Issue 5 I 8 April 2019

We are drawing towards the close of a very full and exciting Term 1. New staff and students have become integrated into our vibrant learning community and the College is bustling with a range of programs and events to develop confidence and optimism in our students which is expressed through performance in assessments, the sporting field, stage productions and community service.

I have been impressed by the compassion of our students demonstrated through their willingness and initiative to make a difference to people in need. Just this term we have seen the following fundraisers: ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ for the Leukaemia

Foundation (Year 10) ‘Go Without Challenge’ for Red Cross

Australia (various Senior School students) National Day Against Bullying raised

awareness and money for Compassion, a child sponsorship initiative (Whole College)

When students put themselves into the place of another person suffering from a disease or without the security of food and shelter, they are learning empathy. These experiences encourage students to learn tolerance and acceptance of other people facing a range of life situations and develop an understanding of what their support needs might be. They are learning to take action when they see an injustice or a need they can address.

Don’t forget to sign up to volunteer at the Oran Park Festival on Saturday 11 May. If you have a couple of hours to spare our Parents and Friends Association would appreciate the help with set

up, pack up or the BBQ stall. There is a link from the College’s home page to the Festival where you can sign up to assist. This is also our Open Day and many of our students will be performing and assisting with the program so please come along and take part in this wonderful day in the life of our community.

Easter is also approaching and I love the reminder that the chocolate eggs and hot cross buns give us of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross; to die in our place and take the punishment for our sins so that we can have eternal life. Our God has been so gracious towards us and I pray that all our families will know His love for them and have accepted this free gift of grace. As Christians we rejoice that Christ is risen, death could not hold him! May every family have a blessed and joy filled Easter holiday break.

Mrs Katherine Kendon Deputy Principal -

What a lovely time we had on both our Grandparents days

last week. We truly enjoyed all the special visitors we had at

College over the day and the children thoroughly enjoyed

performing in our concerts and proudly showing Grandpar-

ents and Grandfriend’s around their classrooms. We were

overwhelmed by the generosity of students and families who

attended the book fair and donated books to our new library.

Thank you to everyone who contributed one of their favourite

titles.

This Friday we will be having our Easter Chapel and Easter

Hat Parade, remembering Jesus and his sacrificial gift of

salvation. Our Easter Hat Parade is based on the story “God’s

Very Good Idea Book”, as we celebrate and create hats that

reflect the uniqueness of God’s creation.

In this week’s edition of ‘The Life’, I’d like to introduce two

more of our new Junior School Staff. Enjoy getting to know

them a little more

Mrs McGarry

What Class do you teach? 1W

What is your favourite food? Anything Italian.

Pasta every night of the week would be

alright with me.

Your favourite colour? Any shade of blue or

red - OPAC colours are perfect!

What do you like to do after a busy day at

College? As soon as I get home, one of the

first things I do is play piano - but only after saying hello to my

two spoilt-rotten staffies, Augustus and Octavius.

What was the first thing you noticed about our

College? One of the first things that stood out about OPAC

was just how supportive and welcoming the whole school

community is. Not a day has gone by without someone, be

that staff, student or parent, asking how I am and if I need

help with anything. It can be difficult and daunting starting at a

new school or new workplace when you don't know anyone,

but I can honestly say it has been made a lot easier by the

compassionate community that is OPAC.

We have five College values. Which one resonates with

you the most? Courage. This doesn't mean I am a daredevil

by any means! You will never see me skydiving, taking the

leap of faith with the giant swing or swimming with sharks. I

believe that whilst courage can be seen in physical risks like

these, it is more importantly displayed by taking a personal

'leap of faith' into something unknown. Changing schools

was one of the biggest risks I have taken. My leap of faith

and trust in God led me to OPAC - and I can honestly say I

couldn't have asked for a better school to join.

Mrs Swan

What do you teach? I’m part of the Learning Support team

and also teach Music.

What is your favourite food? Homemade Lasagne

Favourite Colour? Blue

What do you like to do after a busy day

at College? I love spending my spare time

playing with my children and reading lots of

books!

What was the first thing you noticed

about our College? When I first started, I

noticed a real sense of community at the College. There

seems to be a lovely connection between parents and

teachers, in partnership shaping children's spiritual, social,

emotional and academic lives.

