FARC VALUES VOLUNTEERISM You can be as involved in your club (FARC) as you want!  E‐mail  the  webmaster  at  [email protected]  or  go  on  our website at www.farcnj.com and a friendly FARC volunteer will be put in touch with you shortly after they finish their run or whatever.   Please share your  feedback about your club when you see a smiling FARC volunteer at an event!          PAT    JOE         JIM        JANET       CATHY

Patrick Coyne Joe Francese JimJensen Janet Bergum Cathy Gaughan Vice President Vice President President Treasurer Secretary

Besides the executive board members above,  you’ve undoubtedly seen many other dedicated volunteers

around the area at FARC races and club-assisted events. Just a sampling of these are: Avram Shapiro (left) with 34 years of continuous service on the board from our founding year (1983) to now, three years as Treasurer and two as

Secretary. Marcia Shapiro (right) who served as President, Vice President, and was St. Paddy’s Day Race Director when the race experienced phenomenal growth. She has been recruiting and coordinating the volunteers for every FARC

race since 1990! Isabel Lewis (right) who is a long-time race director, former Treasurer, Bd. Pres. and is currently club membership chair. Jim Bergum (left) has spent many years as club Secretary & Vice

President (he remains as Webmaster (www.farcnj.com) and runner). Dave Friedman (right) spent many years as Club Vice President (Dave is

also race director of Jersey Shore Half Marathon), and he is a past President of USAT&F-NJ. By day, Tom Wendel (left) is a Marlboro businessman; but at night & weekend he is in

charge of FARC equipment, was a long time race director of St. Paddys Day Race, has designed numerous courses, and he conceived the Toys for Tots race over 25 years ago. Ron Salvio (right) has put together an internationally recognized race walk series over the past

several years, during which time he has produced many championship events in northern Ocean County. At FARC, we know Walt Rutsky (left) as not merely the guy who does the race course work at Winter and

Summer Series, Toys for Tots, and more, but as “Mr. October”, for his dedication to making FARC’s cross-country team participation happen each fall. Please meet and speak with these people and many more (who we’ll cover in another issue) at area races & FARC events!

A 'blast from the past’

24 years ago: Club officers at FARC’s 10thanniversary...

Bob Hyer Isabel Lewis Tom Wendel Jeff Decker

Freehold Area Running Club 1983-1993

The year is 1993 and FARC is celebrating its 10th anniversary as a club. The president was Jeff Decker, vice president was Bob Hyer, treasurer was Tom Wendel and newly installed Secretary was Isabel Stuper (now Lewis). It was the last week of the Summer Series and we celebrated with a BBQ on the deck of the Stuper home in Manalapan. Kathy Shortmeyer made the cake as she is a cake decorator extraordinaire.

We did not have a web site and we communicated with our members thru our newsletter. We met at someone’s house, usually Bob Hyer’s, to collate the newsletter. We hand wrote the addresses. Then we went big time and did labels, put on by peel and stick. Most of us got our race applications at races we ran. No website to download or sign up on line. We read Elliott Denman in the Press on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Picked out the races we wanted to run. We were so happy to see our name in the newsletter if Elliott put our names and times in the Asbury Park Press. We knew that we had made it in running or race walking. We talked races and PRs, Oh! That’s personal record for a race. We did races to improve ourselves also to meet our friends in the sport. We loved to talk running or walking and shoes. We did not expect a lot from the event, water in cup and big time if they had bananas and oranges because it was all about running and how we finished.

FARC has moved into the 21st Century with a web site, online registration, downloadable race application, chip sensor results, and email communication with our FLASH newsletter. We have come a long way in running these past 34 years. Some things don’t change as the best part is meeting friends and talking running and what was your time?

Winter       Spring      Summer       XC,     Also known  Already Gone!   Gone Too!    Train, Put on Calendar!   As Fall or Autumn  Complete results can be viewed on Shore AC’s WEB site: www.shoreac.org/cross-country-series/ Our ambitious goal for next year is to double or triple participation and win the series trophy, the GNOME (at right). The FARC’s mantra: NEW HOME for the GNOME in 2017! How many bumper stickers will we need!?

Ok, the traditional unofficial start of the summer racing season, the Spring Lake 5 has taken place. It was held on May 27th. Many of you have participated. For those of you who did and those that didn’t have a great summer of running. But let this be a reminder that the Shore AC XC series is only two & one half (2 1/2) months away. Take advantage of the summertime (& summer series) to train for the FARC XC team in the fall. Follow the club WEB site for details as they unfold.

