Vicky and Bruce Lewis may have left the rain and gloom of Seattle for the brighter clime of the Texas

Hill Country, but they brought their love of good coffee with them.

“It’s so cold there, everyone has a cup of coffee in their hands most of the time,” Vicky recalls. “We loved the warmth and friendliness of Dripping Springs, but we couldn’t find a really good cup of coffee – especially after noon or on Sundays.”

The couple solved that dilemma by opening their own coffee house – Maza-ma Coffee Company - on Mercer Street. “Mazama” (Native American for “moun-tain goat”) has a special connection for the Lewises and their two children: it’s the name of a small town in the Cascade Mountains of eastern Washington where the family had a cabin for many years.

“It’s the one name we could all agree on,” Vicky says with a grin.

With a more serious look, she adds that the death of a beloved brother spurred her to reexamine her life as a cor-porate employee and realize that time is fleeting. “Bruce and I had always talked about one day owning our own business. My fear of regretting not acting on my dreams became bigger than my fear of failure. So we took the leap.”

Changing the former iron works building into an open and pleasant atmo-sphere involved a lot of labor – accom-plished in a large part by Bruce and Vicky themselves. Several windows and a door were cut into an exterior wall, bringing in natural light and a view of the side patio. and built pub tables for seating along a wall.

Throughout the remodel, they used repurposed 100-year-old long leaf pine, mixed in with lapped siding and even metal plumbing pipes to create what Vicky half-jokingly refers to as “indus-trial farmhouse style.”

Customers have the option of sitting inside at tables or the coffee bar, or out-side on the patio.

A small room off the main dining area has a brightly colored children’s table with plenty of toys and puzzles to keep tots happily occupied through their parents’ lattes. A large chalkboard com-

munity calendar keeps everyone up with upcoming events at Mazama and the larger Dripping Springs community.

Perhaps Mazama’s most unusual fea-ture is the Flex Room – a multi-purpose room available for conferences, classes, workshops, trainings, or entertaining.

Vicky is currently drawing up a cal-endar of workshops that Mazama will host there in the New Year.

As for the coffee, Vicky and Bruce are adamant about using the best coffee roast they can find. They chose Cuvee brand – sustainably grown and then roasted near-by in Spicewood.

“Most Austin specialty coffee houses serve Cuvee,” Vicky reports, and the pos-itive response from Mazama’s growing customer base would seem to agree with their choice.

The best aroma of the day, she says, is every morning at 6:15 am when she pours the first bag of coffee beans into the

hopper. Coffee-making equipment at Mazama is top of the line. A bright red LaMarzocco espresso machine promi-nently parked at the coffee bar was im-ported from Italy and is rarer, she says, than a Ferrari.

Mazama serves a full array of cof-fee and espresso drinks, teas, chai, hot

chocolate, bottled drinks, fruit smooth-ies and freshly baked pastries. They also sell packaged Cuvee coffee beans so cof-fee enthusiasts can experience the same great coffee at home.

AUSTIN HAre you ready to have more energy and more confidence? Then the MEND program could be right for you. Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It! (MEND), is a program designed for children ages seven to 13 years of age and their parents. It’s offered to help families struggling to find the right balance of food and exercise, and the good news is, thanks to a generous grant from the St. David’s Foundation, it’s free.

Beginning in January, MEND will be offered from six locations in greater Aus-tin and from one location in Hays County. Winter sessions begin January 12 and run through March 2013. Each program lasts 10 weeks and meets twice per week, typically a weekday evening and Saturday morning. Parents must attend with their child.

MEND combines three key elements of safe, effective weight management and sus-tained lifestyle change: healthy eating, regular physical activity, and behavior change. Children and families who attend the MEND Program learn important skills and knowledge to help them manage their weight and feel fitter, healthier, and happier for the rest of their lives.

Winter ‘13 locations include Galindo Elementary in Southeast Austin, Pillow Ele-mentary in North Central Austin, Popham Elementary in Del Valle, Rodriguez Elemen-tary in Southeast Austin, School in central Austin (TBA), Science Hall Elementary in Hays County and UT Elementary in East Austin.

