4Living in peace

Town Crier December/January 2015

The end of year is in sight and things are suddenly coming to a grinding halt. Neighbours are busy packing up for their long awaited holiday and our children are enjoying the freedom that another year of school being over brings.

Although we pride ourselves on our security sucesses, please be aware of what your children are doing whilst you are away at work. We like to believe that walking oround the village is a privalidge that most children in ordinary subburbs don’t get the freedom to do however, your children must still be vigilent in not interacting with strangers and being aware of any potential danger. Should they feel uncomfortable or afraid at any time, make sure they have Dawie’s number on their phone so that they can call for help if needed.

Our village will surely quieten down over the next few weeks so for those of us enjoying a peaceful Christmas at home, please continue to be aware of your surroundings. We all know that criminals don’t take holidays and they certainly will be on the lookout for opportunistic crime whilst we are a little more relaxed than usual.

For those of you travelling, I wish you a safe journey. To all our readers, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Thank you for your continued support of Irene Town Crier and our advertisers - a little magazine that is very close to our hearts.

‘Till next yearTracey

I received a letter addressed to Val Reynolds, but the address is incorrect, nor do I know of her. If Val Reynolds reads the notice in the Town Crier, she can get in contact with an old friend who resides in England, via email: [email protected]. Petra Ackermann

Dear fellow Irene car nuts, Judged by frequent observations in Irene, it seems that there are a number of my fellow Irene residents who share my passion for classic cars. I therefore want to propose an informal get-together at the Oval on Sunday, 25 January at 15h00. More recent dates seem impractical due to the Festive Season. I have it on good authority that there are a number of interesting cars amongst us, for example :

- Jaguar XK 150;- Jaguar Mk2;- Jaguar E type;- 1930’s Rolls-Royce;- More than one Bentley;- Citroen 2DCV;- Alfa Spyder;- MGA;- Austin Healy;- Lotus 7. Let’s see how many of these we can get together. If you are this way inclined and want to meet your neighbourly fellow car nuts, please send me your contact and car details. I would love to get in contact with you and will endeavour to put an Irene classic car register together. Your con-tact details will be utilised in case the weather doesn’t co-operate on the 25th of January. RegardsGustav Raubenheimer071 199 3191 [email protected]

ICC Social and Environmental responsibility celebration day 2014Irene Country Club (ICC) celebrated another successful year of their social responsibility initiative, the ICC tennis development program in its 15th year. The ICC and its affiliates are proud of its many success stories of empowered, confident young children going on to achieving great things through the strength of their tennis, a skill learned through the program.

The event was well attended by the children and their proud parents, program sponsors, ICC members and management and the team of coaches and ad-ministrators who run the program. The children were thrilled sporting big smiles while enjoying a fun tennis workshop run by 6 of the Proactive Tennis coaching team. Prizes were awarded to players for their numerous achievements throughout the year including 3 juniors representing Gauteng North province at the annual Inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein, 6 players winning local tournaments and the school team performing well in the provincial league.

The life blood of the program, its generous sponsors, were thanked during the speech ceremony for their support;

• Denel Dynamics - Official coaching, uniforms and prizes sponsor• Renault Centurion - Official vehicle sponsor• Sportsmans Warehouse - Prize sponsor• Pick ‘n Pay - Food and prize sponsor• Proactive Tennis Group - coaching and administration

This year’s celebration included the launch of the ICC’s new environmental re-sponsibility initiative, phase 1 of its plan toward GOING GREEN.

During their solar energy presentation, the ICC Tennis chairman and Green-house Energy Consulting owner, Craig Herbst, flicked the switch which

Page 9: Town Crier DecJan 15

082 622 9001

introduced the first solar energy feed into its existing power infrastructure: reducing the ICC’s carbon footprint as a first step toward going green. Craig, during the presentation, interactively educated the children about the importance of harnessing solar energy and ensuring a greener future.

The children, parents, coaches, sponsors, ICC management and VIP’s signed their mark on the artificial pine tree board signifying their support for a greener ICC.

A 12 panel solar plant sporting a small 3KW solar PV system was installed on the roof of the ICC, which was sponsored by a number of leading companies in the solar industry;

• Avelar energy SA have sponsored the solar panels and have managed the project; • Greenhouse energy consulting sponsored the installation; • ABB has sponsored the inverter; and • Schletter has sponsored the mounting system!

