The Network … a Publication of University Presbyterian Church October 2016 I wish you could see what the congregation looks like from my vantage point on the chancel each Sunday morning. (As an aside: if you sign up to be a liturgist or join our awesome choir, you can have this experience!) What is impressive is that even within our relatively small congregation, I witness a great diversity of God’s people of faith looking back at me each Sunday morning. There are older faces of those grown wise and experienced through years of living, and younger faces of university students and youth. There are dark faces, light faces, and every shade in between. Worshipping with us are people who come from countries on the other side of the globe and others who have lived their entire lives here in Buffalo. Our diversity extends into the realm of faith, as well. On the theological spectrum, some among us would likely fall on the more evangelical endbelieving in the inerrancy of the Bible, for examplewhile others would subscribe to a more liberal interpretation of scripture. And yet, somehow, this diverse group of people unites each week. We unite around the story that has claimed our hearts and lives: the story of the God of love and grace known to us in Jesus. World Communion Sunday on Oct 2 is a time when the Church is invited to reflect and give thanks for this story that unites us with brothers and sisters of faith around the globe. We come to the communion table in symbolic unity with Christians around the globe whom we have never met but with whom we nevertheless share a common bond. Yet, here at UPC, this act of uniting with the diverse Body of Christ is more than just symbolic. We can see this diversity within our own congregation and experience that unity around the God’s table of grace as we stand side by side with one another to receive the sacrament. In very real terms, World Communion Sunday is something we at UPC experience every Sunday! What a great gift and blessing! Shalom, Tracy

The Network … a Publication of

University Presbyterian Church

October 2016

I wish you could see what the congregation looks like from my vantage point on the chancel each Sunday

morning. (As an aside: if you sign up to be a liturgist or join our awesome choir, you can have this

experience!) What is impressive is that even within our relatively small congregation, I witness a great

diversity of God’s people of faith looking back at me each Sunday morning. There are older faces of those

grown wise and experienced through years of living, and younger faces of university students and youth.

There are dark faces, light faces, and every shade in between. Worshipping with us are people who come

from countries on the other side of the globe and others who have lived their entire lives here in Buffalo.

Our diversity extends into the realm of faith, as well. On the theological spectrum, some among us would

likely fall on the more evangelical end—believing in the inerrancy of the Bible, for example—while others

would subscribe to a more liberal interpretation of scripture.

And yet, somehow, this diverse group of people unites each week. We unite around the story that has

claimed our hearts and lives: the story of the God of love and grace known to us in Jesus.

World Communion Sunday on Oct 2 is a time when the Church is invited to reflect and give thanks for this

story that unites us with brothers and sisters of faith around the globe. We come to the communion table in

symbolic unity with Christians around the globe whom we have never met but with whom we nevertheless

share a common bond.

Yet, here at UPC, this act of uniting with the diverse Body of Christ is more than just

symbolic. We can see this diversity within our own congregation and experience

that unity around the God’s table of grace as we stand side by side with one another

to receive the sacrament.

In very real terms, World Communion Sunday is something we at UPC experience

every Sunday! What a great gift and blessing!

Shalom,

Tracy

University Presbyterian Food Panty

Needs Your HELP!

Are you looking for ways to stay active and help out? Are you a

student who needs volunteer hours? Would you like to meet new

people and help our community?

Volunteer

at the University Presbyterian Church

Food Pantry

Stop by on a Tuesday or Thursday between 12 pm and 4 pm and meet the current

volunteers and maybe some of the clients. See what it’s all about. Agree to work and

meet wonderful individuals who are already helping out.

The 4 ½ hour shifts once a month will be interesting and worthwhile. Should you

want to help more (yes!!!) you are most welcome. PLUS, you will feel good about the

time you spend with us, helping our neighbors. Have a friend or two you would like

to bring with you, that would be wonderful.

We are in need of new individuals to help us with distributing

food to our clients. You will help guide a client through our

"store" to help them choose their groceries.

You assist with helping to stock shelves.

You may be interested in learning to work the check in desk.

Call the Church Office 836-7660 for additional information.

Many Thanks for considering

helping out at our Food Pantry

needed. We will have more information on when & where to bring your delightful creation,

2016 Fall-Winter small group Bible study, led by Gladys Gifford.

The 2016-2017 guide is: Who is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens Makes , by Judy Yates Siker. We resume our small group Bible study, examining how the various perspectives of the Gospel writers and the apostle Paul shape our understanding of Jesus. The first five will be offered Wednesday evenings, 7-8:30 pm, October 26, November 2 & 9 & 30, December 7 at 174 Capen Blvd (Gladys and Alvin’s home) The guide offers four more lessons, including perspectives from the book of Hebrews, non-canonical gospels, Abrahamic faiths, and contemporary cultures. These four lessons may be offered in the spring of 2017. Please sign up with Gladys Gifford, 836-2825, [email protected], by October 9, so that study guides may be ordered (cost $8.00 each).

BUNDLE UP BUFFALO!

We will again be participating in the outerwear

drive for Jericho Road Community Health

Center. We will be collecting new or gently used

hats, scarves, gloves or mittens, coats, boots

and blankets in adult and child sizes. There will

be a collection box in the Holzwarth Room. The

Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 6th for the Deacons

Of course you can take some soup home for the Seahawks game the next night. Soup & pie will be available for sit down or take out

after the first service.

Howard Henry will be ordering JUST COFFEE on October 3rd. Sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway with your orders. Remember these packages of

coffee make excellent Christmas gifts for friends and family.

WATCH OVER IT.

Let's make a difference!

School Supply Drive update…. we received a letter from Salvation Army thanking all of us

for the great school supply items that were donated by our church. While this thank you was

appreciated, please take a moment to read the letter from Jackie a mom who was in need.

This mom’s letter and two other children’s letters are posted on the Church News bulletin

board in the hallway. Please take a moment to stop and read them. It will bring a smile to

your face and warmth to your heart.

Jackie’s letter reads….

Thank You !!!

“I would like to thank you for your generosity. In

this great time of need, I cannot tell you how

much I appreciate the donation of backpack and

school supplies for my son. It is a great weight

lifted from my shoulders, being able to send him

to school with fresh new supplies to start his

year off right. What may seem like something

small to you means the world to me and my

son. Thank you! Thank you! Thank You! I will

certainly pay it forward when I am able.”

Too many of us lead hectic lives.

Our communities are filled with violence and suffering.

Our personal pain and struggles can overwhelm us.

How do we respond? How can we cope?

University Presbyterian Church welcomes Christians from all traditions to unite in a

special contemplative worship experience as we seek spiritual strength for the living of our

days. Based on the style of worship practiced in the Taizé Christian community in France,

these services offered on the First Friday of each month provide an oasis at the end of the

week for all who are weary, troubled, or rushed. Special music from guest musicians,

meditative songs, prayers, candles, and scripture readings allow each of us to find a quiet

place of prayer and spiritual centering.

We invite you to join us on Friday, October 7, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. University

Presbyterian Church is located at 3330 Main St., Buffalo (across the street from UB South

Campus) with parking available in the church lot off Niagara Falls Boulevard. The church

is also conveniently accessible using public transportation by taking bus or train to the

University Metro station. Questions can be directed to the church office at 836-7660.
