It was the 30th classroom reun-
ion The room was full of conver-
sation about who had married the
head cheerleader the star athlete
which classmates had passed away
who was divorced and of course
the one topic that is at every reun-
ion---HOW MANY DEGREES
had been achieved
One person in attendance was of
a religious order and gave the in-
vocation to start the nightrsquos activi-
ties After a mouth-watering din-
ner of tender T-bone steak cooked
to perfection baked potato smoth-
ered in butter chives bacon bits a
garden salad swimming in fat free
raspberry walnut vinaigrette dress-
ing and Texas sweet tea it was
time to get down to businessmdash
Those in attendance were asked
to take center stage and share some
aspect of their livesmdashtravels ac-
complishments future goals new
experiences The participants one
by one got up to speak on being a
grandparent for the first time trav-
eling to Canada on a business trip
and being elected mayor One per-
son was excited to have opened a
bakery another was looking for-
ward to opening his first car dealer-
ship yet another one was grateful
to be retired from the armed ser-
vices with a healthy body and
mind After a while people were
just talking about how many de-
grees they had in this field or that
field The audience could be seen
yawning and bobbing their heads
These speakers had been heard be-
fore at every other reunion Then
from the back of the room stands
this person to take center stage a
person who had been at every class
reunion but had never felt the need
to break the monotony until nowhellip
He proudly stands tall with the
microphone in his hand and clearly
stated ldquoIrsquom a custodian yoursquore a
custodian everyonersquos a custodianrdquo
The audience took notice of this
speaker and questioned his state-
ments---what was this person say-
ing
The person went on to say
ldquoThere are two definitions for the
word custodian One of the defini-
tions is lsquoa person responsible for
the care of a buildingrsquo This occu-
pation is intensive With gloves
and cleansers in tow custodians
see to it that bacteria and germs do
not find lsquoWelcomersquo signs and
should you amble into any part of a
building rest assured that the floors
will shine windows are smudge
free and when nature calls the re-
strooms with their lavender scent
are refreshing The building is ac-
cident free from spills broken glass
or debris that can cause bodily harm
Itrsquos back breaking work with all the
responsibilities and demands attached to it but a custodianrsquos touch is essen-
tial for any organization conducting
daily business The audience had stopped yawning
and bobbing their heads and seemed
to be eagerly anticipating the speakerrsquos next wordshellip
In an authoritative voice the speak-
er said ldquoThe second definition of the
word custodian is lsquoa person who cares for another person a guardian a
keeperrsquo With this said letrsquos talk
about our countryrsquos greatest asset---its children The first custodians a child
has are the parents The parents are
first in nurturing their childrsquos body
mind and spirit The parents may have to rely on the medical profession-
als to be the custodians for the childrsquos
bodily and mental health To keep nurturing their child parents may seek
certain church affiliations enrollment
in community activities surround the child with a group of children his age
at a reputable daycare or simply one
parent decides to stay home and take
care of this little one who one day will become part of our countryrsquos future
Before long the child is ready for
school where he will spend most of their formative years more time than
they spend at home---scary thought for
some parents Most parents realize that once their young one is ready for
school he is on the way to getting pre-
pared to meet the challenges of whatrsquos
out of their comfort zone and safety net of the home and parentsrdquo
Now the audience was really atten-
tive to the point that no one was get-ting up not even to get more of the
spiced up drinks The speaker contin-
uedhellip
ldquoThe parent holding on tight to their young onersquos sweaty hand has
teary eyes and does a great job of
holding back the river of tears pushing to show themselves Theyrsquore walking
into the SCHOOL For some children
this is the day theyrsquove been waiting for 4 or 5 years of their whole life They
are as excited as when they get to eat
all they want of their favorite ice
cream at a birthday party As soon as they walk into the building the child
says ldquoWmdashOmdashW the floor is so shiny I can see you holding my hand
Even before they get to their assigned
classroom a nurse comes out of his
office and welcomes them both to the school and says ldquoDonrsquot worry about
your childrsquos medical needs Irsquom here
to tend to the needsrdquo The parent takes a quick detour to the cafeteria and no-
tices the clean tables and benches not
to mention the shiny floor Greetings come from the cafeteria workers as
they prepare the dayrsquos mealsmdashthe aro-
ma from the nutritious food is so invit-
ing Not to worry the child will be served wholesome brain food The
parent gets back on the trail to the
childrsquos classroom and notices the school bus arriving with laughing
smiling and even some crying chil-
dren The bus driver makes sure every child is off the bus and takes the cry-
ing children to the school personnel
waiting right outside the bus to escort
them to the cafeteria for breakfast and to their classrooms The parent sees
the crying children comforted and re-
assured with a soft gentle voice ldquoEverything will be okay and yoursquore
going to have a super dayrdquo The par-
ent proceeds to the classroom the
child no longer holding on to his parentrsquos hand ldquo
The speaker accepts a glass of icy
cold water that a member of the audi-ence zooms up to the center stage He
recognizes the member as one of his
working buddies The buddy gives the speaker a lsquothumbs uprsquo The speaker
goes onhellip
ldquoThe parent recognizes the adminis-
trator of the school He is making the early hour school inspection for safety
and hygiene of the building and is
welcoming the parents and students to the start of a new productive and won-
derful school year The librarian and
counselor are ushering the parents to the correct classroom wing Therersquos

