What is a Mummy?

A mummy is a person and/or animal that have been preserved after death for the after life. The word mummy comes from a Latin word, mumia. Mumia translated to English means bitumen. Bitumen is a black organic pitch-like liquid that stains the skin.

How most Egyptian Mummies were MadeIt took a long time, start to finish, about 70 days to embalm the body. Here are

the steps they did in order.

First, the Egyptians washed and purified the body. Second, they removed all the organs in the body except the heart. Third, the body filled with stuffing. Fourth, the body was then dried by covering it with the substance natron, which absorbed moisture from the body. Fifth, in forty through fifty days, the stuffing from the body was removed and replaced with either linen or sawdust. Sixth, body was wrapped in strands of linen and covered in sheet/shroud. Finally, the body was placed in the stone coffin or in other words, a sarcophagus.

Why did Egyptians make Mummies?Egyptians made mummies because they believed that the

spirits, or the ka, would use the body in the afterlife. When the person was well preserved, the Egyptians believed the ka would recognize the body. Then, the god Anubis (had a head of a jackal) would prepare the body to be received by Osiris. Next, Osiris would then weigh the heart on a scale against a feather, called Ma’at. If the heart was lighter than the feather, Osiris would approve the pharaoh could then go to the Egyptian paradise, Yaru and have eternal life. If the heart was heavier, Osiris will not approve the ka and the ka would die.

What did the Egyptians do with the organs?

The Egyptians put them in jars. The jars were called canopic jars. Each organ went into a different jar. Each jar had a special top with the four sons of Horus, one on each jar. Imsety had a human head and protected the liver. Qebehsenuf had head of a falcon and guarded the intestines (guts). Hapy had the head of a baboon and protected the lungs. Duamatef had head of a jackal, he guarded the stomach. When this was all done, they would put them in a special chest, which went in the sarcophagus with the mummy.

King Tutankhamun/Tut was found in 1922 in November. He was discovered by the archaeologist, Howard Carter. He found King Tut in the Valley of Kings. King Tut had the best preserved royal tomb that has ever been discovered. King Tutankhamun, the boy king, was found to have been undisturbed for about three thousand years!

Some interesting facts about Mummies

Did you know that Egyptian mummies have been around since four thousand B.C.? The early Egyptian mummies were buried in shallow pits in the desert. The hot dry sand had quickly removed moisture that was inside the body. This had created a natural mummy. At the beginning of the Egyptian culture of mummification , they soaked the bodies in carbonic water or baking soda. By about the fifteen hundreds B.C., the process of mummification was more elaborate, when parts were removed from the body and more drying was involved. Animals were also mummified. They were usually the pharaoh or nobles pet.
