THE BIG 3Whether you’ve been attending Faith Church for a long time or you are a first time

visitor, THE PAPER is here to help! Being a part of this church family is a partnership in growth, so we encourage you to

be involved in 3 ways:

Worship on the WeekendsGather with others to listen to a message from God’s Word, sing, pray and lift up

the name of Jesus. Attend a service at one of our campuses. Faith Kids (infant-5th grade) is a safe place where kids can worship Jesus at their level. Don’t miss the

opportunity to gather with others and worship each week. Invite a friend.

connect in Community

Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be done alone. Sole-ranger Christianity usually means discouragement and failure. God has provided a

better way-Biblical community. Community keeps us encouraged, helps us build meaningful friendships, and most importantly, helps us grow as Christians. This may

be through a Mini-Church, Bible study or Serving Team. No matter what your age, God does not intend for you to walk through life alone. Be real. Be known.

SERVE OTHERSJoin a weekend Serving Team at one of our campuses. Serve in your neighborhood or around the world! God has gifted each of us to do something special. Discover

the joy of serving.

Page 4: The Paper October Issue 4 Vol. 1

For the past seven years, Faith Church has been on an exhila-rating journey aptly referred to as “the multi-site movement.” In the early days, (2007), there were many comments like “Good luck with that,” “Hope it goes well down there” (as if Cedar Lake is just north of Florida), “I’ll pray for ‘your church’” (as if there was a great schism at Faith Church), and, my favorite, “What are you going to do if this ‘experi-ment’ doesn’t work?”

Well, seven years later, after the launch of our seventh campus, I’d say the experi-ment has been bearing fruit: On an average weekend, 40% of the people who worship at Faith Church are not step-ping foot onto the Dyer Cam-pus where it all began. Faith Church has a footprint and a presence in seven unique communities in “The Region.” Hundreds of servants and leaders have been identified, trained and sent “on mission” into the communities that Faith Church resides in. The total number of seats available at optimal worship times has grown tremendously. If we include The Well video venue, Faith Church has gone from 3 worship experiences to 16 per

weekend.Additional benefits of “the multi-site movement” as taken from The Multi-site Church Revolution, by Geoff Surratt, Greg Ligon and Warren bird include:

• brings together the best aspects of larger churches and smaller churches

• assists in reaching friends and family unwilling to travel a great distance to church

• accelerates a climate for diversity, creativity and innovation in ministry

• improves a church’s stewardship of funds and resources

• enables a church to extend itself into niches like the arts (HAC) and schools (Campagna Academy, home of Faith-Schererville)

• helps a congregation see how it is part of a larger kingdom mission

• provides a pipeline for the development of emerging leaders and future staff

Pastor Bob often says, “If it’s alive, it multiplies.” We can see evidence of this in Scrip-ture and in the history of the church. Here are some of his observations on the benefits of being a multi-site church:

• Each week the pastors gather to pray, problem solve and be held accountable. The camaraderie we share is such a source of strength.

• Each week, we together as pastors, wrestle with the same passage sharing ideas for messages.

• Once a month the seven campus leaders (pastors, worship leaders, kids’ directors and key leaders) gather to pray, unite and creatively plan our series.

• We share resources for ministry: programs, bulletins, and The Paper.

• We share talent. Worship arts share clarity of songs, singers and instrumentalists share talent.

• From time to time, all seven sites together, receive train ing.

• Together we can make a larger imprint in God’s world.

The multi-site journey has been a fun and challenging ride, and we believe that God is calling us to continue. We know that we have made mistakes, that our path has been rough and difficult at times, and that we are far from perfect. However, God continues to spur us on, to pour out his Holy Spirit, and calls us to live fully into the mission of “reaching the disconnected and growing the connected in Christ.”

Acts 1:8 has been a theme verse for living into this great, challenging endeavor. The same challenge that Jesus left with his disciples is the same challenge he gives to us today:

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon

you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem

and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end

of the earth.”

For the glory of God, there is no greater call. Let’s continue on the journey and answer the call together in Dyer, The Region, Chicagoland and to the end of the earth (which is NOT Cedar Lake, by the way)!

Q. Where are you from? A. Sam was raised in High-land, IN and Carol was raised in Lansing, IL.

Q. How did you first get con-nected to Faith Church?A. For several years we visited numerous churches, including Faith Dyer, in an effort to see where God wanted to use us. For quite a while, we attended First CRC of Highland as well as Suncrest Church, eventually feeling led to join First CRC of Highland. We are delighted with the transition of becom-ing a Faith Church campus in Highland.

Q. What do you enjoy about Faith Church?A. We attend the 11 a.m. service and love to see unfa-miliar faces. We find that the relaxed format draws people to Faith Church. Music has always been an integral part of worship, preparing our hearts and minzs to focus on Pas-tor Jason’s Biblical teaching.

