THE PASTOR’S PAGE
Happy New Year!
I always appreciate the fresh start and sense of a new beginning that Jan-
uary brings. We begin each new year with renewed optimism and a
sense of possibility. We find ourselves on the threshold of 2020. Usual-
ly we associate 20/20 with a visit to the optometrist (an indication that
we see clearly at 20 feet what we should be able to see at a distance of
20 feet). Or maybe we are more likely to hear or say, “ Hindsight is
20/20”…
At last year’s November meeting of our Administrative Council, the gath-
ered leaders of our congregation had a real heart-to-heart discussion
about denominational decline and local worship attendance figures that
have been decreasing for the last dozen years. We would like to reverse
the trend but were at a loss as far as what to do (or at least what to do
first).
Since then, Gary Step (a member of our Michigan Conference Congrega-
tional Vibrancy Team) has agreed to meet with us on Monday, January
13th (6:30 pm) to help us “catch a vision” as we plan and prepare for the
future of Big Beaver UMC. “Roads to Vibrancy” is a program designed to
assist congregations in this process.
Gary will listen to our concerns and try to grasp our perception of our
current situation. He will help us begin to envision new possibilities for
our Church Family as we move into the future God has planned and pre-
pared for us. Gary will offer us guidance, leadership and tools to break
down a five year plan into 90 incremental steps toward that future.
In addition to our staff, committee chairs and department leaders, I am
inviting and encouraging all who are interested in and/or concerned
about the future role of Big Beaver UMC in our lives, in our community
and in the world to participate in this initial meeting. (Mark Monday, Jan-
uary 13th (6:30 pm) on your calendar and make plans to attend.)
2020 can be the year we catch a vision for our Church Family and devel-
op a plan and strategies that will help us see 20/20 as we step into
God’s future. Together we can transition from “vision impaired” to
“vision empowered”!
Looking forward to it,
Pastor Gregg Mayberry

BBUMC Seniors Presents
Great People of the Bible The Inspiring Story of Their Family Through Four Generations
ABRAHAM
His faith pleased God. He became the admired founder of the Jewish nation, was respected by others, and was courageous in defending his family at any cost.
He was not only a caring father, but practiced hospitality to others.
SARAH
She had trouble believing God’s promises to her, but Sarah eventually became the
mother of a nation and ancestor of Jesus. She was a woman of faith and the first
to be listed in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews Chapter 11.
ISAAC
He was the miracle child born to Sarah when she was 90 years old and Abraham was
100 years old. He was the first descendant to fulfill God’s promise to Abraham to
create a great nation through which he would bless the world.
JACOB
He was the third link to God’s plan to start a nation from Abraham. Jacob was the
father of the 12 tribes of Israel. Before Jacob was born, God promised His plan
would be worked out through Jacob and not his twin brother Esau.
JOSEPH
The great grandson of Abraham and Sarah, Joseph was the favorite son of Jacob
and Rachel. From slave to ruler, Joseph was known for his personal integrity
and as a man of spiritual sensitivity. He loved his jealous brothers and taught
them the meaning of forgiveness.
