THE TRANS-EUROPEAN TRANSPORT NETWORK

The Orient / East-Med corridor • The Trans-European Network can contribute to boost the

competitiveness of the European economy, contribute to sustainable growth and development of the internal market.

• The concept of TEN-T core network corridors underlines the need to go further than national visions for transport and to encompass a trans-border vision on the way people and goods move.

• Any investment on the corridor in any of the nine countries that it crosses will immediately bring an added value along the entire corridor

PLANNING TARGET FOR PATHE/P CORRIDOR

• Create a high-speed rail corridor of Increased Capacity equipped with modern signalling, telecommanding, telecommunication and electrification systems fulfilling the interoperability requirements of the European railways.

• Backbone of the Greek railway network

• Interconnects the big urban centres of the country and areas with significant growth in the primary and secondary sectors

• Links to the major freight centres, main ports and Trans-European corridors.

• Part of the Core TEN-T network and of OEM corridor.

Alexandroupolis-Ormenio rail corridor upgrade.

The rail link bypasses Bosporus strait, providing an alternative for transporting containers to and from the Black Sea area. The direct link to Bulgaria is going to reduce travel time to approximately 6 hours.

• The upgrading is expected to increase the commercial speed of the freight trains by 20-30% and also to increase capacity of each freight train due to increase of the traction power following the electrification of the line.

• The electrification, the advanced signalling and the implementation of a central

management system, are expected to increase safety of rail transport, Improve operating conditions and train traffic, line capacity and service reliability.

• The operation and maintenance costs will also be reduced significantly.

Can be financed through private funding and state financial contribution

Possible revenues include rail exploitation and logistics World Investment Bank is carrying out Viability Study Key benefits

A significant number of people will have access to new clean and cost effective transportation means

It will facilitate transport of significant volumes of goods to the domestic and international market

Attraction of more international transit traffic Full exploitation of the strategic location of the country, connecting Asia and Europe

and ensuring accessibility of the Balkan countries to the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Seas

Transformation to an international freight hub between Central and Eastern Europe and Asia

Continuous logistics network by connecting all transport modes, i.e.(4 ports, 6 airports, 4 logistic hubs)
