Principal’s Report

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT: World Vision Fundraiser Last Thursday our SRC asked our students and teachers to ‘Dare to be Different’ raising funds to support our new World Vision child, Gebrehana Tekle and his family. Gebrehana is an 11-year-old boy from Ethiopia. His region in Ethiopia has been deeply affected by recurrent droughts and severe environmental degradation causing food shortages. Lack of resources and poor farming skills make it difficult for people to grow enough food for their families or to increase household incomes. By extending our generosity, we as a school can make a small difference to one child’s life and in turn he can then make a difference in his community. Well done everyone on raising $568.00 for Gebrehana.

AREA ATHLETICS APOLOGIES: In the newsletter last Tuesday, I acknowledged some of the students who represented PHPS and the district at the Sydney North Area Athletics Championships. Unfortunately, a number of students were not included in those recognised. My sincere apologies to those students and families. Congratulations to all of the students Molly A., Finlay A., Aidan H., Christian P., Hunter P., Lola D., Tom W., Matt A., Luke C., Imogen H., Caitlin B., Maya F., Julia K. and Denethi H., on representing our school and district with great sportsmanship. SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS Congratulations to the Year 6 students who have been offered placements at academically Selective High Schools in 2019! This is an outstanding result, with these positions highly prized and keenly sought. From Pennant Hills PS 11 students have been offered a place at the Selective High School of their choice. 2 students have been placed on the Reserve List and await a possible placement in the coming months. Well done Jonathan A., Dylan A., Naveka I., Daniel K., Claire K., Rhea K., Liana L., Orlando P., Eshaan S., Tim W., and Alex X. We are so proud of you! Our congratulations also to Grace B. and Denethi H. – our fingers are crossed for you! Congratulations to Alice R., for being selected into the Conservatorium High School, the only specialist music high school. Again, this achievement is significant, as the places were based on the results of examinations attracting hundreds, if not thousands, of students from the government and non-government sectors. We are very proud of our students and the success for which they, their parents and teachers have worked so hard. We wish them every success in their future learning. Of course, many other highly talented students contributed to the success of their classmates by providing challenge and collaboration. While not all of these students are moving on to selective high schools, they will undoubtedly continue to be high achievers in whichever schools they attend. Well done, Year 6 2018!

STAGE 2 OPEN DAY Yesterday our Stage 2 Open Afternoon was an opportunity for our community to understand the learning happening within the school gates at PHPS. All classes have been exploring the different climates, settlement patterns and demographic characteristics of places and then using this information and knowledge to imagine and create knowledge about what it would be like to live in different places. Two classes involved in the My Science project showcased their investigations as the culmination of this wonderfully rich inquiry based learning. They have begun to develop the practical understanding of the skills and qualities used by scientist to solve real world problems. Our aim at PHPS is for all of our students to become knowledge creators and so we provide frequent opportunities and activities for them to practice and refine their critical and creative thinking skills. Thank you to Miss Ashelford, Ms Davis, the PHHS mentors and Macquarie University staff for partnering with us on this journey of learning. Well done students for stepping out of the comfort zone of knowledge consumers and challenging yourselves to be creators of knowledge, where authentic lifelong learning occurs.

STAGE 3 COLONIAL DAY Today our Stage 3 classes brought to life their learning about The Australian Colonies and how the industrial revolution in Britain led to the need for colonies to be established in Australia, significant people of the time, aboriginal perspectives, the goldrush and the Eureka Stockade. The students relished in this experiential learning. It allowed them to observe, review and reflect on what they have heard and read about in the classroom and then critically reflect to consciously link their experiences to this knowledge. Great work Stage 3.