Thank you to all and the ICC looks forward to a bright and successful 2015!

10The Irene Library staff would like to

extend their sincere congratulations to Bridget Martin for emerging as the 2014 Irene Library’s junior reader of the year. Bridget has been, and still is, a frequent reader

of the Irene Library Junior fiction books. According to the library’s yearly statistics, Bridgette has had an aver-age of 12 books issued to her name

weekly since the begging of this year. That means the young Bridgette has

been able to read over 500 books in the year 2014 alone. In the pres-ence of her parents, Bridgette was

presented with an award for being the 2014 reader of the year. The award aims at motivating and encouraging

young readers to take reading serious as it forms part of everyday learning.

The library staff are looking forward to awarding another young reader of the

year in 2015. Congratulations Bridgette.

Congratulations

Dear Irene communityThe Irene Library staff would like to inform you that the library will remain open until the 24th December 2014. Customers are advised to come to the library

Dear Residents and ILA Members

2014 is almost a thing of the past and we would like to take a moment to reflect before we enjoy the festive season and to leave you with some things to think about for 2015.

As always, the primary focus and priority of the Irene Landowners Association has been the safety and security of the village and its residents. How do we really know how effective our security measures have been? There is no way to tell what would have happened had we done things differently or not all. We believe we’ve had a measure of success. Overall, the crime rate is still significantly lower than in prior years and much lower than the greater Centurion area. Unfortunately though, we did have two incidents where residents came into face to face contact with criminals. These incidents hit close to home, they steal our peace and are a jolt which brings us back to the reality of living in South Africa. There have also been incidents recently where members of the greater Irene community, specifically mountain bikers, have been ruthlessly targeted by violent criminals. The village has also suffered numerous power outages during the year due to cable theft. There is no respite, the criminals are relentless and they are testing us all the time. Any weakness will be exploited. The only response we have is COMMUNITY! It is not all doom and gloom but we stand and fall together. Our pooled resources and commitment to securing our village is paramount!

With this in mind, we would ask you to give some serious thought to how you can make a difference in Irene. Some ideas we’ve come up with as challenges for 2015, are elaborated on below. Not all are security related but emphasises what community is all about.

1) Get to know your neighbours! Yes, all of them! Some of them are weird! So what! They think you’re weird too! Get their numbers on your phone and look out for one another. While you’re at it, ask them how they live with themselves - freeloading off their neighbours as they do, by not joining the ILA. There are 638 residential properties in Irene and Ext 2 of which 473 are members, the other 165 are your neighbours, we need them onboard and contributing and you need to help.

Page 13: Town Crier DecJan 15

2) Stop annoying your fellow residents and putting their lives at risk! The two biggest complaints we get, almost daily, are about people speeding and not cleaning up after their animals on the Oval. We know there are people from outside contributing on both fronts but that is no excuse for us to do the same. Seriously folks, speeding is dangerous and dog poo is a health hazard, especially for our children.

3) Take your security seriously! Test your alarm regularly, set your alarm religiously, be aware of what is going on around you and don’t hesitate to call EBS on 012 667 6337, if you have even the slightest concern. Also take alarm activations seriously, don’t take the security for granted - false alarms have consequences from a time and cost point of view that could be better spent. 4) Get involved in your community! Strong communities are built on residents supporting local charities, businesses and events. And it’s fun! The Irene Garden Club isn’t just for older ladies, all are welcome and anyone can enjoy a glass of wine - Rotary would appreciate your support at the wine club. There are other opportunities too, so please get involved.

5) Join the CPF! We can all play an active role in our safety. You are no different from the guards who patrol the streets - two eyes and a cell phone are all you need.

Thanks!

The directors would like to thank everyone who contributed to the ILA and those who volunteered their time in 2014. An especially huge thank you to EBS. Dawie and his guarding compliment have done a sterling job this year and we appreciate their commitment. They will be doing their utmost to keep the village crime free over the festive season. As always Alyson and Jan have kept it all running smoothly and Veronica has made sure we collect the money and pay the bills – thank you!

