To start, a record-breaking number- 209 entrants -took part in the club’s first Winter Series race on a not-so-wintry Sunday January 7 morning. The whopping start set the tone for a best ever Winter Series and a 5-week average of 170 runners despite follow-up race temperatures in the 20s and ice that moved the race from the scenic bike trail to the park road in the final two weeks. Individual competitors & volunteers are shown inside this edition of THE LONG RUN newsletter and / or on the Website (www.farcnj.com ). Best times of the Series this year included fine performances, as follows: Top Male 5K finish: Manalapan’s Dan Newman 16:35 Top Female 5K finish: FARC’s Allyson Moskal 19:01 Top Male 5K Race-walk: FARC’s Ron Salvio 28:07 Top Female 5K Race-walk: FARC’s Panse Geer31:51 Near the end of the Winter Series, the FARC banquet was organized by Pam Spadola and Linda Hyer and their committee & every detail was marvelously planned & thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended the event in Belmar. The bash involved lots of partying by the 70 or more runners and walkers from the club and guests. Party-goers ranged in age from about 13 to the 93-year old (going on 39!) race walker (& expert dancer), Harry Drazin, certainly an inspiration to all! Dear Freehold Area Running Club, Last Sunday, we had the pleasure of running in your first Winter Series 5-K of 2007. We, along with several families who have kids in our Bears Youth Running Program, drove almost two hours from Stillwater, NJ to race. The organization, course, and atmosphere made the ride completely worth it, and something we'll certainly do again. We wanted to compliment the Freehold Area Running Club on a fabulous job! Again, super job with the race and our hats off to all involved in making the series happen! Laurie & Guy Gordon Stillwater, NJ Please let us hear what you have to say about us and we will promptly respond to any questions or issues so that we may do our best to improve your experience in the community. Please send all correspondence to the FARC webmaster Jim Bergum at www.farcnj.com or [email protected]. Thank you in advance! Now back to our letters, this time regarding the Banquet:

Dear Isabel, Past FARC Presidents and Board Members, I would like to sincerely thank all of you for the honor that you bestowed upon me on Saturday evening. Being added to the Foyer of Fame alongside the esteemed group that is on the plaque is a great honor. I don't think I need to tell you how much the Club means to me and especially all of you folks. Over the past approximately 19 years of my membership with the Club, you have been more like family than teammates or friends. Kathleen and I had a wonderful time. The music, food, and fun were exceptional; Pam, Linda, and your committee did a great job as usual. I could not have done any of what I have done for the Club without the support and understanding of Kathleen and Danielle in giving up much of my family time. Please know that you have that continued support for anything that I can do for the Club and hopefully that will be at least another 19-plus years. I didn’t have all of the e-mail addresses of the past presidents and Board handy so please pass my sincere thanks along. Best Regards, Dave Friedman ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear FARC,

I want to thank you for the enjoyable evening I had at the club's Holiday/Awards Dinner, Saturday night. Kudos to all involved in making the event happen - what a great affair!

Food, awards, music, décor, auction baskets, dedicated officers, wonderful FARC members and ninety-three year-old race-walking legend Harry "Dancing Machine" Drazin hitting the dance floor - the evening had it all. I'm gonna have a good time making use of the "Winter Fun" basket I picked up through the silent auction - especially with the snowman kit.

I especially want to let you know what an honor it was to present the RRCA National Volunteer Awards in recognition of two very dedicated and deserving FARC members - Mr. John Weitz and (the late, great) Mr. Don Spadola.

It's so great to see FARC still going strong - still serving the running community as well as their own members - and still having fun at it, after all these years!

