But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach

you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?

4 Living in peaceThe heat from the past few weeks has been quiet unbearable. Another reason to be grateful that we live in the beautifully treed Irene - providing additional shade against the sun and hopefully cooling our homes down a little.

Thankfully the load shedding seems to have quietened down - a relief for those of us running businesses. Echoing the letter received from Heather Maynier this month, a big THANK YOU to the ILA for keeping us updated on the load shedding schedules. The Facebook page has also been a great help and I have often found myself refering to it when in doubt. If you haven’t already liked the page, please do so: The Village of Irene.

I’ve touched on the subject of communication being paramount to the success of any aspect of life and living in a community such as Irene is no different. It’s wonderful to see that our village magazine, Facebook page, emails and SMSs are being utilised to their full potential. Thanks to all the people in the background who make these tools possible and thanks to the community for your positive feedback. I always enjoy receiving your emails with pictures and interesting facts about the village and all who live in it (including the creepy crawlies!).

Our front cover picture this issue is testimony to the huge privilage we have of living in an area where nature is still comfortably living alongside us.

Of course, our efforts of communication and security would not be possible without the financial support the community gives back by being members of the ILA. If you aren’t already a member, please seriously consider joining as every cent counts towards ensuring our village is kept as safe and secure as possible.

Don’t forget to support the advertisers too. These are local businesses who welcome the support of the community and who are here to ensure we receive great service.

‘Till next month

Tracey

Dear Editor

I just wanted to ask that you publish a very big and heartfelt 'Thank You!" to Alyson and Jan who have spent so much time and effort keeping the ILA membership up to date with emails regarding load shedding schedules and Smart meter processes, and such. It is over and above the ILA call of duty and I find it hugely helpful that this information is sent with accuracy on a regular basis.

With much appreciationHeather Maynier

Farewell Suzanne

Suzanne Holmes has run the ballet in the Village Hall since 1991. After all these years she has decided to call it a day and will be leaving South Africa to join her family in the United States.

Suzanne will be sorely missed in our community. So many children have had lessons from Suzanne and her gentle nature and genuine love for the children will never be forgotten.

Suzanne, all the ballet children and their parents wish you well as you leave our shores. We may not see you again but you will never be forgotten in the Village. Go well Suzanne.

Barbara Tanton Chairman, Irene Association.

7Bust of General Jan Smuts donated to Smuts Museum

At a ‘thank you volunteers’ evening at Smuts House at the end of November, Mrs Maureen Gerber and her son, Harry, donated a larger than life bust of Jan Smuts to the Museum.

The bust has been at the Irene Homes charity shop for many years and the Museum is curious to find out is history. Jimmy Taylor, a former Chairman of the Board of the General Smuts Foundation, was also thanked for ceding all rights to his book ‘A sentimental journey’ about Irene in the 1960s, to the Friends of the General Smuts Foundation.

The evening commenced with a walk around the Arboretum followed by drinks and snacks. A variety of other volunteers were thanked including: An accountant, birders, barman, cabinet maker, cooks and salad makers, an electrician, suppliers of jungle gyms and jumping castle and furniture. Neil Andersen was thanked for his work on restoring the Armstrong Cannon and after saying goodbye to the General Manger, Johan Potgieter, who is moving to the Cape, new members to the Board and Friends committee were introduced.

Lost!

On 2 March 2015 I lost my iPad leaving King Street and exiting through Queen street (it was on the roof of my car so not sure where it would have ended up). It is an iPad 2 without 3G, with a red speck cover. I am hoping a good citizen may have picked it up (I cannot locate it as it is not connected to the internet). If you have picked it up or have any information as to who might have found it please contact Nadia on 061 813 8930.

Pieter Marais, Eminent Natural Scientist and Academic (1953-2015)

Pieter Marais passed away, aged 61, by the side of his loving wife at their family home in Irene on the morning of 29 January 2015.

Devoted husband to Fiona Marais, they were happily married for 39 years, having just celebrated their anniversary in January. Dedicated and loving father to 4 sons and 2 daughters, Michael (sadly estranged), Stephen, Julian, Chrisjan, Robyn and Alexandra. A passionate sport lover he always supported his beloved Blue Bulls and regularly attended the matches, always with his sons by his side. A kind and caring family man, passionate sport lover and dedicated in his career. His achievement in his career would never have happened if not for his family. Everything he did he did for the love of his children and wife. They were his inspiration and he was theirs.

