The Network … a Publication of University Presbyterian Church November 2016 Gratitude takes nothing for granted. This Thanksgiving season, I want to share my gratitude to the membership and friends of UPC who give so much of their time and efforts to our ministries. Your hands have been God’s hands as you have driven people to appointments, served communion, helped prepare a funeral reception, made soup for a community event, taken minutes at a meeting, organized a clothing drive, written a note of condolence, and shelved food at the food pantry. When you shared your talents through song, administration, or building maintenance, you have enriched our faith and our common life. When you attended a funeral for a member of our church, your very presence helped proclaim the good news of the Resurrection. We have all benefitted when you showed up to clean, make coffee, or hand out bulletins. Thank you for letting your hands be used by God! Shalom! Tracy

The Network … a Publication of

University Presbyterian Church

November 2016

Gratitude takes nothing for granted. This Thanksgiving season, I want to share my gratitude

to the membership and friends of UPC who give so much of their time and efforts to our

ministries. Your hands have been God’s hands as you have driven people to appointments,

served communion, helped prepare a funeral reception, made soup for a community event,

taken minutes at a meeting, organized a clothing drive, written a note of condolence, and

shelved food at the food pantry.

When you shared your talents through song, administration, or building maintenance, you

have enriched our faith and our common life. When you attended a funeral for a member of

our church, your very presence helped proclaim the good news of the Resurrection. We

have all benefitted when you showed up to clean, make coffee, or hand out bulletins.

Thank you for letting your hands be used by God!

Shalom!

Tracy

Welcome to Our New Neighborhood

Little Free Library

Sponsored by University Presbyterian Church

Built and installed by the University Heights Tool Library

How Does This Library Work?

This Little Library offers a way to share good things to read – favorite books from your child-

hood or books you would recommend to friends; books that teach, intrigue and engage you.

All of us can help by keeping this collection stocked with good reading material.

Whose Library is This?

It belongs to everybody – neighbors, friends and people we don’t even know yet. Anyone

can use it. That’s why we want to take care of it.

Take a Book. If you see something you would like to read, take it home and enjoy!

Share It. Return it here, or to any Little Library or pass it on to a friend. If you fall in love

with it, keep it and bring another book when you can.

Give Books. Leave notes in them. Be a friend of all libraries by helping any way you

can.

Spread the word. Tell your neighbors know about us, bring them a book and let them know

where we are.

Do you have books to donate to the library?

You can put them in the bag in the Narthax or the shelf in the Holzwarth

Room.

Children’s books, novels - if it’s a book you like, bring it to share.

Election Day—November 8th and UPC’s Bake Good Sale...

As in past presidential elections the members and friends of UPC would bake all kinds of

desserts….cookies, pies, pastries, cakes, brownies, banana, cranberry, cinnamon breads,

and just about any scrumptious delicacy that they liked to make. Once again, 4 years later…

voting for a new president and so we offer the BAKE GOOD SALE. Help in making all these

wonderful desserts is needed. Take a moment to think about one your most delicious

desserts and plan to make one (or more) for our sale. Let’s make this years’ sale one for the

record book. LOTS & LOTS of delectable, mouth-watering chewy-gooey desserts are

needed. We will have more information on when & where to bring your delightful creation,

in the November NETWORK and upcoming bulletins. Thanks ladies and gentlemen…yes you

men can bake too.

THANK YOU!

Many thanks to all who helped to Bundle Up Buffalo! You have helped children

and adults in need in a very tangible way.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

UPC is holding their 5

th Community Soup program to fund small projects

through community meals. A group of people come together to share a meal at an

affordable price. All income from the meal is given as a grant to support a project

proposed by young people 15-25 years old to benefit the Buffalo community.

Everyone who purchases a meal has one vote to decide who gets the grant.

Why are we doing it? Many worthwhile projects require minimal funding and we are eager to engage

young people in developing projects to benefit the community. In doing so, they will expand their skills by

writing and presenting their proposals and eventually implementing projects if funded. Community Soup,

while raising money, also serves as a way to build community and to allow networking among attendees.

