Castles, ancient villages, hills in the wake of TV series Game of

Thrones, the Middle Ages are one of the most popular

leisure themes

Long live theknights of theMiddle Ages

no surprise that the series also has the un-

enviable record of having the most copiesillegally downloaded from the Internet.

Dealing with struggles between noble

families, complete with magic and being

set in Medieval times, the series is natu-

rally lmed in Europe, in particular in

Croatia, Ireland and Iceland. Dubrovnik

in Croatia, with its medieval wall, narrow

streets and fortications dating back to

the 12th century is the setting for the bat-

tles of Daenerys Targaryen (Dany), one

of the heroines of the series, as well asbackdrop for Kings Landing and Black-

water Bay, the areas inhabited by some of

the noble families contending the throne.

The hills of Northern Ireland on the

other hand are the scene of the battles

The rst embryonic amuse-

ment parks can be traced backto the Middle Ages, when in

Europe jugglers, acrobats, balladeers,

knights and archers were invited to en-

tertain the court or to compete in public

tournaments. The link between Middle

Ages and entertainment is still here today,

only now the roles have been reversed: it

is everyday life from Medieval times that

is the subject of very popular events.

Increasing interest in this historical

era is Game of Thrones, the televisionseries produced and broadcast by pay

TV network HBO, and one of the most

successful fantasy series ever produced.

Now in its fourth season, the series was

an immediate hit worldwide in Italy,

for example, it is broadcast by Sky, and

the third series in 2013 attracted an aver-

age of more than 380,000 viewers every

episode often described with superla-

tives, as are the size of the settings, the

locations and the number of actors. It is

I primi embrionali parchi di divertimen-ti possono essere fatti risalire allepocamedievale quando in Europa giocolieri,acrobati, cantori, cavalieri e arcieri veni-vano invitati per intrattenere le corti o ga-reggiare di fronte al popolo. Il legame traMedioevo ed entertainment persiste ancoroggi, solo che ora i ruoli si sono invertiti: la vita quotidiana del Medioevo a es-sere il soggetto di eventi molto popolari.

tatori hanno accesso a pi di cento pezzioriginali dalla serie tra cui costumi, armi earmature, modellini di draghi ed elementidel set. inoltre presente una replica delTrono di Ferro dinanzi al quale la gente fala la per potersi sedere e farsi immortalarecon una foto. Il tutto integrato con oggettiregalo con il logo Game of Thronesven-duti nel negozio HBO.

Il successo del tema medievale nonrimane isolato alle location di Game ofThrones e a HBO. Sulla scia del rinnova-to interesse infatti molte localit, in Europa

ma non solo, stanno aprendo o rilanciandodei propri festival medievali.

Il Ministero del Turismo rumeno adesempio ha scelto proprio due eventi legatial Medioevo come parte della campagnapubblicitaria del 2014 per promuovere laRomania come meta turistica. I due eventisono Days of the Medieval City, giunto allasesta edizione e Apulum Roman Festival(prima edizione nel 2013) presso la citt diAlba Iulia, in Transilvania, dove esiste tralaltro una fortezza bastionata di tipo Vau-ban tra le meglio conservate dEuropa. Inentrambi i casi si hanno spettacoli tipo lotta

greco-romana, giochi di guerra, danze me-dievali, danze delle ninfe nonch seminarie laboratori di gastronomia, lavorazione del

sons, as well as the events surrounding

the Stark dynasty, the Iron Islands and the

fortress on Dragonstone seas, all ctitious

elements but set along the storm battered

coastline near the village of Strangford,in County Down, dominated by the goth-

ic style Castle Ward. No surprise too that

the scenes featuring walls of ice, rocks

and snow were lmed in Iceland, in par-

ticular around Lake Myvatn in the north

of the country.

As often occurs in these circum-

stances, hit television shows also lead

to different spin offs. In this case, the

Game of Thrones

: The Exhibition isan interactive attraction that has been

travelling the world since 2013 (stop-

ping off, for example, in New York,

Oslo, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Belfast

and Amsterdam) and whose visitors can

see more than 100 original items from

the series, including costumes, weapons

and armour, models of dragons and props

from the sets. There is also a replica Iron

Throne, where people can queue up to sit

on and have their photo taken. All com-

plete with gift items featuring the Game

of Throneslogo, sold at the HBO shop.

The success of the Medieval theme

is not however limited to the locations of

Game of Thrones and HBO. In the wake

of this renewed interest, many places, and

not only in Europe, are opening or rejuve-

nating their own Medieval festivals.

Romanias Ministry of Tourism, for

example, has chosen 2 Medieval style

events as part of its 2014 advertising

campaign to promote Romania as a tour-ist destination. The events are Days of

the Medieval City, being held for the

sixth time, and Apulum Roman Festival

(rst held in 2013) in the city of Alba Iu-

lia, in Transylvania, where among other

things there is one of the best preserved

Vauban style fortresses in Europe. In both

cases, there are Greco-Roman wrestling

Middle Ages, including in the eld of

hairstyling etc. The formula can be ex-

ported to any country in any sized spaces.

In Australia, the My Lords and La-dies Medieval Fayre of Blacktown in

New South Wales is a 2-day Medieval

themed event held in May, part of a series

of events that attracts more than 150,000

visitors to the area. Kings and Queens,

Lords and ladies are invited to get into

the Game of Thrones spirit and take part

in the events. The centrepiece is an inter-

national jousting tournament at which

theme park culture. The Medieval theme

is often the subject of events that last sev-

participants, who sport stylish and time-

accurate attire, bring former feudal

fashions back to life and provide locals

and tourists with the unique opportunity to

don thier own fancy dresses as members of

feudal nobility.

and dishes based on Medieval recipes.

Craftsmen from all over the United Statesalso come to show off their wares in a

special area.

On the same line is the Georgia Re-

naissance Festival, held in Fairburn, near

Atlanta. It lasts 8 weeks, from the end of

April to the end of May, and is inspired

by the English Middle Ages. In 2015 it

will celebrate its tenth anniversary and is

expected to attract record numbers, more

than 250,000 visitors.

In Italy, Tuscany, with events in Flor-ence, Siena and Arezzo in particular

is perhaps the region with the highest

number of Medieval festivals, featuring

elements such as ag throwing, street

acrobats, balladeers, and tournaments

like the famous Palio in Siena. There

are also new initiatives in other regions

of the country, with tourism start ups

inspired by the success of Game of

Thrones. Our tours stop off in Medi-

eval locations that include ancient vil-lages, such as Novi Velia, Serramezzana,

Castellabate, or even older places such

as Paestum, commented Nicola Guari-

unexpected boom in participants, with

one specic problem: in the age of Uber

where people can at a simple click order

a taxi ride in every corner of the world,

the organisers had to go to enormous

lengths to nd enough donkeys to satisfy

the sudden requests by people arriving in

costume to take part in the tournaments

or simply ride this Medieval means of