Pieter Marais was born on 15 March 1953 in Standerton. He obtained his matric from the Hoërskool Hoogenhout, Bethalin 1970. After school he was awarded a bursary from the Atomic Energy Corporation to study at the then Pretoria College for Advanced Technical Education where he obtained a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry in 1975. It was at this college that he met his one true love and soul mate, Fiona Marais. The first time he laid eyes on her she was welding and it was love at first sight. In January 1976 they were married and stayed happily married ever after.

In January 1978 he accepted a post as lecturer at Technikon Pretoria where he also continued his studies. This was also the year that they had their first child, Stephen Marais. In 1979 he completed the National Higher Diploma in Chemistry, a Master’s Diploma in Chemistry (Cum Laude) in 1982 and in 1983 he completed the National Higher Diploma in Post School Education. In 1987 he enrolled for and completed a Master’s Degree in Analytical Science at the University of Cape Town. In the mid-nineties he decided to continue his studies and in 1998 received a Doctorate in Chemistry from Technikon Pretoria. During his post graduate studies he was also a recipient of the Technikon Pretoria Vice Chancellor’s Award for exceptional achievement (1992) and the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Senior Fellowship (1996). He was the Head of the Department of Chemistry from 1984 and from January 1994 he was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, a post he occupied until the end of 2003 when Technikon Pretoria became the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) however, he continued to serve as the Dean of Natural Sciences at TUT until his resignation due to ill health in December last year.

Page 10: Town Crier March 15

10During his term of office he championed the cause of the Natural Scientist in South Africa, enabling technicians to be fully recognised as scientists. In 2012 he was the recipient of a special award from the Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara, during a breakfast meeting of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). The SACNASP is the legislated regulatory body for natural science practitioners in South Africa and Prof Marais was first appointed to its council in 1993. Prof Marais’ function in the council was to represent the interests of technologists. From 1993, technologists were allowed to register with the council for the first time ever. Over the years he led the campaign to have Technikon graduates accepted as professional scientists, which was achieved with the revised act in 2003.

Pieter has also served the scientific community with distinction. As a member of the SA Chemical Institute from 1976, he served on the Institute’s Council

from 1990 to 1997. As an enthusiastic analytical chemist he served on the steering committee to establish the Analytical Division and served as Chairperson from 1990 to 1994

In December 2014 he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and hospitalised. During the peri-od of his illness until his death, 59 days later, he wrote a diary of his experiences on Facebook which was followed by all his friends and colleagues, and provided an inspiration on how to cope with a sudden life-threatening disease.

He is survived by his wife Fiona and their children and grandchildren.

Dear Residents and ILA Members

February has been marked by several significant events in our country; most notable at the time of writing this article would be the SONA2015, which has garnered much reaction and comment at every level of society! It came to mind that everything comes down to being a responsible, upright, law abiding citizen who leads by example and in light of this idea, we are calling for our Irene residents and ILA members to lead by example in every area in our com-munity. We thank you upfront for your efforts to date and encourage you to continue to strive to make a difference, no matter how small.

“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Littering

Litter is a scourge in our country that devalues the areas where it is not actively targeted and where residents do not feel that it’s their responsibility to pick up what another has left behind.

Our village has had several initiatives e.g. the subway bridge project, the installation of roadside bins around the Oval and on Pioneer and Stopford Roads, the availability of litter spikes for walkers or sports enthusiasts etc. to assist the public in responsibly disposing of their refuse. This, in addition to the ILA’s on-going drive to appeal to Council to empty the bins, has not solved the problem.

All of these litter focussed initiatives have been taken on by ordinary Irene residents and so, in the knowledge that we have to take a “hands on” approach to our environment, we would appeal to our residents who live near to an overflowing bin or the Irene Primary School Bruce and Clifford Road gate, to assist in the clean up on a regular basis by stepping out with a refuse bag and simply dropping the filled bag on the pavement for collection on a Monday morning. Our property values, the look and feel of our village and the excellent example we would be setting to our young people by engaging on this issue, would be hugely valuable in more ways than one!