We have five College values. Which one resonates with

you the most? Curiosity. I love to ask the question 'why?'

and then do what I can to find the answer and understand

how things in the world work. I love to learn, which is one of

the reasons I wanted to be a teacher. I want to inspire

curiosity and the love of learning in others.

I pray that each of our families have a wonderful and safe

holiday break. We’ll be looking forward to everyone

returning for the beginning of Term 2!

‘But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and

Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever.

Amen’. 2 Peter 3:18

Year 2 Year 2 has had a wonderful Term 1, learning

collaboratively together as a year group in

Dancing, History, Art, Science and Swimming. We

have also really enjoyed reconnecting with our

buddies, who have been helping us understand what

it means to be a good friend who is compassionate to

others.

Year 2 has been involved in developing craftsmanship

through our direct, explicit lessons in both phonics and

when working with numbers. We are fortunate to be

involved in our third year of LNAP (Literacy and

Numeracy Action Plan) with consultants visiting us in

our classes for both phonics and number. We are

getting very clever!

Year 2 has loved being involved in Physical

Education with their class teachers at College, as well

as our swimming lessons each Thursday together at

Atlantis Swimming Pool. We are courageously trying

new skills all the time and are having so much fun!

Year 2 has been learning how to code at

Science Coding Club on Tuesdays at lunchtime

with Mr Plunkett and Mrs Cavanagh. We were

so curious, that Mr Mitas decided to run a Junior

Scratch technology session on Fridays. We are

getting very good at adding concurrent lines of

code to describe a storyline.

Chess Club

On Thursday the 28 March two teams of 3 students from our Chess Club at school. were invited to a chess tournament taking place at Blue Mountains Grammar School. The competition involved 11 different schools from all around the state, even as far as Orange! The students had an excellent day playing with a range of students. We may not have come home with a win but we did score an impressive 4 points in our first tournament which was fantastic. I know that Vaageesh, Ben, Lachlan, Samuel, Dylan and Lachlan had a fantastic day competing and are looking forward to another tournament as soon as possible!

Year 6

The first term of Year 6 has been filled with amazing

experiences that have called on students to

demonstrate their ability to put the College values into

practice. The value we are focussing on this year is

curiosity and there have been many opportunities for

this in our learning.

The novel we are reading this term has been

challenging our learners’ thinking. The novel is called

Wonder and the main character is named Auggie. He

was born with a genetic condition that has meant

many surgeries for him. His face has been greatly

affected by his condition, which means he looks

different to children his age. Through the study of our

novel, we have challenged students to be curious

about ways they can change their thinking about

others who are different.

Science has involved many investigations about

solids, liquids and gases. We have learnt about their

properties and how they can change from one state to

another. Our learning in History has also allowed us to

start thinking about government and how it works.

This has been perfect timing with our current and

upcoming elections. We hope that it has generated

lots of conversation at home about voting and

opportunities for students to see democracy in action

when they attended polling stations with you.

Being role models to our younger students is something we consider very important in our Year 6 students. We are pleased to report they have not let us down in our buddies’ sessions with Year 2. Our students have been loving and shown compassion as we have considered how to treat people we are in relationship with.

It hasn’t all been boring lessons in a classroom though! We have conquered flying foxes, abseiling and giant swings at camp. Wow, what an amazing experience that was! Camp was a great opportunity for us to establish and build relationships with new friends…. and teachers. It was heart-warming to witness the courage it took for many students to overcome their fears and have a go at some of these new experiences. We were very proud teachers indeed.

We have also discussed and explored bullying

and harmony through the special days dedicated

to these causes. We loved Grandparents Day

and showing our loved ones how we are

learning, while also having some fun with them.

Let’s also not forget our swimming carnival,

IPSSO trials and the first term of summer

IPSSO.

Whew! Are you as exhausted as we are? The

holidays will be a welcome rest before we head

into the new term and the most exciting moment

of our year. Moving into the new building! What

amazing blessings God has given us, as well as

those we still have to come.