Thanks again, Dave DeMonico Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), New Jersey Representative

Runner’s Forum MARINE CORPS MARATHON By Cindy Monica Hi there! I am happy to report the following results for the Marine Corps Marathon on 10/29/06: The weather was just about perfect - 45 degrees and sunny with a little wind. There were over 34,000 runners. I ran with my niece, Casey. She went ahead of me after a couple of miles and finished in 4:13. My time was 4:56:33, which sounds pretty slow, but it was 6 minutes faster than the last marathon I ran in 2000. I was 20th place of 62 females in my age group. I felt good just being able to go up that last steep hill to the finish line! It was so great to have Michael help me get to the starting line and find him waiting for me at the end of the race. There were so many people cheering and playing music all along the course. I did a fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association in memory of my mom, who just passed away a few weeks ago. If anyone wants to donate, please let me know, and I'll send you the information. All the long training runs at the Reservoir really helped, especially the 20-mile run I was able to do on 10/15/06. Thanks to my running friends Sue, Jose, Linda, and all of you who encouraged me. You were fantastic! FARC XC TEAM By Walt Rutsky

Week 5 The day started out rainy, chilly and windy. Just as predicted. This was the way XC race 5 at Thompson Park opened up. These conditions made the long walk from the race parking seem even longer. Most were huddled under a tarp trying to stay warm and dry. Where was Noah, the arc builder, today? Every once in a while, someone would jog out from under the makeshift shelter to loosen up. The weather surely kept some home today. This was the smallest field so far this season, 73. And the master's

race at Holmdel Park tomorrow may have helped shrink the field. I guess any had valid reasons four staying home today. But this was the Halloween race, the race for the pies and packages of Delicious Orchards cookies for the age-group winners. There was a silver lining though. As the race was ready to start, the rain subsided. And the winds started to die down. Without the gusty winds, the temp was actually in the high 50's. These weather changes held up throughout the race. Of course the course was very sloppy. The race was scored by place and not times today. It did not matter too much for FARC though. We did not score as a team. There were only 3 of us and we did not have an official team. But two-thirds of the team did win age group pies. Congrats to John Taylor (50-59) and Prezemek Nowicki (60-69). At the end of the race, there were doughnuts and apple cider for all. It wasn’t a bad day after all. 1 WAY TO SPEND A SNOWY WINTER DAY By Maggie Freeman A few weeks ago, the week of Valentine's Day, we had our worst storm of this winter season. I unfortunately was home sick with bronchitis for the entire week. I spent the snowy day(s) spending tons of money on internet shopping (I did get some really cute things though:)) One of our newer members to the club, Rich Edwards, had another way to spend such a snowy day. Rich, for those of you who attended our annual awards banquet, was the John Travolta of the evening!:) I spoke to Rich on the phone and asked him how he was going to spend his wintry day. Rich was ecstatic with his answer of "I'm getting a tattoo!" I inquired if the shop would be open in such bad weather, and Rich assured me that they would. I asked that he keep me posted on how the tattoo quest went. Well, for the next few hours, I received a delightful play by play via text message on how the tattoo mission went down. Apparently getting a tattoo on a snowy day is becoming quite a popular item. Rich relayed that as he arrived at the tattoo shop, there was already a wait! Two ladies were already ahead of him getting some treasured ink; way to go ladies!:) Next up: Rich. Rich had some nice artwork added to some existing tattoos, care of a Valentines Day gift certificate from his lovely wife Betty. I was so jealous that I could not have been there to capture the Kodak moment, but Rich sent me the next best thing: pictures of the completed tattoos via e-mail. The tattoos came out looking great but all who know Rich, know his next tattoo needs to be an UnderArmour logo! Hope you all had some fun during the wintry days! I know Rich did! (-Editor’s Note: Now, in its usual competitive spirit, FARC may just have to start a contest to select a design for the official FARC Tattoo. Mine will have to be able to wash off in the shower, as I’m a wimp in that regard!)