Pastor Jason’s insight of the Bible and teaching method is relevant to all age groups. He gives practical application that can be applied to our everyday walk with God. We love his honesty, humor and the exam-ples he gives from his own life. He is SO real!

Q. Where do you serve at Faith Church?A. We recently have become a part of the Visitation Team. We look forward to meeting with others. Carol loves choir, and we both volunteer outside of Faith Church. Sam volunteers at the Thrift Center in High-land, and Carol volunteers with Freedom Bound Ministry at the Lake County Jail.

Q. What have you seen God do in your life?A. We find ourselves in an ex-citing ‘season’ of life. We have been married 45 years. We have three beautiful daughters, two great sons-in-law, and six grandchildren (five grand-

SAM & CAROL OOSTMAN

sons and one ‘Princess’). Our eldest daughter Charissa, is with a great guy, Ray Vander-Bok, who is currently on a list waiting for a heart transplant. Sam is retired from our owner/operator excavating business, and Carol works for Bright Star Home Health. We find life has taught us some priceless lessons that we pass along to others:

• We are in our 60’s and are more aware of the brevity of life and the importance of finishing the race of life strong with our Lord.

• We live in such a broken world and in spite of our sinful-ness/brokenness, God contin-ues to mold and refine us for His glory.

• We have felt the Holy Spirit’s presence and God’s love in sickness and health, through the death of loved ones, finan-cial crunches, business chal-lenges and family situations.

• When God allows adversity, He walks with us every step of the way. We feel that God will use our life pain to comfort others when they are faced with similar situations.

• Everything we have belongs to God; we are merely custodi-ans, entrusted to produce fruit with the gifts we have been given by God.

• Spending time everyday in the Bible and praying is the very best advice for everyone.

Brookport, ILLINOISOCTOBER 13-19In November of 2013, the town of Brookport, IL was devastated by a series of tornados that ripped through the area. Much of the area is still rebuilding and in need of help. This October Faith Church, working along-side World Renew, will be sending a team of individuals to assist in rebuilding this area. Jobs may include painting, drywall, carpet, landscaping, etc.

PETIONVILLE, HaitiOCTOBER 20-27 God’s Littlest Angels (GLA) currently cares for about 100 children. The nannies are unable to give the children the one-on-one attention they so badly crave and deserve. This is the area in which our team will be serving. The team will also be spending time assisting in building projects on the new GLA property.

This October Faith Church has two teams serving in our region and in the world. Please keep both teams in your prayers as they serve, pray, and encourage those they interact with. Pray for safety and health as they travel and that the Lord’s name would be made great throughout the U.S. and the world.

Meets Wednesday nights - NEW TIME - 6:30 pm

Dinner & Community Building- 5:30-6:30 pm ($6 adults; $2 child)

The Gathering is an opportunity to grow in your relationship with God through praise, worship, biblical teaching and experiential prayer in community with others. All this is

done in a relaxed atmosphere in the Atrium at our Dyer Campus.

Page 10: The Paper October Issue 4 Vol. 1

This year, Faith-Highland turns 1 year old…and 50 years old…and 106 years old. We aren’t confused—let me explain. A year ago, Faith Church (celebrating 50 this year) enfolded First Christian Reformed Church of Highland (106 years in existence) to start Faith-Highland (who is now 1). And what a year it’s been in all of our histories. These two churches came together and gelled quickly in the focus of reaching our community for Jesus, and He has blessed our efforts tremendously. We have seen people whose family homes were/are within a block of our facility make Faith Highland their church home. People came from every marketing channel we utilized to let the community know we were startings. Existing members stepped-up in a huge way to serve. Faith members who joined the launch brought our culture and a great spirit to Faith-Highland. So many local people are being reached and connected that we have space issues, and we are thankful to have them! On our horizon,

we plan to: expand our nursery to care for the next generation that the Lord is bringing, begin a third service on Sunday evenings to help with space (and also reach those who are unable to attend on a Saturday night or Sunday morning), and enfold another church out of Faith-Highland. What we have seen, I believe, is the Lord blessing the right hearts of His people. First CRC could have continued for a long time as they were. But since they weren’t reaching their community, they decided to make a radical change and chose to ap-proach Faith Church Faith Church contin-ues to follow wherev.er God leads in our multi-site movement, including enfolding a 105-year-old existing church from a different denomination. I think God knew the hearts of these churches. He has blessed their will-ingness to step out of their comfort zones, into the unknown, in order to see people’s eternities changed for His glory. My family and I have been truly bless-ed to be a part of this movement of God, and we can’t wait to see what He’s going to do in the future.

Purchase with a PurposeGospel PatronsBy John Rinehart

The great movements of God in history were often led by well-known preachers and pioneering missionaries. Few of us have heard the behind-the-scenes stories of the men and women who partnered with them, funded them, and contributed to many amazing works of God.

This book takes us inside three stories from history to show how great movements of God happen and how we can:

• Find our parts to play in God’s kingdom • Give our lives to the things that matter most • Live for a legacy that we can be proud of
