GAZETTE The temperature is rising, and so is your electricity bill. But by trying these simple ps, you can keep your apartment cool and comfortable, while also cung your cooling costs. It’s good for the environment and good for your wallet! 1. Use fans. The interesng thing about fans is that they don’t actually cool a room, they just make it feel cooler, by blowing the hot air away from your body. Fans can make a room feel up to 7 degrees cooler, and they use much less electricity than the air condioner. So make sure your ceiling fans are turned on high before you turn the temperature down. If you don’t have ceiling fans in your apartment (or not enough ceiling fans), buy some inexpensive box fans to place strategically throughout your apartment. The inial investment will pay off when you get your electricity bill. 2. Replace the air filter. If your air filters are dirty and clogged, the air condioner can’t work as effecvely. This is bad news for you and your wallet. Plus, it just increases the likelihood your air condioner unit will stop working all together, and then you’ll really be hot. So show your AC unit some love and change the filter. You can pick up new filters for a few bucks at a grocery store or home improvement store. Just be sure to look and see what size filter you need before you go. For best results, replace the filters once a month. Mark it on your calendar or set a reminder on your phone to make sure it gets done. 3. Cover your windows. Window treatments are just a design element: they can help keep heat out, thereby reducing your electricity bill. If you have blinds, keep them closed. Same thing if you have curtains. If you are looking to purchase new window treatments for your apartment, know that lighter colored fabrics deflect the sun’s rays beer. You can also buy insulated curtains, which will do the best job of keeping the heat out. 4. Turn off heat generators. Running electronics, like your computer and television, all day will put out a lot of heat. Be sure to turn them off when you aren’t using them, and unplug them, too (even when turned off, they will sll emit heat). Using the oven or stove will also heat up your apartment in a flash. It’s a good excuse to get take out or sck to simple dinners that don’t involve a lot of cooking during the summer months. And if you must bake a batch of cookies, try waing unl later in the evening, when the temperature outside has cooled down. 5. Avoid seng the thermostat excessively low. Sure, it’s tempng to crank the air condioner down to 65 aſter spending any length of me outdoors when it’s 100 degrees (or higher). But this won’t cool your apartment any faster and, even worse, you might forget that you set it extremely low, resulng in unnecessary cooling costs. Instead, turn the temperature down to what you would normally set it at. Even beer, figure out how to program your thermostat, and your apartment will already be cooled off when you walk in the door every evening. The temperature is rising, and so is your electricity bill. But by trying these simple tips, you can keep your apartment cool and comfortable, while also cutting your cooling costs. It’s good for the environment and good for your wallet!

1. Use fans. The interesting thing about fans is that they don’t actually cool a room, they just make it feel cooler, by blowing the hot air away from your body. Fans can make a room feel up to 7 degrees cooler, and they use much less electricity than the air conditioner. So make sure your ceiling fans are turned on high before you turn the temperature down. If you don’t have ceiling fans in your apartment (or not enough ceiling fans), buy some inexpensive box fans to

place strategically throughout your apartment. The initial investment will pay off when you get your electricity bill.

2. Replace the air filter. If your air filters are dirty and clogged, the air conditioner can’t work as effectively. This is bad news for you and your wallet. Plus, it just increases the likelihood your air conditioner unit will stop working all together, and then you’ll really be hot.

If you are looking to purchase new window treatments for your apartment, know that lighter colored fabrics deflect the sun’s rays better. You can also buy insulated curtains, which will do the best job of keeping the heat out.

4. Turn off heat generators. Running electronics, like your computer and television, all day will put out a lot of heat. Be sure to turn them off when you aren’t using them, and unplug them, too (even when turned off, they will still emit heat). Using the oven or stove will also heat up your apartment in a flash. It’s a good excuse to get take out or stick to simple dinners that don’t involve a lot of cooking during the summer months. And if you must bake a batch of cookies, try waiting until later in the evening, when the temperature outside has cooled down.

5. Avoid setting the thermostat excessively low. Sure, it’s tempting to crank the air conditioner down to 65 after spending any length of time outdoors when it’s 100 degrees (or higher). But this won’t cool your apartment any faster and, even worse, you might forget that you set it extremely low, resulting in unnecessary cooling costs. Instead, turn the temperature down to what you would normally set it at. Even better, figure out how to program your thermostat, and your apartment will already be cooled off when you walk in the door every evening.

Spray Bottle Art

1. Water down the paint – Start with a small amount of water and 4-5 big drops of paint. You want the color to be vibrant and thick enough that it won’t drip.

2. Cut out a simple shape – You will need either a computer & printer to print your shape, a die-cut machine, or electronic cutting machine like a Cricut. You could still definitely do this project without any of those, using a simple hand-cut shape.

3. Attach the shape inside the cardboard box – Use straight pins to pin onto a piece of white construction paper.

4. Start spraying! Get a good amount of paint on the paper, but not so much that it’s dripping a lot. As you can see, you don’t need every inch of the paper covered. Let it dry for a few minutes, take off the silhouette, and that’s it!
