Asweentertheholidayseasonandcelebrate2012,ithasbeenmyhonortoserveaschairofTheExecutiveLeadershipCouncilBoardthisyear.FrommeetingwithPresidentObamainJanuary–tojoiningtogetherthispastOctobertofocusonhowwecanLead.Elevate.Change.–wehavegainedagreaterfocusonhowTheELCcanmakeasignificantdifferenceforgenerationstocome.
AsweworktoincreaserepresentationofAfrican-AmericanleadersinthetoppositionsofFortune500companiesandoncorporateboards,weaskedseveralCEOstoreviewandassessourtwostrategicinitiatives:1)toincreasethenumberofAfricanAmericansservinginCEOpositionsandthoseoneortwolevelsbelowineachFortune500companybyanetadditionofatleastone;and2)toincreasethenumberofseatsheldbyAfricanAmericansonthecorporateboardsofpublicly-tradedcompaniesbyatleast200overthenextfiveyears.
OurinitiativesareintendedtofocusTheELConachievingtheseoutcomes,workingwithcorporateAmerica.TheCEOswe’vespokenwithsupporttheprocessandareaskinghowtogetthisdone.ThatgivesTheELCagreatopportunitytohelpleadersgetit,understandit,andattheendofthedayaddshareholdervaluetocustomersandothers.WecanshinealightonthelackofdiversityatthetopandworktogethertocollectivelyfigureoutwhatittakestodriveinclusionacrosscorporateAmerica.
KeytothediscussionisthatELCmembersarenotspeaking“at”butfrom“within”corporateAmerica,andthatrequiressolidleadersatthehelmofourorganization.PleasejoinmeinacknowledgingRonParkerasTheELC’spresidentandchiefexecutiveofficerandBricksonDiamondaschiefoperatingofficer.Undertheirleadership,IhavenodoubtTheELC,itsmembersandstaffwillachievegreatsuccess.
We’remakingprogress,andachievingbothofourgoalswillrequireourcollectiveenergy,leadershipandcapability.Often,wemaybethesolovoiceatthetabletohelpotherleadersbetterunderstandthevaluethatdiversityofthought,culture,peopleandperspectivedelivertothebottomline.
IwouldliketothankJessicaIsaacs,previousELCboardchair,forprovidingtheleadershipthatIamhonoredtocontinue.IwouldliketoalsooffermyappreciationtoMiltonIrvin,whoservedasinterimvicechairin2012,andwelcomeCarlaHarriswhowillbecomevicechairinJanuary.LetmealsoacknowledgeLayshaWard,whowillbeendinghertenureasFoundationboardchairinJanuary.Shewasatremendousleaderandgreatpartneroverthepasttwoyears.
WorkingtogetherasTheELC,wecanhelpfuturegenerationsofleadersserveatthetopofFortune500companiesandoncorporateboards.MycontributionwillbetoharnesstheenergyandintellectofallourmembersandmoveourinitiativesfromaspirationalgoalstorealityforthebenefitofAmerica.Thankyoufortheopportunitytocontinuethemomentumin2013,anddeliverwhatweknowwecanachievetogether.

TheboardofdirectorsofTheExecutiveLeadershipCouncil(ELC)announcedRonaldC.ParkerasTheELC’sandTheExecutiveLeadershipFoundation’s(ELF)presidentandchiefexecutiveofficerandBricksonDiamondastheorganization’schiefoperatingofficeronOctober17.
InJuly2012,theboardofdirectorsbegananextensivesearchtofilltheorganization’spresidentandCEOposition.Duringthattime,theboardalsodeterminedthatachiefoperatingofficerwasneededtohelpTheELCmeetitsorganizationalgoals.Fortheboard,itwasimportanttomaintaintheintegrityoftheprocess,ensuringthatitwasobjectiveandcomprehensive.Theboardconductedinterviewswithanumberoftalentedexecutivesbeforeappointingthenewteam.
TheELCboardhadpreviouslyappointedParkerastheinterimpresidentandCEOinMay2012.HehasbeenanactiveELCmemberforthepast17years,servingonbothELCandELFboards.
Inhisnewrole,ParkeroverseesTheELC’smembershiprecruitmentandgrowth;talentandprofessionalpipelinedevelopmentprograms;theCommunityImpactInitiative;andtherealizationofELC’sfive-yearstrategicgoalstoadd500AfricanAmericanstotheCEOpositionandthoseonetotwolevelsbelowinFortune500companiesaswellas200AfricanAmericanstotheboardsofpubliclytradedcompaniesby2017.
Parkerrecentlyretiredfromhispostasseniorvicepresidentforhumanresources,laborrelationsandglobaldiversityandinclusionforPepsiCo,Inc.Heworkedinthefoodandbeveragesectorfornearly30years.
