A Message From the President

Bob Sacco

2014 has brought changes to ORPA and much success. Highpower is fi rmly in the capable hands of ORPA Past-Presidents Gwen and Keith Bailey. Th ey put together anoth-er great clinic at Camp Perry. Our junior teams are doing well and are nationally recognized in their dis-ciplines. Th e dedicated coaches and parents are to be commended for fostering the future of shooting sports through these tremendous young athletes.

Th is year we will miss the full in-volvement of longtime Trustee and Vice President of Operations Alan

Joseph. He will remain Member-ship Director but cannot continue as an offi cer due to his move to Ken-tucky to assume the role he loves, working with collegiate shooters as the Head Rifl e Coach at Morehead State University. I’m sure there are many more All- Americans in Alan’s future as there have been many in the past at Xavier University where Alan coached for many years. Don’t be surprised to fi nd your renewals and membership requests going to a Kentucky P.O. Box to reach Alan. Alan has served the Association faithfully for many years and can be counted on to continue his excellent eff orts from his new base in Ken-tucky.

Th ere will be a dues increase ef-fective in February 2015, avoid the increase and renew now or consid-er extending your membership at

the current rates, your continuing membership is greatly appreciated. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as President of the Association and meeting members at the NRA Annual meeting, the OGCA meet-ings, in the pits at Camp Perry and at Cowboy Action events has been a real joy. Knowing that so many members volunteer and participate in activities that foster our sport and guarantee our freedoms is humbling and gratifying.

Th ank you to all our ORPA offi cers, Trustees, volunteers and members, you make the Association strong and should be rightfully proud of all your eff orts. Let’s do more in 2015.

Cowboy Corner

We successfully completed the sec-ond annual Ohio State Wild Bunch Match, called “Wild Times at Hard Times” which was hosted by the Piqua Fish and Game Protective Association in Piqua, Ohio. It’s the final one of the four major match-es held in Ohio this year. As a re-minder, Smoke In The Woods, the Midwest Territorial Black Powder Championship was held in April, the Ohio State SASS Championship was held in May, and Guns Of Au-gust, the Mideast Regional / Four-day Match was held in August. Nine Ohio Rifle Pistol Association mem-bers took part.

There were four categories of com-petition at “Wild Times at Hard Times". They included Modern, Traditional, 59er and Ladies. Com-petitors came from all over the area. There were many experienced Model 1911 shooters who had been shooting “Ole Slab Sides” for quite a while as well as some shooters who were relatively new to Wild Bunch too. The first day started off in typ-ical Autumn Ohio fashion - grey, windy and cold. Match Director Mean Gun Mark and co-host Boaz, went over the safety rules and made several announcements. After the Pledge Of Allegiance, we headed di-rectly into the match.

Ohio Wild Bunch Championship, Oct. 25-26

The Wild Bunch was a 1969 western movie directed by Sam Peckinpah about an outlaw gang and their ex-ploits on the Texas Mexican Border around 1913. According to the SASS handbook, SASS Wild Bunch™ Ac-tion Shooting is supposed to repli-cate by historical reenactment the old western movie. Costuming is a big factor in SASS and so it is here, with the emphasis put on period US military from 1900 to 1916, west-ern cowpoke and Edwardian period fashion. Dress like that worn by the movie characters Pike, Dutch, Lyle, or Tector are also acceptable. Blastin Brad was the epitome of the period military officer.

In Wild Bunch Action Shooting a lot of the action resembles the clos-ing scene of the Wild Bunch movie. Participants compete with firearms typical of those used by military, civilians and outlaws just after the turn of the 20th century. As I men-tioned, weaponry includes the Colt (or replica) 1911 semi-auto pistols single stack steel frame in .45 ACP. The 1911 pistol is divided into two categories, the Traditional which replicates the “issued” military style handgun and the Modern which can have adjustable sights, beaver-tail grip safeties, etc.

Also needed is a lever-action rifle, and they can be original or replicas

of lever or slide-action rifles manu-factured from 1860 until 1899. They incorporate a tubular magazine and an exposed hammer and must be chambered in a pistol caliber of .40 caliber or larger. 44-40 and 45 Colt seem to predominate.

A Winchester Model 97 or Model 12 pump shotgun rounds out the weaponry. The Winchester pump must be in 12 gauge, can be an orig-inal or replica and either Civilian or Military configuration.