11/24/2006 BORN TO RUN Results By Bob Hyer Some 22 years ago Hank Bailey developed an idea to put on a race in Freehold Borough. His plan came together, when over 150 runners stepped up to the starting line on Main Street for the inaugural Born To Run 5-Mile Race. The date was October 5, 1985. Race finishers then enjoyed complimentary post race refreshments one block over at the Court Jester. Fast-forward through the years since then. Yes, there has been a Born To Run 5-Miler every year. It only started on Main Street that first year. After that, a hillier course was designed down through Lake Topanemus Park. The race date was moved to the day after Thanksgiving in 1990, and with that, participation soared. Through the years, there were several different courses, but the park, or rather 'The Lake', was always a key feature. For 21 years Hank Bailey managed this successful event. Then, this past fall, Hank announced he was stepping down and I inherited the reins. Many years ago I ran a race wearing a pair of Hank's shorts, to which he said 'my shorts never ran so fast'. Well, now I've had to step into Hank's shoes, and they are big shoes to fill indeed. As for logistics, another course version was designed, this one looping in and out of the park at Pond Road. And of course, with the club’s help and some good weather, the 22nd annual Born To Run came off without a hitch. A group of five runners cruised by the mile in 5:10, at which point Tim Mulligan surged to the lead. He eventually won going away, in a time of 25:20. Brothers Tim and Ed Callanan took the place and show positions in an identical time of 27:18. Fourth place went to former multi-time BTR winner Dave DeMonico in 27:45, with former Freehold HS runner star Eric Egenolf 5th in 27:55. The women’s winner was Michelle Lilenthal, who took an outstanding 6th place overall (including the men), to win in 27:59. That, very possibly, is a women's course record. She was followed by Sue Huelsten (29:53) and Amy Nalven (31:14). Award-winning club finishers included: Allison Moskal (32:48, 1st 15-19), Erica Weitz (34:01, 3rd 15-19), Liz Spector (37:47, 2nd 30-39), Gabby Barrett (33:54, 2nd 40-49), Cindy Monica (1st 60-69), Andrew Berkowtiz (32:46, 2nd 14 & Under), Ken Vercammen (31:21, 3rd 40-49), John Taylor (31:18, 2nd 50-59), Scott Linnell (32:18, 3rd 50-59), Bill Hagman (32:59, 1st 60-69), David Gross (37:08, 2nd 60-69), Ralph Garfield (38:10, 1st 70-79), Ed Adamsky (2nd Race-Walker) and Elliott Denman (3rd Race-Walker). A very special thanks to the Court Jester for once again providing post race refreshments. A thank you also goes to the Reynolds Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and of course the 40 club member volunteers. And big applause to the race committee, without whom

this event would not be possible. Thank you so very much Isabel Keeley, Tom Wendel, Mike & Cathy O'Flaherty, the late (God Bless You Sir) Don Spadola, John Weitz, Linda Hyer, Ron Salvio, Walt Rutsky, Marcia & Avram (you know who they are), and I'm sure I forgot someone (so shoot me now). And last but not least, thank you Henry Bailey for making this event what it is. The race had 597 entrants. And mark your calendar, November 23, 2007, 11AM, for the 23rd annual Born To Run.

Start of Born to Run Race 12/10/2006 TOYS FOR TOTS Results By Michael O’Flaherty Our 18th TOYS FOR TOTS was very successful. We had 227 finishers this year, which is about 40 more than last year. We collected approximately 340 toys, ranging from coloring books to a bicycle that was donated by Isabel's significant other, and he doesn't even run. (Nice job Bill!) We had times ranging from 16:41 to 45:24. Our fastest male was Michael O'Flaherty from Freehold at 16:41, followed closely by Bob Bythell of Hazlet with a 16:59. Our female race was also very close this year with Erica Weitz edging out Gabby Barrett by only two seconds 19:42 to 19:44. We also had a nice field of race walkers. Our male winner was Manny Eisner with a 32:47 and our women's winner was Fran Emanual with a 33:18. Congrats to ALL our participants, you are all winners just by being on the course. The children you helped to have a nice Christmas really appreciate it! I would also take time to thank all of our volunteers because without them the race could not go on. Also, the race sponsor was the Telcordia Pioneers Chapter 99. Thank you Telcordia Pioneers for all of your support. In closing I would like to thank everyone involved and hope to see you next year.