greet the child with a warm smile with praises for arriving to school on time
The parent gives the child one last hug
and turns away with tears tears of re-
lief knowing his child is in the best possible learning and socializing envi-
ronmentrdquo
The speaker takes a long drink of the icy cold water and continueshellip
ldquoThe parent exited the classroom
and on the way out the school secre-tary and support staff waved to wish
the parent a wonderful day Once out-
side the school building the coach and his assistants could be seen directing
traffic of vehicles and older children
as they were dropped off at the en-
trance of the school A police officer drove by slowly at the drop off point
to observe that everybody was follow-
ing safety rules The parent drove away anxiously waiting for the hour
to pick up the young child from
school The dinner hour would be full of chatter from the child about the first
day of school that finally came around
after waiting for all their 4 or 5 years

be fossilized in some of our hearts
Everyone has heard the expression lsquoIt
takes a village to raise a childrsquo Irsquod like to add this to the expression It
takes a home neighborhood town
city state country to raise a child to become a productive citizen and be
proud of accomplishments in life
however few or manyrdquo The speaker could see some of the
audience in deep thought as to be ask-
ing themselves ldquoHave I used my posi-
tion in life to be the best custodian in order for our countryrsquos greatest as-
setmdashour children to carve a beautiful
future for all of us one day they will be working and running this state this
country The speaker had just a little
more to sayhellip
ldquoIn any ORGANization everybody

as important as it is cannot function

Prayer to Saint Christopher
Saint of Strength
Grant me O Lord a steady hand and
watchful eye That no one shall be hurt as
I pass by
You gave life I pray no act of mine may
take away or mar that gift of thine
Shelter those dear Lord who bear my
company from the evils of fire and all
calamity
Teach me to use my car for others need
nor miss through love of undue speed
The beauty of the world
That thus I may with joy and courtesy go on my way
St Christopher holy patron of travelers protect me and
lead me safely to my destiny
Amen
Our guardian angel is assigned to protect and
guide us during our life here on Earth They also
come to our aide during stressful times
Angels are willing to communicate with us but
most of the time we are too busy to listen Being attentive to our guardian angel we can receive
subtle messages that will help in our daily lives
You may ask your guardian angel a question but
you must ask out loud and in a clear and concise
voice Do not ask frivolous questions Your an-
swer will always be tangible and explicit
If you were born on a Friday your guardian
angel is St Jhudiel
Prayer to St Jhudiel O merciful Archangel St Jhudiel dispenser of Godrsquos
eternal and abundant mercy Because of our sinful-
ness we do not deserve Godrsquos forgiveness Yet He continually grants us forbearance
freely and lovingly Help us in our determination to overcome our sinful habits and be
truly sorry for them Bring each one of us to true conversion of heart That we may ex-
perience the joy of reconciliation which it brings without which neither we as individ-
uals nor the whole world can know true peace You who continually intercede for us
listen to our prayers Present to God our Father all these petitions through Jesus Christ
our Lord together with the Holy Spirit forever and ever
Amen

Amen