‘And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.’ 2 Corinthians 9:8

Grandparents Day

Last Thursday and Friday we welcomed around 400

grandparents to our College to celebrate

Grandparents Day. Students from Prep through to

Year 6 were delighted to show their grandparents

around the College and to join in with a variety of

activities in their classrooms. On Thursday, the

College hall was packed to the brim when students

from Years 3-6 and Kindergarten entertained their

guests with song and dance.

A highlight of these days was the availability for

students to take their grandparents to visit the Book

Fair so they could purchase books for them and

donate books for our new Junior School Library. The

response to this was overwhelming! We are very

grateful for the generosity of our grandparents and are

looking forward to moving into our new Library next

term.

The days concluded with a shared picnic lunch in the

playground. They were beautiful times of sharing and

celebrating with our families. Thank you to all those

who were able to come and join in on this special

occasion.

We have had a fantastic first term and I am so grateful for the hard work of our staff and students, which continues to make Oran Park Anglican College a vibrant learning community. This week reports have been sent home for all years and you will notice that the focus of our reports is on students demonstrating and developing ‘learning behaviours’. This week I would like to unpack these a little more as it is vital that students, teachers and parents all understand what it means to be a ‘learner’. Below I have expanded in detail the 5 learning behaviours which describe what a successful learner at the College looks like.

1. Demonstrates curiosity, engagement and perseverance in learning activities

This is a student that ask questions, requests reasons and evidence and always asks ‘Why?’ They stay on task, do not give up when challenged or experiencing failure, ask for help with difficult tasks and are enthusiastic in class. They are happy to ‘give everything a go’.

2. Demonstrates a collaborative approach to learning

A student that works effectively with others, values and appreciates the opinions and work of peers, can give and take criticism and cooperate with others to achieve a common goal or project with purpose and intent

3. Demonstrates use of feedback to improve quality of work

This learner listens to and reflects on teacher and peer feedback, they reflect on their own work, compare and contrast their work to that of others and they apply it to future learning. They actively seek feedback from a range of sources.

4. Demonstrates critical and creative thinking

A student that can identify and solve problems, challenge ideas and beliefs and generate their own. They can initiate and respond to higher order questions and are willing to take calculated risks to find new ways of doing things. They are innovative, imaginative and adaptive to new and unfamiliar concepts and contexts.

5. Demonstrates responsibility in learning

This describes a student that can work well independently and in group situations. They turn up to class on time with all equipment, complete class tasks, homework and assessments catch up missed work and make a sustained and concerted effort to complete everything to the best of their ability.

These learning behaviours are the dispositions we want our students to develop to prepare them not for a life of tests, but for the test of life. To ensure they become responsible and resilient citizens, able to serve in God’s world with purpose and passion.

‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters’.

Year 7 Sydney Symphony Excursion

During this term our Year 7 cohort got the

opportunity to sit front row for a performance by the

Sydney Symphony at the Riverside Theatre. They

heard “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky and

it was brought to life through a mime artist who

dramatically acted the scenes taking place with

enthusiasm and humour. Many students had never

seen an orchestra before and thoroughly enjoyed

the experience, commenting on their surprise of the

size and sound of some of the instruments. Much

prior learning had taken place during normal music

lessons which further enriched the overall

experience for our students. Our students were able

to see an amazing example of collaboration and

craftsmanship in this world class ensemble.

Year 7 Class representatives inducted into

Student Representative Council

On Friday 29 March, Campbell Harris (7R), Jayden

Ranson (7B) and Zachary Mamoo (7W) were

inducted into the Student Representative Council

after being elected by their classmates. The

President, Gabby Russo (Year 11), addressed the

audience, explaining the purpose of the Student

Council: to be a voice for the students and to

improve the school community. Gabby mentioned

that the Student Council has already run a

Sausage Sizzle to raise money for the Homeless

charity “Rough Edges”, and she explained that

next term there are plans underway for “The Big

Event”, which will focus on collaboration across the

College.

As part of the induction process, the Year 7 class

representatives received their badges from Mr

Newton and signed an agreement to uphold the

values of Oran Park Anglican College.

Please pray that the Student Council initiatives will

achieve their objectives and advance the

leadership skills of students.