TheELCboard,incollaborationwithPresidentandCEORonaldC.Parker,alsoannouncedtheselectionofBricksonDiamondastheorganization’snewchiefoperatingofficer.ThenewpositionwasconsideredintegraltoTheELCandELFtoensurefuturegrowthandservicetoitsmembers.Diamondwillbe
responsibleforthedailyoperationsofTheELCandwillreportdirectlytothepresidentandCEO.
Diamondhasmorethan17yearsofexperienceintheinvestmentmanagementbusiness,andhespent11ofthoseyearswithCapitalGroupPrivateClientServices.HewasfounderandledBigAnswers,LLC,anindependentstrategicconsultingpracticefocusedonbuildingcapacityintheareasofinvestmentstewardship,organizationalplanningandbringingservicesandofferingstomarket.DiamondisalsoanELCmember.

ItismyhonortoserveasthenewpresidentandCEOofTheExecutiveLeadershipCouncil(ELC)andFoundation,andwelcomeBricksonDiamondasournewchiefoperatingofficer.AsaformerPepsiCoexecutive,Ihadthepleasureofsupportingmanyofoursignatureprogramsandevents,andservingontheCouncilandFoundationboards.However,inmynewrole,IlookforwardtoworkingwithourleadershipandmemberstohelpELCreachitsfullpotential.Overthenextyear,Iwillbefocusedonmembershiprecruitmentandgrowth;talentandprofessionalpipelinedevelopmentprograms;theCommunityImpactInitiative;therealizationofELC’sfive-yearstrategicgoals;andmostimportantly,providingahighlevelofservicetoourmembersandmembercompanies.
Overthelast26yearswehavewitnessedgreatthingsfromourorganizationandIbelievethebestisyettocome.In1986,wesetouttobuildaleadershippipelinethatwouldincreasethenumberofAfricanAmericansinseniorexecutivepositionsinFortune500companies.Today,weestimatethattherearemorethan800AfricanAmericansinleadershippositions,includingahandfulofCEOs,andournationhasanAfrican-Americanpresidentservingasecondterm.Itbegsthequestion,whatwillTheELCaccomplishandlooklikeoverthenext25years?
Whatwedoknowiswhatmadeussuccessfulin1986willnotdriveourgrowthandprogressmovingforward.Today’sbusinessenvironmentisglobalinscope.Informationandcommunicationsmoveatthespeedoflight,24/7.Geo-politicshasanimpactoneverymajorenterprise.Inthefaceofthisrapidlychangingworld,ourfocuswillbetoraisetheprofileofourgreatorganizationamongtargetaudiencessuchasboarddirectorsandCEOs,andshifttheirperceptionandbehaviorwhenitcomestocorporatediversity.Wealsomustdeterminehowweeffectivelygrowourmembershipwhilemaintainingourintegrity,andatthesametimepositionourorganizationtotakealeadershiproleontheglobalstage.
Ourworkismoreimportantthanever,aswebuildthenextgenerationofcorporateleadersfromtheclassroomtotheboardroom,whetherit’sthroughourpipelineprograms,CommunityImpactorourstrategicgoals.Asyouknow,withourgoals,itisthefirsttimeanorganizationhasembarkedonsuchanambitiousinitiativetopromotediversity,inclusionandexecutiveleadership.
WeareaggressivelyworkingtoincreasethenumberofAfrican-AmericanseniorexecutivesservinginCEOpositionsandthoseoneandtwolevelsbelowinFortune500companiesandontheboardsofpubliclytradedcompaniesbyatleast200overfiveyears.Andwemustdosowithagreatersenseofurgency.
Therehasbeenagreatdealofenergyandexcitementgeneratedbytheseinitiatives.CEOswhoattendedour12thAnnualCEODiversitySummitareeagertohelpandwanttoknowhow.Wewillseizethisopportunitytoincreasemomentumandyieldtangibleresults.
Ourmembershiprepresentsanexceptionalpoolofseniorexecutivetalent.WewillcontinuetoworktoincreasethevisibilityofourmembersandtherelevanceofTheELC,whileexertingpositiveinfluenceonthecultureandmindsetofglobalcorporateenterprises.You,ourmembers,willplayavitalroleinthiseffortbyhelpingusalignourgoalswiththoseofyourcompanies.
Throughouttheyearwewillengagemembersatseveral“gamechanging”events.WelookforwardtohostingyouatanInaugurationreceptioninJanuary,holdingaCorporateBoardInitiativepanelatTheNewYorkTimesonFebruary21,andconductingourWinterGeneralMembershipMeetingFebruary27–March2.Attheseevents,youwilllearnmoreaboutthetoneanddirectionwehavesetfor2013andbeyond.Weare,andalwayswillbe,anorganizationthatsupportsoneanotherandfocusesourenergiesonnotjusthelpingourselves,butassistingotherAfricanAmericansinbecomingthenextgenerationofleaders.