If you are ready to get moving and enjoy physical activity, the MEND program is here to help.

FYI • Space is limited, so enroll today. Call Missy Quintela at 512-236-9622 or email [email protected] for more information and to register.

Reliable Residential CLEANING

By LaureL robertson

If “feedstore” and “bling” don’t sound compatible to you, just ask Roy Rog-ers – or at least his horse, Trigger. Both

(bling and Trigger) can be found in Robin’s at Rippy’s – a new store in the old part of Rippy’s Ranch Supply in Dripping Springs.

Robin Rippy Scott, daughter of Rip-py Ranch Supply owner Pug Rippy (and grand-daughter and great-grand-daughter of its previous owners) recently opened her new business in the old mohair warehouse on Mercer Street to supply cowgirls and their friends with jewelry, gifts and acces-sories.

Robin works as a full-time software specialist for Dell Computer. But since 1992 when she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in fash-ion merchandising, she’s stayed involved in some way with her “first love” – mer-chandising - whether it’s been as a full-time retail worker or marketing her eclectic mix of fashion and fancies online and at Wimberley Market Days.

The business is an extended family affair. With her mother’s encouragement, Robin remodeled the original part of the family’s feedstore and hired her cousin, Becky Rippy, to run the new enterprise. Next door, her husband Shorty Scott helps her dad Pug run the feedstore.

Though the old wood floor creaks (and even moves up and down in spots!), the old building makes a charmingly rus-

Shopping is fun at Robin’s at Rippy’s

You’ll find plenty of bling at the new Robin’s at Rippy’s on Mercer Street. Just a couple of examples of shopping delights, the Longhorn necklace TOP and shiny and colorful bangle bracelets ABOVE. Photos courtesy Robin’s at Rippy’s.

When you visit Robin’s at Rippy’s, don’t miss the perfectly restored, old-fash-ioned mechanical horse, Trigger. And, just like the good old days, you can still enjoy a ride on this western treasure for only 25 cents. Photo courtesy Robin’s at Rippy’s.

tic backdrop for the sparkles and bright colors in Robin’s mer-chandise. She carries embellished clothing (some she embellishes herself), kids’ toys and gifts, frames, jewelry, purses, belts, shoes – to name just a few. Much, though not all – is western-themed.

Robin says she carries a particularly wide selection of toys and gifts for little boys, which are gener-ally harder to find than gifts for little girls, she thinks.

“I have four nephews and one niece,” she says, “so I understand the challenge of shopping for little boys.” Her stuffed ani-mal collection includes boy-pleasers such as bats, wolves and sharks.

A small but unusual food selection in-cludes Wind and Willows soups and dip mixes, and old-fashioned stick candy and salt water taffy. A full line of Frostie Brand sodas (root beer and other flavors) are available hot or iced.

The stand-out western feature in the store is undoubtedly the perfectly restored, old-fashioned mechanical horse Trigger, who still offers a ride for 25 cents.

Robin and her mother acquired the treasure after admiring many like it in Las Vegas on their yearly trips there to see the National Finals Rodeo. Last year her moth-er, who remembered riding one just like it when she was a child, finally decided she HAD to have it. Robin and her dad Pug each fought to have it in their own store – and, of course, there it sits in Robin’s!

The old building that houses Robin’s at Rippy’s was moved to its Mercer Street lo-cation in 1936. It was first used as a grocery store, before becoming the original Rippy Ranch Supply in 1953.

When the feedstore moved to its newer building next door (sometime in the 1960s) the old building served as a trading cen-ter of the busy mohair industry for which Dripping Springs and the surrounding Hill Country were world famous in that era.

The first thing Becky and family did when starting to remodel was clean out old bags of mohair left in the storage loft of the building.

Robin’s at Rippy’s is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Robin maintains her online business and a booth at Lone Star Gifts (just down Mercer Street) for those who want to shop on other days.

FYI • Robin’s at Rippy’s is located at 204 Mercer, just west of Rippy’s Ranch Supply. They are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit the web site at robin-sclosetds.com or call 512-571-2616.
