September. Change is in the air. The weather changes, our schedules change and addresses change as college students leave home and move into the dorms. Some of the changes are welcome, others bring adjustments we would rather not make. It helps if we remember that God is present and active in all of it. As you might expect, there are some changes at church, too. We have a new Youth Leader: Anna Balas. A recent Duke University graduate, Anna will be working in Ferndale this year and living with her parents. She has agreed to serve as our interim Youth Leader and already has some exciting plans in place. Youth and their parents were invited to the Balas home on August 25th for a time of brainstorming and brain-freeze as we enjoyed an ice cream sundae bar and discussed the coming year. The youth will travel to YMCA Camp Ohiyesa in Holly for a time of group-building (and fun) on September 8th from 12:45-5:15. One change for the Youth will be weekly meetings on Sundays (4-5:30 pm). On September 15th they will prepare and serve dinner for our S.O.S./Lighthouse guests. Nothing new there; it will be a spaghetti dinner. All help gratefully ac-cepted. Another change will come with this year’s Annual Church Conference. It will be on a Thursday this year (and earlier than usual): September 26th (7 pm). This is our annual opportunity to meet with our District Superintendent, the Reverend Dr. Charles Boayue, Jr. to review what we have been doing as a Church Family and anticipate what we might do in the coming year--and beyond. Beginning September 8th, we will resume our Sunday schedule of two services (9 and 11 am) with Sunday School for all ages in-between. You might want to consider joining one of the Adult Sunday School classes—or starting a new one. September 8th is also when we will have the “Blessing of the Backpacks” and present Bibles to our 3rd Graders. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will read that, beginning in September, there will be no projection during our Traditional Service. We have had a few projec-tionists “retire” for various reasons, which has precipitated this potential change. This is one change we can avoid! What it will take is three or four peo-ple who will volunteer to run projection (power-point) at the second service. Training will be provided. Please prayerfully consider your willingness to serve in this capacity. Whether we are the kind of person who finds change energizing and exciting or the kind who resists change, when changes come it is good for us to look for reminders of God’s unchanging presence in the midst of them. Trust that what Paul wrote holds true: “all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to God’s purpose” (hopefully that’s us!). As the old hymn puts it, “In the midst of changing way, give us still the grace to praise”… Pastor Gregg Mayberry

Dear BBUM Men and Congregation, Thank you for having and supporting the Chicken Barbecue so that we were able to go to camp. We went to Bay Shore Basketball Camp, Maddie for the third time and Annalise for the first time. We had so much fun at camp! Our favorite part was tab-ernacle. We had so much fun singing, dancing, jumping, and worshiping that we broke the floor! We also played basketball for six hours a day. We did skills in the morning and then played games in the afternoon. Our cabin was amazing! We became close friends, al-most like family! Thanks again for having and support-ing the Chicken Barbecue so that we could go to camp! Sincerely, Maddie and Annalise Lorenz
A very heartfelt thank you to my wonderful church
family for all the cards, phone calls, food, visits and
prayers during my recent surgery and recovery.
You are a blessing.
A special thank you to Cindy and Ginny for mailing
me the bulletin each week. You are awesome!
Love to All, Jeanine Sutton
Thank you to all the families and volunteers that made VBS 2019 a success! A BIG thank you to ALL of the people who donated food and craft items. With your assistance, we were able to provide a great ex-perience for 36 kids from the sur-rounding area.
Thank you to the congregation for all of the thoughts and prayers during my illness. It is appreciated so very much. Sincerely, Gary Dillon
Let's take a look at a few newly donated adult books in our fiction section.
Mysteries make for a great summer read. On the lighter side, lets start with fast stories by Mindy Starns Clark. Blind Dates can be Murder will prove true, and in Elementary my Dear Watkins, the goal is to find who is trying to murder Danny.
The Trouble With Tulip takes place on her wedding day when she finds out that her photographer is now as-signed to cover an investigation of a murder at the same time. Just 3 light crimes to solve.
The Summer Wives, by Beatriz Williams finds Miranda moving to an island where many people come to hide their secrets or cause trouble. In All the Light we Cannot See, Anthony Doerr heads to Paris during World War II. A blind girl, her father and a torn apart country will show you real adventure. Boston is the center of Saints for all Occasions, by J. Courtney Sullivan. They will grow into a large family where secrets might tear them apart. Again we find people leaving their homes to settle around America. A Soft Place to Land by Susin White, deals with 2 sisters whose lives are affected by two accidents. The Obituary Writer, by Ann Hood deals with a decision on whether to take the step to divorce. Pachinko by Min In Lee is the story of an immigrant family moving to Japan to start a new life. Last but not least is Robin Oliveira's Winter Sisters. The weather is the center of this adventure of the disappearance of the 2 girls.
The following titles are from our nonfiction section of the library. Sisterhood of faith (277.3) is a collection put together by Shirley Brosius. There are 365 stories of women who made a difference. Don't hesitate to use the book for a year. Daily We Seek You (246) by J. McConnell is a collection of thoughts and prayers also for daily use. Hugs for Woman (242.643) by M. Hollingsworth...the title tells it all. Someone Cares (811.54) by Helen Steiner Rice is very touching. The Normal Christine Life (624) by Watchman M Nee covers his 20 years spent in a communist prison.
Thanks to those who have donated the books noted above. Mike Roeder, Linda Burgess, Becky Lorenz and the others too shy to give me their names. See these on display on the shelving and the table out side the li-brary.
Happy Reading!!!!!!Betty Bernard.

Thank you, Big Beaver! We received a wonderful response to our gathering of bedroom, bathroom, and personal hygiene products for refugee families who will be settling in our area through the efforts of Samari-tas! BBUMC members combined efforts and donated over 100 items, two weeks before our collection dead-line! Samaritas is helping to settle families, including those from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who are escaping extreme levels of violence and human rights abuses, and are currently residing in harsh condi-tions in refugee camps.
Samaritas is looking for additional volunteer support for families who will be arriving soon. Volunteers are needed for one-time and on-going assistance for activities such as furnishing the fami-ly’s home with gently used or new furniture and other household items such as kitchenware and lamps; help-ing to set up the house with the donated items and prepare it for the family’s arrival; preparing a homemade meal during the first few weeks; storing donated items until they are needed; providing direct assistance to the family in managing governmental, school, and medical systems and paperwork they will encounter; offering social opportunities for the family; providing a ride to an appointment, and more.
Your help in any capacity, no matter how big or small, is needed, valued, and greatly appreciated and will make a world of difference to a family needing love and support at this time. You may select volunteer activ-ities that meet your schedule, capacity, and interest. If you would like additional information, without obliga-tion to participate, please contact Brenda Balas at [email protected] or 313-819-8472.
Please keep these refugee families and the staff and volunteers at Samaritas in your prayers. Thank you for all you do to help a stranger in need.

The WOW Celebration will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. This year, we will be
going under the sea and learning how the sea contains many wondrous sights created by
God. “Finding Jesus Under the Sea” teaches kids that when we go under the sea and take a
closer look, we see that the sea has much to teach us about God. During the program, we
are also going to be doing service projects for various local charitable organizations. The
Crusader children’s choir will be held during our time as well. Dinner will be provided
from 6:35 – 7:00. The cost is $75 for the first child, $65 for the second and $60 for the
