Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we experience

together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our worship service is

designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you will

find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available. Leaders: Pastor Nathan Strutz and Vicar Eric Melso Pianist: Lisa Hermanson Cantor: Luanne Ritsema

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the Christian Worship hymnal located under the pew chairs.

We will begin by watching the January 2016 edition of the WELS Connection

Who is your God? For millennia people have known that a higher being exists. As they planted their crops, hoping for rain, they assumed they needed to inspire the “gods” to produce rain so their crops would grow. They tried to figure out who was their GOD. Ever since the Fall into sin, human beings have wanted the status of “god.” They want to be GOD. They want to play GOD. But who exactly is the one true God? What is he like? What are his attributes? What is his will? What does he do? What amazing blessings become ours as we get to know our God better? Pastor Gary Pufahl, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Big Bend, WI, and chairman of

GATHERING RITE OF BAPTISM Leader: God’s people long to gather together for strength from God and for mutual encouragement. This alternate beginning for worship is intended for use not only when there is a baptism but may be used on any occasion to remind God’s people of Baptism’s continuing blessings. The pastor conducts the gathering rite at the font.

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. During the introduction to the hymn, water is poured into the font.

Leader: I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

People: Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. (John 3:5,6) Leader: Surely we were sinful at birth, sinful from the time our mothers conceived us. (Psalm 51:5)

People: But we were washed, we were sanctified, we were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) Leader: As baptized children of God, we confess our sins.

People: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Vine and Branches Taste Test? Ever wondered about Vine and Branches? Would like to try it out, but not really sure? Want to see what Vine and Branches is all about, but nervous about signing up? Vine and Branches is a small group, in home, sermon based Bible study that helps us grow closer to Jesus, grow closer to each other and bear much fruit. January 10 there will be a Vine and Branches taste test. Following the service and through the Bible study time there will be fellowship like there is at Vine and Branches, a sermon discussion like there is at Vine and Branches, as well as members from Vine and Branches who have participated available to answer questions about Vine and Branches. The goals of this are to give everyone a chance to experience a little of Vine and Branches, answer questions and encourage more people to participate in Vine and Branches. We can't perfectly replicate that small group in home feel in a large group at church, but we are praying this taste test will give you a feel for the fun and fellowship that happens and encourage your participation in the winter/spring session. Sign ups for the next session will be available that day. Join us! If interested and unable to attend, speak with Alex Pudlo, Ned Reimer or Pastor. Un-decorating the Christmas Trees - January 10th Sunday, January 10th we need your help taking the Christmas trees down & putting the decorations away after bible study. Leader: Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5:25-27).

Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all

your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray. Almighty God, you have filled us with the new light of the Word who became flesh and lived among us. Let the light of our faith shine in all that we do; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

THE WORD FIRST LESSON: 1 SAMUEL 16:1-13 NIV

Samuel Anoints David 1The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”

2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

The LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”

4 Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.”

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said,

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death:

People: You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold. Leader: Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging:

People: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death. Leader: Prince of Peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope:

People: Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel. Leader: Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn:

People: Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do. Leader: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

Leader: Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph.

All: Amen. Leader: We join in the Lord’s Prayer:

“The LORD has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 2 All: Refrain

Why do the nations conspire* and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD* and against his Anointed One.

Refrain

The One enthroned in heaven laughs;* the Lord scoffs at them.

Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,* “I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

I will proclaim the decree of the LORD:* He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SERMON BASED ON: LUKE 3: 21,22

Jesus is Your Substitute!

Questions to consider while listening to the sermon:

1. What kind of Substitute is Jesus?

2. With whom did Jesus identify?

3. Why was Jesus baptized?

4. Would you identify yourself as a sinner? Really?

5. What connections are there between Jesus' death and resurrection and your baptism?

6. What will you/won't you do, since you are baptized?

7. Why do we give baptism honor?

8. What was so amazing about the scene at Jesus' baptism?

9. What's good enough to please God?

10. What did Jesus do that is unlike anything any other brother has done?

For further discussion:

Share something you wish you could find a tap out for.

Discuss ways to remember baptism for yourself and remind your children and others about the blessings of baptism.

Talk about the difference between Jesus as Substitute and Jesus as example. Which do you think is more important?

Discuss the amazing scene at Jesus' baptism.

SECOND LESSON: TITUS 3:4-7 NIV

4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Leader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God. VERSE OF THE DAY

CONFESSION OF FAITH - Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen. Please be seated CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (all the children are invited to join at the altar area for a devotion)