FARC awards this year’s Matthew John Stuper Memorial Scholarship in May The club remains committed to helping support our young runners as they make the transition from high school to college. Thus, the 9th year of our Matthew John Stuper Memorial Scholarship fund will distribute awards to deserving high school seniors heading to College. The Scholarship Application Form may be found on the website, or call the hotline with your questions. Applications for this year’s awards for graduating seniors heading off to college are due March 31, 2007, so please submit yours now or encourage your high school senior to do so.

Have you renewed your FARC Membership? Please use application in back of this issue or go on-line to

to continue your great discounts, receiving information about coming FARC & community events & future

issues of The LONG RUN. The club’s plan is to issue a membership card,

with a member number, to be used in obtaining club discounts.

Please let FARC know what interesting activities you do, Send to our webmaster at www.farcnj.com Congratulations and Good Luck to Accomplished Club and FARC Board Member, Artist Joel Stern, who had one of his fine art works accepted into the Juried Monmouth Festival of the Arts at Long Branch on Saturday March 24, 2007. The subject work to be shown is Joel’s color painting below. Joel has been to Italy, but not to the area show; however, Joel and Bev’s son gave them the photograph that he Joel used as reference material for the scene expressed here.

Congratulations also and Good Luck to Accomplished Clubg and FARC Board Member, Artist Avram Shapiro, who also had one of his fine art works accepted into the Juried Monmouth Festival of the Arts at Long Branch on Saturday March 24, 2007. The subject work to be shown is Avram’s color painting below. The scene is from Ein Gedi, near the Dead Sea. One of Avram and Marcia Shapiro’s friends had been there years ago and taken a black & white photo. Avram used it as the basis and supplied colors that he thought would be appropriate to the area. Avram showed it to his friend and he was surprised at the accuracy, particularly since Avram had never been there. Amazing!

For the opportunity to view these and other art works’ true color (as these B & W reproductions do not do them justice) & maybe even acquire some really phenomenal works of art from among these and hundreds of others from around the region, please attend this Festival of the Arts. For more information, please contact the hot-line (732-431-2627), or our members Joel (732-462-9640) or Avram (732-431-1039). We are proud to wish these & other multi-talented members the best in all their artistic & other endeavors! Go Avram and Joel !

All your activities and interests

are fit for FARC to print!

The Year in Review

2006

Let me start at the very beginning as the song goes. It has been a wonderful two years as your president. I have reviewed our newsletters to write this year in review. As you well know with time moving so fast we forget what we have been doing. FARC keeps rolling along because we have wonderful members and volunteers all of which I consider good friends. So let me first say thank you to a wonderful board who has been so supportive and productive working hard for the club. The volunteers who make it all happen for FARC are Marcia & Avram Shapiro, Tom Wendel, Bob & Linda Hyer, Pam Spadola, Jim Bergum, Nathan Bergum, Janet Bergum, Hal Smith, Walt & Kathy Rutsky, Art Rosen, Mike & Kathy O'Flaherty, John Weitz and Dave Friedman, Joel & Bev Stern, Stan Dubroff, and Chris & Tabatha Davis. This brief listing does not in any way do justice to all of their efforts. And to be sure, there are many others not listed as well. Thank you all. As 2006 came to a close we had our Annual Holiday Party/Club meeting and the changing of the FARC guard. Art and Isabel stepped down and John Weitz, Maggie Freeman, Chris Davis were elected as new officers for the club. Jim Bergum stayed on as the club secretary and webmaster extraordinaire. A new addition to our Board is Ron Salvio who brings a wealth of running and race management experience to the club. We began 2006 with our 22 Annual Winter Series that is growing each year. Mother Nature played her wicked tricks and we had to cancel two weeks of the series but even with that we had a record 186 finishers the last week of the series. In addition to a flat 5K course, the runners get the FARC brunch including soup, bagels, donuts, and coffee as well as the friendship of the FARC family for only $3 and $5. What a deal! Special thanks goes out to Manhattan Bagel, Dunkin Donuts and the Freehold Township Parks and Recreation Department. In February we had our annual awards banquet that is the best part of the year since we can get all dressed up and socialize (there just seems never to be enough time at the races!). The awards for 2005 went to the following very deserving FARC family members; Ed Robbins Memorial Award - Janet Bergum (Service Award), Don Deneck Memorial Award went to Linda O’Brien (Love of Running), Male Runner of the Year -Chris Davis, Female Runner of the Year - Pam Spadola, Master's Male Runner - John Donoghue, Master’s Female Runner - Gabby Barrett, Race-walker of the Year - Fran Emanuel, Race-walker of the Year - Ted Freeman, Scholastics Runners of the Year - Cody O'Flaherty, Erica Weitz, Presidents Award - Liz Spector, Excellence Award - Manhattan Bagel-Freehold, Foyer of Distinction - Jim Bergum. Our spring racing season is always kicked off with the E. Murray Todd Half Marathon. We look forward to this race, as we know that spring can’t be far behind. Then March brings our St Paddy’s 10 Miler and Leprechaun

