THE BIG 3Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to be involved in 3 ways:

WORSHIP ON THE WEEKENDSGather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

CONNECT IN COMMUNITY Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a better way- Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERSJoin a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses, serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something

special. Discover the joy of serving.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME?

Technically, I guess my title is Rev. Dr. Brian Dennert – but no need to be that formal, call me what you like (Brian, Pastor Brian, Dr. Brian….whatever)! My wife’s name is Beth and we have 2 kids, Emma (4) and Micah (2).

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived there for 10 years. Then I lived in a suburb of the Twin Cities (Plymouth, MN) for the next 4 years and moved to the Naperville, IL area when I started high school. I’ve been in the Chicagoland area ever since (with the exception of college). Beth was born in Michigan, but her family moved to Naperville when she was 3, so we both call the Naperville area our hometown.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET CONNECTED TO FAITH CHURCH?

I met Pastor Andy Nearpass a couple of years ago, and in conversation with him late last year, I mentioned that I was in a time of transition out of my current ministry context (teaching at Trinity Christian College and serving as the campus pastor/planter of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palos Heights). Andy then introduced me to Pastor Bob, and one lunch led to another as we saw a providential intersection between my story and Faith’s story.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO AT FAITH CHURCH?

Bringing me to Faith Church has definitely been a way that I have seen God at work; this was something that I did not have on my radar screen but seems like a perfect fit in terms of the culture of the church and my strengths and gifts. As I have met people over the past couple of months, I have heard so many stories of how God brought people here and has helped them understand God’s grace in new and greater ways.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE WORSHIP SERVICES?

I feel like I have been challenged by God’s Word with tenderness but also boldness each week, being reminded that Christ’s love for us should move me to live differently in this world. I have also found that the music has been “sticky,” as I find myself singing the songs from the service throughout the week

silently in my head or in the privacy of my home or car!

WHERE DO YOU SERVE AT FAITH CHURCH?

As the Pastor of Leadership Training Residency (LTR) and Theology, I will be overseeing the LTR program and creating theological resources at Faith Church as well as being part of the preaching faculty. I’m seeking to draw upon my education (a PhD in New Testament from Loyola University Chicago) and pastoral experience (over 8 years of ordained ministry working in youth ministry, adult education and discipleship, children’s ministry, church planting, and other areas of ministry).

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH OTHERS AT YOUR CAMPUS?

Having just moved to Dyer at the end of August, we are still figuring out our rhythms of life and what community with others at our campus (Dyer) will look like. Beth has joined the MOPS group at Dyer as a way to connect.

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE?

I grew up in a Christian house, but it was in high school that I really understood God’s love and grace – that being a Christian was more than going to church but really experiencing forgiveness of sin in Christ and transformation to love and serve others; Christ’s death for me is a big deal! I feel like I’ve been learning about the power of God’s grace ever since, continually seeing that I am actually a worse sinner than I thought but that God’s love for me is even bigger and stronger than I could have ever imagined. God’s grace in my life has allowed me to point others to this same truth in relationships and in public ministry.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE?

If you have any theological questions, feel free to e-mail them to me at [email protected]! That said, just because I am a theologian doesn’t mean that I don’t have interest in other things, as I am a big sports fan (following teams like the Texas Rangers, Detroit Lions, and Iowa Hawkeyes), read biographies, enjoy spending time with my family, drink way too much coffee, and have a ridiculous sweet tooth!

SCHERERVILLE - REACH MONIES IN ACTION:Faith Church – Schererville is working with Campagna Academy to remodel the chapel. This space can then be used by Faith Kids for 3 year olds-5th grade kids, teaching them about Jesus. We have had some awesome volunteers and leaders assisting in so many ways and look forward to the project being complete sometime this Fall 2015. Faith Church Schererville also held the Faith Fun Fair on July 18th as a way to REACH Schererville with the love of Jesus. 250+ people attended the event and 40+ people came out to serve, showing the love of Jesus to this community.

CEDAR LAKE - REACH PROJECTProgress on the Cedar Lake Campus continues to take place. Steel beams, walls, floors and ceilings are all beginning to show the size of rooms and general flow of the building. Despite a tough Spring with significant rain, our general contractor is working hard it is encouraging to see the building taking shape.

The congregation of Faith Church pledged $7,678,000 towards the Reach Project. Through mid-September $1,665,000 has been given towards the Reach Project! That is great news and we are so thankful for your generosity!

The leadership of Faith Church would love to see any debt related to this project kept to a minimum, and so your continued generosity

will not just benefit the project but will contribute to changing lives for an eternity as well. That is cool to think about!

Thank you so much to those who have already completed their pledges or are on track to complete their pledges on time. Thank you for getting the Reach Project started!

For those that are slightly behind or have not started, there is no better time than now to get started and be caught up in the near future. We are making progress on different projects. It would be great to finish the 1 year anniversary mark of the Reach Project in a strong position as we work on the Cedar Lake Project and other campus projects. We will continue to pray for you and that God would bless you and your family with health, spiritual growth and what you stand in need of this year.