Mean Gun Mark and Boaz had the shooting competition staged in very unique stages where scoring is based on accuracy and speed. They did a super job in scenario design by using more difficult targets such as knock downs, falling plates and they put some rifle and pistol targets at greater distances than typically found in traditional Cowboy Ac-tion events. Because of the higher power factor needed to qualify for Wild Bunch, the full power rifle and pistol ammunition made shooters appreciate competing at a higher skill level. Their Wild Bunch Action Shooting scenarios were a hoot!

5

The shooter came to the ready line having loaded six rounds in the shotgun, ten rounds in the rifle and a five round .45ACP magazine in the gun. The scenario required at least twenty .45s to be fired. The shooter started between the two center posts in a “Texas surrender” position. After saying the line, at the beep, the shooter had to shoot between the posts, two separate five round sweeps with the pistol on the pistol targets. Then they moved to either the door or window and repeated the sequence on the distant rifle targets until empty. Then acquir-

ing the shotgun, they had to shoot three knock down targets from any shooting position, then move and shoot the other three targets from any other shooting position. Final-ly, they acquired the rifle and shot two separate sweeps on the rifle tar-gets. It took about as much time to shoot it as it took you to read this. But, Blackjack Beeson managed to get off all 20 pistol, 6 shotgun and 10 rifle in 34.62 seconds, in multiple positions. Shazam!

Old western movie buffs and serious shooters alike agree the use of vin-

tage style as well as turn of the 20th century firearms, unique costum-ing, challenging targets, and fast ac-tion make Wild Bunch shooting one of the most interesting of all cowboy action shooting sports for spectators and contestants alike.

2015: The Year for Fullbore - A new Ohio NRA Registered Fullbore Match in April By Charles Rowe

8

With the World Fullbore matches being held in the United States this year at Camp Perry, there has been a renewed interest in fullbore shoot-ing. Many have heard of fullbore, but aren’t quite sure what exactly it is (or why it’s different than Palma). As a quick primer on what fullbore is all about, here are some high-lights. Fullbore can be most easily described as a Palma match that in-cludes firing from the 300, 500 and/or 600 yard lines (in addition to the normal 800, 900 and 1000 yard lines for Palma). Like Palma, it is limited to .308 or .223 cartridges and rifles with iron sights (although there are exceptions for F-class and optics shooting listing in the NRA rule book), and has weight limitations on bullets (156gr for .308 and 92gr for .223). Like Palma, it is all fired prone, but in many countries, at the shorter distances the match is fired “two to a mound” (or even three to a mound in some places), meaning two shooters pair fire on the same target while scoring each other. There is a 45 second time limit in which to fire each shot, so shooters can’t wait on the wind for their ideal condition, making it all that much more challenging of a match. In fullbore, there are two sighting shots allowed at each yard line. However, fullbore sighters are “convertible”, meaning that if they are keepers, then the shooter can elect to ‘con-vert’ one or both (the 1st and 2nd, or just the 2nd, but not the 1st only) to record shots. It makes you real-ly try hard to get those first sighters “in there”, and is great to not have to ‘waste a great shot’ on a sighter like we do in most highpower matches.

There are two main types of full-bore, with two separate rulebooks: NRA International Fullbore, and ICFRA Fullbore. ICFRA stands for International Confederation of Full-bore Rifle Associations, and they will be the governing body for the World Championship at Camp Per-ry. NRA fullbore utilizes most of the targets highpower shooters are familiar with in the U.S. (the stan-dard MR-1 and LR targets at 600, 800, 900 & 1000 yards), and the MR-63 and MR-65 for 300 & 500 yards respectively. The ICFRA system uti-lizes a totally different target system, one based on a five-point scale (a “5” being the highest shot value and “1” being the lowest, vs the 10-point scale in the US system), with “V’s” instead of “X’s” as the tie-breakers. It is very odd at first to hear scorers yelling out “V Bull!” instead of “X” during ICFRA matches. Not only are the V-targets scored differently, the 300 and 600 yard versions have a smaller 10 ring (oops, make that a 5 ring!), and in combination with their larger black bull, makes for a devilishly difficult and challenging target!