Areas of concern are:

Page 13: Town Crier March 15

- Litter around the Irene Primary School gate at the corner of Bruce and Clifford Roads is an eyesore.- The roadside bins on Pioneer, Stopford and the Oval.

Road usage

Please remember that our speed limit in the village is 30km/hr and that this is for the protection of our residents, their children and pets. Speeding is of particular note on Pioneer Road heading toward the library where the many pedestrians are in danger of being hit by a car. This section of road is also hazardous due to vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road to access the hand swipe post at the exit. This behavior is most concerning and we would appeal to our residents to please lead by example in using our roads.

Burning of garden refuse

Please be aware that Centurion, and therefore Irene, is a smoke-free zone and that the burning of refuse of any sort is not permitted. Please lead by ex-ample for our children and staff in this regard.

Illegal dumping

The illegal dumping in our area has become an ever-growing issue that requires community input and action. Those responsible may be residents as well as contractors removing rubbish and rubble on your behalf, who then dump the waste illegally! Please use reputable contractors and consider how much you are being charged. There are real costs involved, fuel and distance travelled to an operational and open dumpsite being the main ones, and anyone who is too cheap is probably dumping illegally.

Should anyone witness a vehicle illegally dumping, we would encourage them to take a picture of the guilty parties, including that of their vehicle and registration if possible. These images can then be emailed to our DA Ward Councilor, Christa Spoelstra at [email protected] along with the date, time and location of the offence. Christa will take necessary action from there. You can also contact the Metro Police directly on (012) 664 4445 or (012) 358 3116 for an immediate spot fine.

Please lead by example by not dumping illegally and by taking action where dumping is witnessed.

Illegal immigrant employment

The employment of illegal immigrants carries a hefty fine of R10 000.00 per

13

Page 14: Town Crier March 15

illegal immigrant. Please be aware that the authorities take this very seriously and that these workers are often in desperate circumstances and are, in many cases taken advantage of due to their illegal status. We, once again, encour-age our residents to insist on the identification of any and all workers that are employed on their property, as a security protocol.

Please lead by example in following the laws of our country.

Security

The statistics and information pertaining to crime in our village has been com-municated in our monthly email to our membership. Please take note of the various incidents and ensure that you are vigilant and aware of the trends in this regard. We thank EBS Security for their on-going vigilance in our village.

Paintball guns

Please be aware that paintball guns can be classified as dangerous weapons and should not be discharged in a built up area. Residents are reminded that to shoot any animal or bird is an offence and carries a fine. This would also apply to a paintball gun.

Please lead by example to your children in caring for our birdlife.

Electric fence shrub clearance

Our perimeter residents are thanked for their efforts to date and are requested to please continue to ensure that trees and shrubs inside their properties do not interfere with the electric fence. We recommend a gap of at least a metre to ensure that the alarms are not needlessly triggered during storms.

Membership

If you are not an ILA member, please give serious consideration to becoming a part of the community that is paying to keep our beautiful village safe. Your Village needs you! If something is holding you back, please tell us - call us for a chat and share your concerns. You may call Jan (Cell: 083 607 6600) at any time or meet privately with our Chairman, Jaco van der Westhuizen. We value your input and any suggestions you may have.

The gardener’s pest or the wildlife lover’s friend?

This is one of those conundrums: do you dislike them with a passion because of the damage they do, or do you like them with a view to natures bigger picture…? I’m sorry I cannot answer that. I do know that the horticulturists are already hissing with venom in their eyes.

I must tell you that in spring, while my Crinum lilies are growing, their beautiful long shiny green leaves almost touching the ground , I find myself staring at them holding thumbs and silently hoping that the dreaded moths do not find them this summer (fat chance, I mumble). The lilies’ flowers are large, pink and a spectacular sight in any garden. Unfortunately the devastation caused by the caterpillars of Brithys crini. (the crinum lilly borer) is equally as spectacular, the magnitude of the destruction leaves you speechless.I find my plants go from being tall, spectacularly healthy, to a limp brown sloppy mess in a couple of weeks. No escape here for our Clivias either, these guys are also responsible for attacking them with the same end result. The only good thing I can say is that my plants do recover, but the frustration... oh man!