Year 7 Taster Day

Tuesday 2 April was an exciting day for our current

Year 6 students and our new 2020 Year 7 students,

as they had the opportunity to experience for the first

time what Year 7 will be like next year. Senior

School teachers ran 3 separate lessons to provide a

‘taster’ for some of the learning opportunities they

can expect when they start Year 7.

Mrs Arundell ran an exciting series of science

experiments. Students observed crystals growing

before their eyes, viewed chemical reactions through

the microscopes and created popping photo

canisters using dry ice.

Mrs Watson guided students through a food

technology lesson. They learnt the safety

requirements for the classroom before making and

eating their own pizzas.

Mr McKenzie introduced the students to the

Technology and Applied Science rooms where they

again learnt about the safety requirements for the

learning space. They also had the opportunity to

construct their own name-tag using the laser cutter,

lathe and hot glue guns.

The day was a very positive and valuable one. The students were excited to see some of the fun and engaging activities that await them when they finally reach Year 7 in 2020.

Recent Learning Experiences in the HSIE

Department

OPAC students have been very busy in the last

fortnight, with a number of interesting learning

experiences across the HSIE subjects. If you have a

child who was involved in any of the following

activities, ask them what they learned.

Thursday 21 March: Year 11 Legal Studies visited Campbelltown Courthouse and observed a number of legal cases, including a judgement connected to Dangerous Driving causing Death where a twenty-two year old woman was sentenced to prison. The students analysed this case to complete their first assessment task.

Monday 25 March: Year 11 Business Studies visited Bluescope Steel to observe the Operations processes involved in the making of steel. Students saw the massive blast furnace, slab products and sheet and coil divisions. Students can use Bluescope Steel as a case study in both the Preliminary and HSC examinations.

Thursday 28 March: Year 8 History tasted Medieval European peasant food – pottage (boiled vegetables), pickled carrots and honey-ginger peas. Students had to consider: What did it taste like? Did you like it? Is it healthy? Would you like to be a Medieval peasant and eat this every day?

Friday 29 March: High-performing students in Years 7-11 Geography participated in the 25

th Australian

Geography Competition. Over 65,000 students from around Australia entered the Competition, which is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland. With current international affairs, geography is a vital subject for understanding the socio-economic and environmental interactions at local, regional and international scales. Top-scoring Year 11 students from across the state will have the opportunity to take part in Geography’s Big Week Out being held on Kangaroo Island, South Australia later this year. From that event, Australia’s team will be chosen for the 2020 International Geography Olympiad being held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Year 12 Design and Technology

Recently Year 12 Design and Technology students

and Year 11 Industrial Technology students

attended seminars at the Power House Museum in

Sydney led by successful Australian designers such

as Dr Mark Liu (Zero-Waste Fashion) and Bruce

Jeffreys (Dresden Vision). Common themes included

the importance of asking the ‘why’ and ‘why not’

questions as well as developing resilience in the

face of setbacks.

Students also had the opportunity to view exemplary

works from the 2018 HSC, where they were able to

gain ideas not only for projects, but for how to

document their work clearly and succinctly.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and

will hopefully inspire them to enjoy extending

themselves in their HSC year.

This term, the students have been investigating different physical activity classes available. The students represented the College extremely well and everyone worked up a sweat!

Secondary MISA Sport

Congratulations to the MISA 7-9 Boys Volleyball team. The Boys team defeated Broughton Anglican College in the Finals to bring home our first MISA trophy. Not bad for our third year in the competition! As a result, the boys competed at the Interzone Final at Mount Annan Leisure Centre. They played against the winning School of the North Zone (Thomas Hassall Anglican College) and the winning School of the East Zone (John Terry Catholic College). It was challenging competition. Our first game we defeated John Terry in a tight match, within the 5

th Set. This put OPAC as the leaders of

the table. However, we lost to Thomas Hassall in a very tight and emotion-charged 4 sets. Well done to the following boys who represented OPAC well throughout the competition:

BANISTER Isaac BANJAS Aleksandar - Manager CHENG Yu Tian Etienne (Etienne) COX Callum DENG Kout FLEMING Ethan GARDNER Evan INGLIS Jayden JABER Hashem LING Jacob MANUEL Joshua - Scorer SALEH Jordan