RUNNING COMMUNITY LOSES A GEM

Sad News: Jim Robbins, 87, longtime friend of the local and Shore area running community passed away Friday, June 30th. He ran and raced well into his 80s, as long as he was able. He reported on running and racing, in the on-line Atlantic Herald, meticulously and voluminously, with an enthusiasm uniquie to Jim. His viewing will be on Saturday, July 8th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at Damiano Funeral Home, Franklin Ave., Long Branch. For More information, see our club website at www.farcnj.com.

Salvio, Broker/Associate for ERA Central Realty Group,

Inc. in Cream Ridge, NJ, Wins Delmar Grand Prix

Dover, DE – Representing the Freehold Area Running Club, Ron Salvio was announced as the overall Walking Championship winner for the 2016 Grand Prix Series. Hosted by Tri-Sports Events the Grand Prix was comprised of 39 5k road races held throughout Delaware and Western Maryland. Each 5k run has a separate 5k walk held simultaneously.

Although you may compete in as many of the races as you wish, only an athlete’s top 12 times are scored. Salvio’s best times for the series was 28:52 recorded in Tounsend Del. Outside of the Grand Prix, he did record a 27:24 at Rehobeth Beach.

FARC has started off 2017 with a bang at this years’ Grand Prix with Fred Linkhart, John Fredericks and Salvio owning the top 10 times recorded this year.

MEMBER’S RECENT RACE RESULTS RUNNING / MARATHONING….

Napa Valley Marathon Weitz gains her 1st marathon win in CA, 3/5/17

FARC member Erica Weitz of Orlando, Florida won her first marathon on Sunday when she captured the women’s title of the 39th annual Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon, a 26.2-mile race from Calistoga to Napa. Weitz’s time was 2 hours, 48 minutes, 48 seconds. It was her ninth marathon. “I had competition throughout the entire course.” Weitz, who took the lead at the Mile-12 marker, and other runners endured hard hail, rain and strong head winds over the last two miles of the race. “It was probably the roughest race I’ve ever had at the end,” she said. “I felt pretty awesome the first 15 miles, and then I felt good from 15 to 20, and then it started to get kind of hard, like 21. I tried to take it one mile at a time. With two miles to go, I heard the second woman was 400 meters behind me. I pushed with everything I had for the last two miles after 'conserving myself' in the beginning.” Corina Canitz of Brookfield, Wisconsin was the second overall women’s finisher and was 11th overall in a time of 2:49:28. The 5+ cases of wine to male and female winners was also an incentive. “I know I can do better by kicking a little earlier than some people,” said Weitz. “I was thinking about time at the beginning. I thought maybe I can get a (personal record). And then it was like, I just want to win. “It’s really exciting. I love breaking the tape.” It made me even happier that my parents were cheering me on at mile 3.5, 8, 11, 14, 18, 23, and the finish! My mom crying at the end almost made me cry but I didn't because I knew I worked hard to earn and deserve this day!

“I liked the rolling hills,” said Weitz. “I really like it, because it mixes it up and keeps it interesting. My training cycle was probably the best it’s ever been, but for a short amount of time. I think that by the end of this year I’ll be able to get back to under my PR. Even though the pace was slow, I just tried to keep it consistent. I think I had a good strategy. “I just need to consistently train and stay positive like always, no negative thoughts.” Weitz’s personal record (PR) coming into Napa was 2:47:58, attained at Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN. Weitz has run the Chicago Marathon and Boston Marathon. She has also been to Sacramento to the California International Marathon (CIM), where she ran 2:49:06 in 2015. She is a three-time Boston Marathon finisher, placing among the top 100 women each year, from 2012 to 2014. Her Boston PR is 2:56:45. She was the second overall women’s finisher in her debut, the New Jersey Marathon, in 2011 and the fourth overall women’s finisher in 2016 at the Disney Marathon. The 2017 edition of NVM was again selected by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) as its Western Regional Marathon Championship. She is planning to run the October 2017 Chicago Marathon, which is flat and fast. In college, at Division I University of Central Florida, she ran cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track. Her events included the 3K, 5K and 3K steeplechase. Weitz teaches gym and health, then coaches cross-country, soccer and track, at a suburban Orlando high school where she is building the running program.

Erica is congratulated by Elite race coordinator Mary Coordt, before her folks did so!