Moreimportantly,wewantyourfeedbackonwhataddsvaluetoyourmembershipandwhatchangesneedtobemadetoexceedyourexpectationsandthoseofyourcompanies.Indeed,asTheELCworkshardtochangethegamerelatingtoAfricanAmericansincorporateAmerica,wedependonourcollectiveleadershipasanorganizationtomakesignificantstrides.Weallneedtoplayanactiverole.

Earlierthisyear,TheELCcompletedanothersuccessfulWinterGeneralMembershipMeetinginOrlando,whichhadarecordturn-outofmorethan180members,guestsandmember-applicants.AttendeesgatheredattheRitz-Carltontonetwork,participateinworkshopsandpanels,andexperiencethesightsandsoundsofOrlando.
WeaccomplishedanumberofgoalsattheWinterMeetingtoadvancethemissionofourorganization.OurvariouscommitteesmettodiscussplansfortheyearforELCprogramsandinitiatives.Thewintermeeting’stheme,“BusinessSucceedsWhenDiversityLeads:TheCalltoAction,”focusedprimarilyonmobilizingmemberstosupportourstrategicgoalstoincreaseAfricanAmericanrepresentationinCEOpositionsandthoseonetotwolevelsbelowaswellasonpubliclytradedboards.Membersparticipatedinbreak-outsessionswheretheytalkedabouthowtheycouldsupportthiseffort.Andassuch,ELCmemberswereenergizedbythediscussionsandmadepledgestopromoteandimplementtheinitiativeintheirrespectivecompanies.

Studieshaveindicatednearly40percentofAfrican-AmericanandHispanicstudentsinmajormetropolitanareasdon’tgraduatefromhighschoolontimeoratall.Manymoreareunpreparedforcollegeandcareers.Thestatisticspresentaseriouscrisisforthenation,theAfrican-AmericancommunityandfororganizationslikeTheExecutiveLeadershipCouncil(ELC)asweworktobuildastrongpipelineofAfrican-Americancorporateleaders.
In2010,workingthroughourcharitableaffiliate,TheExecutiveLeadershipFoundation(ELF),weannouncedtheCommunityImpactInitiativetohelpaddressthisissueandmakeastrategicinvestmentintheAfrican-Americancommunity.ItisthefirsttimeTheELCanditsFoundationhavemadesuchasignificantmonetarycommitment,initiallythroughagenerous$500,000,two-yeargranttoLEADPrograms.Thefollowingyearanothergrantfor$250,000wasmadetoINROADSaswellasa$25,000contributiontoABetterChance(ABC).
AsLEADandINROADSworktoclosetheachievementgapforAfrican-Americanmiddleandhighschoolstudents,ELCmembersareworkingside-by-sidewiththem.Membershaveprovidedin-kindsupport,servingasspeakersforLEAD’ssummerprogramshousedonvariouscollegecampusesaroundthecountryandasmentorsinINROADS’CollegeLinksinitiative.TheLEADprogramhasseena10percentincreaseinAfricanAmericansparticipatinginitsprogramssincereceivingourgrant,60ofwhomweredesignatedandfunded
asFoundationscholars.ELFalsohelpedfundthelaunchofLEAD’snewSummerEngineeringInstituteatCalTech.
ThroughINROADS,ourgranthelpedestablishtheorganization’sCollegeLinksprogram,whichisthepre-collegecomponentoftheINROADSinternshipprogram.CollegeLinkspreparesacademicallyhigh-performingstudentsforaholisticcollegeandcareerexperiencebyexposingthemtoprofessionsinscience,technology,engineering,math(STEM)andbusiness.Morethan100studentsfromChicagoandWashington,DC,participatedintheCollegeLinkspilot.
OurdonationtoABChelpedsupporttheireducationalandcharitableactivitiestohelpmoredisadvantagedAfrican-Americanstudentsgainaccesstoprestigious,independentdayandboardingschools.Havingaccesstoeducationalopportunitiesandtrainingwillhelpclosetheachievementgapandpreparetheseyoungpeopleforcollege.
Recognizingthesynergieswiththeseprograms,theCommunityImpactCommitteefacilitatedaMemorandumofUnderstandingamongtheseorganizationsinanefforttoleveragetheircollectivecapacitytoreachmorestudents.In2013,theCommitteewillexplorenewwaystoexpandtheFoundation’spartnershipwiththeseorganizationsandothergroupstogeneratetheresourcesneededtohaveagreaterimpact.