DROUGHT RELIEF FUNDRAISING – HERMIDALE PS

Hermidale Public School focuses on providing quality learning opportunities for all children. We strive to provide a well-rounded education that values and supports the intellectual, creative, physical and emotional development of each child. We have a commitment to ensure that quality learning and teaching are the central focus of our classroom. Education is an essential part of today's social fabric. At Hermidale PS we acknowledge this and encourage our students to work towards lifelong learning. We recognise the importance of community and are proud to be part of the Hermidale community. We encourage our

students to be positive role models now and in the future and to always 'Reach for the Stars'. Hermidale is a very small bush community approximately 8 hours’ drive from Sydney and 2 hours west of Dubbo in the central west and situated on the Barrier Highway.

A reminder we will be having a ‘Dress as a Farmer’ gold coin donation day tomorrow Wednesday 26 September, to assist Hermidale PS in setting up a Community Café’ at the school, where family and community members can go together, have a cuppa, support each other and strengthen their resolve, during these tough drought times. We invite all of the PHPS community to contribute to this cause. Donations can be made at both offices for the remainder of the term. Our last Performance Assembly, is also scheduled for tomorrow and so this may be an opportunity for families to contribute whilst visiting the school. Thank you in advance for your support. PARENTS AS PARTNERS As in previous years, our school is participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 25 September and 19 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary; however, your responses are very much appreciated, to ensure the data is reliable. We would love to have a response from every family so that the survey is truly representative of our school community, and I urge you to set aside some time to provide current feedback to the school. Please use the following link to access the survey: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/68v24 More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

APPOINTMENTS Schools are busy places and every day is full of activities. Children experience issues in their daily experiences at school and we work with children in building their resilience in being able to deal with the issues they experience. At PHPS we are committed to the learning, and wellbeing of all of our students and so work tirelessly with our parents as partners to ensure this is our mantra for our school. First and foremost with issues is communication. With children we focus on being able to express themselves so they are able to verbalise to their peers, their teacher and parents what it is that is creating the concern. If children are unable to resolve issues within their daily interactions with their peers by expressing their concerns about the issues confronting them in the correct manner then their next point of reference is an adult in the school. This may be the teacher on duty or their class teacher. Dealing with issues on the day is important to allow all surrounding facts to be collected before any opinion or action is taken.

If children report incidents to parents without having informed an adult on the day our school procedure is to touch base with your child's teacher first before making any reactions. There are always two sides to the story and children generally provide their side to their parents.

Parent issues of concern need to be handled with respect and dignity. Again the teacher is the first point of contact with student issues as teachers are their main carer for the day. In dealing with issues it is asked that respect of teachers’ responsibilities to their class and executive staff members’ responsibilities to the entire school, is considered. Teachers need to be contacted for appointments to be made and pre-warned of the issue you wish to discuss to allow investigations and preparations to be made. An appointment with the Assistant Principal can be made for issues of major concern with regard to major student incidents and appointments with the Deputy Principal or the Principal in relation to teacher performance issues of concern. Contacting the school office for such appointments is required prior to arriving at school to avoid disappointment. Office staff members assist by making contact with teaching and executive staff members to make mutually convenient appointments. They are not abreast of all staff and executive members immediate commitments and so appointments are necessary.

EXTRA CURRICULAR STELLAR SUCCESS Congratulations to Tim W. for being selected in the Arts Alive Combined School Band. Students selected perform at the highest level achieving an outstanding level of performance, musicianship and technique. Last Thursday evening, Tim represented PHPS in this and as part of a major stage concert at the Opera House. Well done Tim.

CONGRATULATIONS We would like to congratulate Mrs and Mr Dakin on the safe arrival of Oscar George Maxilian Dakin, on

Friday 21 September, 2018. We hope that Oscar’s coos and happy laughter emanate from every room of their home! We look forward meeting this new bundle of joy soon.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS A reminder that school breaks for the September holidays on Friday 28 September. Students return to school on Monday 15 October. I hope that all of our families are able to spend some quality time together during this vacation time.

Intention to Apply For Year 7 Entry to a Selective High School In 2020 Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 14 March 2019. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you will need to apply via the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from mid-September 2018 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018.
