater, PlayBack included students from seven different high schools throughout the county.

YOUNG VOICES 732

During the 2011/12 school year, Two River teaching artists conducted two 8-week puppetry residencies for 305 Red Bank Primary School children in grades K-2. The workshops included lessons in puppetry, props, and storytelling. The teaching artists structured lessons around the school’s curriculum by using stories the students were reading in class.

The students learned different styles of puppetry and created their own puppets. Two River also continued development of Middle School Mysteries, a musical originally created for the Young Voices 732 program. Over the course of the year, Two River held multiple readings for the new work and looks forward to incorporating this into its educational programming going forward.

SUMMER ENSEMBLES

Two River’s summer theater camp encourages young people (grades 1–12) to explore their creativity, take risks and build confi dence. The camp includes four distinct “tracks” that range from theater games for the very young, to specialized classes in acting or design for older students. Both the middle and high school tracks culminate in the performance of original plays created in response to one of the plays in Two River’s season. During June 2011, Summer Ensembles saw a 13% increase in enrollment. Of the 139 students who participated, 17 received full scholarships — a 30% increase from the previous year.

EVENT SPONSORS

During the 2011/12 Season, we welcomed many of our closest supporters to two special fundraising events. In November 2011, actors Alec Baldwin and Michael Cumpsty generously donated their time in support of Two River Theater for “Baldwin. Cumpsty. Unplugged,” an evening of conversation, impressions, insight into the craft of acting and scenes from great plays. The sold-out event, which included a pre-show reception with donors, raised nearly $46,000 to support our artistic, education and community programming. In March 2012, Two River held a gala, The 21 Club, on the Joan and Robert Rechnitz stage at 21 Bridge Avenue. The festive celebration opened a door to the Roaring Twenties, a period of dazzling artistic achievements and endless possibilities. Guests were treated to a delicious dinner by Restaurant Nicholas and a special performance by Grammy Award winner Mike Reid. This event grossed nearly $225,000 in support of our mission.

John Dias (Artistic Director) assumed his position as Two

River’s Artistic Director in August 2010 after working as a

producer and dramaturg in New York for 20 years. Throughout

his career, John has been a leading advocate for bold new

American plays and stimulating productions of the classics,

including the Broadway productions of Lisa Kron’s Well and

Shakespeare’s The Tempest. For 12 seasons, he worked

in a variety of capacities at The Public Theater/New York

Shakespeare Festival, including Associate Producer and

Associate Artistic Director. During much of his tenure at

The Public, working for Producer George C. Wolfe, he was

responsible for all aspects of play production on the theater’s

six stages and the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. He also

ran the theater’s literary department, overseeing new-play

workshops and productions of classics by Shakespeare and

other writers, and he directed and taught in the Shakespeare

Lab, a professional actor-training program. Previously, he was

dramaturg at Hartford Stage Company. Prior to coming to Two

River, John co-founded and led Affi nity Company Theater, a

production company dedicated to bringing daring new works

from around the world to New York, and Playwright’s Realm, an

off-Broadway company that produces new plays by emerging

artists. He has been a Tony Award nominator, a consultant

for the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous other

organizations, and he has taught at New York University and

Yale University. John currently teaches in the graduate school

at Columbia University. He received his BA from George

Washington University and his MFA from the University of

Massachusetts at Amherst.

Michael Hurst (Managing Director) joined Two River as

Managing Director in May 2011. Michael was on the staff of The

Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival for 16 years,

including four years as General Manager and six as Managing

Director. Michael was responsible for all fi nancial aspects of the

productions at The Public Theater and Central Park’s Delacorte

Theater, and was part of the senior leadership team responsible

for the annual operating budget of up to $16 million. During his

tenure at The Public, he oversaw the Broadway transfers of

many productions, including Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori

Parks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Elaine Stritch at

Liberty; and Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, or

Change, all of which were directed by George C. Wolfe. Michael

was also part of all strategic planning for the theater, including

its artistic leadership transition and the opening of Joe’s Pub,

now considered one of the country’s best small venues for

music and performance. Most recently, Michael was Chief

Operating Offi cer of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which

presents the prestigious New York Film Festival. At the Film

Society, he managed the growth necessary to support the new

three-theater, $40-million facility that opened in June 2011. His

work in the commercial theater includes serving as Executive

Producer for San Francisco-based producer Carole Shorenstein

Hayes, starting her New York offi ce and creating a strategic

plan to develop new theatrical work. Michael is a member of The

Broadway League and served as Vice President for the League

of Off-Broadway Theatres & Producers for six years. He is a

graduate of Rutgers University.

Robert M. Rechnitz (Executive Producer) founded Two River

Theater Company in 1994. An educator, writer, and director,

he is one of New Jersey’s most esteemed theater leaders.

He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado and was a

Professor of American Literature at Monmouth University for

35 years, contributing scholarly articles and short stories to

various academic journals. As Two River’s Executive Producer,

he oversaw the theater’s move from Monmouth University in

West Long Branch to the Algonquin Arts in Manasquan. While

the company was in residence in Manasquan, he planned for

and oversaw the building of a state-of-the-art, two-theater

complex in Red Bank as Two River’s permanent home. He

directed the opening production in the new building, the classic

American comedy You Can’t Take It with You, in 2005. Among

the other notable productions he has directed at Two River are

Curse of the Starving Class (for which he received The Star-

Ledger’s nomination for Best Director of a Comedy), True West,

A View from the Bridge, The Glass Menagerie, Thieves’ Carnival,

Uncle Vanya, American Buffalo, and Barefoot in the Park. He has

been honored with Monmouth University’s 2001 Maurice Pollak

Award for Distinguished Community Service, and the 2007

Celebration of Excellence Award from the Monmouth Country

Arts Council. At the start of the new century, The Star-Ledger

named him one of “20 New Jerseyans to Watch.”
