The Pastor’s Message
The following is Pastor Derrick's 2017 Church
Conference report. it is reprinted in this month's
newsletter so that more people may have an
opportunity to read it.
Middletown United Methodist Church October 28, 2017
Report of the Pastor Rev. Derrick L. Doherty Since our last Church Conference in 2016, God has been working in mighty ways. There have been joys, challenges, and amazements and we have continued to faithfully serve God as we are living into our vision of: being a worshiping community, building disciples of Jesus Christ, by connecting, growing, and sharing. At a Special Church Conference in 2017, we voted on a new organizational structure and a list of nominations for said structure. Since that special meeting the leaders of the church have been transitioning us into our new structure. We have noticed some ‘hic-cup’ areas, for example the ‘connecting and community team’ which the Leadership Team will continue to discern how best to resolve. We have also noticed some amazing successes, the Small Group Design Team and the Worship Design Team. I look forward to our church living into our new structure and vision even more in 2018. There are many things, that I am thankful to God for as we look back over the year. Here is a small list for example purposes: -our continued Outreach Events -64 children registered with Learning Path preschool -over 80 children involved in our VBS/Summer Camp -worship attendance has increased -more people accepting Christ and getting Baptized -pilgrimage to the Holy Lands -our continued strong support of local missions: Goodness Now, Family Promise, Keyport food pantry, and the Bayshore Lunch program to name a few. We are beginning to see some positive traction in the area of our God sized goals. (200 people
engaged in worship, 200 people engaged in small groups, and 200 people engaged in hands-on-missions all by 2022). In all three of these vital areas of ministry we have experienced trackable growth. I am excited that in 2017 we experimented with a new off-site worship celebration, the Sunset Surf Celebration, and that it was successful. We averaged 45 people each Tuesday night and new people joined us! I am excited that we have new small groups forming with new people attending them. In 2017, we had many capital expenses that came due: church building drainage, skylight repairs, and the parsonage situation, to name a few. I want to express appreciation to the Trustees who continued to work these situation and find resolutions. I want to ask for your prayers for our children, youth, and young adult ministries. The demographics of our area and the increase in our preschool and summer camp make it clear that there are many families to be reached. However our exciting children, youth, and young adult ministries have not experienced the same level of growth. Please be in prayer and support of our Family Ministry Team as they seek new opportunities to reach our neighbors. Please be ready to support them when they ask for your help. Sisters and brothers, I am honored and
humbled to serve God alongside each and every
one of you. Thank you for another wonderful year.
I look forward to this coming year and all the great
things God has planned for us.
Peace and God’s blessings.
In Christ,
Rev. Derrick L. Doherty

Poinsettia Orders The order forms for Christmas Poinsettias will be available beginning Sunday, November 12th. You will have until December 3rd to place your orders but better early than late. As we have done in the past you may order poinsettias and take them early. There is a space on the order form to do that…they will be available Sunday, December 17th. If you have any questions, please contact Carolyn Hooper.
Advent Wreathe Workshop On Sunday, December 3rd, the first Sunday of Advent, we be having our annual Advent Wreathe Workshop. We will begin our evening atv5:00 with a pot luck supper and then you will have the opportunity to create your very own family Advent Wreathe. The wire, greens and candles will be provided…you will need to bring your own work gloves and clippers and if you have your wire from last year…bring that as well. A signup sheet will soon be available for you to sign so we know how families to plan for.
Church Family Christmas On Sunday, December 10th we will be having our Church Family Christmas. We have had such a great turn out for this fun night of decorating our church for Christmas. The evening will begin at 5:00 where we have lots to do to get our
church ready for Christmas. Once done we can sit back and enjoy pizza and your favorite dessert. Be sure to sign up so we know how many pizzas to order.
Treat Boxes for our Youth This is the last call for addresses for our youth away at school or serving the military or just far away from home. We want them to know we miss them and think about them often. I have received very few and I know there are more out there. Please send them to me, Carolyn at [email protected] or out them in my mailbox. Thank you.
Volunteers Needed—Fellowship Hall, Communion
We need your help for the fellowship time between the 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services. We need help setting up the coffee, clean up and supplying treats. The signup will be in the narthex for you to sign to help us out. Doesn’t take long and it will be a welcome help. Each month we receive communion…some months more than once. We are in need of volunteers to help set up for communion and clean up after communion. If you are interested in helping please contact Wendy Sadowski or Carolyn Hooper. We will be happy to show you how it is done.

