Math that Matters Most

12

Current research shows that three key areas most contribute to readiness for college and career training:

Problem Solving and Data Analysis (quantitative literacy) Heart of Algebra (mastery of linear equations) Passport to Advanced Math (familiarity with more complex equations)

Problems Grounded in Real World Contexts

13

Students will engage with questions that:

Directly relate to the work performed in college and career Include charts, graphs, and passages likely to be encountered in science, social science, and other majors and careers Feature multistep applications to solve problems in science, social science, career scenarios, and other real-life contexts

Analysis in Science and in History/Social Studies

14

Students will apply their reading, writing, language, and math skills to answer questions in science, history, and social studies contexts.

Students will encounter challenging texts and informational graphics that pertain to issues and topics like these in the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section and the Math section

U.S. Founding Documents and the Great Global Conversation

15

The redesigned SAT will include one of the following:

An excerpt from one of the Founding Documents (U.S.) A text from the ongoing Great Global Conversation about freedom, justice, and human dignity (e.g. Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

No prior knowledge of the text will be required.

First administration of the new SAT in the U.S.: What we heard

19

First administration of the new SAT: what we heard

From the Media

► “The new version of the SAT aims more than ever to measure core skills taught in school, such as reading charts, analyzing evidence and applying algebra in mathematical problems.” -- Nick Anderson, Washington Post

► “Not so tricky. More straightforward. Guessing allowed.” – Jennifer C. Kerr, Associated Press

► “But district leaders say the new SAT, which was revamped in order to better reflect what students learn in school instead of emphasizing rote memorization of obscure vocabulary words and math formulas, provides the best opportunity yet to level the playing field.” – Lauren Camera, U.S. News and World Report

► “More than one million high school students have used new, free test prep materials to study for the revamped SAT — four times as many as the number who use commercial test prep in the USA each year.” – Greg Toppo, USA Today

College Board Score Choice™ enables students to choose which scores to send to colleges, consistent with an institution’s policy.

Examples of college score choice policies:

College U considers your highest section scores across all SAT dates submitted. You will be instructed to send scores from every SAT test date on which you received a top score in each section: mathematics, critical reading and writing. Final admission decisions are based only on your highest section scores, and College U updates your records each time you receive new scores.

When considering students for admission, scholarships or Honors/Scholars selection, State U considers the best official composite/combined score from a single test administration.

Score Choice™

Concordance is a valid, proven way to compare scores from different assessments.

For the High School Class of 2016: Given that most students in the Class of 2016 will submit pre-May 2016 SAT scores only, most colleges will convert new SAT scores to pre-May 2016 SAT scores.

For the High School Class of 2017: Given that most students in the Class of 2017 will submit new SAT scores only, most colleges will convert pre-May 2016 SAT scores to new SAT.
