Deficit Hawks create fakePres. candidate for politicalpoint

His name is Hugh Jidette, andhes running for president.Theres just one problem: hesJidette doesnt exist, hes a

political point for a deficitreduction organization.

The Peter G. PetersenFoundation created thecandidate as a part of a newnationwide campaign to fightincreased borrowing and raisingthe national debt. Their primaryway of displaying it is with theirnew, yet fake, candidate for

    president.

The campaign, called Owe No,evolved in late Novemberfollowing the 2010 Midtermswhen they sought out big mediabuys at political websites such

as POLITICO, MSNBC and theHuffington Post. Their biggestmove was to promote an eye-catching 50-something manwho looked Presidential.

The name, Hugh Jidette, has itsown implications to the

    organization (its pronouncedHuge Debt).

The main point that Owe No ispushing is increasing spendingand lowering taxes will putgovernment on the breadlinedue to increasing debts. Whilethe point is fiscally sound, theorganization doesnt provide analternative (such as cutting

    spending or increasing taxes).

The Jidette campaign alsofeatures a Twitter account withridiculous tweets about federalspending. The user name is@HughJidette.

    I firmly believe we should

not leave our debt to ourchildren. We should leave itto our great-great-greatgrandchildren!

With 2 years before the firestarts burning, the GOP field isperpetually being coy aboutprospective runs for thePresidency. With Sarah Palin

sending mixed signals and MittRomney playing a lower-endstrategy, its all about posturingfor the big run against Obama.

Sarah Palin: Palin has become themedia headliner for the GOP in2010. With the endorsementgame locked down, her nod forcandidates meant success inthe GOP House races. Despite

this, Palin does have herunfavorables. Looking atprospective polling, Palin willhave to work on her favorabilityin states that are important forthe GOP nomination but lessimportant in the GeneralElection.

UPSIDE: Big name, big race andonly a Mama Bear can take hold

of the country. With 2010momentum on her side, Palinmade a huge splash across thecountry. Even bigger is her newbook tour which softens upGoing Rogue as she does somepre-campaign campaigning.Palins new show Sarah Palins

Alaska brings to light a 1970sreminiscence of Jimmy CartersKiller Rabbit Attack.

DOWNSIDE: Palin is still makingblunders across the country likenot taking up an interview withKatie Couric. Unlike thePresidnets avoidance of FOXNews, Palins effort to avoid amajor broadcast news network

sends greater signals. Herblunder on the Bush Doctrinewas huge in 2008, but aninterview two years later couldput it past her. In a newer

headline maker, Palin slammedJohn F. Kennedy for runningaway from his Catholicism in a1960 speech about a personalseparation of church and stateas President of the UnitedStates (a fear that plagued many

Americans in 1960, and plaguedvoters in 2008 in regards to MittRomney).

HEADLINE: SarahPAC is facingserious scrutiny after one of itscontributions to Joshua Livestro,Dutch Conservative journo, israising eyebrows about Palinsplans to run in 2012. Thecontributions center aroundLivestros advising on theEuropean Debt Crisis. The Dutch

journalist hid his work with Palinunder a shell company in the

US, begging the question: whyhide? SarahPAC hasntanswered calls regardingLivestros work as all eyes areon Palins Iowa book tour. Moreat Mother Jones

Mitt Romney:As the mostpresidential looking person inthe GOP field, Mitt Romney hasto bring a stellar effort between2010 and 2012. While Palin maybe the media darling (orpunching bag) Mitt Romney had

an electric reception at theBakersfield BusinessConference in October thatoutdid Sarah Palin and canconnect with voters. In his

preptime, Mitts going to haveto strategize on how to beat ouPalin on issues and onpersonality (the latter may notbe very difficult). He spent a lotof money getting his name outin the open in 2008 and now heshould be able to capitalize onthat.

UPSIDE: Romney could pickup numerous McCain delegatesfrom the West (especiallyCalifornia, where the Tea Partyis not as strong as other states)and moving in on theNortheast.

DOWNSIDE: Romney is goingto have to answer toRomneyCare in many states hetook in 2008 and in states he

wants to win in 2012. Likewise,Romney will have to avoid orpivot from a potential gaffe onMormonism in order to keep hismessage on the issues.

conservative Tea Party basethat is backing Sarah Palin. MittRomney will take a chunk of theRepublican establishment andmany independent voters. MikeHuckabee will need to syphon

off Tea Party and establishmentvoters (nearly the impossible) tocome into a good second place.

UPSIDE: He has some nameidentification and has a base ofsupporters in the south andmidwest.