Lastly, we would wish you all a fantastic festive season. Have a blessed Christmas, enjoy the special time with family and friends and make the most of the holiday before it all kicks off again next year. Please take care on the roads if you are travelling, we want everyone back safely.

Kind regardsILA Directors

17Dear Town Crier...Malcolm and Wendy Fawkes were as pleased as punch when their first grandchild, Liane` Dickason, arrived safely on 22 September. It had been a long seven year battle for the proud parents, Lauren and Graham. However, all finally went well and the little family is now thriving. The moral of the story is that there is help out there for those battling to start a family - don’t give up!

Leapfrog was at the recent Moonlight Fun Run/Walk where lots of fun was had by all...

Movie reviewsby courtney tink

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesDirector: Johnathan LiebsmanStarring: Megan Fox, Will Arnet and Johnny KnoxvilleGenre: Action, Comedy

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a dream come true for anyone who watched their cartoons back in the day. Yes, their life-like characters are slightly more reptilian than the 2D cartoons made them out to be, but it was a fantastic movie. Even Megan Fox’s acting has appeared to improve! I found it the right amount of fun and action. The plot is a usual “hero-saves the day” theme, however there are some plot twists and some creative backstories along the way. It’s quality as an action film on it’s own, without any history behind it, is slightly over-used, and I blame Marvel for that, hence I wouldn’t recommend it if you haven’t the slightest clue as to whom the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are, nor do you enjoy reptilian do-gooders who live in the sewers of New York and have a weakness for cheesey pizza’s. On a serious note; it was a very successful film with regards to living up to the legacy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was impressed with the graphics as well as how the writers have created individual character traits that create unique identities for the turtles.

Fun Fact: The film was released on the 30th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle saga.

The Maze RunnerDirector: Wes BallStarring: Dylan O’ Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Will PoulterGenre: Adventure, Action

This film revolves around a boy called Thomas who is sent to this maze-like arena called “The Glade”, where he is met by a group of boys who have been living in the glade for years without any notable route for escape. However all routines are destroyed once a girl arrives. This change of the norm could mean the end or escape. It involves multiple monsters that might give you the heebie-jeebies and many, many, MANY plot twists that still leave me saying “huh?”. It is a very engaging and clever film, the characters are superb and the level of acting itself was very impressive. I found the film to be dynamic and nicely-paced. However my only criticism is that it clearly needs a sequel, in order to answer a lot of questions the first film leaves you with. I believe it will be very successful and I see the actor Dylan O’ Brien achieving great accolades with this film.

Fun Fact: Dylan O’ Brien’s hairstyle almost cost him the role of Thomas because Wes Ball thought it was too “MTV”, however he later on reconsidered this when he saw a photograph of O’ Brien without hair gel in his hair.

Page 25: Town Crier DecJan 15

25Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, very bad day.Director: Miguel AretaStarring: Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner and Ed Oxenbould.Genre: Family, Comedy

This was a very cute film; it all revolves around Alexander and the fact that he has terrible luck. However at midnight on the eve of his birthday, Alexander makes a wish that his family has a terrible day like he has every single day, and would you believe it? His wish comes true…of course it comes true on a day where each family member has incredibly life-altering important things to do that day. There are some moments where you have to ask yourself “how can it possibly get better from here?” but, true family-film style; it has a nice, sweet happy-ending. It is ideal for the whole family and is a nice feel good movie about fate and luck. The cast is wonderful, and is what initially attracted me to the film itself. Will it win an Oscar or change the world with its powerful words? Probably not, but it really is a feel good movie that will have you leaving with a smile…probably because you are thanking your lucky stars that you have never had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day like this family has.

Fun Fact: In the movie Alexander is obsessed with Australia. In real-life the actor who plays Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) is from Australia.

Courtney Tink, is 19 years old and a second year BA English Studies student at TUKs. ”I love movies, I feel like there’s a movie for every feeling. My favourite genres are comedy and romance, my least favourite genres are thrillers and horrors. I can sit through almost any movie and I have an embarrassingly large DVD collection as well as the Ster-Kinekor app on my phone. I hope you enjoy my reviews, all of them are based on movies currently showing at Irene Mall (Ster-Kinekor).”