5K. Tom Wendel and the Race Committee did an outstanding job of increasing the number of runners. We had a great spring day with lots of FARC hospitality and 914 finishers. The races again benefited the Freehold Recreation Special Education Program, PBA Special Olympics, Freehold Recreation Kuhnart Scholarship, and our own scholarship fund. Special thanks go to our sponsors Nestle, Windmill and the Court Jester. Rachel Provost was our first FARC member finisher with a 1:05 for the 10 mile. She was 15 and took first place in the 15 -19 age group. Bill Aromando was our first FARC male finisher with a 1:08 finish time coming in sixth in his age group. Spring brings the planning for our Summer Series and this was our 24th year. We had a record turn out for our Kids Summer Nights celebrating its 12th year. We were averaging 100 kids each week. It’s so heartwarming to see the kids run the 100 meter Battleground Charge (Only kids love to run up hill!). They are so inspiring! A special thank you to Pauline’s Health Food Store that has sponsored the kids races for the past 10 years. Also, a special thank you to our volunteers. We had 25 stalwarts who came out each week to put on these races at the Monmouth Battleground Park in Manalapan. The club was growing and our garages were over flowing Tom and Isabel did not have room for all of the supplies and equipment. To the rescue was Board Member Stan Dubroff who contacted Stor All USA in Freehold on Route 9 and he worked his magic and contract management skills. Stor All has become a sponsor to the club donating a storage unit for all equipment and supplies. Thank you Stan. Mike O'Flaherty, our Track & Field coach, brought home the accolades during the summer. Our women’s 4X800 team of Janis Ticky, Carolyn Anastasio, Gabby Barrett and Pam Spadola won the USATF-New Jersey State Championship. Our youth was not to be left behind with Cody O'Flaherty won the open 1500 meters. Putting on track shoes after many years was Bob Hyer who won the 5000 Meters. They all brought home the gold for FARC. Congratulations Team FARC. The summer also saw FARC and the FARC-ware mavens Bev and Joel Stern sell at the Belmar 5 Miler and John and Erica Weitz sell at the Asbury Park 5K. This is a great way to advertise and promote our club. Great Job! Thanks. We started out the fall with the Richard Travia 5k at new location -Turkey Swamp Park; this race was to bring awareness to Spinal Cord injury. Richard is local Freehold resident who suffered a surfing accident. The club assisted with the race and raised $10,000 for the Mid Atlantic Spinal Cord Injury Association. It always amazes me how generous our club members are and how they support the club and all of its activities. September brought the FARC Family Picnic. A special thanks to Kathy O’Flaherty who made all the wonderful salads for the picnic. Also to Janet Bergum for the wonderful baked beans (and Jim the liquids were awesome). We also had great deserts. What would a FARC get together be like if we did not have the sweets?