Discipleship

B y : B e n K a m p m e i e r

Page 11: The Paper October, Issue 9 Vol. 2

“Discipleship” is a word we use and hear so often in our Christian context, we can easily forget the meaning behind it. Thankfully, Jesus, the Living Word, points us to an illustration that we can all understand:

“By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” (John 15:8)

Why choose the metaphor of fruit-bearing to describe the discipleship process? I think it has to do with scope. Fruit is the quintessential example of broad scope. Think about your favorite fruit for a second. Typically you’ll find seeds on the inside, right? That piece of fruit exists because some time ago someone planted a seed which became the plant that bore the fruit. Special care was taken to ensure that all of the right conditions for that seed to germinate and for the plant to survive, grow and bear fruit were in place. Now, inside of that piece of fruit is the potential to do it all again – seeds containing all of the necessary DNA to continue the cycle. In the right conditions, your piece of fruit holds the potential for an entire orchard inside of it! From the molecular to the massive, fruit-bearing has a broad scope and in so many ways captures the mysterious image of discipleship itself.

Discipleship is a highly personal responsibility. If the proof of discipleship is found in the fruit-bearing, then we must take responsibility for the conditions that we are rooted in. God has provided everything that we need to bear fruit and to glorify Him through His Word, in our community and by the power of the Holy Spirit. We simply must

take it upon ourselves to be found obediently responding to Jesus’ challenge to bear fruit. We must also realize that this fruit-bearing is a means to an end. We are not meant to simply be made into “better people,” but are, in fact, being formed into the likeness of Christ, who through His life, death and resurrection has brought salvation to the world. Just like a piece of fruit containing seeds has potential, our personal growth contains potential for mission – the mission, to “go and make disciples…” Discipleship has a broad scope. It may be a small word, but it describes the place where the incredibly personal and the incomprehensibly global impacts intersect with one another.

As you may have already heard, this October, we are launching a new discipleship experience at the Dyer Campus simply called “Wednesdays.” The logic behind this experience is simple. To be effective in mission, we must be fruit-bearing disciples, and to be fruit-bearing disciples, we must be rootedv in the right environment. Now, it wouldn’t make sense to insist that all of our growing and fruit-bearing must happen inside of the four walls of the church building, and we’re not. In fact, Wednesdays consolidates multiple meetings of midweek ministries into one to encourage discipleship in all arenas of life, but one thing remains true: many Christians, even if they desire to steward their own discipleship well, don’t know where to begin. So, the hope for Wednesdays is to provide an environment where God’s people at Faith Church can begin to live out the Gospel through relationship.A Place to become fruit-bearing disciples, reaching the disconnected by growing the connected.

Page 14: The Paper October, Issue 9 Vol. 2

O ur church’s journey through the book of Romans led to a discussion of spiritual gifts, of the fact that God has given each Christian specific abilities to help grow other Christians and

reach the disconnected. We have sought to help people identify their gifts and then unleash their gifts in areas of service according to their passions and interests. But, having these gifts does not preclude growth in them. In fact, we are called to cultivate these gifts while we are using them – those that have a gift of teaching can improve as teachers, those with the gift of mercy can learn better ways to care for people, those with the gift of serving can become better servants. In this way, we reflect the servants in Jesus’ parable who seek to grow what their master has entrusted them with for the benefit of the master’s kingdom (Matthew 25:31-46). In short, we need to discover, deploy, and develop our gifts.

One of the gifts that Paul mentions in Romans 12 is the gift of leadership, and Faith Church is committed to helping people with this gift grow in effectiveness as we seek to reach the disconnected and grow the connected. Effective leaders are a key strategy to multiplication as seen in Jesus’ method of investing in a group of leaders (the disciples) who would then go and spread the Gospel throughout the world.

Growing “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

- Romans 12:6-8

in ourgifts & LTR

Our Leadership Training Residency (LTR) is one way we develop the spiritual gifts of people to help them lead in vibrant ministries in their area of passion and giftedness. We have tracks that include Pastoral/Ministry Leadership, Worship, Children’s Ministry, and Leadership Journey as well as mini-tracks for areas such as Technical Arts, Creative Video, and Serving. Classes typically meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-8:30 PM in a cohort style, that is, a small group of like-minded individuals who form a community of learning. We call it a “residency” because it is more than just a class as it has practical, hands-on elements in one’s area of ministry interest and involves mentoring by current leaders.

In January, we will start new groups in Pastoral/Ministry Leadership, Worship, Children’s Ministry, and Leadership Journey. (Technical Arts, Creative Video, and Serving will start later.) Ask God if He might be leading you to participate in the program to be further developed as a leader or to grow as a minister in your area of passion. Encourage those around you who have gifts in leadership to consider participating in the program as well.

If you have interest in or questions about LTR, please contact me at [email protected].