Glorious Vessels
“Glorious Vessels in the Potter’s Hand” was the program presented by Darlene Eason on Oct. 21st to the Women’s Fellowship of MUMC. The group met in Fellowship Hall from 9 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. and began with a continental breakfast, which was followed by an inspirational message, “Heavenly Potter,” relating to the theme in the Bible verse, Isaiah 64:8 “Yet, O
Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, you are the Potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Darlene cited many relevant Bible verses and related meaningful personal experiences which led her to use the symbolism of the formation of clay vessels to the creation of lives by God.
Small group
discussion followed where each woman had the opportunity to bring up the portion of the scriptures discussed that seemed to have special meaning for her. Darlene shared more of the analogy of Christ as a creator of the vessel while demonstrating the actual “throwing” of a jar at her
potter’s wheel during “Glorious Vessels in the Making.” This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “‘Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message. So, I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel.” Jeremiah 18:1-3.
After a break for lunch and fellowship Darlene led the women again in prayer emphasizing the power of prayer and how it has affected her life. She urged her audience to take time for personal reflection
and to always remember that “You are God’s Chosen Vessel.” “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things and by Your will they exist and were created. Revelations 4:11

2017 Stewardship Campaign
Our lives can be radically transformed by the Living God through prayer, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Transformed Living is our 2017 Stewardship Campaign in
which we hope all of our lives will be transformed.. Pastor Derrick is taking us through a theme of Transformational Living—looking at our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness and tying it into water, a necessary part of our living. Our Commitment Sunday will be November 19 and commitment cards should come in the mail before Nov. 12th. We ask you to join your sisters and brothers in Christ at worship to hear what this can mean for your own life and we ask you to prayerfully consider what you will do for God through your church in the coming year. Remember, while your monetary gifts are important, so are your prayers, presence, other gifts, service and witness!

CROP WALK
The CROP Walk is over--at least the walking part! Our congregation had 10 folks take sponsor enve-lopes and we had 12 people come to walk on Sunday and raised $1569.66. Great job! I delivered 87 pounds of rice, beans and peanut butter and we had another 120 pounds of food donated that went di-rectly to food pantries. Over 14,000 pounds of rice, beans and peanut butter were collected at the walk and have already been delivered to local partners. Monetary donations can still be accepted! Go to www.crophungerwalk.org/redbanknj and you can still donate. CWS is active in our coun-try, in Puerto Rico, in Mexico and they helped us 5 years ago after Sandy hit our area. Do YOUR small part to fight hunger! Dianne Thompson, CROP chairperson
Family Promise I'm so excited to announce that the new day center's deed has been delivered! Building 501 at Fort Mon-mouth should be ready by the new year! Our next Family Promise hosting week at MUMC begins on Sunday evening, 11/5. Many hands are always need-ed during hosting weeks to help with all the respon-sibilities of housing and feeding up to 5 families (14 people). Please sign up to help at: http://signup.com/go/

Halloween Celebration
Imaginative play is an important learning tool for
preschoolers.
Using our imagination is an exercise in being more
aware, more alive, more creative.
It is in this spirit that we embrace Halloween.
Here are some photos from our Halloween Celebration.

In Our Church Community…
During the month of October, LPP students learn
all about members of our community who work
hard to keep us safe, happy, and healthy. We
received visitors from the Lincroft Fire Department,
Lincroft First Aid & Rescue Squad, a 911 Dispatcher,
and a local Police Officer, who offered important
safety tips and awesome hands-on learning
experiences. In the classroom we learned about
doctors, teachers, chefs, artists, farmers, and shop
keepers and others through dramatic play and
other classroom projects.
Why do we do this? Children develop a larger sense
of self and family by learning about the people who
support life within their community. A strong sense
of community serves as an optimistic window to
the future. Our exploration of community continues
throughout our school year with our Space
curriculum in January, our Dental Health and Mail
Carrier themes in February, our Farm.