Linda O’Brian was a repeat winner with her awesome Apple Pie. Thanks go out to our BBQ chiefs of Tom Wendel and Bill Meldrum - great cooking guys. We had a busy fall season starting with the second year of our X-Country team. It makes me very proud to see the excitement and support of our X-County team when they get together. It is all about running! The team of Scott Linnell, John Taylor, Pam Spadola, Antoinette Picascia, Joe Saffer, Dave Picascia, Bob Hyer, Jim Bergum, Walt Rutsky, Bill Aromando, Julie Hadaszy, Liz Spector, Przemek Nowicki, Chris Davis, Cody O'Flaherty, Mike O'Flaherty, Patti Conttell and Cathy Locklear. If I missed someone, my apologies. I know that some liquid refreshment was flowing at the end of the series in celebration. Way to go FARC!

This year the Born to Run had a new race director with Bob Hyer coming to the rescue and taking over the helm. We want to give our best wishes and thanks to Hank Bailey who was the race director for many years. We had another great race with 556 finishers on a beautiful fall day. Again the FARC family of volunteers came together to put on a great race. One of the nice things about his race is seeing all the kids and their family members back home for Thanksgiving. We gave out the traditional Born to Run sweatshirt. Thanks to everyone who made it happen. The FARC family also had its sadness this year, with the passing of one of your most enthusiastic and trusted volunteers, Don Spadola, who went home to the Lord in November. Don always said yes when asked to help. He was always asking what he could do to help. He could be found loading his truck with supplies, carrying water, being a course manager or on the lead vehicle watching out for the runners. Rest in Peace Dear Friend. December brings our Toys for Tots race. It was our 18th year that FARC gave back to the community with toys for the Marine Corp program. I am always made so proud of the running community at this race with the generosity of runners. The amount of giving is awesome! Thank you one and all. Special thanks goes out to race director Mike O'Flaherty and the FARC family of volunteers. A new volunteer, Bill Meldrum, got into the FARC spirit of giving by donating a new boys bicycle. There were a lot of FARC volunteers who fell in love with this bike and wanted to ride it home. Our Sunday Morning Manasquan Reservoir runners and walkers keep racking up the miles. This is the most beautiful place to train any time of the year. For yours truly this is my peaceful time to get in touch with God and nature. The miles just seem to go by so effortlessly there. New to the 1000 miles ranks are Avram & Marcia

Shapiro, Cindy Monica and Sue Hinkelbein. Come join us! Your miles will add up quickly as you have fun and get encouragement from the rest of the runners. A thank you goes out to Joe Saffer who is the Sunday Morning miles statistician. We had great club meetings and speakers this year. We started out at the March meeting with the traditional Dozy Do around the tables to stuff packets for the St Paddy’s race. It’s great fun and everyone has a good time. May came and club member Under Sheriff Ted Freeman gave a great talk and presentation on Identity Theft and how to prevent it. In October, we had Tom Hyland showing us the newest sport-ware and the newest items in shoe-ware. December brought our Holiday party where everyone brought a desert. Aw what a sweet Holiday! The club continued to remain committed to helping support our young runners as they make the transition from high school to college. Thusly, the 8th year of our Matthew John Stuper Memorial Scholarship fund distributed three awards of $1000 each. The highly deserving recipients were Erica Weitz, Kerry Calnan, and Sean Coyne. Our website, www.farcnj.com, kept everyone informed throughout the year. It was always loaded with race results, news on upcoming events, pictures and mounds of other interesting tidbits. Plus, the appearance and music was quite creative. Thank you so much Nathan and Jim Bergum for maintaining our site.

Special thanks to the FARC Board of Directors who supports and give so much to the club.

Michael O'Flaherty, John Weitz, Art Rosen, Jim Bergum, Bob & Linda Hyer, Marcia & Avram Shapiro, Tom Wendel, Dave Friedman, Walt Rutsky, Stan Dubroff, Joel Stern, Bob Roman, Mick Chudkowski, and Bud Fitch.

See you all on the roads this year. - Isabel Keeley