Beyond the scoring and target dif-ferences, there are some other no-table differences between NRA and ICFRA rules. The ones that might impact U.S. shooters the most would be: sling width is limited to 2” (actu-ally, its metric equivalent of 50mm), nothing higher that 12” (300mm) is allowed on the firing line (so no range carts or shooting stools), no wind speed or direction indicators are allowed on the firing line (so no Kestrals or tape on spotting scope

stands), and triggers are limited to 1.1 pounds (500 grams) or greater.

If you’re a long-range shooter and like Palma matches, or enjoy shoot-ing in the Palma rifle class at LR matches, fullbore might be right up your alley. Many of us will never be able to travel overseas to shoot at other future World matches (the last matches were held in Australia in 2011, and the next are being held in New Zealand in 2019), so the match-es at Camp Perry this year may be our only chance to shoot shoulder to shoulder with international com-petitors of the highest caliber (pun intended). For those interested in shooting the World matches, and also considering the NRA National Fullbore Championships being held at Perry immediately prior to the Worlds, some practice might be in order, both to obtain zeros and get familiar with a new and different sort of match.

While there are some notable, big-name fullbore matches held around the country every year (Lodi, WI and Butner, NC come to mind), there ar-en’t too many opportunities in Ohio to shoot fullbore, especially before the upcoming matches in August at Perry. To help shooters out with that potential problem, the Alliance Rifle Club, in Malvern, Ohio, which has 200, 300, 600, 800, 900 and 1000 yard firing lines, has decided to host a fullbore match this year. It will be held early in the season so as to avoid conflicting with other match-es already on shooters’ calendars, and will be conducted under NRA International Fullbore rules (al-

9though they are encouraging shoot-ers who intend to shoot the Worlds to comply with ICFRA rules, such as trigger and sling requirements, so as to get good practice in for the Perry matches). The match will be a two-day affair (Saturday and Sunday), and the course of fire will include 60 shots for record on each day, so that each competitor will fire enough record shots to earn an NRA Inter-

national Fullbore classification card. A significant portion of the collect-ed match fees will be going back to shooters in the form of prize money, and for those who might need ze-roes (or just want some extra trigger time), a team match will be held on the Friday before the match (free of charge for registered competitors).

The match will be limited to the

first 50 registered competitors, so pre-registration is strongly advised. Information on the club location, course of fire, the match bulletin, how to pre-register, and answers to other questions can be found on the club’s website (www.AllianceRifle-Club.us), or by contacting the match director (Charles Rowe, [email protected]). Come out and shoot, and let’s enjoy a year of fullbore!

Smallbore Junior Olympic Regional Championships in December on Two Weekends The Ohio Junior Olympic Regional Championship (JORC) Match will be held Dec. 6 at the Vienna Fish & Game Club located at 1508 Youngstown Kingsville Road, Vienna, Ohio 44473. There will also be a JORC at the Hugh Wylie Memorial Range located in the basement of Converse Hall, 2121 Tuttle Parkway on the Ohio State Univer-sity campus in Columbus Ohio on Dec. 13. The Vienna weekend is also the ORPA State Match.

For more information, please contact ORPA Junior Smallbore Director Russ Evans at [email protected].

Indoor Pistol at Warren Gun Club The NRA has approved the Warren Gun Club’s ap-plication to hold seven 1800 indoor pistol matches. The director is David W. Bowser - 330-219-4440. The matches are held the third Sunday of each month October 1914 thru April 2015, The match dates are October 19th, November 16th, and December 21st in 2014 and January 18th, Feb-ruary 15th, March15th and April 19th in 2015.

Important: Date Change - 2014National Matches Jr. Smallbore Camp

As many of you smallbore shooters are aware, the 2014National Smallbore Championships will not be held atCamp Perry this summer. This required a date changefor the National Junior Smallbore Camp which has alwaysbeen held during the Prone Phase of Smallbore Nationals. This year’s camp will run from Saturday, July 5 throughThursday, July 10. We will still be using the wonderfulcovered Petrarca Range at Camp Perry and will still havethe great and dedicated staff of NRA certified coaches. There will only be 62 firing points open to us this summerinstead of our 72 points so those who are interested inattending camp will want to get their camp forms in early. The camp form for 2014 should be available on the NRAwebsite in early March. Remember that you need asectional score for your camp application also so planthat into your competition schedule this spring. Andquestions should be directed to Russ Evans [email protected] or (330) 534-5344.