DOWNSIDE: His name isHuckabee (Its never gotten very

far) and hes got to pull of theimpossible with voter types(uniting Tea Partiers andestablishment Republicans) inorder to be in the running for anomination grab.

POLLING: The most effectivepolling for pre-2012 voting

comes from QuinnipacUniversity. In it, voters giveRomney the White House overObama, but GOP voters willgive Palin the nomination.Ridiculous? We thought so.

When placed head-to-headagainst Obama, Mitt Romneyedged out the 44th President45-44, Mike Huckabee would tie

Obama and Palin would lose40-48. The main maneuvergiving Romney the win isindependents, who havent hada favorability of Palin since2008. Romney would take theindependent swing of voters, the same voters who gave

Republicans the House and aslim minority in the Senate.

Many news organizations usingthe polling data make the claimthat Palin has a lock on the

nomination. Not so. In the GOPsectioned polling, 19% ofRepublican respondents saidthat they would pick Sarah Palinin a 2012 Primary held today. However, Romney scored 18%and Huckabee 17%.

Naturally, all is not cut out forSarah Palins Republicannomination victory. In fact, she

should be very fearful of thesenumbers as Romney andHuckabee are defeating orholding the President(respectively) and shes losing tothe President by an 8-pointmargin.

2012 BOOK SHELFThe foot in the door for the 2012 campaign is a nice long coast-to-coast book tour aimed at bring the topic ofconversation around the soon-to-be Presidential candidates. Sarah Palin has just started her America by Heart

tour with stops in Iowa and other big primary states. Romney ended his No Apology tour before the November 2election and Mike Huckabee is underway with his Cant Wait Till Christmas/A Simple Christmas tour in the Eastand West Coasts.

Governor-Elect Jerry Brown. Thats the reality forthe Republicans who dealt with the hitch in thenationwide tidal wave of conservative values. TheNovember General Election was a cleardemonstration of California exceptionalism inpolitics (though it is worth noting that Californiansreally dont like their own politicians anyway).

    FRUGALITY: GENUINE OR SMOKESCREEN?

With Jerry Brown taking Sacramento back, 28years since he left as Governor, California has toexpect a plan for the next four to eight years. ForBrown, his transition will be done in a calm, cooland collected approach. That said, Browndoesnt have a traditional transition team.

In his campaign office in Oakland, Brown isworking with former campaign volunteers to getthrough appointments and an agenda that he

probably will have to kiss off. Browns reasoningfor not taking a K Street office for the transition:saving money.

This is where Brown begins his journey to swayfiscal conservatives towards him in four years. By

ditching the transition office, the limo, theGovernors Mansion, the suits (OK, so maybe notthe suits) Brown demonstrates his ability to beconservative on the budget. But in the end, thesemoves could easily be a facade for Browns in-office plans when dealing with the State Budget.

    THE AGENDA

Top priority in the transition is the budget deficit. With Arnold on his way out and an estimated $25billion deficit on the way, Brown is going to haveto work out spending cuts or voter-approved taxhikes. Luckily, for Brown, the leadership in the

Assembly and the Senate are willing to work withhim. Unlike Arnold, Speaker of the AssemblyJohn Perez has pushed for budget negotiationswith the currently powerless Gov-Elect.

If Brown wants to have a successful transition,

hell want to have full disclosure on his methodsfor tackling the deficit (once hes decided onthem). Out of the gate, a plan on the budget willgive Californians some confidence in their newChief Executive. Id bet that hes going todamage many non-constitutional bureaucracies

Jerry Brown may have rejected a transition office, but transition is more important thananything for the next Governor of California

before he touches organizationslike the Prison System, whohelped him valiantly triumphover Whitman.

In relation to the budget,Browns team will have toaddress widespread

unemployment (especially in theCentral Valley) and how best toattract private industries toCalifornia.

SIDENOTE: Id like to think thatJerry would continue theTheres always room at the top

    ads with him skiing).

One thing that Republicansdont have to worry about, fornow, is judicial appointments.Brown will be lucky to getDeukmejians two appointmentsto the High Court in the nextfour years.

In a separate, yet somewhatrelated topic, Brown may haveto address illegal immigrationwithin his first two years inoffice. After the Supreme Courtruled that illegal immigrantscould get in-state tuition tostate universities, Democrats

might raise a pathway tocitizenship plan. Likewise,Republicans will stick to borderenforcement with the CaliforniaNational Guard.

Meg Whitman could have beencalled dedicted to one issuethroughout the campaign. Thatissue was education. Brownwas able to grab the youth vote

in this election because many ofthe youth in the public universitysystem were fed up with theCSU/UCs ongoing tuition hikes.

If Brown wants the youth, education will have to be apriority sometime in this term.