Well this season as a Lepidopterist (Butterfly and Moth guy ) I wanted to see what this destructive egg laying machine looked liked, so I decided to breed the caterpillar through to the final phase, the dreaded moth.

Town Crier March 2015

Page 17: Town Crier March 15

Town Crier March 2015

I caught a large caterpillar, photographed it (photo 2), placed it in a jar with about 6 centimetres of soil. Fortunately I struck it lucky this time, the caterpillar went underground to pupate the very next day. Phew! What a relief, no more feeding it.

It hatched successfully 19 days later and to my total surprise it was a

moth I had never seen before, not in my house or around any lights in Irene, ever. (Probably too clever to get attracted to lights.) Finally, I got to see the culprit.

In photo 1 you can see the tunnelling done by the smaller caterpillars as they eat the central layer of the leaf away. Photo 2, the larger caterpillars now eat the leaf from the outside, down the edges, it is about 4 to 5 cm long. Photo 3, shows the end result of the feeding frenzy and photos 4 and 5 show the moth that is responsible for the onslaught.

Dear Town Crier...Below are three photographs of three oak trees in Irene. They were taken at the same time. The trees seem to indicate an underground water course running through Irene.

I have been watching the trees for a number of years. What is interesting is that the three trees are about 50 meters apart but they bear their leaves differently. There is clearly an underground water source passing under the tree in full foliage and seems to pass close to the one starting its summer foliage while the third tree bears its leaves several weeks later and must be shorter of underground water.

Movie reviewsby courtney tink

KingsmenDirector: Matthew Vaughn

Stars: Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine.

Genre: Action, Comedy

Okay, upfront you should probably know that I am a big Colin Firth fan, so any movie with him in it will probably have me as a guaranteed audience member watching it and with a cast like this, acting in a James-Bond style movie, well, how could I stay away? The Kingsmen is one of the first good spy movies to be seen in a long time. It is a mixture of James Bond and a modern King Arthur. The film has a very subtle and well thought out sense of humour about it and the characters are developed beautifully. For example, the villain truly does want to save the world; literally, he is trying to solve a human population problem we appear to have. The film revolves around the Kingsmen, a group of operatives set out to save the world. When one of the operatives is murdered, it is time to replace him with a new individual. Here Colin Firth is able to repay a debt as well as save a young man by giving him a chance to show his potential. Meanwhile a sinister force developing means to cause mass destruction on Earth itself. It is a delightful movie to catch, the plot and its twists are created brilliantly and the graphics are remarkable. The moral one walks away with at the end of the movie is that anyone has the potential to do great, no matter your class, gender, wealth, connections or past.

Fun Fact: The gentlemen spies (Kingsmen) in this movie are considered to be later-day modern-times equivalents of the Knights of the Round Table from the Arthurian legend.

Page 25: Town Crier March 15

25MortdecaiDirector: David Koepp

Stars: Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor

Genre: Action, Comedy

Mortdecai (based on the novel Get that thing out of my face by Kyril Bonfiglioli) was a wonderful film to watch. Its humour was that of British wit and avoided unnecessary crass, slapstick or underdeveloped jokes. The plot revolves around a priceless artwork, thought to be lost to the world, suddenly resurfacing and henceforth being stolen. Mortdecai (an artwork dealer) is thus put on the case in order to find out who has stolen the artwork, why they have done so and more importantly, where it is currently being held. This film will have you laughing from beginning to end, with some clever plot twists and one or two action scenes that are executed brilliantly. This film is the perfect example of the action-comedy genre which can sometimes focus too much on either action or comedy. I predict that Mortdecai will be in theatres for a long time, so why not pop in and see it when you feel like a good laugh?

Fun Fact: Mortdecai’s comments about being an art dealer, accomplished fencer and fair shot with most weapons in his opening voiceover are taken directly from Kyril Bonfiglioli’s book jacket author biography.

Courtney Tink, is 20 years old and a third year BA English Studies student at TUKs. ”I love movies, I feel like there’s a movie for every feeling. My favourite genres are comedy and romance, my least favourite genres are thrillers and horrors. I can sit through almost any movie and I have an embarrassingly large DVD collection as well as the Ster-Kinekor app on my phone. I hope you enjoy my reviews, all of them are based on movies currently showing at Irene Mall (Ster-Kinekor).”