This event is taking place on Sunday, November 13, 2016 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in Reid Hall. The cost of

the meal is $5.00 per person. All ages are invited to attend and vote. Without diners, there will be no

funds for grants. So please come and invite your friends!

Update on Mexican Workers and Their Families

The recent ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement) raids in Buffalo and Orchard Park

ransacked homes and confiscated documents not only of Mexicans working in the United

States, but their citizen children. These families face an uncertain future and are turning to

the faith community for help.

Not only were documents taken, so was money, including some $9,000 one high schooler

was saving for college. The net effect is that some ten families in Buffalo have no way to

work and earn money. They have nothing to use for food, rent, phone, and other daily living

expenses.

Presbyterian, Episcopal, UCC, Unitarian, and other churches have been collecting food and

funds.

If you wish to contribute to this situation you can do so in two ways:

1)through University Presbyterian Church and we will pass on the funds. Checks should be

payable to University Presbyterian Church. Please mark checks or envelopes with the

notation “Mexican Families.”

2)directly to the Coalition for Economic Justice which is serving as the financial nexus.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 6th for the Deacons

Soup & Pie fund raiser.

Nobody has to eat and run to get home for the Bills game. The Bills are playing Monday night in Seattle.

Of course you can take some soup home for the Seahawks game the next night. Soup & pie will be available for sit down and take

out after the first and second service.

As the Holiday season arrives let’s give thanks

for the blessings we have been given. And please

find it in your heart to help our DONATE YOUR

SOLE program with gently used or new footwear

for those who are in need. With thanks for your

generosity in supporting our church.

On behalf of the Stewardship Committee we invite you to think of your talents and

offer us assistance in any of the following endeavors we have within our church. Yes,

your pledges are needed, however, your involvement in our church is just as needed.

You will meet great people, many you probably already know. You will be offering your

time in a very important way. As we move into a new year, could you offer a day or

two to help our food pantry or serve on a committee and help our committees thrive

and grow.

Are you interested in learning more about any of these activities? Please contact the

Church Business Office at 836-7660 for more details.

University Presbyterian Food Panty

Needs Your HELP!

Are you looking for ways to stay active and help out? Are you a

student who needs volunteer hours? Would you like to meet new

people and help our community?

Volunteer

at the University Presbyterian Church

Food Pantry

Stop by on a Tuesday or Thursday between 12 pm and 4 pm and meet the current

volunteers and maybe some of the clients. See what it’s all about. Agree to work and

meet wonderful individuals who are already helping out.

The 4 ½ hour shifts once a month will be interesting and worthwhile. Should you

want to help more (yes!!!) you are most welcome. PLUS, you will feel good about the

time you spend with us, helping our neighbors. Have a friend or two you would like

to bring with you, that would be wonderful.

We are in need of new individuals to help us with distributing

food to our clients. You will help guide a client through our

"store" to help them choose their groceries.

You assist with helping to stock shelves.

You may be interested in learning to work the check in desk.

Call the Church Office 836-7660 for additional information.

Many Thanks for considering

helping out at our Food Pantry

Too many of us lead hectic lives.

Our communities are filled with violence and suffering.

Our personal pain and struggles can overwhelm us.

How do we respond? How can we cope?

University Presbyterian Church welcomes Christians from all traditions to unite in a

special contemplative worship experience as we seek spiritual strength for the living of our

days. Based on the style of worship practiced in the Taizé Christian community in France,

these services offered on the First Friday of each month provide an oasis at the end of the

week for all who are weary, troubled, or rushed. Special music from guest musicians,

meditative songs, prayers, candles, and scripture readings allow each of us to find a quiet

place of prayer and spiritual centering.

We invite you to join us on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 5:30 to 6:00 PM.

University Presbyterian Church is located at 3330 Main St., Buffalo (across the street from

UB South Campus) with parking available in the church lot off Niagara Falls Boulevard.

The church is also conveniently accessible using public transportation by taking bus or train

to the University Metro station. Questions can be directed to the church office at 836-7660.