    IN RE: LT. GOV-ELECT

Lets put it this way, the Lt.Governor doesnt do much inthe public eye. He is very muchthe Vice President of StatePolitics. He stays inWashington, does some light

campaigning, but doesnt getnotoriety outside of the SacBeeand his hometown newspaper.

So, what will Jerry Brown andGavin Newsom do as the two ofthe highest executives in thestate? Your guess is as good asmine. It would be nice to seethe Lt. Gov get outside of theCapitol Building and address

the electorate on real issues.Between now and January,Californians will hopefully havea better picture of what toexpect from Jerry Brown andGavin Newsom as a team.

During his 1974 Campaign tobecome governor, the second in hisfamily, Jerry Brown succeededformer actor and conservativeRonald Reagan as Governor of

    California.

Now, in 2010, Jerry Brown returns tothe Governors Office to replaceanother former actor: ArnoldSchwarzenegger to become the 39thGovernor of California

Possibly testing out the waters for a 2012Presidential run, former Governor of Arkansasand 2008 Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabeeis on a nationwide book tour to promote his twoChristmas-themed booksA Simple Christmasand Cant Wait Till Christmas.

Huckabees tour, which is being run at the sametime as Former Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palins

America by HeartBook Tour, has providedHuckabee the opportunity to speak at the Nixonand Reagan Presidential Libraries whilepromoting his two bestselling books.

Along with these two books, Gov. Huckabeehosts the Huckabee Report, a radio show, andHuckabee on Fox News Channel.

Huckabee made a stop in Fresno, where the AlexTavlian got a chance to talk to him about a rangeof topics:

Alex: What inspired you to writeA Simple

    Christmas?

Huckabee: My publisher called and asked me todo a book on Christmas. I wrote it and found it tobe very therapeutic. Ive written eight other booksand this, by far, is my favorite. When I met peoplepromoting this book, we didnt talk about thestories in my book; most of the time it was theirpersonal stories of Christmas.

Alex: As many people who have readA Simple

Christmascan attest, Cant Wait TillChristmas is a shortened, yet powerful

extension of your full length book. Why did

you decide to write the Childrens Book?

    Continued on Next Page

The Former Gov. of Arkansas talked to the Daily

Dues about his books (A Simple Christmas and

Cant Wait Till Christmas) along with some

political talk and a potential 2012 bid for the White

Huckabee: WhenA Simple Christmas came outlast year, the response was very strong. I wantedto give parents a way to provide a real story thathas a message, not a screaming message, but amessage that goes beyond the give gifts and getgifts idea. The lesson that children, when readingthis book, is that patience is a virtue and thatChristmas is about relationships and trust.

Alex: Do you believe that Christmas today has

become devalued as a religious holiday and is

    becoming a Hallmark holiday?

Huckabee: Thats exactly whats happened.People are afraid to even say Merry Christmasnow they say Happy Holidays, SeasonsGreetings or something like that.

Alex: While Thanksgiving has just passed,

what are you thankful for this year?

Huckabee: Im thankful for a healthy family, foremployment in multiple areas (TV, radio andwriting). Along with that, Im thankful for beingborn and being American.

Alex: Youve gone from Pastor to Politician to

Media Commentator and Writer, what have

    you learned along the way?

Huckabee: Ive learned that everyone has valueand no one is boring. From the mailman to theTSA agent at the scanners, every person hasvalue.

Alex: Here at the Daily Dues, were huge fans

of Twitter and Facebook. What impact has

social media in your work on TV, writing and

    politicking?

Huckabee: Social media, especially Twitter andFacebook, are a big part of what I do. It allowsme to communicate with people who areinterested in what I have to say; easily thegreatest way to communicate. I started using

social networking in my 2008 Presidentialcampaign; that campaign was almost entirelyinternet-based.

Alex: I received ten questions from readers

asking the same thing and its the elephant in

the room: this book tour, and your lecture at

the Nixon Library, has everyone convinced

that this is a barometer for a 2012 Presidential

bid. With two years to go, what does 2012

    have in store for you?

Huckabee: I dont know yet if Ill be making a runfor the White House in two years. I am not ruling[a Presidential bid] out at this time. The book touralso isnt the singular gauge that will make mydecision. Im trying to see peoples response tome; whether they want me to run or if they wantme to stay on TV and radio.

Alex: Brice Austin from Fresno asks: While

health care costs skyrocket and the Federal

solution doesnt seem to address the problem, what is your solution to Health Care and how

does it differ from the President?

Huckabee: Reform, primarily, is not in healthcare; its about health. To reform our health caresystem, we have to engage in preventative healthcare rather than curative care.
