SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY Acts 5:12-16 During the seven weeks of the Easter season, the first reading is always from the Acts of the Apostles. Its author, Luke, saw the history of salvation in three great stages: In the first stage, found in the Old Testament, God’s Spirit raises up leaders and prophets to guide the people; in the second stage, found in Luke’s Gos-pel, the Spirit anoints Jesus as God’s holy one; and in the third stage, described in the book of Acts, the Spirit works in the Church, fulfilling Christ’s promise to be with us at the end of time. Revelation 1:9-13, 17-19 This year during the Easter season, the second reading each Sunday is from the book of Revelation. Revelation is an Easter book because it focuses on the Risen Jesus and our final victory over sin and death. Today’s passage describes the call that the author received to convey God’s message of hope to Christians who were being persecuted toward the end of the first century. John 20:19-31 This wonderful Gospel story is read all three years of the lectionary cycle. It records the first post-resurrection appearance of Jesus and provides us with an archetypal experi-ence of doubt, struggle, and final assent in faith. It is every Christian’s experience. Reflect: How have fear and doubt kept you from reaching out in service in your Parish?

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

BONA PASCHA!! This is the greeting that will be

used all throughout Italy today and for the next eight days! It means Good Passover; not the Jewish Passover but the Passover to the Lord Jesus through death to life. (This year, the Jewish Passover began at sunset on Holy Saturday at the same time we began the great celebration of Christ’s resurrection.)

This greeting summarized the hope we celebrate today; that we who follow the Lord will eventually follow Him through death into eternal life.

All European languages based in Latin use some version of this greeting. The Poles and other Slavic people will greet one another with a phrase meaning a Joyous Alleluia! Only English and other German based languages will say Happy Easter which refers not to Christ, but to Oester, the Germanic goddess of spring.

Good Passover to you and yours from all of us who serve you at St. Mary Magdalen.

Our Pastoral Staff: Sr. Maryetta Churches, Roxanne Hundsrucker, Sr. Joyce Hoile, Diane Kubus, Dave Scharf, Margaret Callaghan, Stasia Eisenhut, Jim Chevalier, Gary Prise, Steve Schulte, Devon Wolfe, Erin Wolfe, Mary Walker and Fr. Dave Howell Our Office Staff: Sandi Phillips, Gayle Zawisa, Karen MacDonald, Megan Tierney, and Jeri Gawlowski Our Maintenance Staff: Dan Tuthill, Kathleen Gehring and Linda Barach Our Preschool Staff: Amanda Faiola, Sue Abraham, Wende Cofield, Kathy Riccardi, Amy Baerwalde, Bobbi Brown, and Emily Davidson.

EASTER WEEK Today and the next 8 days are a

continuous celebration of Easter (Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, etc.) This Easter Wednesday will be a special Liturgy with all those who were Baptized and or received into the Church on Holy Saturday. I invite you to come rejoice with them!

THE RESURRECTION TOWER Our bell tower is

also a columbarium for the interment of ashes. It has 1,500 niches, each holding two of sets of ashes. That is why we call it the Resurrection Tower. Last year we completed the plaza around the tower, which we used for Liturgy on Memorial Day and the Assumption. Thanks to Dan Szymanski and Randy Howell, it now has a beautiful leaded glass window made of antique glass. Two more additions are coming. Matt Weber’s mother donated a large, wonderful bronze crucifix and Gary and Darlene March are donating a beautiful bouquet of marble flowers. All these gifts will make the bell tower a chapel of hope for our loved ones.

YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan

Alleluia– Alleluia! He is Risen for sure, our hearts and our minds should be full of His Glory… I always wonder on this day as I see families come to church dressed in their finest what they are up to after Mass. Easter Egg Hunt, Brunch, Awesome Dinner with family and friends, or even digging up the Alleluia (some of my friends with little children bury many forms of the word Alleluia and dig it up Saturday night after the Vigil or Sunday morning after Mass). Easter is not just one day, but the longest season of the liturgical year. We celebrate Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord. It is a Holy Day of Obligation; the holiest day of the entire year! Then we have the Octave of Easter, which is Monday—Saturday following Easter Sunday. The Second Sunday of Easter is also called Sunday of Divine Mercy. Many churches and communities have a grand celebration of Divine Mercy. We celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, another Holy Day of Obligation, on the Thursday following the Sixth Sunday of Easter. On the Wednesday following the Seventh Sunday of Easter, we celebrate The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin of Mary (Feast Day). We close the Easter Season with Pentecost Sunday. The Easter Season I love to turn events into Journeys. Please join me on this Journey through the Easter Season with Jesus as we approach the Kingdom he promised us. I continue to become the best person he created me to be. By turning events into Journeys, I am able to keep myself in check with his plan for me. The Easter Season gives us an opportunity to add excitement into our faith life in the way we become excited about the changing season from spring to summer. Pick up a little white book in the Gathering Area to use or take on a novena, or other traditional prayer you have not prayed in a while, and make a daily commitment to strengthening your prayer life.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker

Happy Easter! What a Lent this has been. So much growth in so many relationships for me personally and I hope you as well. Through the power of pray-er, I have been filled with joy and peace during a difficult time. Even in the weeks I was overwhelmed with caring for my dad, I felt His strength and was encouraged by His presence with me. God is real and tangible in all of lives. He is risen and walks with us, beside us and among us. Happy Easter to you and your family!

Two weeks ago, we spent the weekend on re-treat with youth from St. John’s. It was a great week-end and I believe many of the participants grew in relationship with Him. There was time spent in pray-er, reflection, liturgy and fun. It was a weekend well spent during Lent to recommit ourselves to prayer, Lenten sacrifices and relationship.

We do not have a meeting this weekend but will gather again next week on the 28th. Look for the graduation liturgy sign up in May for the reception on June 2nd. All 2019 graduates are invited and encour-aged to participate.

EDGE Our last meeting is Monday April 29th. I hope that

you are able to join us to wind our year of EDGE up

together. If you are a future EDGE’er still in 5th

grade, you are welcome to come and join us to see

what the buzz is about. We would love to meet you

now!

St. Mary Magdalen Weekend Retreat for Women

“From Chaos to Order”

April 26-28, 2019

At St. Francis Retreat Center, DeWitt

This weekend is mapped out in 12 "Rules for Life" across our six talks. Our goal is to give you hope--hope that rises from interior order in an otherwise chaotic world. You'll be presented with an antidote to the chaos of our day, in tips and suggestions, prayers and reflec-tions. Order can replace chaos when we apply some basic "rules" for daily living that include prayer time with Jesus and joyful living with our family and community. Peace surrounds us and becomes the channel of peace that affects the lives around us. Order reigns in the sure knowledge that we can change the world, one lost soul at a time. Register with the St. Francis Retreat Center by calling 517-669-8321 or at www.stfrancis.ws

online.

The Charity and Justice Ministry team wishes you the opportunity to encounter peace and renewal in your life. We work at removing the root causes of social injustice and attempt to meet the basic needs of people who cannot provide for themselves. Please take time to look at the Opportunities to Serve in the Gathering Space to see where you might apply the many gifts God has blessed you with. We thank you for your support of our projects. If you are interested in becoming involved in this ministry, or would like more information about it, con-tact Ken Kuna at [email protected] or by phone at 734.751.4100. Charity & Justice meets the sec-ond Tuesday of the month at 7 pm. Many hands make God’s work lighter.

Our semi-annual St. Vincent de Paul clothing drive is

scheduled for May 4th/5th, 2019. The St. Vincent de

Paul Society helps 1000s of people every year in all

kinds of ways and your donations help to support all

of these endeavors. So clean out your closets!

Please donate your gently used, clean clothing and

linens. You can make a difference.

AWAITING the RESURRECTION

St. Mary Magdalen has two places for the interment of cremains: the Resurrection Tower (Columbarium) and the Shrine of the Cross. The policies governing the Res-urrection Tower and the Shrine of the Cross can be viewed on our parish website.

The interior of the Tower has 1,500 niches; each holds one or two special urns. The names of each person interred there will be engraved on their urn and niche. The parishioner fee for a space in the Tower is $2,600. In addition, there is a fee for en-graving the names on the urns and the niche.

The names of one or two people whose ashes are buried at a space at the Shrine of the Cross will be engraved on the stone marking their resting place. The parishioner cost for a space at the Shrine of the Cross is $500, plus the add-ed cost of engraving the stone.

If you would like to make arrangements for a space, ei-ther in the Resurrection Tower or at the Shrine of the Cross, please contact Gayle Zawisa in our parish office (810.229.8624) for an appointment.
